Required Reading: No More Profanity

See here? You can't just call this guy a %#&! because he doesn't agree with you.

I've decided to implement a new rule in the Rufus on Fire community.

There is to be no more profanity.

If I see three comments that include profanity, you're gone. The first two will beget warnings.

Obviously, in the gamethreads, emotions will run high during frustrating or exciting games and it may just slip out. I can understand that and won't hold it against anyone. I will also judge somewhat on usage as to whether I would count it towards the three strikes (eg. "Oh hell, Gana Diop is starting tonight. Ugh" would be OK).

Profanity is inflammatory and evokes the worst in people, especially over the internet.

Play nice, dadburnit.

I never posted all that much on the site, but I lurk a good amount (every game)

The negativity and nastiness of RoF this season has brought my interest in participating way down. We all know the team is going to be bad, yet some act surprised when it is. It is as if the Bobcats became their favorite team after the lockout and there is no context for this season.

Being down our 4 of our top 5 players makes it even tougher. Until we are healthy again, remember how tough it is to compete with the number of injuries we have in addition to the lack of proven talent. Look at ANY roster in the NBA and imagine how well they would do without their starting PG, SG, SF, and 6th man. It wouldn’t be pretty for anyone.

However, as long as we do the following four things, this season will have been a success:

1. Make it through with no significant injuries
2. Get good value out of players we trade during the season (DJ and Diaw)
3. Get our young players some PT
4. Don’t finish with a draft pick outside of the top 5 in the 2012 draft.

Things will look up this year as we regain our health. Do remember the goals. We don’t want to finish last in or last out of the playoffs. We planned to be the one of the worst teams in the league for a strong draft.

One other thing to think about. The quality of the NBA is way down this year due to the lockout (injuries, lack of practice, conditioning, etc).

Here ain’t the only place ugly.

Don’t salt the earth of the fan blog in frustration over what we knew would happen. We need a strong base for when this team is able to lift itself back up.

If the quality is down leaguewide...

Why is it that that other teams so regularly look better than us on the court? Yes, we knew this team would be bad, but we should not have expected them to be totally non-competitive.

Personal attacks are the weapon of the ignorant.

The downward quality of the league is apparent in the inconsistency we see every night

The quality of the league is down, including us.

Orlando appears to be a contender, then they have a 35 point swing in a single game.
Miami is the cream of the crop, but they almost lose to us.
Washington is the bottom of the barrel, but the blow us out.
Dallas is barely treading water.
Philadelphia is one of the best teams due to consistent defense.

We will be more competitive once we have our starting lineup back.

By the way, you practicing law yet?

This is surprising...

I don’t use profanity on here, but I never thought RoF would get to the point where profanity would be seen as “inflammatory.” This decision seems totalitarian and unwarranted, but I respect it. This is a great site and I hope it continues to thrive.

I think it has more to do with the profanity targeted towards other people.

In that case, yes, much of the profanity being utilized is “inflammatory.” And it’s happened a lot this season.

Totalitarian? Perhaps. Unwarranted? I don’t think so.

by Tim Rudisill on Jan 27, 2012 7:23 PM EST up reply actions

I haven't seen you posting as much compared to last year,

but in my opinion the past few weeks far too many threads this season have turned into flame wars predicated upon cursing. I don’t care about cursing personally, but the bickering and fighting has made this a community I wouldn’t care to join.

I like the job Ben is doing here. I also liked the community David formed the past few years. There was a time when David had to tell us to tone it down too.

Cursing is a symptom, but the big thing is just being respectful. Otherwise these comments might as well be on YouTube.

Oh, one more thing:

Ben, is there a chance that the warnings will be erased after a certain period or would this be too hard for you to keep track of? At the very least, I’d like for you to keep this in your thoughts as you start to hand them out (or don’t hand them out, either way). No one wants to get banned when their first warning was 2 years prior.

Then again, another website that I frequently post at uses a warning/infraction system. Their warnings stay in effect for either 3 months or 1 year, depending on the severity. I’ve been tagged twice: the first time for 1 year. It wore off and the next day I got tagged with a 3 month warning. But I suppose that sort of thing happens when you’ve been on a website for years and haven’t re-read the rules in a long time. My point is this: I’m a constant contributor over there. Well-known and respected over there and I still screwed up occasionally. I’d be banned right now if the warning had not gone away after one year. I’m not complaining here – I just wanted to share my experience to point out that letting the warnings drop off after a while is a good thing (in my opinion, at least).

