The Bobcats Fall To The Phoenix Suns, 95-89.

Despite an impressive team performance in the first half, the Bobcats lost a close outing to the Suns on Saturday night, victimized by poor offensive movement and fading defense during the game's final minutes. More thoughts on a generally encouraging game after the break.

Star-divide

I came into this game genuinely enthused about watching the Bobcats, a rarity in recent weeks. The reason for my excitement was the Bobcats' new starting lineup, including Bismack Biyombo and Reggie Williams, who didn't disappoint.

Against the almost equally lowly Suns, the Bobcats did the seemingly impossible, passing well and defending well for the first half of the game. Reggie Williams looked like his 2010 self and scored with ease. Kemba Walker had one of his best passing halves, and took few bad shots. Bismack Biyombo and Tyrus Thomas rebounded extremely well. Boris Diaw even played admirably, making threes and helping to initiate the offense. The Bobcats strong start faded greatly in the second half, namely in the fourth quarter, as the team struggled to score and defend as a unit. Despite an energized comeback attempt, the team was unable to close the gap.

The Bobcats aren't a good team, so any close game is a welcome surprise. Losing consistently may help the team's long-term prospects, in regards to a high-loterry pick, but it's important that the team show positive flashes and play close to teams when possible to instill optimism into the fan base and team personnel. This was such a game, and the mostly excellent play of the Bobcats' young, hopeful future cogs was as encouraging as anything that's happened to this franchise during the team's 11-game losing streak. It wasn't a perfect game - the Bobcats allowed far too many open corner three-point looks, along with other minor failings - but it was an important one, both for morale and long-term outlook.

The Bobcats gave this game away in the fourth quarter, but I'm not disappointed. They simply don't have the personnel to close out games resoundingly. This was actually a fun, close game, and a largely revitalizing one.

Player Grades

Kemba Walker: I was impressed with Walker's passing and shot selection in the first half. He's often asked to do much offensively for this team, so it was nice to see him find an open Reggie Williams with frequency. He was forced to throw up bad shots late in the game, as the Bobcats' offense stalled, but he continued to keep from turning the ball over. More assists in the second half would have been nice, but 22 points on 16 shots was a welcome addition to the offense. Grade: B+

Reggie Williams: Williams carried the offense for much of the night, and provided a nice all-around line (22 points, seven rebounds, and six assists). It was nice to see Williams find his offensive rhythm after struggling in his first two games back. Grade: A-

Tyrus Thomas: Thomas couldn't make a shot tonight (3-14 FG), but rebounded quite well (13 rebounds). Grade: C

Boris Diaw: Other than his five turnovers and relatively stagnant play for portions of the fourth quarter, Diaw played acceptably. Grade: C+

Bismack Biyombo: Biyombo played brilliantly in his first start. I've been waiting for Biyombo to play significant, important minutes, and he capitalized on the chance. He affected shots in the interior, rebounded very well, and turned in a strong offensive performance that included both a hook shot and two "and-1" layups. 11 points (5-6 FG), 12 rebounds, and two blocks is the best performance the Bobcats have gotten from their starting center in what feels like a long time. Grade: A

Derrick Brown: Brown provided a scoring punch during his 22 minutes off the bench (nine points, 3-6 FG). He also had an impressive dunk, so that was cool. Grade: B

Matt Carroll: Hey, three rebounds in nine minutes! Grade: C+

Byron Mullens: Mullens continue to struggle with his mid-range jumper, which he is reliant on for offensive success. Grade: C

D.J. White: White played quite well to start the season, so this kind of performance is somewhat disappointing. But it's difficult to find playing time when you pick up four fouls in ten minutes. Grade: C-

Cory Higgins: Hey, three rebounds in seven minutes! Grade: C+

hey, i’ll take it. great stats from Kemba, Reggie, and Biyombo. nice not to get pounded. BTW I was in Charlotte for Tool tonight, epic show!

Williams was great.

Walker, not so much. He again led the team in shots while only picking up four assists.

Biyombo played as a #7 pick should. An 11-12 in 36 night for a guy drafted that high should be a regular occurrence, not a blue moon-esque rarity. And between Gortat and Lopez, it’s not like he exactly shut down the opposition’s post game.

Finally, with a lineup that was supposed to be defense-first, it’s strange that the Bobbies were only able to muster seven takeaways against a team averaging 15 a game. Hell, we didn’t even hold them below their scoring average. They’re only at 92.4 a game this year.

I know people were saying this was supposed to be our "defensive" unit...

But nothing about Kemba, Diaw, or Williams screams “excellent defense.” That basically leaves Tyrus Thomas and Bismack’s long arms.

God I miss Henderson and D.J.

by Aisander D on Feb 5, 2012 1:23 AM EST up reply actions

I miss them both as well...

but honestly, I don’t remember Hendo ever having the kind of line that Reggie had tonight (with ZERO turnovers, no less). Once Hendo does return, though, they could provide a very dynamic offensive/defensive duo at the 2 and 3…what to do with Maggette, though? Hmmm….

