Charlotte Bobcats at Philadelphia 76ers preview -- Game 20
Today's Tunes:
"Oh God, Where Are You Now?" - Sufjan Stevens
Game Overview: You thought last game's starting lineup was bad? Well, I've got some bad news for you. DeSagana Diop is packing up his Waterpik and Croc-Pot and moving to his new residence as starting center. Also, starting point guard D.J. Augustin, starting shooting guard Gerald Henderson and starting small forward Corey Maggette are still out with toe/back/hamstring injuries.
This means the Bobcats will trot out Kemba Walker, Matt Carroll, Derrick Brown, Tyrus Thomas and Gana Diop into Philadelphia against a monster of a defensive squad.
Starting Gana Diop may add a little defensive bonus, but how much? He's slow-footed and overweight and he'll just be guarding Tony Battie tonight with Spencer Hawes' achilles bothering him. I'd still advocate for Biyombo to start, as wet behind the ears as he is. If he can't defend Tony Battie, that's a serious issue.
I haven't watched the 76ers much this year, but I do know this: you will not beat them without ball movement in isolation. Their defensive philosophy is to give less attention to midrange jump shots, the most ineffecient shooting location, focusing on defending the three ball and the paint. Andre Iguodala is one of the top three or four perimeter defenders in the league, helping force opponents into taking the most long twos (via Hoopdata) and having the worst 3P%. But though they are pretty effective at keeping opponents out of the paint, it is also where they are most vulnerable. This poses a problem to the Bobcats, who can't get into the paint to begin with.
More on the 76ers soon from Michael Levin over at Liberty Ballers after the jump.
The Sixers are a good basketball team. It's hard for my fingers to type those words because, well, in my heart of hearts, I don't particularly believe it. As much as it gets poo-pooed on, the NBA is a superstar's league, and the Sixers have no one that qualifies. They have a number of very good players that work nicely enough together that their skills can be blended into some haphazardly slipshod ball club that somehow wins games. And usually they win those games by a lot.
They lead the league in defensive efficiency and are 3rd in offensive efficiency, which puts them right at the top in differential. It's pretty damn impressive all around. They do pretty much everything well on the basketball court save for rebounding, which is due in part to the fact that Spencer Hawes and Nikola Vucevic have missed ample time (FRANCISCO ELSON THOUGH!), and getting to the foul line - the latter of which concerns me the most because of the constant settling for long jump shots that have, thus far, managed to find their way through nylon.
Save for Hawes (AKA Wight Howard) and to some extent Andre Iguodala (re: 3pt percentage), no one is exactly having a career year for the brotherlovers. I put a ton of their success on Doug Collins, who has shown that he can absolutely still coach a team. I've got plenty of qualms with DC in his in-game coaching choices (lack of Evan Turner for huge stretches, sticking the ball in Louis Williams' gut in crunch time while lighting the clipboard on fire), but he has gotten the absolute most out of this team and if he's not frontrunning Coach of the Year, then I'm DeSagana Diop.
Tonight shouldn't be very difficult because, as you know, the Bobcats are terrible. But in the scheme of things, this Sixers team is still a huge piece away from growing legs in a postseason run. Not to say that a high-volume scorer like Carmelo Anthony would help because that isn't the style, but a legitimate big man that can both protect the paint and score in the post (Rumor has it Dwight Howard would sign for the veteran's minimum) would get this team over the second round hump. The improvement of Evan Turner and Jrue Holiday is honestly worlds more important than a few extra wins this season, but because the new ownership is so on board with WE HAVE TO WIN NOW due in part to the miniscule attendance numbers, it seems like they're going to keep ramming their head into that wall and hope it'll break open before their skull does. That makes sense, I promise.
Key Matchup: Kemba Walker vs the world -- the Bobcats can't keep up this style of basketball in which Walker takes about a quarter of all the team's field goals. I get that he's the most talented healthy guy in this lineup, but he needs to get others involved. Paul Silas is going away from giving his point guards more free rein, moving towards calling more plays. Hopefully this structure will help Kemba develop more as a point guard. But if he reprises his role as "The Last of The Bobcat-hicans", it will be another long night.

I'm a Fan so I have to watch this Crap...
…but it’s getting more painful each game.
I’m assuming Biyombo will get as many minutes if not more than Diop.
Got to be honest…I’m a little dissapointed in Hendo not playing. With the Bobcats picking up his option year, their feeling he’s a leader of the team. He should tough it out.
I'm assuming it's the staff holding him out.
He played after the foul and seems pretty tough. With his history of hip problems it makes sense for a coach to hold him out. No sense in exacerbating an injury at this point in the season.
The option year and leadership aren't really related.
It’s a no-brainer to extend any player on a rookie deal who’s producing even moderately. Further, tailbone injuries really slow you down in a sport like basketball. Every step hurts.

Picking up his option doesn't
mean they view him as anything more than a promising player who has put in the work to earn it.

Diop starting over Biyombo is a crime against nature.
That is all.

