Potential Draft Selections, Trades, and Future of Charlotte

As we all probably know, the soon to be Charlotte Hornets will make the 4th pick in this year's draft. With that said, I would like to present what I think will happen on June 27.

Cleveland - Nerlens Noel

Orlando - Trey Burke

Washington - Otto Porter

Charlotte - Ben Mclemore

This in my opinion would benefit the Hornets a lot obviously because of the explosiveness and immediate impact Mclemore would bring. He can shoot the three just as good or better than anyone in the draft, and he flies in transition. He had a 42" vertical leap at the combine and showed in his lone season at Kansas that he can finish strong at the rim. While at Kansas, his team ran several plays where Mclemore was given the chance to dunk an alley oop. He has everything we would want in a two guard.

Another Possible Situation:

Cleveland - Nerlens Noel

Orlando - Ben Mclemore

Washington - Otto Porter

Charlotte - Anthony Bennett

Anthony Bennett is a player that has an incredible offensive skill set. He can work in the post, step out for a mid range jumper, and even hit the three. He also plays the pick and roll very well and would work very well with Kemba Walker. I've heard that he needs to work on his defense but clearly, with his athleticism he will blossom into a solid defender.

Another guy that I would love to see Charlotte get is Victor Oladipo. He is the best wing defender in the draft and has no ceiling to his athleticism. His pairing with MKG on the wings would be one of the best duos in the league. Oladipo showed that he can be a dependable shooter as well. It's looking like Henderson won't be back for next year so filling the shooting guard position is a priority.

Charlotte should draft Mclemore or Bennett, whoever is there for the taking. If neither of the are available, Oladipo is the obvious choice. I don't think drafting a big is the right thing to do in this draft although a lot of people have said that Alex Len would be a good fit in Charlotte and could be the best player out of this draft.

The only trade I would like to see is a trade with the Timberwolves

Charlotte gets: Derrick Williams, Minnesota's 9th and 26th picks in the first round of this years draft

Minnesota gets: Charlotte's 4th pick

In this case Kentavious Caldwell-Pope is the ideal selection at the ninth pick. He can score from anywhere on the floor and has an explosive side to him. He has a huge range from behind the arc. Derrick Williams can score from anywhere on the floor as well and can defend a 4. He would be a great backup forward for the future.

With Wiggins, Parker, Randle, and many other franchise players in next years draft, Charlotte is in a position to make some easy decisions and become a team to fear in years to come.

As we all probably know, the soon to be Charlotte Hornets will make the 4th pick in this year's draft.
The Tier System and A FTW Mock Draft

I remember the 2011 draft very fondly, but one article stood out above all the others that has helped create the lenses in which I evaluate prospects at the top of the draft. It was this article by Chad Ford and I'd like to use that as a reference so we can quickly establish what "Tiers" are.

I talk with NBA scouts and executives to get a sense of:

A. Which teams like which players (mock draft).

B. What the consensus is among all 30 NBA teams about who the best players in the draft are (Top 100).

I use the word "consensus" lightly. Often, even GMs and scouts employed by the same team can't agree on rankings of players.

Obviously, I can't do that kind of thing, as I have no NBA connections and therefore no way to get any sort of consensus. One thing I can do however, is make up these tiers all by myself! So, let's get started shall we?

The First Tier: Franchise Pieces - I hesitate to put Noel here. I'm not going to get into any sort of length, as it's pretty irrelevant to Bobcat fans now, but I will relent and place him here for no reason other than convenience. I guess we can consider this tier graded on a curve, as this draft (appears) weak when compared to its predecessors.
Anyway, he's here because he's the clear head-honcho of the draft. Despite some naysayers (like Jay Bilas) who like Ben McLemore, the overwhelming consensus is Noel will be the No1 pick in the draft. So, he fits the bill.

