Charlotte Bobcats vs. Atlanta Hawks preview -- Game 7
Today's Tunes:
"Caffeinated Consciousness" - TV On The Radio
Game Overview: The Bobcats are a young team that struggles to put everything together on a single night: ball movement, defense, focus, rebounding and boxing out, shooting well and picking their spots effectively. When they do, things like convincingly beating the Knicks happens, but when they don't their lack of talent shines through, as it did in losses to the Heat, Magic and Cavaliers.
The Hawks are reeling from a triple-overtime loss to a Miami Heat squad that was without LeBron James. Oh, and Dwyane Wade. Yeah, it was bad. I caught much of the last four quarters and all of the overtime periods. The Hawks struggled defending the pick and roll with Jeff Teague and Josh Smith. Smith is a frustratingly good power forward who thinks he's a small forward. He can be efficient on offense in the paint, but will not hesitate to launch difficult long twos or threes. Horford is the star of the team, an extremely talented center, who relies on strong rebounding and post game to hurt teams inside, but often sees too few touches. There's also Joe Johnson, the overpaid aging shooting guard. He's yet to crash, but Johnson's not quite the player he once was. He can still launch bombs and play the iso-Joe way, but he seems to be less effective.
Tracy McGrady has been a good pickup for the Hawks as their sixth man, surprising many that even without his athleticism, he's still a strong shooter and passer. And the newest curiosity in the NBA comes to the Hawks from the D-League in Ivan Johnson. Johnson is a brute of a forward, strong as hell and fearless. More than a simple Reggie Evans, he showed he can shoot a little and has some pretty good court vision (though lacking touch on his passes, as Al Horford found out). However, it seems he fouls a good bit. Still, look for him off the bench: he's the scary dude with the grill.
Edit: Hey, Tyrus Thomas is back tonight!
Key Matchup: Boris Diaw vs. Al Horford - the Bobcats have been most successful when Boris Diaw can find space to traverse between the three point line and the paint, spacing defenders until they have to bring help defenders, which creates passing lanes on cuts or leaves shooters open, making for assists or hockey-style assists. If Diaw can be guarded one-on-one by Horford, then the Bobcats will have to rely solely on Augustin and Walker to find teammates for plays.
Fun Fact: Matt Carroll currently has the fifth-worst PER with -0.84. Ouch.

With them going into 3OT id hope we would try and push the pace this game. Hawks killed us in the preseason so we may be looking for revenge. I hope Bobcats get the W tonight

Not only did they go to 3 OT last night
But tonight’s game is the middle game of a back-to-back-to-back for the Hawks, who have to play again tomorrow. We should take it to them early and often tonight and they’ll throw in the towel and rest for Saturday.

Who is
gonna get backup minutes for us tonite? Or is Maggs gonna play?
Still no Tyrus Thomas sighting?
Not resigning Cunningham was a mistake. Everyone knew Maggette wouldn’t last a full season. I would really like to see Biyombo, Mullens, & Walker on the floor at the same time. Good luck Cats, should be a W if they have their heads in the game.

excellent music selection.
remind me why we play matt carroll in anything but garbage time minutes
Boone Logan is a good boy. So is David Robertson. Team A.J.
Oh, that's easy.
Because Reggie Williams is still recovering from surgery.

What exactly does Williams do for us THIS season?
Potentially making us win more games than is beneficial to what some of you have claimed is our overall plan?

I can only speak for myself, but...
I couldn’t care less about some grand scheme to suck ass now and get a high pick in the next draft. If we can compete and be successful THIS season with the pieces we already have, I’m all for it.

My feelings exactly.
I’ve never been the one for tanking on purpose. The whole thing was giving our young guys on cheap deals time to develop and see what they have. Getting a high draft pick was always just a side effect of our real plan. If this core that we have can compete for a playoff spot now, that just means we’re ahead a schedule and need to be adding to what we already have instead of looking for the next star.

My only concern with this is Diaw.
Chances are very high that we won’t have him next year. He’s already demonstrated being a very important part of this team.
Let’s pretend for a moment that we do fairly well. I don’t think we’ll make the playoffs, so let’s say that we barely miss out. We then lose Diaw this off-season and get a crappy lottery pick. Our players get better from another year of playing together, so next year we also barely miss the playoffs. I just don’t see the upside.
I hate to say it, but I think our best option is to get a great pick, play the young’uns so they improve as much as possible, and build from there. I just don’t want to see us waddle around in mediocrity for a couple more years. I’d rather us be terrible and really improve. I want us challenging for championships. I’m willing to take a bad year or two if that’s what it takes.
You're assuming young guys like Biyombo, White and Mullins don't improve
If they do… say Biyombo becomes a stellar defender and Mullins our top scorer. Then they’d be getting Diaw’s minutes and while you’d lose Diaw’s ball handling, you gain defense and buckets.
Perhaps that alternative would make us a better team down the road???

