Bobcats Walloped by Nets 97-87, Augustin Injured

Box Score | PopcornMachine.net Gameflow

I missed much of the game due to technical difficulties, but what I did catch was frustratingly bipolar, vacillating between encouraging and chin-on-your-hand sighs.

Kemba Walker started the game off hot, scoring 11 points and dropping two dimes in the first quarter. Yay!

Starting point guard D.J. Augustin played only six minutes as what would later be revealed to be a slight crack between two bones in his big toe. According to Rick Bonnell, he'll have an injection intended to seal the crack, relieving his pain. Augustin will be out a minimum of three days, and if the injection works, he could be back by the end of the week. Aw, poop.

Gerald Henderson again showed his versatility on offense, driving to the basket and even hitting a three. Yay!

Walker turned sloppy, making some silly brain farts with his ballhandling and decision-making. Aw, poop.

Bismack Biyombo looked not awful on offense, rebounding well, blocking shots and forcing opponents to change their field goal attempts because of his length, quick hands, athleticism and defensive instincts. Yay!

MarShon Brooks nullified just about any defenders the Bobcats threw at him, including Henderson, on a variety of shots from all over. Aw, poop.

Matt Carroll took 11 field goal attempts, including this dunk attempt. This was the result of said dunk attempt. Aw, double-poop.

Star-divide

The Bobcats began the game featuring some sharp ball movement and rebounding, jumping out to a quick 7-0 lead, before the Nets awoke and began exploiting the Bobcats' weaknesses. Their first 10 points were all in the paint, as Deron Williams just went wherever the heck he wanted to -- in the paint, to the baseline, to Hoboken, to Jay-Z's new shut-down club in New York, anywhere. And then Williams began to post up Augustin. Williams is perhaps the best point guard on the block and recklessly wrecked Augustin in the post. Brooks followed his lead, backing Walker down as easily as someone about a half-foot taller than his defender can. Without a roaming safety to help on defense, Williams and Brooks scored nearly unperturbed. The Nets also overwhelmed the Bobcats' frontcourt with much more strength than they could handle, powering for seven first-half offensive rebounds and 12 second-chance points. Kemba's shot was falling early but whatever success he had early went by the wayside as he shot 1-for-8 after the first quarter. The Bobcats ended the first half down 16 points.

The second half was when I had problems watching the game, so I missed a significant portion of the third quarter. But I think I can fill in the blanks decently well. The Nets transitioned from banging in the paint and slicing to the rim to taking advantage of the Bobcats' poor closing out. Anthony Morrow feasted all night on the Bobcats' perimeter defense. Morrow's such a fantastic sharpshooter that you don't want to give up the three, but if you close out too strong, he'll just fake and dribble a step inside and knock down a wide-open shot. If you don't close in quickly, though, he'll take that inch of daylight and hit the trey. It's a tough cover for the Bobcats, who have to adjust to a weak interior defense, leaving their perimeter defense far too outstretched. And then there's Brooks, who can hit the long ball, but also take even the most talented defensive guard in isolation, including Henderson, who had trouble defending Brooks.

Charlotte would cut the Nets' lead to single digits on the strong play of Bismack Biyombo, who had 11 points in the fourth quarter. I get that those points came against Mehmet Okur and Kris Humphries, hardly defensive stalwarts. But considering this was a guy whose offense was said to be more raw than Eddie Murphy's 1987 stand-up comedy special, he looks to be learning quickly and is impressing me. His post moves aren't pretty. His footwork reminds me of Dave Chappelle's "Little Foot, Long Foot" sometimes. But no one ever said he'd be David Robinson. On the defensive end, he also impressed, as I mentioned earlier. I would also feel remiss if I didn't give Cory Higgins some credit for a fine performance. He's still far too confident in his long ball, but he's a decent defender and makes good cuts for shots at the rim. Well done, kiddo.

Despite cutting the lead to single digits, there simply wasn't enough time left. Nine points in 1:43 isn't insurmountable, but for this team it might as well be. I'm disappointed that Silas didn't send any starters back in the game to at least fight for anything. Kemba fell apart after the first quarter, but who knows if he could have gotten hot. Gerald Henderson undoubtedly would have been an improvement over Carroll. Whatever.

