Charlotte Bobcats at New York Knicks preview -- Game 6

Today's Tunes:

Game Overview: I've had the pure unadulterated joy of having watched most of each of these teams' most recent game. Before I got booted from a closing Starbucks, I saw the Raptors put the screws to the Knicks. When I left, the game had become what I described at the time as "like watching poop dry". The Knicks without Amar'e Stoudemire are rough. Carmelo Anthony (and I guess Toney Douglas, sure, whatever) was pretty much the only player who could create his own shot or plays for others. Tyson Chandler holds down the paint, though with the Knicks jacking tons of threes, he's not as effective on offense because long rebounds do him no good. Their bench was a trainwreck, save for the nice little surprise Josh Harrelson has turned out to be. But, the rest? Mike Bibby is flat out awful. He has a negative PER. He's shooting 1-10 from behind the arc and has a FG% of 18.8 percent. And then there's the rest! Jared Jeffries! Bill Walker! Steve Novak! Renaldo Balkman!

Luckily for Knicks fans, Stoudemire and Iman Shumpert should be back, who can add a hefty dose of offensive firepower for New York.

And on the other side of things, I just got done watching Bobcats-Cavaliers! Are we sure Larry Brown still isn't coaching the Bobcats? Because that was some fantastic defense! Surely a frontcourt of Stoudemire-Chandler can't take advantage of the Bobcats' D.J. White and Boris Diaw, right? If anything, the Bobcats need to wall off the paint and force the Knicks into jump shots and take advantage when each team puts out their bench. But this team cannot wall off the paint from many teams, especially any team with Amar'e Stoudemire and Carmelo Anthony. This could get ugly, but what do I know, maybe the Bobcats have one of those games where everything falls into place and Boris Diaw magically grabs a ton of rebounds and facilitates a buttery offense. The Bobcats' speedy guards will probably give the Knicks some trouble, though.

Star-divide

Key Matchup: Kemba Walker vs. New York City - homecoming! Time to show them what you're made of on one of the basketball world's biggest stages.

I get the feeling that Melo is going to have a big one tonight

Mags with Brown in spurts is not going to slow him down.

I think the key is to stop Amare and to put alot of pressure the secondary scorers like Douglas and Shumpert so the offensive burden falls to Melo.

Could also be a good game to unleash Byron and his mid range jump shot – could be very effective in getting Chandler out of the key if he hits a few early shots as Chandler will have to honour him on the defensive assignment.

Other than that I wouldn’t mind seeing Bismack get a shot at playing on Amare, and Kemba and DJ abuse Bibby offensively – Bibby couldn’t guard a chair.

Now that we've seen that we actually have two legit Centers on the roster (Biz and Mullens)...

Why not freaking start one for defensive presence if nothing else? They might still get their lunch eaten, but their length can’t hurt.

NBA League Pass Broadband at nba.com, though that has blackout restrictions which means I can’t watch Bobcats games there. Mostly now I use mysynergysports.com, which has no blackout restrictions, though it’s really choppy for watching a game all the way through

Hendo on Melo?

Yeah. It's probably best to just leave Maggs on him the whole game.

He’s been playing surprisingly well on defense. Just garbage everywhere else.

I have a good feeling about this game, for some reason.

From what I’ve seen with my eyes, New York’s offense is really, really, really bad.

Lol.

I wouldn’t call beating the Knicks overachieving. They’ll be mediocre for years to come. Tyson Chandler. Pssshhhh!!!

SG xavier henry

was part of 3 team trade with griz, sixers and hornets. all the hornets gave up was a future 2nd rounder, they get a flyer on a prospect who could score in bunches in college but was behind a bunch of wing scorers in memphis. he will now have a chance to score on a team who needs scorers, and wont be expensive. plus anyone who can shoot and give us 14 plus per night is gonna help, we need scorers in starting and from the bench, henry could provide either.

I have a problem with this trade on 2 levels. one problem is why cant we be the one giving up a future 2nd for a young scorer looking for a chance like xavier henry. he could be behind magette and at the least score better then matt carroll. second C maresse speights was in this and was had for basically nothing as well. sure we have some help in mullens, but a post banger like speights on a charlotte team trying out rotations this season would surley help out. at least better then dijon mustard can “play”. this team is minus 14 in points so far , worst in NBA. we need defenders and speights would fill that role.

again, the draft plan by jordan and friends only works if you have a miracle worker like durrant who then also preforms another miracle by wanting to stay and help said small market. we need to be trading/acquireing young talent on 2 year deals/rookie deals or small 1-2 year FA deals. its gonna be hard to add guys to a team full of really good-not great draft picks. we need to do more then package augustin & najera for a future 1st this year. and we SURE need to do more then let diaw walk and save the 9 mill. these are 3 players who could be parlayed into players who DONT have albatross contracts, guys with 2 year deals, guys who can help or even lead on this blank canvas of a team.

We just got a competent center for a secound round pick.

Is that not enough? We also have Reggie Williams on the roster as well who is just injured right now. Stockpiling players like Xavier is only going to take us so far. We don’t have the roster room or the playing time available for his continued growth here.

kemba & bizmarkey

are the truly developing players, accepting of roles not needing to start or make the MOST impact on this team. for THOSE roles we need young players to step up like henderson and augustin and thomas. I am a fan of reggie williams, and think he will rotate with maggette as starter at SF once healthy, but the bench SG role should be wide open right now. far as I know that supposed to be matt carrolls role, and hes shown nothing this 2nd time around in charlotte. henry would have had a shot at showing his stuff and would have been given plenty of minuets because of carrolls decline. PLUS he would have been cheap.

I mean, I agree.

If I’m a GM then those are the types of players I’m trying to acquire. I’m just saying that Cho has done enough recently for me not to complain about deals like this that we miss out on. I try to determine his reasoning for not going after deals like this and it seems that we really just don’t have the room to add too much more at the moment.

I'm just saying we already have enough bodies in the fold.

Speights would come in and play PF/C in a front court that already includes Boris, Tyrus, Bismack, Mullens, Diop, and DJ White.

Xavier would compete for minutes with Maggette, Brown, Henderson, Carroll, Higgins, and Williams. Sooner or later, some of our developing players would have to be put on IR so other players could play and develop. We’re looking for a star. It’s eas to keep finding these role players on these low level deals. That’s what we’ve been doing. That’ll only get you so far in the long run. Right now we’re identifying which ones can stick for us and which ones can’t. So far, I see Kemba, DJ, Henderson, Bismack, DJ White, and Byron Mullens all making a case for why we should hold on to them for the long run.

Mullens will be a top ten center in the league if he gets starting minutes.

Have we ever seen a Healthy Bynum?

I always feel like he’s either recovering from an injury or seconds away from one.

He has been a monster through this point in the season (albeit only 3 games for him)

Like you said, it's only 3 games.

And he’ll be hurt and miss his share of games before the season is over.

That is unless he decides to hit someone with another cheap shot.
