Charlotte Bobcats vs Washington Wizards preview -- Game 21

Today's Tunes:

"Wailin'" - Outkast

Game Overview: Oh god, them again.

Luckily, the Bobcats will have Gerald Henderson healthy this time around, who will undoubtedly do a better job guarding Nick Young than Matt Carroll did the other night. Still the problem remains that Kemba Walker has not yet proven to be an apt facilitator while Augustin is out with a super-stubbed toe. Walker's been heaving shots like it's going out of style and seems to be struggling as he adapts from the move from the off-ball shooting guard in the starting lineup to the court general point guard.

The Bobcats will need to stiffen up their interior defense if they want a chance to beat this lowly Wizards team, which scored 60 points in the paint against Charlotte the last time around. DeSagana Diop starting and Henderson gradually recovering from his tailbone injury will curtail that a bit. I just hope this is a closer game than last time with something to see from the rookies.

Star-divide

Key Matchup: Tyrus Thomas vs. Andray Blatche -- Blatche was pretty good in their last matchup, notching a double-double and feasting in the paint, both scoring and dropping dimes to cutting teammates. Meanwhile, Tyrus Thomas still hasn't looked anywhere close to where he was on offense a year or so ago pre-injury.

Sad, sad fun: ESPN's Playoff Odds were released last week. Predictably, the Bobcats have a 0.0 chance at making the playoffs. Hilariously, they also have a worst-case predicted final record of 3-63, or losing every game from here on out.

Admittedly after being a fan since day one

this is the worst I’ve ever felt about this team. Even during our bad seasons (and trust me, we’ve had one every season.. Yes even the playoff season) I’ve never felt this bad before. I look in disgust at those who feel this is “ok” for whatever reason. Well Im not gonna completely stop posting but I will be around sparingly from here on out unless there is some transactions made. I enjoyed you guys but as a true/longtime fan, this is unbearable. This isnt nba2k where you can keep sending players to practices and if they have a “B” in potential, they’ll continue to grow. This is real life where players with “A” in potential never even leave the ground. And I see our direction of being more of the “lets get upside” over production…I cant watch it.

by focuslja on Jan 28, 2012 5:40 AM EST reply actions

I'm with you completely

I’ve been here since before day one. I use to troll the hornets fan pages(i hated harvey hornet) when they left town. Was like breaking up with an ex. I latched onto the bobcats with nothing but high expectations and this is the absolute worst. Our first year team was better than this one and it was built with a bunch of scraps.

I watched half the game last night, my parents wanted to know why I was leaving at halftime. I told them to look at the score and add 10 more points to the deficit. That is the best I could hope for and wasn’t interested in watching them crumble more. You shouldn’t have to wait 5 years to see a glimmer of light down the hallway. Each year should offer a bang, even if they finish with a whimper(playoff season). You know the saying “you’re beating a dead horse?” We’re the dead horse. Why do they even let us play the games?

by jovox on Jan 28, 2012 7:54 AM EST up reply actions

Weird

I’ve been a fan since day one and this is the first that I’ve felt like we are truly tearing the team down and rebuilding from scratch. It sucks to be watching these losses, but on the flip side, I know that the only way to go is up. I guess it is because I’m looking at thing in a more big picture style than a immediate search for positives.

Bobcats Basketball is my only pro sports passion...

I mean when

you are probably going to be somewhere around 10-56 then I HOPE there is no other way to go but up. But when you look at the whole frame of things, there was never a time where we actually a team to look forward to. And I sat and supported through that. I know Im a small fraction of a percentage of the fans but this is just my feelings about it. They are saying we are rebuilding but if you’ve been a fan of the game you knew the PLAYOFF roster wasnt going to last long enough to consider us “out” of our building stage. So Im not very excited. I know this is a business but businesses thrive on consumers. And at this point I dont care who we deal. But we need to deal. We shouldnt even start the next year with half of the players we have now…this is terrible.

by focuslja on Jan 28, 2012 11:26 AM EST up reply actions

I doubt we will.

