Growing Anger Over Cory Higgins

After reading this terrific piece by Scott Schroeder, I started thinking about Cory Higgins. Early in the season, I didn't really care. I mean, cool, there's some nepotism going on, but it's not that big a deal. I also didn't care about Cory Higgins at all until just a little while ago. However, once it was brought to my attention he was on a unguaranteed contract, I started actually using my brain. What exactly does Cory Higgins bring to our team? As I thought about all I've seen from him, I decided he brings absolutely nothing to our team. He has nearly no upside and his current game isn't exactly racks on racks on racks. So now the nepotism gets a little grating. On a team so devoid of talent, why should he be given a chance over guys like Manny Harris or Ben Uzoh? I'm under no impression these guys are ever going to be very good NBA players. I just don't see it. But I am under the impression I'd be far more inclined to give them a chance to be good NBA players than Cory Higgins, because I don't see him ever being part of our future. Right now, my Higgins anger is at a 6, mainly because in the end it's probably never going to matter and I have more important things to be worried about. However, c'mon FO, please cut Cory Higgins before his contract becomes guaranteed make it a revolving door for 10 day contracts. If you do this, our collective health as a fan base will be much better.

If for some reason the FO doesn't, I don't want to hear about it. I swear to God if someone feels the need to bring it up every time we talk about our FO I will probably get way angrier than I have any right to get. Sure, it's pretty obvious neptotism, but in the grand scheme of things, Cory Higgins not getting cut isn't going to make or break this franchise.

I really need a 4th response

“The world is full of apathy and I don’t care.”

It’s one spot. Does it make a difference this year? Absolutely not. Could we possibly get better by cutting him and signing other players? Maybe. We certainly can’t get any worse unless they sign me for a 10-day contract. If we do get better, would it be enough to make any difference? Heck no.

Hence why I’m apathetic.

by Tim Rudisill on Feb 6, 2012 11:05 AM EST reply actions

I feel you on that completely.

Which is why my anger will fade even if he isn’t cut. It probably wouldn’t make much of a difference in the long run. But honestly, we need to take every advantage we can use to make us better, and Cory Higgins is < the D-League guards mentioned in the article I linked to.

If you disagree with my opinion, I will take it personal and hate you forever.

Do we have room to blow opportunities to accumulate talent?

this is probably the reason he's on the team

the season is lost, no one player is going to save it, especially a d-leaguer or undrafted rookie, why not give the spot to a family member and let him earn some money before he takes the long path to assistant coaching somewhere

by adamcawa on Feb 6, 2012 12:20 PM EST up reply actions

absolutely

have no interest in him being on this team.

I do think there are 5-10 players in the D-League right now that could play better and more consistently than Higgins

In a year where we’re not even close to competing on most nights, let alone contending, I think it makes sense to use the 10-day contract round-robin to find a quality bench guy. I mean why not?

by Panthers FTW on Feb 6, 2012 12:26 PM EST up reply actions

I fully agree

not only that, but the D-league is an incredibly under utilized facet of the NBA. I know they’re completely different, but the NHL/AHL system is spectacular and does a wonderful job rotating players up which gives a lot of guys opportunities to play at a higher level that wouldn’t normally. Allowing teams to find a diamond in the rough every now and then. While I think it’s still a busted system, and needs to be ratified to better fit the needs of the teams, it’s still something a team like the Bobcats isn’t going to get any worse by trying.

in fairness to higgins

from what i’ve seen, he knows how to run an offense better than kemba

of course, that’s not much of an accomplishment at this point

disagree all you want

but show me one highlight of kemba actually running our offense

by adamcawa on Feb 6, 2012 6:52 PM EST up reply actions

the offense

especially the half court offense, grinds to almost an utter halt, he doesn’t set his teammates up well, and paul silas doesn’t even want to run half court… kemba is clearly better at running the floor, yet can’t get the team to do so when he’s on the floor, although i’ll give him the benefit of the doubt there, since not even paul silas can get them to run

at first, i thought mullens was just terrible on the pick and roll, but he hasn’t really shown great pick and roll passing skills regardless of the pick man

and he takes bad shots when we can least afford them

on more than one occasion he’s overdriven the lane and forced his teammates to run baseline to prevent a turnover and, outside of one game, hasn’t been particularly adept at finding the three point shooter – although it’s not like anyone is gonna make it anyway, right now

by adamcawa on Feb 6, 2012 9:51 PM EST up reply actions   1 recs

Okay

It’s just that I see people blaming Kemba for his teammates not moving when he’s trying to run the offense as if he’s supposed to use some sort of mind control to move players around. I have seen him miss open teammates, and I hope he goes back and studies his game and makes note of those. But I have also seen him get teammates open looks only to have them miss. He may never be a top tier distributor, but I think he can become respectable in that facet of the game.

by JDeLong42 on Feb 6, 2012 10:55 PM EST up reply actions

indeed

for the sake of the franchise i hope he does, too

by adamcawa on Feb 6, 2012 11:48 PM EST up reply actions

After watching every game this season, it is clear that Kemba’s ability to dish the ball on the drive has improved drastically. The only reason Augustin has higher assist number is due to the team’s ability to hit jumper early in the season. (Mullens, White, Hendo.) It’s hard to get assists if your team can’t shoot.

Its best if we let him go

there is no explainable reason to keep him around. Uzoh was D-league player of the month? Get him back. 10 day contracts should be all we do from here on out. We need to be sure that at the deadline we have room just in case something substantial comes along. If we do keep Higgins, then I will really question the decision making of our front office…

Lebron? Its so many players I’d give our pick away for. Anthony Davis is a beast in college. But its a few players that I’d just say screw it and throw the pick at…Monta Ellis is one. Blake Griffin is another. Bargnani (sp?). Lamarcus. Paul George. Roy Hibbert.

by focuslja on Feb 8, 2012 5:57 PM EST up reply actions

not OUR first round pick, no

for a late first round pick, absolutely

but he’s not worth a 1-5 pick

i like monta ellis, he can score, and when he protects the ball he’s one of the best guards in the league – he also attacks the lanes on defense

just you hope with a top 5 pick you’re getting a player that will turn a franchise around and i don’t see that in monta ellis

plus you can’t understand a word the guy says

by adamcawa on Feb 9, 2012 12:39 PM EST up reply actions

not anyone in this draft

by focuslja on Feb 13, 2012 3:43 PM EST up reply actions

Thomas Robinson

was Dick Vitale’s player of the year until he saw Anthony Davis in person against Vanderbilt. He is sky-rocketing up draft boards since no one really saw him coming. We shouldn’t be taking him over Davis but I wouldn’t bat an eye if we took him over Drummond or Sullinger or Barnes or even MKG.

Really, I’m not sure why he hasn’t been mentioned by us more often when we mention guys like Drummond and Sullinger, because the guy’s a baller. I think my excuse is that I have tunnel vision on Anthony Davis so everyone else is kind of secondary.

And his first choice is to go back to Denver, whom he believes will offer him a long-term deal. It may be the sort of situation like when the Cavs used us to get Varejao signed long-term, and he may not have any shot at ending up anywhere else.

It actually goes back further than that:

1/11/12:

On principle alone, we should be furious that the team has again used relationships, rather than ability, as the trigger for a personnel move. As bad as this team is, there is no reason whatsoever that roster spot should not be being used on a player who is young, holds potential for the future, and has the enough CURRENT ability to actually get in the games.

No, I strongly doubt that.

Especially since we’ll have DJ on the trading block. If Higgins was really worried about getting DJ a guaranteed contract, the easiest way to do it is to trade DJ and make Higgins Jr. indispensable that way.