My interpretation is not that Ben is puritanical, but that he wants a community rather than Fight Club.

Here's the deal

I don’t want anyone using profanity to provoke response, like I’ve been seeing. I’ll judge swear usage on a case-by-case basis. I’m a pretty understanding guy, but it’s gotten way out of hand. Cursing makes people take comments that much more personally.

I want this to be a community with a range of opinions without everyone taking comments like attacks on their lives. Hopefully this will be a step in the right direction and maybe down the road, I can get rid of this.

Wow. Looks like I'll be coming here less and less. The other blogs I frequent (talking chop and car scratch)

Have zero problem with it (during game threads or letting it slip during long debates)

We are adults, no? People have emotions while investing so much energy into a team. I feel like a teacher or parent wrote this. Profanity never hurt those other blogs, and used to never hurt this one either (until people got overly sensitive). This used to be my preferred blog back a while ago, and profanity did not cause it to go down at all.

Hell if I was not allowed to curse on CSR the 2-14 year, I would never have gone on there and would have no place to vent. Knowing that others felt my pain enough to express it in all caps profanity helped me get through it. It is the same with the Bobcats this year..

Internet censorship on a sports blog (primarily for adults) is NEVER good (unless child pornography becomes rampant.), and knowing that one cannot fully express how they feel is sad.
Maybe football is a more aggressive sport so fans can handle more, but I never once have heard a single complaint about cursing being a problem there (although baseball is not and a gameday thread on TC is like living with sailors haha)

I completely understand if it’s attacks on other members (cursing at other members is not a good thing/what I’m talking about), that deserves warnings/bans, but I see NOTHING wrong with cursing at TT for taking a contested jumper with 18 seconds still on the shotclock… Actually that should be mandatory.

Going after people for personally attacking/cursing members is something I’m all for, but limiting freedom of speech that is directly solely at the game being played just does not feel right (it feels like private school all over again… Egad!)

I disagree.

One can fully express themselves without profanity. Heck, I remember watching a show where they were talking with this very religious woman who refuses to use curse words. Instead, she would say things like “Oh, fiddle sticks!” in place of “Oh, ****!” My wife and I laughed and laughed because what was she doing? She was cursing. Oh sure, she wasn’t actually saying any of the words that we usually attribute to being a curse word, but she was still expressing herself plenty and changing otherwise normal words into curse words.

Yes, it may feel better to let out one of the typical curse words, but we understand you perfectly well if you were to yell, “THOSE GOSH-DARNED BOBCATS DO NOT PLAY DEFENSE WORTH A HOOT!” Does it look funny? Yeah, but I’m sure everyone here understood exactly what I meant and nodded their head in agreement. Also, I’d argue that I did just curse, I just substituted a few of the typical curse words for abnormal ones. Yet for some reason, the way I said it is acceptable and the normal way of saying it is not acceptable.

Also, I could be misreading it, but I think what Ben is really going after is the personal attacks. He even mentioned in the main post that it can happen in Game Threads. He’s taking it on a case-by-case basis. Can you really think of any case where he would give someone a warning except if they are directing it at someone else? I can’t.

Are we being censored? Well, only slightly. We are basically being told not to be dicks to each other by hurtling profanity at one another. I doubt any of us would do that in person, so is it a big deal to lose that right over the internet, a medium in which we can’t properly tell when someone is joking or not anyway? I don’t think so.

by Tim Rudisill on Jan 28, 2012 12:40 AM EST up reply actions

if you read the actual post, that's pretty much what I said

I’m fine with the occasional profane exclamation, but not aimed at people. I don’t want people saying “well you’re a dumbass if you think that”. Again, every usage is under my review.

I’m basically just putting a rule to it in hopes of deterring personal attacks.

to banning would be to impose a monetary fine for the third and each subsequent offense. The money could then be used to help pay for the inevitable, extensive therapy that Rick Bonnell will require by seasons end.
