Bobcats Lose Against 76ers, Win Moral Victory!
Man, it's been a while since the Bobcats have even had a moral victory. Sure, they still lost to Philly 98-89, but they were extremely competitive and showed the grit that you hope to see from them and they kept the deficit within single digits for much of the night.
The game started as Bobcats fans could fear. Jrue Holiday was taking advantage of his height against Kemba Walker, getting to wherever he wanted and scoring at will. He had 11 points on perfect 5-for-5 shooting in the first quarter. The Bobcats defense was being stretched to its limits and permitted the Sixers to make half of their attempts in the first quarter while the Bobcats offense struggled to hit 33 percent of their own shots. It seemed the game would head to a similar conclusion as the previous 14 games.
The deficit swelled despite the Bobcats' best efforts, peaking at a 15-point Philadelphia lead. But impressively, Kemba Walker limited his own shots and passed quite well, including one amazing laser dish to Bismack Biyombo on a fast break through traffic. He showed good awareness of where his teammates were and didn't force much himself, only taking five shots in the first half and dropping five dimes. Thaddeus Young whooped the Bobcats during this time, especially Tyrus Thomas. But the Bobcats cut the deficit to 10 by halftime on the strong play of Walker and Byron Mullens, who made some nice cuts to score in the paint.
The second half showed a complete departure from the methodology of the first half. The 76ers seemed to get complacent and eased their feet from the gas pedal while the Bobcats also turned up their play. Holiday no longer exploited his advantages over Walker and Kemba stayed in front of him much better. Corey Maggette came alive and reminded everyone what he can do when healthy, scoring efficiently in the midrange and finishing very well at the rim, even through contact. I can't remember anyone getting so many and-1 opportunities. The Bobcats forced their way back into the game, cutting what was once a 15-point deficit to two points.
But the Sixers would wake up and shut it down with Lou Williams and Young despite the Bobcats' best efforts. Whereas the first half was Kemba The Facilitator, the second half was clearly Kemba The Scorer's time. He got to the line well for much of the night, but really turned it on in the fourth quarter, in which he scored 14 points on seven shots. He singlehandedly kept the Bobcats with the 76ers late, hitting key three-pointers and some a couple amazing off-balance shots, that I can probably describe as 'lucky.' Meanwhile, Lou Williams closed out the game for Philly, creating off the dribble with his quickness and hitting from deep with his quick release. Young continued to bully the Bobcats in the post for looks deep in the paint or getting to the free throw line. The Bobcats offense and defense could no longer match the Sixers and they ultimately fell by nine, 98-89.
But at least it was encouraging. Kemba Walker displayed some great looks as a passer and as a scorer. Biyombo rebounded pretty well and scored off a couple offensive rebounds.
Frankly, the most encouraging part of this game was the energy and effort we saw. Maggette definitely adds a grit and toughness the team needs at the small forward, which we saw last night as he torched Philly at times in the paint.
Other odds and ends:
Byron Mullens took an efficient scoring performance in the first half and got a little too confident in his own shot in the second. After scoring 11 points on seven shots in the first, he turned in a zero-for-six shooting half with his only points in the second half coming on a pair of free throws.
Cory Higgins had a fun stint, coming in for a minute and a half in the first quarter, recording two fouls and sitting back down. Then he returned early in the second quarter, quickly notching another foul in his 2:41 on the court, exiting once more. Hooray!
This foul trouble forced the Bobcats to play a quirky lineup with no point guard as the half came to a close. The lineup was Reggie Williams - Corey Maggette - Derrick Brown - Boris Diaw - Bismack Biyombo. It had mixed results as Diaw scored a basket on an offensive rebound and Lou Williams and Reggie Williams exchanged fouls with each other.
Tyrus Thomas played just awful. Thaddeus Young pushed him around like a child in the paint, clearly the stronger man. Tyrus got faked out by Young's post moves into jumping early or fouling. Thomas finished with zero points (0-3 FG), zero rebounds, and three fouls.
Diaw's scoring certainly wasn't what you want from your veteran post presence, but he did pass pretty well, recording 10 assists. Yay Boris Diaw's one good game for two weeks!
Derrick Brown didn't score as well as he had been recently, but he didn't take many shots and he rebounded well.
Matt Carroll scored two three-pointers, raising his 3P% on the season by seven percentage points to 20.8 percent. LOL.