(Of course, all this speculation is making the rather baseless assumption that Williams can produce like this night in and night out. We’ll see.)

Walker is fine and all, but I can’t WAIT ‘til DJ gets back. Not to put anything at all on Kemba, but these 20+ blowouts (Thank God we didn’t have to endure another tonight; talk about great expectations!) didn’t start until DJ went down.

DJ/Kemba
Henderson
Williams
Tyrus
Biyombo

That's what I'm thinking, too.

Maggette didn’t do in several games anything close to what Reggie did last night. I pray that Silas doesn’t give Williams the “DJ White/Thomas treatment” when Corey is cleared to play. If Reggie continues to play this well, he simply MUST start.

Henderson has had plenty of all-around games.

26-6-3 on 17 shots, 21-4-4 on 19 shots this year, and more similar games last year. 20-3-8 with just two TOs on 15 shots, 20-6-6 with no turnovers on 17 shots. He’s plenty capable of rebounding and distributing, and he also defends, unlike Williams.

Love some Hendo but he definitely can’t do offense like Reggie did last night. Hendo just isn’t as comfortable out there on offense. Seems like a lot more of Hendos points are painfully difficult to get whether its his grimacing drives, coming off all the screens and curls or his difficult fadeaways. I love what he brings especially on D but Reggie plays like one of those guys who can just go off for 35 one night and you wouldn’t be surprised. You never see something like that in Hendo at all

Good to see Biyombo on a starting line up

Biyombo played great tonight although I want to see him develop a jump shoot on the 15ft line because he is always open on that free throw line. Williams is really great.

I think that is already our best starting line up and I agree with coach Silas with that line up.

I don't care if he airballs it.

Optimistic

Our team is terrible but it is good to see some bright spots. I am satisfied with the selection of Biyombo because I believe he does of potential. He is good teammate and he loves the game. Reggie Williams is a good pickup with his ability to score. I am hoping we can add either Anthony Davis or Andre Drummond to the mix. A few good good free agent signings and we can be competitive. I like Kemba Walker but not at the expense of losing Augustin because I just don’t feel Walker can run the team like Augustin but he makes a good backup to Augustin, he is just not DJ’s successor.

by jayo28262 on Feb 5, 2012 2:42 AM EST via mobile reply actions

Biyombo's Potential

During the off season Biyombo needs to get with Hakeem Olajuwon or Dwight Howard and work with them to get better because he has loads of potential and just needs to work with a big man coach. Maybe even work with Kareem Abdul Jabar because he did wonders with Bynum.

by jayo28262 on Feb 5, 2012 2:47 AM EST via mobile reply actions

We need Oakley back! But seriously I like what you’re saying. How about Biyombo or whomever makes that call to Alonzo Mourning. Size wise I think he could be a better teacher for Biyombo than anyone.

Hold on you guys.

I was impressed by Biyombo last night. That statline I can deal with. But before we go after Alonzo and Kareem lets get him down on the basics first. Catching, ballhandling, footwork, timing on the glass and minutes on the floor. THEN maybe during next season or next summer we get him a Zo, I dont think he needs an Hakeem.

Udoh isn’t really that tall. He’s already an excellent team defender, he just lacks upside. I’ve grown to like him quite a bit because he is probably the only good defender on our team, but he’s already going to be 25 this year. He’s basically a finished product. On draft day, I wanted Monroe or Paul George.

Thanks dubzfan. Three things....

1. Not starting Biyombo and choosing to let him continue sitting to start the fourth is the reason Lopez got going.

2. Diaw’s extra passing and nonchalant defense, Thomas’ fall away air ball jumpers, and Mullens inability to roll properly and play post defense are killing this team.

3. The guards played excellent. This is what they needed, someone who could step in for Henderson. Only thing left is to get this terrible frontcourt to play post defense, rebound, and score down low.

Big Man Coaches

OK, why would we need Alonzo Mourning over Jabar or Olajuwon? We don’t know if he can coach just because Mourning was a good big man that he can coach a big man, however Jabbar and Olajuwon have shown they can do it. I mentioned Dwight Howard but I was just saying that to be facetious. I guess Biyombo can use any good big man coach that had an offense. I still think Biyombo has not fully filled out his body yet and will grow and needs more coordination. Even a little more coaching can be good for him. I wish he gets more aggressive and post up on the block.

by jayo28262 on Feb 5, 2012 11:12 AM EST via mobile reply actions

Dwight

got with Olajuwon well after he became an allstar. So he could add more to his arsenal. Although with that size and athleticism, you dont really need it. But to be honest, it hasnt helped Dwight much. As he still doesnt do many moves. As stated above, BB just needs to work on the basics before we start talking about moves and patterns. Catch, positioning, timing, ballhandling, decision making

PAIN IMPROVED LAST NIGHT !