As a final note, I would really like to see Biyombo move into the starting lineup. I understand where he stands. He fouls a lot. His offense is as smooth as Shane Battier's skull. He occasionally gets caught with bad positioning. He also is showing that he's not completely incompetent on offense. He's the physically-strongest player on the team. He forces opponents to rethink their shots in the paint. I'd like to see what he can do in situations other than garbage time. What's the worst that can happen? The Bobcats lose more games? They're already doing that, and how! That Biyombo fouls a lot? Then you can sub him out for Mullens, who I think is close to his ceiling, both in the literal and figurative sense of the word. I want to see Biyombo given the space and time to develop in crucial playing time. It leaves the Bobcats unquestionably weaker offensively in the starting lineup, but it's not like he's on the court forever.

Besides, the Bobcats are freaking 3-14.

DJ getting hurt is gonna show alot of things

We’ll see Kemba running the show with “quality” teamates, we’ll see more of D. Brown, we’ll see a more balanced offense that should be a little more explosive and up and running.
One thing that puzzles me is why Biyombo and Tyrus don’t get more touches around the rim? We are a jump shooting team, but when those two get the ball around the rim, they have been having decent field goal percentages. Biyombo at this point should probably start for Mullens, Mullens shot hasn’t been falling and if he isn’t making shots, he really doesn’t provide anything else at this point, let him come off the bench and let the rookie get some run.
Tyrus has played alot better since he’s back at the 4 position, but it seems like Silas and the guys absolutely refuse to let him anywhere near the ball unless it’s a set play called early in the game or after a timeout in the 3rd quarter lol. I don’t understand that, at the SF position, (which he isnt good at) he gets 13 shots from the perimeter, in the paint where he’s in range, he gets 4 or 5 attempts. If you give the guy 40 million, get your moey’s worth and let him learn how to play inside. He clearly hasn’t scratched the surface of what type of player he can be, but it seems like we only want to develop Henderson and the two rookies, which doesn’t make sense since again, we paid Tyrus 40 million.
Kemba, defensively, was picked on by every player he tried to defend. We tried to hide his defensive short comings by putting him on Marshon Brooks who posted him every time, if Kemba switched on D. Williams, he also took him right down inside. I don’t know, Kemba is quick and he can get you points when he gets it going, but, it’s just going to take time to see how he grows in the league. With DJ out, this is Kemba’s time to take over the job, and I think he will from here on out be the starter as long as he doesn’t get abused or just stink it up in the games DJ is out.
From here on out, I would stick with the lineup of Kemba, Henderson, D. Brown, Tyrus and Biyombo. We clearly arent a very good team, but at least they can get a thorough development process. Tyrus and Biyombo can work on their offensive games inside, Henderson can work on his scoring off the dribble, Kemba can learn how to run a offense, and Mullens can work on rebounding and defense. That’s what this team should be about at this point. It’s a shortened season, the fans wanna see the rookies, we suck….so let the rookies play. Silas shouldn’t be upset over these losses because he knew this was a rebuilding period and we were in this thing for 2012 draft. Let’s teach these guys how to play the right way and develop our future players!

Poor rotations, poor pick and rolls, no boxing out, poor spacing, little help defense, weak gameplan, unprepared, no halftime adjustments, etc. All signs of BAD COACHING. Silas has got to be the worst coach in the NBA. What is he teaching these young players? What is his staff doing to develop them? Why was Kemba on the bench the entire fourth quarter? Why does he insist to keep players in the game that ARE NOT PRODUCING!?
If this staff was anything like a real coaching staff, no matter who you put in the game, they should be prepared and ready. Injuries are an excuse. Any good team will still win, despite who’s on their bench and despite who’s injured.
This coaching is very bad. The losses will continue to pile up unfortunately, until Silas is gone.

And after he’s gone? Some mystery coach will come along and magically turn a team that starts Byron Mullens into a winner? OK then.