Am I the only one
who feels like we have the next Dirk Nowitzki in Mullens? The more I see him play, the more excited I get about his ceiling.

Lol. Not quite Dirk, but he's awesome with pt.
Looking like he’s back at Ohio State.

No, I assumed they did improve.
Enough to make up for the difference of losing Diaw.
“Our players get better from another year of playing together.”
Either way, our players are improving this year, yes? They will be better next year. If they aren’t, well, we have problems. But we lose Diaw. That’s a big blow for this team. Our PG’s aren’t exactly the best distributors (though I expect them to get better). Diaw helps make up for that. Like it or not, he’s a valuable member of this team. That’s why I’d like to see us play a lot of close games, win a few, but get a top 3 lottery pick. Get a player that will make up for losing Diaw — then we have something. Our players improving will already make up for that loss, so by getting another stud, we’ve just greatly improved ourselves.
Well if that's the case it only makes sense to move Diaw and Maggette as soon as possible.

I would be all for this.
It gets our young guys more playing time so they improve faster. They are players that we, as fans, can really get behind. We’d understand the losses a bit more but still be entertained. Personally, I really like it. How soon can we trade Diaw and Maggette? :P
What if your team's max potential is like .500?
Being this young we’d endure mediocrity for years, without ever being able to suck bad enough to draft that marquee player
This is how I roll, animal print pants out control.
My thing is...
we’re fresh off a draft when we selected two guys in the top 10. Whose to say that we already don’t have that marquee player in Walker, or maybe even Biyombo? Whose to say that Mullens won’t turn into the American version of Nowitzki, or that Thomas won’t shed his erratic behavior and become an absolute beast at the 4, or that Hendo won’t continue to improve in leaps and bounds until he is considered one of the premier shooting guards in the league?
All I’m saying is, I like the potential of what we already have a helluva lot more than the potential of what we might be able to get with a high draft pick this upcoming offseason.

We do have a lot of potential on this team.
I like it a lot, too.
But know what’s even more amazing? Having the potential of a Drummond, Barnes, or any of the other top choices in addition to our current potential. Then I’d be confident that one or two would break out and be stars.
Let's run em off the damn floor.

Thomas will go tonight.

I would think this means
we can expect to see some obscure lineups tonight, as well as an addition from the recently cut guys like SF tyler griffin.
look for mullens, thomas, diaw, augustin, walker at some point for sure.
as well as diaw, biyombo, thomas, henderson, walker.

a-stoudamire on the block now for a d-howard package
is this what happens when diaw goes for 27 against you?
I still say its not unreasonable to get involved in a howard rental. think about the advantages of getting rid of thomas’ contract? plus its looks like howard and deron williams are unified in loafing to get to dallas this summer. can we offer expirings for picks to dallas to help them and get 1st rounders in return?

I'd assume he'd continue to, and work Thomas in slowly.

With this team, I don't mind being without vets
Just means more opportunity for the youngins, in games we’d likely lose anyways.

I like seeing us win, but am fearful of winning too many
I think we have shown that even though we are far from being a great team, we still have the firepower to win a lot of games. I’d love nothing more than to kick some Hawks tail… But if we win too many of these, then we will be right back to mediocrity, barely good enough to miss out on a potential franchise changing lottery pick.

It'll be easier to stomach
since we will have flexibility to add to the core this time around. You can still accomplish big things by having a very deep team and having all of your holes covered.

It's too early to worry about draft position
Things can change quickly and if we’re without Maggette and Williams for January, and if another injury or two hits us, it could get ugly quick. Just live day to day and hope we cream the Hawks, because I can’t stand them.

Larry Brown's mediocrity was a different beast, littered with aging, over priced veterans.
We have a roster full of youth now, and after next season, we will be completed cleansed of terrible contracts (depending on how you feel about Thomas). Maybe I’m in the minority, but I just don’t see such a big problem with winning now.

I just don't see that ever happen in the NBA
Sure you could probably think of a low percentage exception. But in most cases all the top teams drafted a SuperStar, and built around that guy.
I know you say it “could” happen other ways. But I’m considering the odds and thinking about what’s most likely.

Looks like Brown will start at SF.
I’m thinking he gets the same minutes he got off the bench and we’ll see more TT, Byron and Kemba instead.
The question is...
who will get playing time at the 3 when Derrick Brown needs rest. Matty Carroll? Hendo moving over? Diaw defending marvin williams at the 3?
Diaw at the 3, Flip a coin for Mullens & Biyombo at the 4 & 5.
Add a drop of Diop only if absolutely necessary.
