My Offseason Moves

This offseason is the most critical time in franchise history in my opinion. As a fan I would like to see encouraging moves to indicate a promising future. This organization has to create an environment that players can continue to get better as well find the players where effort will never be a question.

1. First move is not to retain Paul Silas as Head Coach. I just think it's time to move on because he is not the long term answer for this current team. We need a good young coach with NBA coaching experience like Nate McMillian or a Mark Jackson / Monty Williams type like Brian Shaw. I think Paul and his son would be valuable assistants, but not sure if they would want to move on.

2. Team has to decide what players will be here long term. Many would like to see Corey Maggette amnested, but I disagree. Yeah, Corey can't stay healthy, but he plays hard and has shown great character, leadership and basketball I.Q. Tyrus should be the one because he has not shown the skills or basketball intelligence to improve or worthy of his salary that will strap the team over the next three seasons. Trade D.J. for pick or player because he doesn't want to be here and can't see the team paying him and Kemba eventually.

3. This team can't score or defend. We need a go to scorer, six man, bench and shot blockers. I like Free agents Michael Beasley as the SF and Anthony Randolph as a versatile defender and improving player who I think is finally getting it. This team needs talent! The number one pick is not guanteed so we have to have a back up plan and that should be a long evaluation process. I'm not really sure about the rest of the draft class that fit or has star potential after Davis.

4. Do not resign DJ White because if Mullens plays the stretch 4, then 3mil on white is a waste and Biyombo future postion is PF because I don't see him holding up at center long term. I say resign Derrick Brown because I like the improvements on the court and I can see him being a key player of the bench at SF and PF when we go small. Without Diaw, Najera , Thomas, Higgins and White we should have 5 roster spots to fill.

Projected Roster

Head Coach - Nate McMillian or Brian Shaw

PG - Kemba Walker, FA, Draft Pick ( Big guard preferred), trade from DJ

SG - Henderson, Reggie Williams, Matt Caroll.

SF - Michael Beasley, Corey Magette, Derrick Brown.

PF- Anthony Davis, Anthony Randolph, Byron Mullens

C-Biyombo, Diop, FA or Draft pick., trade fro DJ.

The Olympics: Privilege or Paycheck?

Normally, I would never post on here. I have too much going on in other endeavors and following Cat Scratch Reader like a stock broker follows the market. I'm a casual fan of basketball but I don't like the Miami Heat, I really don't care for LeBron James and until recently I didn't mind Dwayne Wade. Anyway, I saw an article on ESPN.com regarding Wade's comments about how the NBA players should be should be compensated for playing in the Olympics. Let that sink in for a moment. A man who makes more in one year than most of us would probably make in a lifetime thinks that any player representing Team USA should be paid. I think the reason this bothers me is because I spent over a decade serving my country in the military. That being said, I have a great amount of patriotism flowing through my veins and in my humble opinion feel that an opportunity to represent this country in the Olympics would be an honor. Monetary compensation should be a non-factor.

What can bobcats get the most of in 2012 draft?

can we expect the team to just keep the top picks of each round? can we expect any moves to grab 2 early picks? if so what happens to be the most of what we can get out of this 2012 draft. offense is vital, but defense is too. and what of any playmakers?

most experts think its defense that you get out of PF anthony davis. while true, he also hides a little bit of scoring touch under that furry brow. as for other prospects like andre durmmond and thomas robinson, we can expect as much. while these 2 would help the bobcats, I think we are targeting davis to help our swiss cheese interior defense. more after the jump

Can Kemba+Hendo get us a top 5 pick? Would you want it?

Do you guys thank a package of Kemba, Gerald, Portland pick and future 1sts land us a top 5 pick this year? Would you be upset if Cho and MJ do it? Me personally would be ecstatic! So we would need to atleast acquire a late lottery pick to really intrigue a team picking in the top 5. Maybe Utah would give us the #14 for Henderson, Ford has them taking Lilard and they are extremely high on their young talent so I don't see them taking another rookie to ruin the development of Burks or Hayward and most of their wings are free agents.

Then we could buy a late 1st. I think the Thunder's is definitely up for sale, their 2013-2014 salary is 34 million w/o Westbrook's new salary in it and they would be stupid not to resign both. Harden and Ibaka's extension would likely put them over the tax so I could see them selling their picks to pay for luxury tax since they are in a really small market. So then after that we offer a team in the top 5 the #14,#29,Kemba,Portland 1st,next available 1st.

Utah wanted 3 1st and a high 2nd for the 3rd last year so I think 4 1st and a young pg with some kind of upside in a pg weak draft could get it done.

