Bobcats Lose Steam, Fall To Pacers 99-77
Box Score | PopcornMachine GameFlow
(ed. note: tonight's recap was done by Andrew Lynch, a contributor on ESPN's TrueHoop Network, where he writes for Hardwood Paroxysm and their Phoenix Suns blog, Valley of the Suns.
When the night started, it seemed as though the Charlotte Bobcats would give the Indiana Pacers all they could handle - and more. By the end, the road team was simply trying to keep their composure, as the Pacers blew the doors off of the arena in the second half to secure a 99-77 win.
The Bobcats backcourt came out firing, particularly D.J. Augustin. Augustin scored seven quick points to secure an early lead for the Bobcats, and Gerald Henderson followed that barrage with a three of his own. Then the universe imploded, as DeSagana Diop picked up his first field goal (and points) as a Bobcat this season.
With an 11-4 run early in the second quarter, though, the Pacers managed to narrow the gap to within two points - until Henderson resumed the Bobcat backcourt domination with a stretch of six points in four possessions, including a gorgeous open look off a Diop screen that was positively Ray Allen-esque. A six-point lead at the half was built largely on the backs of Augustin and Henderson, who combined for 22 of the team's 49 points before the break.
While Indiana shot slightly better than Charlotte in the first half and managed got to the foul line at a decent clip, the Bobcats destroyed the Pacers on the boards, particularly on the offensive end. They grabbed almost half their misses (and limited Indiana to two second-chance opportunities), with Byron Mullens and Augustin, of all people, pulling down three offensive boards each. As a result, Charlotte took 11 more shots than Indiana over the first 24 minutes.
The start of the second half was Bizarro World for the Bobcats, as five of their first six or seven shots in the third quarter came from Diop or Boris Diaw. Four of the five were shots that the Pacers would prefer the Bobcats take, particularly two Diaw threes with time left on the shot clock, but a beautiful Augustin/Diop pick and roll opened the scoring for Charlotte. Unfortunately, it was the only Bobcats score in the first three and a half minutes of the third period, and Indiana took advantage of porous defense to get to the rim and take their first lead of the game since early in the first. They stretched that advantage to eight deep into the third quarter, thanks largely to poor shooting and stangant offense by the Bobcats. Charlotte was bailed out by a Mullens tip-in off of a Hibbert block and Henderson three-pointer as the shot clock expired before Augustin decided he'd had enough and buried what appeared to be a 28-footer. Augustin contributed to eight of the 14 points the Bobcats scored in the third; in related news, the team scored 14 points in the third to enter the final frame down eight.
As the Pacers locked in on defense - and make no mistake, much of Charlotte's inability to score in the second half can be credited to the efforts of Danny Granger and company - things got chippy; Henderson took umbrance with George Hill falling on top of him and hesitating to get up, ending with a WWE-style kneeling fireman's carry-to-suplex by Henderson. After another trip down the court ended in a rash offensive foul on the Charlotte shooting guard, coach Paul Silas was forced to remove Henderson from the game just when the Bobcats, down 13, needed him and his scoring the most.
The fourth quarter was more of the same. Jeff Foster realized it was time to feast, finishing with seven fouls (three offensive) in just thirteen minutes and earning a standing ovation from the home crowd. Boris Diaw fouled out with a 4x2 - two points, two assists, two rebounds, two blocks. The Bobcats continued to rebound their own misses at a decent rate but failed to turn those extra shot opportunities into points more often than not. The Pacers maintained their strong shooting night in the face of lackluster Charlotte defense, but the Bobcats couldn't sustain their total advantage on the boards; they grabbed just as many offensive boards in the second half as the first, but that was more a product of their increasingly cold shooting as the game wore on. Even Indiana's poor effort from three (2-for-9 on the night) wasn't enough to drag down a team that secured a victory on the strength of their defense and the lack thereof from the Bobcats.