The Second Tier: The Next Best - These are the guys who, for whatever reason, have some glaring weakness that keeps them from being percieved as a true "franchise piece" and are as thus relegated to this tier. My person ranking (in this tier):
2) Ben McLemore - There are enough people who hold the belief that McLemore has the highest upside of this bunch, so I don't see why he shouldn't be given 2nd billing to Noel. He has something all Tier 2 prospects have, an elite tool. That tool is shooting; shooting so good that I've seen comparisons as lofty as Ray Allen. He's got plenty to work on, but you have to love kids that have an elite tool.
3) Anthony Bennett - If you know anything about me on here, you know I'm a sucker for Bennett. He's got elite athleticism (the best of this PF crop), which ticks off that box. He's got SF speed with the power of a PF, making him the ideal offensive prospect, only matched by McLemore in this crew. However, his fatal flaw is his size, in which he is undersized (PG Micheal Carter Williams is close to him in height) and that, matched with subpar defensive effort during his freshman season at UNLV), that generates a lot of questions about his defense.
4) Victor Oladipo - A defensive tour-du-force. While not having the height to actually play SF, he has the outstanding defensive ability to matchup with anyone from 1 through 3 (and his strength isn't bad either; he could probably handle some 4s). His intangibles are so outstanding that it led to incredibly outlandish comparisons to our very own Micheal Jordan, but you don't get people talking about you without doing something right. That elite defensive tool lands him on this second tier, because his offense is nothing to write home about. He's almost the exact offensive player as Bobcat Gerald Henderson's senior year at Duke, which is to say he's an above-average slasher but below average everything else.
5) Cody Zeller - I'm strongly considering him as a Tier 3 prospect, but statements from resident commenter PoAshton made me reconsider my stance that Cody Zeller is not an elite athlete (you can get a good here in the comment section). Among C prospects, his eye-popping combine numbers show that he has elite athleticism for a C. Here's the rub though, his ranking on this Tier in contingent on him predominately playing Center at the next level. I see him more as a PF personally, but I don't like pidgeonholing players before seeing how they play.

The Third Tier: Significant Upside - These guys have a good shot of contributing at the next level, and have the potential to be even more, but for various reasons are just a longer shot of ever reaching that ceiling. Either that or their floor is great but their ceiling is limited. Maybe its because of the weakness of the top, but this draft seems to be chock full of Tier 3 guys. More than I can remember, comparative to the last two years at least. Anyway, for the sake of brevity, I'll simply list these guys: 6) Otto Porter 7) Trey Burke 8) Alex Len 9) Shabazz Mohammad 10) Rudy Gobert 11) Michael Carter Williams 12) CJ McCollum 13) Steven Adams 14) Dennis Schroder

There are 3 more Tiers (mid-late first, second round, undrafted), but those are unimportant to our purposes. Please, in the comment section, create your own Tiers! Where do you differ? Do you agree? I'd love to see what you guys came up with.

Moving on...
Here's a really quick mock of the lottery. I'll keep it devoid of any explanation, as it's merely my assumptions and beliefs based on my initial reactions. They are subject to change as new information arises. If this piece is well enough received, I'll gladly elaborate in a future post, and this would be as good a version as any. Please also leave me your thoughts on my mock draft, and if you're so inclined, you can make a mock draft instead of Tier.
1. Cleveland Cavaliers - C Nerlens Noel
2. Orlando Magic - SG Ben McLemore
3. Washington Wizards - PF Anthony Bennett
4. Charlotte Bobcats - SG Victor Oladipo
5. Phoenix Suns - SF Otto Porter
6. New Orleans Pelicans (lol) - PG Trey Burke
7. Sacramento Kings - PF/C Cody Zeller
8. Detroit Pistons - SF Shabazz Muhammad
9. Minnesota Timberwolves - C Alex Len
10. Portland TrailBlazers - SG C.J. McCollum
11. Philadelphia 76ers - C Rudy Gobert
12. Oklahoma City Thunder - PG Michael Carter Williams
13. Dallas Mavericks - C Steven Adams
14. Utah Jazz - C Mason Plumlee

I remember the 2011 draft very fondly, but one article stood out above all the others that has helped create the lenses in which I evaluate prospects at the top of the draft.

Im starting to like Bennett

We obviously need a four and five above all other positions and I think Bennett is the most NBA ready of those positions in the draft. Noel is only 206 pounds, wont play until 2014 and has little offensive skills. I think Bismack is pretty close to him right now, so I dont really want him. McLemore is smaller than thought and does have an offensive game but to me isnt better than Hendo right now and might or might not ever be better.

Who else is talked about in the top 2 or 3? People like Burke but to me unless he is going to be a dominant PG in the league, why take him when our best player is our PG? So that leaves Bennett to me. If we do get the top pick, trading back to 4 or 5 and getting another 1st would be perfect. Also somehow convinces Big Al to come here would be amazing but even if those things dont happen, I am throwing my name in the Bennett column.

Thoughts or opinions??

Better late than never. Of course this news is not unexpected. We all knew it was inevitable, despite the denial of some. But this IS the right move. This city loved their Hornets, but never really accepted the Bobcats. Now if MJ can put together a winning product, in combination with the beloved brand, this team could once again be a hot commodity.

Go Hornets!!!

Bobcats start process of changing name to Hornets (CBSSports): Now it's time for a magic trick

Will Brinson of CBSSports.com reports that a Bobcats-to-Hornets name change has begun.

Some time ago, after a particularly annoying conversation in the upper deck of the Cable Box with a couple of buzzed dudes who wanted a name change, I gave up trying to explain why a name change isn't a good idea, and why the downside is actually pretty big for those people who want to tap in to Hornets nostalgia.