Small ball

This small ball experiment is dead . It takes scouts about a week to catch up w ur new offensive wrinkles and another week for teams to adjust inc players practicing their post moves on little guys in practice. Now , even the crappy teams have adjusted and killed the cats from the outset. Pls note that the driving lanes for kemba and dj have been closed or narrowed as well as teams have adjusted. If they cant score heavily, they both dont need to be on the floor together and are huge liabilities.

Mullens has to stop jacking shots esp if his shots not falling. Thomas and bizmack have to get easy buckets fed to them around the rim. Henderson needs to keep his dribble and make even more plays off the dribble , be it drives or creating as he shud be the go to guy now but is not in the offense much in the first qtr or first half.

If kemba does not get in the paint and create as hes seen derron do and kyrie do , hes not helping this team. Think good solid passes first and then second, getn in the paint to create .

Its time to put diaw back in the lineup and white too.

Kemba is already I think are 2nd best player behind Gerald and I think he is better then DJ right now. Thats just my opinion.

uh

Anyone running the point with this roster will appear to be inadequate. This team is full of scrubs. We only have three legit NBA players Hendo, DJ, and Kemba everyone else is 7th maybe 8th man in a rotation on just a mediocre team starting with Tyrus. Najera? Really? Mullens starting? Really? Corey Higgins? MJ should be a shame of himself. He thought he lost money last year; another home stand of this crap every seat filled will be one that was a freebie.

by Freakdadon on Jan 23, 2012 7:33 AM EST reply actions

I'm sure MJ was prepared

For this. It has never been about the results for this season. Talent wise, we are one of the worst teams in the NBA. Combine that to injuries of three of our best scoters and this is the result. It’ll take time but we are actually in a better position to be a contender then the Thunder were. Durant was really their first player taken to start over. Our top pick will already be complemented by other developing players and we will likely have another lottery pick and the Portland pick to work with the following year. This is a short season and it will be over with in the blink of an eye. We will win some games here and there. Maybe even go on a three game win streak. But this is what is best for the city and organization long term. This wine and cheese crowd in Charlotte has already proved the wont support a team flirting with a bottom seed in the playoffs every year, so we need to take the safest route to establishing a winner. Which is also why it is vital for Kemba to do well while DJ is hobbled. I have a feeling not too many fans will be lost if the team has a player who looks to be a star. The wine and cheese crowd will still watch even if we lose if they have a player that inspires hope. Look at the Panthers. Trust me though, we are in position to become a pretty good team to step in once Boston, Orlando, and Atlanta begin falling out of the playoff picture.

And it has already begun for Boston and Orlando

Boston is old and Ainge is close to blowing the team up. Orlando is on the brink of losing their centerpiece.

I think we’re going in the right direction. I’m excited for the future. Everybody needs to be patient. Some people act like it’s a shocking turn of events that we aren’t any good. Isn’t this what everybody expected?

jdelong42 is right

We are in full-blown rebuilding mode, but it is the right direction for us to go in. We need high draft picks, so in games like this one you are just hoping for the promising players to develop so that they can surround the star player(s) we can hopefully acquire through the draft. We are a small market team, its the way it works in the NBA. Its hard to be patient, but if the balls bounce our way in the lottery, then its worth it.

This is Depressing

Just start Kemba at PG and Biyombo at C!!! Mullens has been given every opportunity to solidify a starting Center position with the Bobcats. If he wants to sit by and watch a 19 year old Rookie out-hustle, block and rebound him, then he should go back to the bench.

In 5mins of PT

I tend not to use numbers “stats” with players who only avg 5min per game. Is that really fair? But Im not saying you but I seen alot of ppl misjudge Mullens also. (Although I suggested him before the trade took place)…Sometimes its about what the player CAN DO. I seen him in college where he avg 21ppg and 9rebs. He’s athletic, he can shoot, he rebounds well, he can play both forward spots…AND he’s locked in for 3yrs for 1mil.

by focuslja on Jan 23, 2012 1:02 PM EST up reply actions

His perimeter defense is laughable and he’s not strong enough to guard any power forwards or big small forwards in the post. For a guy that “can shoot”, I would have hoped he could hit more than four out of 29 shots from 16 feet out or further in the past two years. And so very many of those were wide open.