Biyombo looks overwhelmed in garbage time against backups...
I can’t imagine that would improve with him in the starting lineup.

I hear ya... I would still rather Biyombo learn on the fly...
than for Diop to use playing time to get in shape.

That was the worst switch-leap I've ever seen anyone perform.
Her hands were terrible and, while being more graceful than a normal person, for a dancer she completely lacked that smoothness that a ballet dancer should have. Overall, unless that was a dance recital done by an individual dance studio (where everyone at the studio performs), she has no reason to actually be on stage.
Now that I’ve basically explained the parallels between her and the Bobcats, my secondary reaction is that this is the first gif you’ve posted that I did not enjoy. It really feels like whoever created it did so just to make fun of obese dancers. I’ve seen good dancers who were obese; this girl is not one of them. But, just because this girl is obese and attempting to do something athletic (while failing at it), does not obviously make it a parallel to Diop. Why? Because at some point Diop had enough talent to make it to the highest echelons of his chosen profession. It is highly unlikely that this girl will ever become one of the best dancers at her local dance studio if she can’t even get some of the basics down.

A fair evaluation.
I personally don’t believe in making attacks on the obese (exclusions include: Sean May, Ray Felton, Diop, and Boris Diaw).
In reality this was my back-up gif. I found a really awesome one of a kid trying to jump off a diving board and failing. But when I tried to post it the link was broken.
Yea, he looked overwhelmed against the best C in the NBA
He is a part of the future of the Bobcats and Diop obviously isnt. Biz will likely get more minutes too.
by Bobcats_Ball on Jan 27, 2012 9:55 AM EST up reply actions
Wtf are you talking about?
“Overwhelmed in garbage minutes?” So, when he was handling Dwight Howard, the best center in the NBA right now, he was “overwhelmed?” Whenever he comes in the game he gives energy on the defensive end, he plays hard in the paint, and he’s developing a hook shot.
I can imagine that would improve this line up. I really don’t get Silas at all. He justifies my reasoning for labeling him the worst coach in the NBA day after day.
"You ain't supposed to be smiling and giggling after we lose. I've never had the mentality of losing in my whole life and for a person to tell me you can't win them all, that's a loser's mentality." - Cam Newton
Normally I disagree with your stance on Silas...
But with Diop starting over Biyombo tonight, I have no defense.

+1
I still like Silas for this team over a hard ass like Brown, but some of his decision making has been very questionable. Not that I expect the team to win, but at least give Biyombo time over Diop. The season is a lost cause, and Diop isn’t as effective as Bismack anyway.

I was being sarcastic to that Protor genius
Im a huge Bismack fan and think he needs to play 20 plus minutes if not more every game. He does play with the most energy and will only get better with more playing time.

He's not Vinny Del Negro.
And he wasn’t Flip Saunders.
Nor Mike Brown.
Or Alvin Gentry.
Or Mike D’Antoni.
Therefore, he can’t be worst coach in the league.

Once in 20 games hardly establishes a pattern.
He’s 2-4-2 on 35% shooting since.

Dumb
Proc. Biz has been our best defensive player when he gets any playing time. He alters shots and protects the basket like no one else on this team (sorry Tyrus and your 9 bocks!) And NOT in garbage time. That’s false. We saw the Dwight matchup. Your ass was silent after that one. He does look overwhelmed…..
until someone drives the lane to Biz guarding the rack……then THEY get overwhelmed!!! I see it every game..Biz is becoming a feared defender, and they need to give him a shot.
Once in 20 games.
2-4-2 since. But I was REALLY impressed by his 2-2-1 night tonight!

He wouldn't be capable of starting for most other teams in the league.
Problem is, Diop shouldn’t even be in the league anymore, and, obviously, we’re pretty far away from “most teams.”

just did some quick calculations
tonight’s starting lineup has a combined PPG of 28.7. To put that in perspective, LeBron James is averaging 29.1 points by himself.
The whole Bobcats roster that will be available tonight has a combined 59 PPG.

Is the WNBA playing right now?
I might try to catch one of those games instead. Definitely higher quality of play.
No you won't. lol
That fact that you (nor I for that matter) have no idea about their schedule is very telling.

The "train wreck" we've been throwing around is perfect for me.
I really can’t look away. I have yet to even turn off a game as we continuously fall into 20 point deficits.

I'll be there.
This is a perfect storm for my 3 and 1 year old sons. They can be drawn into watching sports with dear old dad, but they won’t retain the horrible memory of this particular season as they grow older. I don’t even chastise them for cheering for the other team (what can I say – they only get excited for made baskets).
My 9 year old is lost already. He usually emerges from his room during Cartoon Network commercial breaks, glances at the score, makes some disparaging remark, and then disappears back into his pre-teen cave.

“dad, why do the bobcats suck so hard?”
lol...his comments are actually pretty high on the unintentional comedy scale
stuff like, “wow, we don’t have nearly as many points at the other team does.”
and “don’t both teams have to start at zero?”