Bobcats vs. UK - By the Numbers

Living in Kentucky (and being a Louisville fan) I've had to listen to a fair amount of the "UK could beat a bad NBA team" chatter. I think this is ridiculous, and I've been vocal about that, especially since my favorite NBA team happens to be our worst-of-the-bunch squad. Living around a bunch of college basketball fans who don't follow the NBA, my eyeball arguments weren't very convincing, so I figured I'd dig up some stats to make my point. So if anyone else around here is tempted to believe the hype, here you go.

Below are statlines for UK’s starting lineup matched against statlines of Charlotte’s starting lineup from the Bobcats’ players’ last college seasons. The number in parentheses is the years of NBA experience the players have had since putting up those statlines. Again, these are college numbers for the Bobcats.

PG PPG RPG APG

D.J. Augustin (+4) 19.2 2.9 5.8

Marquis Teague 10.0 2.6 4.8

SG PPG RPG APG

Gerald Henderson (+3) 16.5 4.9 2.5

Doron Lamb 13.6 2.8 1.5

SF PPG RPG APG

Corey Maggette (+11) 10.6 3.9 1.5

Michael Kidd-Gilchrist 12.0 7.6 1.9

PF PPG RPG BPG

Tyrus Thomas (+7) 12.3 9.2 3.1

Terrence Jones 12.6 7.2 1.8

Since Biyombo didn’t play college ball, here are the stats for he and Davis when matched up against each other in last year’s Nike Hoops Summit.

C PTS REB BLK

Bismack Biyombo (+1) 12 11 10

Anthony Davis 16 10 2

From a numbers standpoint, I think Charlotte would be favored if you simply put our players in a time machine from their final college seasons and played the game today. The only real advantages I see for UK are a 19-year old MKG over a 19-year old Corey Maggette, and an advantage for Davis over Bismack (despite their similar statlines from the Hoops Summit, Davis has a more developed offensive game and is more consistent). However, now that all our players are seasoned NBA veterans, having developed physically and in technique from their college selves? It wouldn’t be close. And this is just the starting lineups – the disparity in the benches would be ridiculously higher - laughable even.

Bottom line - don't buy the annual talk about the best college team beating the NBA's worst. This year's UK squad is one of the NCAA's best in years, and the Bobcats one of the NBA's worst in recent years, and we'd still run them off the court.

The Backup Plan

Anthony Davis of Kentucky is a BEAST. This much we know. And by "we", I mean any person that has watched college basketball at all this year. At 6'10 and 220 lbs, Davis is a little thin at this point, but still has the "natural potential" to grow taller and add more weight to his frame. Even if he doesn't grow anymore, he's still big and athletic enough to be a game changer in the NBA. He is already stellar on defense and has a nice little offensive game to go with it (not great, but better than most big men). Either way, he's done enough to make himself stand head and shoulders above the rest of his draft class. The Bobcats, as all teams that are picking high in the lottery (Wizards, Hornets, Blazers (via Nets), and Raptors) are hoping to land the top pick and land Davis to begin building the franchise around. We're certainly in the best position to pick him up, based on us being the worst team in the league (which I don't expect to change over the duration of the season) and having the most ping pong balls, but as with everything else in life excluding taxes and death, nothing is promised.

The Enigma Known As Tyrus Thomas

Act_tyrus_thomas_medium

On February 18th, 2010, the Charlotte Bobcats agreed to package Ronald "Flip" Murray, Acie Law, and a future protected first round pick to the Chicago Bulls in exchange for Tyrus Thomas, a former number four overall pick who had never managed to average more than 10.8 ppg and 6.5 rebounds in his 3 1/2 years in the windy city, but still displayed a great deal of potential in short spurts.

The Bobcat's need for another body in the middle for the team's first ever playoff run at the time was well documented. I myself even put together a list of potential power forwards I would have liked to see the team go after four days earlier that week which included the rumored trade of Tyrus that actually happened. Everyone knows what happened next.........

How the Bobcats improved at the Deadline.

The trade deadline came and went, and as Bobcats fans we saw our team involved in discussions but ultimately standing pat and not getting anything done, preferring to consolidate cap space for the future and looking to get better in the coming drafts.

In Portland things were a little different as management decide to hit the reset button and conduct a good old fashioned fire sale.

Hornets willing to give either 1 of 2 lottery picks to dump Emeka!!!

Source: http://www.iamagm.com/news/2012/03/11/hornets.willing.trade.first.round.pick.order.get.rid.emeka.okafor

We have to do this. It would give us a 40.6% or 44%chance at #1.