[Okay, I'll put it out there: Charlotte rejected the Hornets already... People over about 30 years old (18 at the time of the departure), the ones who were buying tickets and such, abandoned the team en masse over a combination of the organization's demands for a new arena, George Shinn's sexual assault scandal, and Shinn's alleged cheapness with the team payroll -- the Hornets had their chance, and it's still a very real and different kind of pain for a lot of older folks (like my father-in-law, who worked for the Hornets) than it is for the kids who were 12 at the time and don't truly remember why the team left in the first place... People will fill the arena, watch on TV, et cetera when the team is good, like, you know, during the playoff run... And what happens when the New Hornets are a 25-win team next year? Are fans really going to keep coming once they have to face the reality that this team isn't the same one that had a historically successful expansion launch?]

Now, I accept that the name change is an inevitability. So how should the franchise actually carry it out?

I'm of the opinion that the ideal way is to do as Bomani Jones outlined: If you're gonna do it, go hard. Pretend that 2004-2014 never happened. Pretend that we're switching from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar and all those dates in between simply skipped into the ether, and "Hey! We've got a bunch of new players!" At the introductory press conference, bring Muggsy. Bring Dell. Do as the Cleveland Browns did and pretend that the team that left in 2002 didn't go to New Orleans.

Leave the Bobcats as one of sports history's curios. Because that's what the Hornets nostalgists want, and by changing the name, the whole point is to cater to that group as much as possible and bring as many of them into the fold as we can, because that's the whole point.

Ultimately, I think Bobcats fans like me will have to turn a magic trick. I happen to think changing the name is ill-advised because the $3-$10 million it will cost to do so would be better spent on improving on-court performance, which in turn would bring people to the team. But I also recognize that management wants to have a successful team in Charlotte, and if this is the path they want to take, my responsibility as a fan is to make the best of it, not to pout.

Thus, a magic trick: Even if I think people coming to support the New Hornets are doing it for inscrutable or ephemeral reasons, and even if I suspect that the vast majority of them will bail as soon as the team disappoints them, I will welcome them. Because it's also true that every Bobcats fan I've ever met shares the defining characteristic of longing for a larger fan base, a larger tribe, and even if it's a crappy way to go about it, it's still a shot at one, and we've got to embrace it. Because being a good Bobcats fan will mean becoming a good New Hornets fan.

Lottery and Coaching pool

I have been considering the effect the lottery is likely to have on the Cats coaching search. Seems like a big difference in what coaches would interested in the position depending on which scenario plays out. As an example...

Scenario 1- building around Kemba, MKG, BB, Henderson (?) and the #1 pick in the draft (Noel? McLemore?)

Scenario 2 - building around Kemba, MKG, BB, Henderson (?) and the #4 pick in the draft (Bennet? Oladipo? Zeller?)

I think the first scenario is going to be much more attractive to a coaching candidate than the second.More NBA level talent on the roster with likely 3-4 more high draft picks coming in the following two years.

Hopefully this will lead to a more successful coaching search this year and no new search next year.

Who would want to coach in Charlotte?

via cdn1.sbnation.com

I was really expecting someone with so little NBA coaching experience as well as such an inexperienced roster to be given more time to turn this team around. I guess the executives had other plans. Why hire Dunlap in the first place? (Besides the fact he was the only person willing to coach here)

I know his rotations were weird, he didn't get along with veterans well, and of course had a horrendous record, but what were we supposed to expect. This team just had the worst season in NBA history! Was he supposed to come in here and win 30, 40 games with Charlotte's roster after winning only seven the previous season? This firing is just frustrating because the young players are the ones who suffer from this and this constant revolving door of coaches stunts their growth and team chemistry.

I'm not saying I think Dunlap was the right guy, but I am more saying, What is this front office doing? Let Dunlap coach a few years, let him walk and then try to hire a better coach. The problem is that no one wants to coach in Charlotte. Brain Shaw said that he wanted to coach a team that had a chance, and Charlotte didn't have one, so he pulled his name from consideration. It would be hard to believe that Shaw or any coaching candidate with similar potential would want to take on this job now after not much has changed roster wise.

And frankly, if they hire Quin Snyder, I feel like that's taking a step back. Not criticizing Snyder's coaching ability, but I feel they could've hired him last year and instead they went with Dunlap. Hiring Snyder and having him this season is like two seasons with Dunlap.

I would like to see Charlotte make a hire that can be long term. The John Fox era with the Panthers was successful, to an extent, and it would be nice to see if the Bobcats could find a coach as consistent as Fox was for the Panthers. I personally like Alvin Gentry, and think his up-tempo style and play would greatly benefit our team. He was able to take an average roster with Nash to the verge of the playoffs. He was dealt a bad hand this year with poor contracts and suffered because of it.

