Kemba is getting uncontested 15 footers every possession and bricking them. Those HAVE to become automatic.

But it’s not like this is unusual for us. One thing I would do if I were Silas is tell both Hendo and Kemba to get into the paint. Try to draw fouls or collapse the defense and kick out as the worst case if you don’t get a layup for yourself.

that's where a lot of our offensive problems start from

we just don’t have a consistent inside presence and we don’t take it to the hoop enough and on a night like this with their bigs – it’s even tougher.

I mean we tried to post up Mullens and I applaud him for trying but that didn’t look too hot. Diaw at least was being much more aggressive in the post but he just wasn’t hitting shots. Just the way this team is currently – we’re gonna end up setting for J’s and that’s what gets us in trouble.

by JPCats785 on Jan 31, 2012 11:50 PM EST up reply actions

But seriously though

Tell them to try to get the ball inside a little more (as hard as that may be) and keep your heads up. Don’t lose confidence in your shot just because it didn’t fall for you.

by JDeLong42 on Jan 31, 2012 11:45 PM EST up reply actions

i would say

hey you crumb-bums stop not playing the basketball game so bad. you should put the ball into the the net, but not from under the net because they it doesn’t count. also, try not to put the basketball into the net from behind the backboard because then your probably out of bounds and that’s not good. in conclusion, go team yay

sigh

Big thing is our frontcourt guys are just getting dominated. Bynum and Gasol are great players but we definitely don’t stand a chance when they have been getting as deep in the paint as they have. I mean Bynum was backing down Diop like he outweighed him by 100 lbs which I know isnt the case, lol. Mullens – just facepalm on his post defense which is no surprise.

Kemba had some nice finds – but man for all the talk about his mid range game he’s shot the ball poorly for as good of looks he’s been getting and this isn’t the first game either by any means. Not sure what the issue is (rushing it or what) but he just needs to get consistent draining the good looks he’s getting.

by JPCats785 on Jan 31, 2012 11:45 PM EST reply actions

At least he can get the looks

That itself is a good sign. Now we just gotta hope he keeps working on it and hopefully they’ll start falling.

by JDeLong42 on Jan 31, 2012 11:47 PM EST up reply actions

In response to your first paragraph

Diop was getting owned. Mullens tried hard, but just doesn’t have the footwork and technique to defend down low. This, in my most humble of opinions, is where you let baptize Biyombo by fire. What’s the worst that can happen? We’re down by 24, and Biyombo had THREE minutes. The only player with less time was Reggie. C’mon Silas. Let Biyombo LEARN.

i agree, to an extent

i can’t imagine biyombo has gotten any practice in europe gaurding bigs laterally since most of the bigs there are spot shooters, so he’ll get schooled just as easily

we need proper double teams… let worldpeace, fisher, barnes, murphy, at alia, take as many shots as they want… double bynum and keep hendo on kobe at all times and hope for the best

agreed

I mean Biyombo showed he would bang with Dwight – might as well let him go up against Bynum. We’re already down so much – might as well let him get some burn.

I’m a big Silas supporter but right now that’s the one thing I don’t agree with and it’s Biz’s PT. But I can understand from his perspective he wants to get some W’s and Biz may not be the best guy to play to help us but c’mon….. Diop shouldn’t be playing more than him!

apparently, byron mullens isn’t the only C we have that can’t defend the baseline… can we PLEASE get a real double team on Bynum? i simply can’t understand how a professional basketball team can be so fundamentally unsound… you ALWAYS lead the defender into the double team, and Bynum has been able to get through the Bobcats pathetic attempt at a double the whole three times they showed it

hope hendo doesn’t get discouraged, he’s gaurding kobe pretty well, although i’d like to see him give a little less respect to kobe’s crossover and trust his help defense instead of letting kobe take shots, even if they’re long shots… he’s kobe bryant, he’s not gonna miss that many

the difference is

he’s trying to play like a “3” and shoot off the dribble at times which isn’t close to what he can do.