I didnt get to watch the game tonight
But I can tell it was bad. Also heard the Pacers were being some punks tonight. DJ had a solid night but only 4 assists (im sure MP will overlook that because it wasnt Kemba) and Hendo had a double double. I am no longer a fan of Silas he is clearly in over his head .
Hard to get many assists when the rest of the team shoots 31%.
Or should I have been impressed by Walker’s 3-10 night because he had three assists?
Personal attacks are the weapon of the ignorant.

didnt DJ get the assist on Diop's second basket too?
"I don’t want to shoot my mouth in my foot, but those are games we can win."
Let me help you out MP, because clearly your bias has overwhelmed your thinking (as usual)
Rookie Kemba vs Rookie DJ through their 1st 8 games…
DJ Augustin:
23 Minutes per game
3.5 Assists per game
9 Points per game
2 TO per game
34 FG%
21 3PT%
Kemba Walker:
20 Minutes per game
3 Assists per game
10 Points per game
1 TO per game
39 FG%
32 3PT%
SO, at this early stage in their careers, Kemba IN FEWER MINUTES leads Augustin in EVERY category except assists, which he only trails by a half an assist. I have no clue if Kemba will be better than DJ in 3 years. But at this stage in his career there is NO reason to assume he won’t be.

And that MP is what you call getting owned
Your wrong Procton. But just keep hating because people like making fun of you. Nobody take you serious your just a pathetic joke MP that hopefully will get old soon and leave forever. I wish you would realize no one wants you here.
I wish you would realize that you're contributing nothing.

Besides saying ridculess things that nobody else on earth thinks and pissing people off?
Good work.
I enjoy seeing information like this.

Augustin
But, it’s the 2012 version of Augustin competing for playing time with Rookie Kemba. DJ is putting up 17 pts and 7 assists (10th in the league) and is 40% from behind the arc this season. And, excluding the Miami blowout, he is averaging 19 pts and is 43% behind the arc. I think both are legit NBA starting point guards, and I can definitely see growth in DJ from last year and am pleasantly surprised. DJ is now required to shoulder even more of the load, as he is basically the go-to guy in Maggette’s absence and therefore becomes more of a focal point of the defense.
As for last night, no one had a great game.
Long-term, I still think Kemba has a higher ceiling. But, Kemba should earn his playing time like anyone else, and do believe DJ deserves to be “in the conversation” for long-term starting PG for us. Final thought is that, as we see guys like DJ, G Henderson and Kemba grow, maybe Jordan is getting closer to shaking his rep for not drafting talent.

I completely agree
I was just pointing out that comparing DJ after he’s had time to improve, to Kemba (without any off season training) after only a couple weeks on the team is not fair at all. I’m trying to judge Kemba verse other rookies.

If Walker wasn't doing anything during the offseason to improve his game...
he has nobody to blame but himself.

And Augustin was being bashed at every opportunity by his coach, whereas this coach has installed Walker as the lead scoring guard on the team.
Ridiculous comparison.

And Kemba started this season after about a week and a half of practice
Both have their disadvantages
You bring up a great point... DJ's thin skin vs Kemba's thick

How would we know?
We don’t have Larry Brown here anymore to berate his under-30 players.

