Bobcats Agree on Deal to Sign Al Jefferson

Who else is excited about this? Because I am! The Charlotte Bobcats made their first big free agency move since the team originated in 2003. Al Jefferson will make $41 million over the span of three years, the third year being a player option. Last year, Charlotte started four different centers in Biyombo, Haywood, Diop, and Mullens. If everything works out as planned, Charlotte should start one center next year. Jefferson was probably the third best center in free agency this summer, behind Dwight Howard and Andrew Bynum. Howard would never sign in Charlotte, and Bynum is turning out to be a hot mess.

Al Jefferson will play a star and veteran role on an otherwise young and rebuilding franchise. Jefferson's 12-17 foot jump shot is way underrated. That jump shot stretches the defense and opens driving lanes and offensive chances for other teammates. Also, he probably couldn't have landed a better associate coach. He will be able to learn and improve his game under NBA great Patrick Ewing. His defense will also be able to improve under Ewing, and defensive minded head coach Steve Clifford. Charlotte has been looking for this elite big man, since their entrance to the NBA.

Jefferson is a consistent back to the basket scorer with shooting range that stretches out to about 17 feet. Jefferson is also a good passer out of the post, which will benefit offensively challenged players such as Bismack Biyombo. The Bobcats coaching staff should be extremely excited about this deal. It will make matters so much easier for the coaches to have a player you can throw down low to, and get two points a lot of the time.

This could be the first step in a possibly long rebuilding process. But something that I know is this is certainly a step in the right direction.