I think a few players will be packaged together for better players.

by Charlotte Bobcat on Jan 28, 2012 11:32 AM EST up reply actions

Same, but that doesn't make the current games easier to stomach when you are actually watching them.

Plus, I don’t think we are really as bad as we are currently witnessing. Are we a bottom 3 team? Absolutely. But what happens when a bottom 3 team has quite possibly the worst injury bug in the league?

This.

Anyone notice last night how Silas’ son was smiling and giggling all the time? As terrible as they looked, he just kept on a smilin! LOL. They are not serious and quite frankly, this is hilarious to watch. They seem to take this as a joke, so should we. I just laugh now at Kemba’s chucking shots and dribbling no where, TT’s fall away jumpers, Carroll’s defense, Higgins dear in headlights look, Diops and Diaws belly’s, Mullens softness, etc. LOL. Try it tonight. No need feeling bad and complaining and getting mad. They make millions win or lose. I will be entertained laughing.

And them for that matter but I dont get paid millions. But I DO pay a very small percentage of the millions they make. As we all do. I live and represent the state in which they are assigned to. Understand where I’m coming from. Im not mad or upset but I’ve been here since Sac chose to give up the high flier benchwarmer from Alabama. Rebuilding didn’t just start to me. We never fully finished building the first time. And frankly I’m feeling a sense of defeatism. Sucks

if we end up finishing 3-63

would that not put us in the record books for largest losing streak? Even in a shortened season?

26 is currently the magic number

I know we’re bad, but I dont think we’re that bad. crosses fingers

by jovox on Jan 28, 2012 10:54 AM EST up reply actions

Worst of all time. In all categories.

Even the infamous 9-73 76ers of 1973 had a better win percentage (.123). A 3-63 final record would put us at .048 (rounded UP). As you already mentioned in your other comment, if we lose the rest of our games, we will have shattered the losing streak record of 26 (currently held by LBJ-less Cavaliers of ‘10-’11) by then.

I was super excited last week about going to tonight’s game because I don’t get to attend that many games. But the way things have been going past few games my excitement level has gone down significantly. But on the bright side heard they are giving away free Kemba Walker jerseys.

I have to say

doesn’t this stint without DJ Augustin make some of you appreciate him more as a PG? I’m not saying he’s the greatest thing ever, but it’s clear that without him we are losing by even BIGGER margins than before. Yea, I’m tryin to spin some positive juices here, but it’s not happenin. Can’t wait till we have a fully healthy team and we can get back on the road to 15 wins! With the current team we’ll win 6 games total. With a fully healthy team, I’d say 15 is on the high side, but do-able.

Also, open letter to Paul Silas;

IT IS NOT DOING US ANY GOOD TO ONLY PLAY BISMACK 12 MINUTES WHEN WE’RE DOWN BY 30!!!!!!!! GIVE THE KID SOME FREAKIN PLAYING TIME! CCCCCCCOOOOOOOOOOOAAAACCCCCCCHHHH HHHHHHIIIIIIIIMMMMMMMMMM!!!!!!

I fully agree

I don’t understand why we don’t give more minutes to Mullens at the 4. He can move a lot more which helps with his lack of defense, and also helps get him open to exploit his range. Look, he’s never going to stop taking outside shots. He’s in a rut right now, but he’s always been a scorer. We need to help develop that(along with defense). Having Biz at the 5 gives us a little more solidity in the middle and makes him less of a liability when guys like Tyson Chandler are terrorizing us. Trading Diaw for a pack of peanuts and a swift kick in the ass would allow us to start Tyrus or Byron at the 4 and then go from there.

We NEED to get Reggie Williams and Maggette back on the floor(ugh…maggette) because the fact of the matter is; we are desperately shallow at the 2 and 3 spots. Corey Higgins might be the only player to make me miss Garrett Temple and Derrick Brown is statistically the most blocked player in the NBA.