It would bring some energy back to Charlotte if they could somehow make a splash hire. (And yes Gentry is a splash hire for Charlotte these days)

Who do you all think should coach or would be willing to coach the Bobcats?

via cdn1.sbnation.com

Dunlap will not return for second season.

Its common knowledge on this board that Dunlap was not a sure fire candidate for a second season. Many of us were growing weary of his rotations, defensive sets, and lack of adjustments throughout games all season long. Quite a few others had decided that since he was a rookie coach he should be owed a second season to prove his worth. While I was one that wanted him to go, I would not have been upset at his staying for a second season if it were to lead to a better coaching prospect at the end of next season. In what seems to be a sudden change of heart by the Bobcats organization though, Dunlap was relieved of his coaching duties and will not return for a second season, per the bobcats official site.

From this point on, I can only imagine who the team could possibly bring in to interview that wasn't already interviewed in the past. In some ways, it feels like this was the plan all along. Will Dunlap be retained as an assistant or go back to the college ranks? Time will tell, of course, but given the small progress we had made towards the end of the season and the player progressions, a move like this puzzles even me.

Eyeing a giant from the great white north...

Sup people? Every now and them I come in and gauge chatter from the Bobcat (Hornet) faithful in regards to my top team, the Minnesota Timberwolves.

I understand the interest you guys have in needing a big, both at PF and Center, and wonder what you guys would give up more a chance at one of the following.

Derrick Williams: Young buck of a player who, with the help of Love's injuries, has seen a great increase in his minutes. With that he has shown he can be a very reliable source of points from the PF position, as well as rebounds. He has the ability to shoot the three and is getting better at driving to the basket and drawing contact. His youth provides a great "potential" appeal to D-Will.

Nikola Pekovic: Now this Beast of a man is one I expect Minnesota to resign, but in this hypothetical scenario I go with the idea that he could be had with a S&T due to Pek playing himself into a price range on par with the top centers in the league, which by all accounts, he's earned.

Also, what would be your interest in one of our backup PGs, Ridnour or JJ Barea. With the potential of Shved to play both PG and SG we actually find ourselves in the position to allow us to move one of them.

So having tossed those names out there....what are your interests?

Old Japanese Bobcat's photos

I was going through some of my old albums and I had forgot that I snapped these photos. I was living in Osaka, Japan as part of a student exchange program. and found these in an nba magazine that was printed during our inaugural season in 04. I had to listen to all the games through nba audio pass since they did not have the stream sites that they have today. Ironically, my first televised bobcats game was the Rockets @ Bobcats while visiting my at the time Fiancee in Shanghai, China. I couldn't even watch the games from Greenville, NC because Cox cable couldn't carry the games. Anyhow, on to the photos! I will resize each picture and you can click for a larger version.

I'm also doing this in case these are indeed the last few days the Bobcats exist.

Note that this is the only photo that won't enlarge.....crappy cell phone cameras from 2004. Bonus though because Kelly Tripucka in Hornet's gear was featured.

Overall review of the team based on a points per player(metric they used, not actual PPG) per team. Compare with the Celtics.

Steve Smith. As much as I thought I followed the team, I had forgot he played for us.

Remember, there is more than one way to Bring Back Primoz

Another breakdown of the team up to that point.

Remember, there is more than one way to Bring Back Primoz

Another breakdown of the team up to that point.

Full Roster with height, weight, and years played. Cannot dispute these facts, fallen friend.

Charlotte Hornets Could Return This Week

Potential great news could be on the horizon for those of us advocating the return of Charlotte basketball to it's true roots. Any skepticism about a return to the Hornets brand was squashed last week when Michael Jordan ditched his orange and blue Air Jordans, just in time for the release of a new purple and teal Jordan brand apparel.

If that's not enough to convince you, he also scheduled a presentation for this Wednesday to announce the "Future of the Bobcats". What's so significant about that day? It's also the same day that New Orleans will play their final game as the Hornets, thus officially releasing the Hornets brand. And to add to the coincidences, this presentation is being immediately followed on Thursday with open house event, and the Cats final (and perhaps "farewell") game. Everything is aligned for a dramatic Goodbye Bobcats, Hello Hornets NBA week.

Speaking of farewells, the New Orleans Hornets made a goodbye video for Hugo, with video of the him initially in Charlotte, and with a very curious sound track...

"Home, let me go home. Home is wherever I'm with you. La la la la take me home. Daddy I'm coming home."

They're either sending a message about Hugo coming back to Charlotte, or have a very, very sick sense of humor.