MATT CARROLL FOR MVP
if he weren’t on the bobcats i wonder if he’d even start in the d league
Boone Logan is a good boy. So is David Robertson. Team A.J.
A quick word on Higgins
Awful. I don’t want this to get off topic into a DJ/Kemba war but I think the biggest issue we’ve had since DJ went down is that we’re forced to spell Kemba with Higgins. When Higgins is on the floor, we can’t score. Period. No chance. At least Silas finally went to a lineup with Williams bringing it up. Heck, I was begging for them to let Diaw bring it up instead of Higgins.
Okay, rant over. Anyway, I’m guessing we’ll be playing a lot better soon when we can go to a DJ/Kemba rotation at the PG. Especially, as Ben noted, that Kemba is starting to perform adequately as a PG.

i'm pretty sure every one of us
agrees that anyone in the d-league is better than higgins
doesn't matter who the player is
they’re better than higgins
it’s not like we can get ahearn now unless someone gets injured for the season
Until DJ gets back
Point forward is the way to go with Williams and/or Diaw. Higgins shouldn’t see the court even with the injury problems this team has.
Higgins shouldn't be in the NBA
let alone the rotation. Larry Hughes, Steven Graham, and Dominic McGuire caught a lot of hell around these parts, but they ALL brought more to the table than Rod’s son.

Except being Rod’s son is exactly all he needs to keep his spot in perpetuity.

+1
Higgins comes in and we can score and people attack him on defense b/c he just can’t defend either.
I don’t about about any of the names that have been thrown out there that are in the d-league but surely that has to be someone that is better than him. Just sucks the guys contract is guaranteed now the rest of the season.
Is his contract guaranteed yet?
If you disagree with my opinion, I will take it personally.

i was happy with this game up until the very end
the bobcats seemed to lose their heart except kemba walker
speaking of kemba walker, even though he didn’t shoot particularly efficiently for three quarters, he played within himself and within the offense and this, to me, was by far his best game as a Charlotte Bobcat
he made some mistakes, to be sure, but he negated all of that by nearly single handedly winning the game for us – unfortunately philly answered each of his threes with a three of their own
but kemba did a fine job of not forcing things and letting the offense work its way to him, and when he did force things with teh shot clock expiring, he made some wicked shots – i don’t expect those to go in even a third of the time, but it wasn’t on his shoulders that the offense took so long to get the ball back in his hands
kemba may never evolve into a point guard who can make confident, quick and good decisions, but he can work in our offense quite well if his shot is falling
unfortunately for maggette, kemba’s big fourth overshadowed an terrific game by him, he was energetic, getting into the paint and to the line and he was going after loose balls, forcing turnovers and overall being the player paul silas expected him to be before the start of the season… i’d like to see him cut out the long twos, especially since he was having his way with iggy getting into the paint
btw if anyone told you that iggy, brand and turner would combine for 15 points, would you have thought we would’ve lost?
thats a gimmie
just ask who the other team was, if Bobcats then yes I would think that we lost.

I looked at Iggy's stats and said there is no way we should've lost this.
Then I scrolled down and seen Lou Williams.