But Kemba had no off season
Want to explain to everyone how he still sucks with no offseason and how we should expect him to be the best PG in the league.
It's not ridiculous in the slightest.
What’s ridiculous is shrugging off cold hard facts as something irrelevant. In fact, it’s downright ignorant.
He will say anything to try and prove he is right when he knows he is wrong
This is why we need to get rid of him he contributes nothing but arguments that not only make sense but that just gets everyone worked up and we dont need his negativity on this blog that is so great. Im tired of getting on here and reading what he has said about Kemba or BB that doesnt make any sense. I mean clearly he will never stop and he will not accept facts when they are presented to him he is like a drunk person you cannot reason with them. I mean its not like we should feel bad if we ban him because CSR already has and we can clearly see why he is a terrible sports fan and anyone that enjoys talking to him is just as crazy as him. If no one will ban him then fine I guess we can continue to listen to this crap.
And im sure MP will say Im just doing this because I dont agree with his opinions....
No that is not it at all i am not a jerkoff like him I dont care when I disagree with me I just try and argue and if I get nowhere then I dont care. But Procton is a completely different animal he is a troll. I dont want MP on here because everything he says is ridiculess and he has no facts behind it. Take his Cam Newton and Kemba arguments for example, have any of you ever seen him use factuals data to prove a point? No he just says it and wiats for everyone to prove him wrong then says the exact same thing only in a different way but still with no facts or evidence and it is all negative he has never said ANYTHING good about this team, PEOPLE HE DOESNT EVEN ROOT FOR KEMBA HE PRETTY MUCH ADMIT IT!!! The dude is not a real fan and he is becoming a cancer on this blog. I mean everyone on this blog whenever they argue uses actual statistics and data he just says the same thing over and over it is a broken record that needs to be busted into a million pieces. If the managers of ROF want to allow this kind of senseless behavior then so be it but me personally I am getting tired of it and im sure others of you are. And trust me I would not feel so strongly about this if he didnt make such ridiculess statements and if you could actually debate with him, but you cant because he will not listen to evidence or facts.
Well that's just factually incorrect, as usual
In this instance, we are talking about the first 8 games of each player’s career. Find me one quote or shred of evidence that Larry Brown “bashed” Augustin in that time frame. LB is the dude that insisted that the bobcats draft DJ, and you suggest he was already killing him 8 games into his rookie season. POPPYCOCK! The bashing came well down the road.
Yet again you completely dismiss someone’s argument based on whatever random false piece of data you can conjure up. The only thing that’s “ridiculous” is your lack of perspective.
Charlotte: Where rebuilding happens
Poor Diaw
I still dont know what he wants.Focus on the next game,DJ should keep passing the ball and scoring. I’m looking forward
When is one good game every 4 not enough?
Put him on the bench.
Ask Charlotte Bobcat. He's the one who thinks Diaw is so great.
This is how I roll, animal print pants out control.
i think he is good
he has a ton of skill, its just his personality of being laid back that kills us.
"I don’t want to shoot my mouth in my foot, but those are games we can win."
Love the recap Andrew, very well put.
Also, props to Ben for making sure other people and viewpoints are brought to us this season. It’s nice to see.
Stomped again by a mediocre team.
To be fair, Biyombo had a stunningly adequate game, though he continues to brick anything that’s not a gimme (and he misses plenty of those, too.) But we are kidding ourselves if we think this is anything but one of the least talented teams in the league. We started DeSagana Diop tonight. Seriously. Read that again.
Personal attacks are the weapon of the ignorant.
Panthers '011: This is what we've been waiting for...we get to overpay the core of a 2-14 team!
Proc...
Can we agree on this? On a bad team where u are starting Diop, as you noted, and you have Boris w/ 2 pts, and your in a 22 pt loss to Indy…..you gotta find more time for these rookies we invested in (to some’s disdain)!!! Kemba and the Biz with 18 and 12 min doesn’t make me too happy. U??
by mives36 on Jan 8, 2012 2:17 AM EST via mobile up reply actions
Playing time
I think they will get more time as the season goes on. Biz, in particular, missed most of a shortened pre-season. While the rule of thumb is that PT equals growth, I think they’re bringing along Biz at an appropriate pace given where he appears to be at development-wise.
Also, as it relates to Kemba’s playing time, DJ is also young talent and there’s only so much of the game during which they can share the backcourt.
Diop started because of Hibbert.
I expect 25 per night from Kemba and 20 for Biz by season’s end.
by CatsFan_Chris on Jan 8, 2012 1:16 PM EST up reply actions
Biyombo isn't ready for more.
If you’re looking to lose by 30 or 40 rather than 20, sure, that’d be a fine tactic. But they need to earn their time the same as any other player, and they’re not close to the best options at their positions.
Personal attacks are the weapon of the ignorant.

Darn it.
We disagree. If you’re gonna lose by 22, then I think it’s just fine to lose by 30 and give the youngsters PT (even though I say we mighta lost by less). And we are talking about earning PT on this squad What has Diop, Carroll, etc shown that deserves more PT than the rooks. Dumb. DJ had 40 mins, we can’t find 20 for Kemba??