I don't doubt

UPS’ ability to get to the rim. He just needs to watch some Crash film and see how the Predator FINISHED at the rim/got to the charity stripe. THEN, UPS needs to hang out with Augustin and do nothing but practice on his TERRIBLE FT shot. haha. I want UPS to succeed like no one’s business, but watching him right now is incredibly frustrating. I have been one of the BIGGEST detractors of Corey Maggette, and I’d rather see him out there.

ive been on the Silas bandwagon for a while, he was exactly what we needed to recover from LB, but i think hes run his course here. obviously we have a terrible roster but still. we dont need LB back but we need someone whos a teacher. these guys need to learn the basics of how to play NBA basketball and I don’t think Silas can even teach them that. ive been advocating on other boards giving Jerry Sloan a blank check to come here. He knows the small market biz, hes a teacher but he doesnt tear down and ruin guys like LB did. He can teach us how to play

by CatNation on Jan 28, 2012 1:30 PM EST reply actions

I agree with letting Silas go

after the conclusion of the season, but Jerry Sloan? 10 years ago I would have been ecstatic about him. Heck, 5 years ago even! Right now, he’s basically Silas and LB with a better record. VERY old and not much time left. I think we need to be looking long term for a coach. I’m not saying take a chance on someone young and get Vinny Del Negro’d (nothing can convince me he’s a good coach).

He’s old but we’d only need him for a few years to teach this core how to play NBA ball. Younger coaches are nice for veteran rosters with established leadership but we don’t have anything like that. imo we need someone who really knows what to do

by CatNation on Jan 28, 2012 1:48 PM EST up reply actions

my other thought was D’Antoni if the Knicks let him go. someone like that who can teach an actual pick and roll. our offense now is just ridiculously bad

by CatNation on Jan 28, 2012 1:51 PM EST reply actions

its starts with the PG

Kemba, while starting, needs to learn to command his troops. Tell them where they need to be. Hold the ball and move guys around. As is, I think he just waits for guys to move on their own, throws the ball to an open guy, then scrambles around to get himself open for a deep look.

by jovox on Jan 28, 2012 1:53 PM EST up reply actions

i agree, idk if thats him or its by design but i feel like if Silas didnt want him to be doing that stuff he would correct him but its not happening. doesnt help that Silas Jr. history of guard development is what..Ellis and Curry? they can’t run offenses either. I’m just extra frustrated because he comes out and says “Kemba needs a more hands on approach, I’m gonna start calling more plays” then everything is the same and he gets himself thrown out. smh

DJ does a nice job of running the offense, he is top 20 in assist and top 10 in assist/turnovers. So you cant put Kemba’s lack of Passing ability on Paul Silas. That said i think next year its time for a New coach. Kemba needs time to develope a feel for the game it took DJ until his 3rd year to show that hes a starting PG. So lets give Kemba some time to learn the NBA game and remember the players Kemba has been passing to in the last few games. I dont know if Kemba will ever be a starting PG in this league but lets at least give him a chance to learn the game.

Does this bring of the panthers last year?

Either MJ has spent to much money buying these mansions that he is investing in are he just don’t give a Damn about the Bobcats? This team needs a trade bad and I wouldn’t care who we trade for but anything is better than nothing.

by jayball on Jan 28, 2012 7:38 PM EST reply actions

What would you do for a trade?

Let’s look at this honestly: what would you hope to get out of a trade?

We are rebuilding. The only way to rebuild is to lose. Otherwise, we spin our wheels in mediocrity. Yes, it sucks. It’s painful to watch. There is nothing enjoyable about it at present time. But this is how small market teams have to do it if they want to compete for a championship. Will next year be better? Probably a little. But with a little luck, we’ll get some nice draft picks, get our star/superstar, and then build around them. Let’s say we make the greatest trade ever: Diop for Howard. What then? We still miss the playoffs only this time we get a worse draft pick. We spin our wheels in mediocrity.

It sucks, I know. The losses will pile up. But we don’t need to panic just yet. Remember that a lot of this is because of injuries. If you hit that panic button too soon, we’ll just have to repeat this whole process next year or the year after. Take the lumps during a shortened season and let’s hope we get out of this sooner rather than later. It’ll all be worth it when we are competing for championships.