The two babies played well. Williams was quite impressive. Tyrus is trying hard with good effort and I applaud him for that. Hey Mullens WTF was that ? Sure would have been great if Oakley was here to coach our “bigs” :-(

The rookies were awesome!

Honestly can’t understand how people could even fathom criticizing Kemba after that game. Idiots love to point out low assists but don’t fairly in turn point out how the few turnovers he gets as well. Its obvious to anyone who actually knows bball here (aka not Procton) Silas runs the half court thru our bigs with the UCLA high post offense thus the PG isn’t going to have crazy assist numbers like Nash or Rubio most nights unless the defense is ballin and we are in transition a lot. As long as we are in this half court system don’t expect huge assist games very often. The fact that he’s getting a decent amount and limiting turnovers is fantastic

by CatNation on Feb 5, 2012 12:03 PM EST reply actions

So for those of us who don't "actually know bball..."

How is it that Augustin managed double-digit assists on three occasions and seven-plus six more times?

pretty easy to see. DJ is a better passer than Kemba first and foremost, being a 4 year veteran that is not a surprise. Also DJ got to play with historically insane catch-and-shoot Mully and White, and healthy pre-“MJ tape” Hendo who lived on only catch and shoot. Injuries, cooldowns, emergence of Diop, Tyrus, and Bismack with bigger roles and it’s not a surprise.

Hell, DJ is only averaging 6.6 assists per game himself even with all those factors. Realistically looking at those factors that number would probably have dropped somewhat if all the other factors were held constant

by CatNation on Feb 5, 2012 1:45 PM EST up reply actions

6.6 assists a game seems pretty impressive compared to 3.6.

If White, Thomas, or Mullens could hit WIDE OPEN jumpers Kemba would have had 8 or 9 assists.

At the beginning of the season Byron Mullens was shooting like 65% from 15-23 feet which was on pace for the greatest mid range shooting season of all time by far. I don’t know what he’s at now, but its a LOT less than that. I think we all remember how literally automatic he was the first ~10 games of the season. White wasn’t far behind

I'm tired of people complaining about Silas...

No one would be winning with this team and I think Silas and Silas are both doing a good job of trying to bring along and cultivate talent.

you’ll find a lot less complaining when we lose by single digits instead of 45. The thing is, our talent is the same every night, its the strategy that changes (or isnt changed when it needs to be)

by CatNation on Feb 5, 2012 12:55 PM EST up reply actions

No, that's not the only factor.

The talent level may not change, but there are certainly nights when they execute better.

We don't always have to agree about the cussing rules (which a lot of us don't)...

But this is his blog and he can run it as he sees fit. I respect Ben for all the work he does and know what kind of work it takes to piece together a steady source of information and get it out there on a regular day-to-day basis. If you don’t like the way he runs it, that’s for you to opine about, but Ben can do what he wants. We’ve had this issue crop up several times on the Wake blog that I write for and it just is what it is.

All I ask for is some good-natured discussion and interaction between all of us in the community. When people resort to profanity to get a rise out of people, that’s when it goes overboard. I don’t like babysitting people in the comments like this, but when y’all can’t play nice like this, I have little other choice. Maybe one day I can get back to being ok with profanity, but as it is now, that’s just not the case.

I'm with you, Pitbull. At least we know that Kemba/Williams can be highly effective.

Williams is going to be awesome if he comes back to form. This guy is capable of 17 point drops in a 4th quarter! He has developed one of the most efficient 3pt shots in the NBA (actually, the rust showed there, this game, but still shot 8-14). He is also underrated on defense. I remember him racing the length of the court and coming up with double blocks at GSW. At any rate, we will see how close to his old self he will get this season after that surgery. This outing was very encouraging.

by dinohealth on Feb 6, 2012 10:31 AM EST up reply actions

when our team is healthy

the lineup of

DJ/Kemba
Hendo/Williams
Maggette/Brown
Diaw/White
Biz/Mullens

Will actually be pretty decent, I think. I mean, more than 3 wins decent, anyway. A mix of good offense and defense from your starters and scoring punch from the bench. That lineup is definately not the worst lineup in the league.

by adamcawa on Feb 6, 2012 1:59 PM EST reply actions

if MJ doesn't make a huge splash by the trade deadline

and get us some short term star

then at least this team won’t get destroyed as we work our way to the draft and the future

by adamcawa on Feb 6, 2012 2:00 PM EST up reply actions

i didn't get to watch the game

so just by glancing at the box score i wonder a few things

how our bench was so terrible

how kemba only had 4 assists when three starters shot incredibly efficiently… maybe he passed it to tyrus everytime

how did reggie williams get a -7 when his sub only played 9 minutes? also, i’m HAPPY about the 2-8 three point shooting because the only way he’s gonna find his shot coming off injury is by shooting it up… we need him to be able to hit threes consistently