Actually
they have been on and off like that since last season. Iggy really stepped up as a distributor last season and the 76ers have the “small” weapons around him that make him effective. Williams, Meeks, Holiday ect…
This is why I want to surround Walker with those shooters and wingmen. Once a player gets that confidence in his teammates (esp PGs) that can get a little creative with the ball. And they can direct their offense. Too many slashers isnt good esp for a pg trying to ESTABLISH himself as a pg. Look at Paul. The names that surrounded him weren’t the best but they were all good at their roles. Marco. Willie Green. JR Smith. Ariza. Davis West. Tyson Chandler.
He's on pace to be the first in 10+ years to lead his team in scoring without making a start.

solid game
Love seeing Maggette attack the rim and draw quite a few and 1’s.
Right now, I really believe once we get everyone healthy – why is Diaw starting? And what’s up with DJ White being MIA – both are subpar defenders imo but at least DJ is a bit more aggressive and won’t give you the crazy turnovers that Diaw is prone to.
The game got away from us a little at the beginning of the 4th when we had Mullens/Thomas/Brown/Carroll and Higgins on the floor – that didnt last too long but the damage was already done the brief time they were on the floor.
Gosh I don’t even wanna keep ranting on TT – dude was getting pounded by Thad Young on the block (weight room?) and was just out of control on offense as usual. Honestly it just feels like this guy did jack squat during the summer/lockout which is extremely discouraging.
The ball movement dies when Diaw isn't in the game.

Ease up
Yal shud ease up on poor higgins. Hes trying and is young. Ur all asking to run dj outta here. He reads this stuff and cant wait to leave. Wat do we have left. Kemba is really trying but he cant guard anybody. If his man aint killing him at will at any given pt in the game , they put him in a pick and roll where hes switched onto a big whc is a sure two pts.
The offense must create easy buckets in the paint.

DJ to the Rockets
for a 1st and TWill… That way they can go ahead and get Gasol and give up Lowry without feeling SOOO bad.
focus' favorite player
is little more than a throw in player to anyone else
Exactly...a thrown in player
with a 2yr contract…so is Flynn’s… The deal was something like this…
http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=7y79kqm
I mean we could take Jordan Hill instead and add yet another PF/C to our roster…
If we want a first for both team
we gotta take what is considered “garbage”…I mean we could take Patterson but we aint gon get a pick and we really dont need a PF unless we gettin rid of Tyrus, Diaw and White…And if we plan on taking Anthony Davis, then what is the point of having Patterson?
i mean i have my doubts about him being worth a pick
a late first, at best
so a
14ppg 7asst 3reb player that got these stats by distributing for the BOBCATS cant get a late pick and a salary dump trash player?
i said a late first at best
DJ is best suited as a 6th man and would be on most teams in the NBA not named the Bobcats and Lakers. I like him, I want the Bobcats to keep him, but it’s not like people throw around first round picks like candy in the NBA. When was the last time a player around DJ’s caliber garnered a first round pick?
Especially since DJ is an expiring and would almost certainly have to be a sign and trade. No one’s going to give up a first rounder for someone who isn’t guarunteed to be around more than half a season. I mean, it’s not DJ is a valuable expiring. He doesn’t make enough. I’d wager Boris and his 9 million is worth more as an expiring than DJ is right now to anybody but the Lakers, Pacers, Hornets and maybe the Nuggets and Suns, depending on Steve Nash’s future.
It's not all that infrequent.
Indiana got a #1 and two #2s for George Hill, who is totally unproven.
Houston got a #1 and Goran Dragic for Aaron Brooks, who isn’t much better than Augustin as an overall player.
Chicago got a #1 for James Johnson.
New Jersey got two #1s for Joe Smith, Terrence Williams, and two #2s.
Mareese Speights and Xavier Henry were traded for each other. So were Quincy Pondexter and Greivis Vazquez. All are mediocre recent #1 picks.
And that’s just since the start of last season.

all of those are late first round picks or not picks at all
which i’ve said is what i estimate dj’s worth to be – late first round picks are generally off the bench guys, which is what DJ is probably best suited as
Houston got a lottery protected pick, meaning if Phoenix is in the lottery, they get Orlando’s pick instead. Chicago got Miami’s pick from Toronto, which will probably be the last or second to last pick.
George Hill was traded for actual already drafted players, not unknown draft picks.
New Jersey got a fair deal, IMO. They got a lottery protected and a top 18 protected for two players and 2 second rounders.
the only team i could see us
trading dj for a first round pick inside the lottery is new orleans, but no matter what we’d have to do a sign and trade