He can knock down a 15 footer with his feet set. dang if he doesn’t even shoot that then he’s pretty much scoring nothing every game b/c he sure doesn’t have a back to the basket game either.

by JPCats785 on Jan 31, 2012 11:57 PM EST up reply actions

but

i’d much rather have tyrus backing down a sf than a pf… he doens’t use it often enough, but his back to the basket game is rather good

I actually posted that without having seen the 2nd half yet as I have it on DVR and I just went in my other room and saw Tyrus’ first 2 J’s and they were both off the dribble and the 2nd was pretty well contested and bad shot.

But yeah I mean if he’s got a good look and his feet are set – I’m ok with him shooting it. As for a back to the basket game – he definitely hasn’t shown anything from what I can recall all season.

Not necessarily

If player A is out on the floor with player B. And player B gives up 40 points to his matchup, while player A shuts his player out. It still reflects poorly on both player A and player B’s +/-.

by JDeLong42 on Feb 1, 2012 12:51 AM EST up reply actions

then player B should've played better help defense

not the term “team defense” from my previous post

There's only so much you can do to help improve team defense

If you’re a center, you can’t help it if your guards are giving up easy looks on the perimeter. And as a guard, there’s only so much help you can give to the post without giving up easy looks off kickouts.

by MichaelProcton on Feb 1, 2012 1:06 AM EST up reply actions

Yeah!

Because we have a real big issue on our hands when our rookie center isn’t good at guarding the three ball. When your Center can’t guard three point shooters, you might as well throw in the towel because you have absolutely 0 chance of wining.

by JDeLong42 on Feb 1, 2012 1:08 AM EST up reply actions

if your center also can't box out players

who aren’t particularly known for their rebounding, to say the least, then there is cause for concern, yes

Biz has shown the ability to box out better than he has tonight, but such a fundamental skill should be a consistent, nightly basis, ESPECIALLY against players he should easily outrebound

by adamcawa on Feb 1, 2012 1:16 AM EST up reply actions   1 recs

If that were a consistent problem, yes

But like you said, he’s usually better about boxing out. Tonight wasn’t a great game from him, I’m not denying that. But I’m not reading too much into it.

by JDeLong42 on Feb 1, 2012 1:21 AM EST up reply actions

im not trying to say

its the end of his career based on this one game

i’m saying, tonight should be a good indication as to why silas isn’t playing him more and why diop is getting the minutes many of you believe should be biz’s

by adamcawa on Feb 1, 2012 1:53 AM EST up reply actions   1 recs

I really don't have a problem with the minutes Biz is getting

He needs game experience. But if he’s not ready, we don’t need him picking up bad habits and losing confidence. There’s no hurry.

by JDeLong42 on Feb 1, 2012 12:10 PM EST up reply actions

he also allowed two offensive rebounds

and let, of all people, josh mcroberts run the floor on him and get a dunk

stop giving him a free pass because he’s a rookie, he played terrible, he has played terrible in the past, but hopefully he won’t always play terrible

by adamcawa on Feb 1, 2012 1:06 AM EST up reply actions

I didn't see the McRoberts play

So I can’t say anything either way on that. And I don’t know what you or anyone else expected out of him. He didn’t do much of anything tonight. I’m very aware of that. He’s also had a few very solid games. He’s inconsistent. Most rookies are. Especially “project players.”

I’m really not bothered when Biz has a bad game because I wasn’t expecting much out of him right away anyway.

MP don't agree too often

at least regarding controversial opinions, but we were both quite critical of the bobcats draft choices, with good reason

neither kemba or biz have really done too much to dispel our preconceived notions about them

Kemba simply can’t play PG at an NBA level and Bismack shouldn’t be learning how to play the game of basketball at the NBA level.

The difference between us is that I don’t mind, and truly hope I am, being proven wrong.

by adamcawa on Feb 1, 2012 1:20 AM EST up reply actions

Last two games Kemba has 17 assists to 5 turnovers

He’s filling the role better now than in his first few starts. I just want to see his shot fall more consistently.