Hahahaha
Had to laugh my balls off at your “earn playing time on this team like everyone else” comment. Just remembering watching Matty cluelessly dinking around the court….Diop and Diaw so outta shape and garbage the Coach won’t even address them….TT pulling minutes in his return…
by mives36 on Jan 8, 2012 2:08 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
Yeah, we need to ease Biyombo into more minutes
Personally, I don’t think he’s as inept offensively as he looks at times. He just seems a little nervous and uncomfortable and he’s rushing everything. He needs more practice and slightly increase his minutes, as we don’t want to hurt his confidence either. I like the kid though and think he’ll be just fine a few years from now.

I think it's more inexperience than talent
Granted we are not very talented at all defensively. But we seem to be able to jack up a lot of points at times. The problem is sustaining that, and not cracking in the 2nd half… Which sounds to like a youth problem.
This is how I roll, animal print pants out control.
Indiana isn't mediocre.
They’re probably in the Top 4 of the East.

The lineups suck...
the personnel sucks. Period. Our team is really just a bunch of players. Its so obviously unorganized. Thats the problem. People say “role players” but I cant say that bc no one has yet to be designated a role. We are just going out there and freeballing. Of course we were killed by injuries but I would think we would sign a fill in. We only have two consistent shooters and one is a center who is starting to take too many shots. If Mullens is in the game, then a POST PRESENCE should be in the game to rebound. He should not be in the game with Diaw. No one respects Matt Carroll’s shot so in turn, Kemba is the focus of the defense. Put Higgins in the damn game or cut him. Tyrus is ok but he doesnt fit here. His style is better suited for PHX. He plays 100miles faster than everyone else. And he shoots entirely too much. I like Hendo’s scrappiness but he still displays the qualities of a 6th man. His game is still raw. I hope we are very active at the deadline. I hope Cho is either reading my posts (like he always does) or is working on some deals to propose at the deadline.
I doubt Cho is looking to you for advice
But I agree that we look kind of all over the place at times. It’s more likely due to a lot of new faces, no practice time, and then a rash of injuries thrown in on top of it.

Off Topic but Kinda on
Do yal remember Andre Emmett? Well if you’ve watched bball for awhile then listen here. The kid is in the d-league and he is beasting. He is exactly what we need to fill in for Maggette. He’s a scorer and rebounder. (He scored 71 in China a few years back). He’s now avg 22pts 5rebs and 4asst…he doesnt take many 3’s but he’s 50% from out there now. Do it Cho. 10day contract
It's a league rule?
In other key dates established by the league for the truncated 66-game season, 10-day contracts can be signed starting Feb. 6; non-guaranteed contracts become guaranteed Feb. 10; and the last day to sign a player and have him be playoff-eligible is March 23.

Bobcats Best Player
DJ Augustin might be the Bobcats best player because he comes out balling each game but is not getting any help. Tyrus Thomas has to play better because he was a lottery pick that we got from Chicago. I have given up on Boris Diaw, he will be gone during the trade deadline hopefully for someone that is consistent. Derrick Brown is garbage. Bismack is just raw and needs to work on his game.

Augustin the best player??
That was funny. Sure he leads them in scoring, but do they win? Inconsistent, terrible defense, no court presence, and he doesn’t finish that well at the rim. Boy, I sure see why Silas starts him. Lol. This team shouldve followed the Panthers pattern. Draft a proven winner in college and make him the man. Build around him. Instead, Kemba has to “wait his turn” for some odd reason behind a guy who’s three year career average is ten points and four assists a game. Ridiculous!
Btw Procto, you still think Cam isn’t the best player on the Panthers? Maybe his 40% completion percentage in the PRESEASON made you feel that way since you were always quick to point that out. Lol.
Anyways, Silas needs to wake up. The longer Augustin gets more minutes then Kemba, the longer they will lose. Good luck Cats.

That’s right, nothing. I’m stunned that you’re bashing Augustin for being exceptionally productive on a bad team when that’s EXACTLY what Newton did.

You just think every rookie sucks. I mean your pretty much saying the kid that broke Mannings rookie passing record and had a better season the Manning his rookie year. So Peyton Manning sucks because you have to say Manning sucks if Cam sucks.
Certainly not.
Andy Dalton was great. AJ Green was great. Aldon Smith was great. Contributing at a high level to a team that actually does something is what makes a player’s success relevant. Anything else is fantasy points.