As for Biz, he was in a situation where he was going to be learning the game at the NBA level. Some team was going to do it. That team just happened to be us. He’s shown potential, so I’m excited for his future. Am I 100% sure he’s not going to bust? No. But I’m confident he’ll be able to play a significant role on this team moving forward.

by JDeLong42 on Feb 1, 2012 1:26 AM EST up reply actions

Kemba is turning the ball over less

over the last few games, and that is indeed an improvement, however, his assist totals are a little misleading

take the lakers game tonight into account, for example, kemba got himself several open looks against Derek Fisher but didn’t hit them, meanwhile, the rest of the offense was stagnantly lingering around, trying to figure out what kemba was doing

if the pg is gonna go iso, he needs to make sure that the bigs know that he’s gonna shoot it and when he’s gonna shoot it, so they can get into position for a rebound

partially, this is silas’ fault (i believe) because we’re constantly hearing how he tells players if they’re open, shoot it

but getting some assists and not turning the ball over doesn’t make someone a pg… Kemba still hasn’t shown much ability to dictate the offense on the floor… he’s a rookie, so i’ll give him time, but he’s yet to show he can be a true point gaurd in the nba

by adamcawa on Feb 1, 2012 1:46 AM EST up reply actions

regarding biyombo

the bobcats were in no position to draft a young player and hope he develops… biz needs to be in the d-league if he’s learning the game, whereas most bobcats fans want to see him play 30 minutes a game

certain players can learn on the fly, maybe biz is one of them, but it looks like he simply has too much to learn and playing him heavy minutes is simply gonna ruin his confidence…. and if hes not playing heavy minutes, why not replace him with someone who does know what theyre doing while he can take the time to learn

by adamcawa on Feb 1, 2012 1:49 AM EST up reply actions

I think we were in position to draft a player like him

He weren’t going to be any good anyway. It’s not like we were one good draft pick away from contending. We have time to develop him.

by JDeLong42 on Feb 1, 2012 12:12 PM EST up reply actions

perhaps i'm overestimating

the time I think he’ll be ready to contribute on a consistent level in the NBA, but I’m thinking three seasons

we used the 7th pick on a player who won’t be ready for three seasons

i’m patient, and i’ll be more than happy if he turns out to be the 7th or better player in that draft, as it usually takes players 3 years to hit that next level in the NBA, but he seems so far behind where you’d even expect a developmental player to be at right now, i’m less than optimistic

by adamcawa on Feb 1, 2012 1:13 PM EST up reply actions   1 recs

That's EXACTLY the kind of team that needs to make sure it's not wasting picks.

If you’re already a good team (like the Lakers), you have a buffer against risky picks (like Andrew Bynum.) Worst-case scenario, you just dump that player, and you still have a good team. If you’re the Bobcats, you risk wasting one of the very few cheap, easy opportunities to improve your team, which can set you way back and create a hole you should have filled.

I agree wholeheartedly with your statements about the difference between getting assists and running an offense.

That was always one of Felton’s huge problems. Getting your teammates in the right position to succeed and finding them there when it happens is what a PG truly needs to do, and that’s not about athleticism or speed or quickness. It’s just about knowing the game. See: Knight, Brevin.

"he was in a situation where he was going to be learning the game at the NBA level"

But he didn’t have to be doing it for a team that DESPERATELY needs talent like this one, at the cost of a premium pick which we traded our best player to get.

I gotta stop takin' my baths durin' Peter's shenanigans.

by MichaelProcton on Feb 1, 2012 11:09 PM EST up reply actions

Because I don't know what comment you're referring to

I think we need to be more patient with Biz because he is the youngest player in the league and he’s a raw talent. The good games show what he’s capable of, and the bad games remind us that he’s still a rookie that has a lot of work to do.

Hmm...

So, out of curiousity, how is Biyombo better,m and what should I have been impressed by, his rebounding (0 of those), or shotblocking (0 of those?) Could you tell the fear of driving in the Lakers’ faces, because I know that’s not in the box score.?

With the way the Bobcats shot tonight.

I am happy with only 6 assists by Kemba.

And the single turnover is nice.

Though the fact that his 12-6-6 line merits the ESPN Player of the Game for the Bobbies is pretty sad.

I'm all for playing BB more than what he was asked....

to play tonight, but how in the world does someone(in 13 minutes of play) who is 6’9’ and has a 7’7 wingspan end up getting as many rebounds as I had in tonight’s game?