However, he may be the best creator of Kobe-assists outside of Mr. Bryant himself! (missed shots that lead to second-chance points)

29 shots in two years at 5mpg? Are we really gonna judge that? I understand the post presence comment. But we know that he isnt gonna play major minutes at PF. But he is dangerous if we wanna stretch the court or play a faster paced game against certain teams. He is the same size as Tyrus. 6’9 225. And it doesnt take away from his ability to jump and rebound which is above avg. I mean its not like we are gonna start him. But I think he has alot more skill and actually basketball talent than Derrick Brown. Nor has he had a chance. He scored 21ppg, 9reb and 3asst in the d-league. It isnt saying a whole lot. But the kid has an all around game. And again, I think with playing time, being that he’s 23 and at 1.3mil for the next 3yrs, it would be kinda like having Dunleavy on the bench.

by focuslja on Jan 23, 2012 3:06 PM EST up reply actions

I mean, I honestly wouldn’t care that much if the Bobcats got him for a second rounder years down the road considering our weakness at the SF and his price tag, but I honestly don’t think he’s better than Derrick Brown.

LUKE BABBIT!!!!!!

BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

Seriously, Luke Babbit has been like death cooled down for Portland anytime he’s seen minutes. I mean worse than Brown, easily. More turnovers, more missed shots, bad shots, just an unjustified chucker.

I know I made fun of Terrico White, but he looks like Wesley Matthews compared to Luke Babbit.

by Aisander D on Jan 23, 2012 10:20 AM EST up reply actions

I'll back up that assertion with Per 36 numbers

From the 2010-11 Season:

Babbitt: 9.5 Points, 7.9 Rebounds, 1.6 Assists, 0.5 Steals, 0.5 Blocks, 2.1 TO
Brown: 11.1 Points, 6.2 Rebounds, 2.1 Assists, 1.2 Steals, 0.6 Blocks 2.1 TO

And the real kicker – Shooting percentages (not good in either case, but looks better for Brown).
Babbitt: FG% .273, 3P% .188, FT% .333
Brown: FG% .549, 3P% .333, FT% .532

To be fair, Brown (488) played way more minutes than Babbitt (147), so you could make the case that Babbitt hasn’t gotten his shot. But if you’re going to trade a player away for another player on the basis that he’s “great” and an improvement, then the player you’re recommending actually has to be those things.

by Aisander D on Jan 23, 2012 10:40 AM EST up reply actions

Again

I think he is a “Mullens” case. But I guess thats just me. I dont see the big difference between Babbitt and Parsons. Plus Per 36 can make anyone look great or terrible if used correctly. Look at the numbers that you just put up. Then look at the actual PLAYING time these guys have gotten over the course of their career. Shouldnt Brown be way ahead by now? And we KNOW he can at least shoot better than Brown…Brown AVGs for his career DOUBLE the minutes that Babbitt does. I’ve kept up with Babbitt since he’s been drafted. And even in his D-League stint (which was pretty damn good). But how can he be called a “chucker” of he only avg’s FIVE MINS a game? When do you actually get “warmed up”?

by focuslja on Jan 23, 2012 12:54 PM EST up reply actions

Well which argument is it?

1. Guys are what they are, even in limited minutes if you can’t ball, you can’t ball; or
2. Until a guy plays we’ll never know what he’s made of.

You made argument #1 in the pre-season against Henderson, but make argument #2 now for Babbitt.

So which is it?

by Aisander D on Jan 23, 2012 1:12 PM EST up reply actions

Henderson couldnt shoot

he’s a lil better now. He still cant create his own shot. He’s better than last year. And he’s actually doing well. But what can that be attributed to? The fact that he actually plays. Hendo is WORKING on things that he couldnt do. Even in college. There lies the difference. Where as Babbitt just isnt getting to play. Gerald is in his way and so is Batum. Would I let him get major minutes if I had those two on the roster? Probably not. Doesnt mean he cant play. I know Babbitt can shoot, dribble, jump, pass and rebound. And he’s a 6’9 lefty shooter. Good backup SF. Dangerous backup PF. Its not a matter of whether or not the kid can play IMO.

by focuslja on Jan 23, 2012 1:26 PM EST up reply actions

Enough of this “Hendo can’t shoot” crap. That guy made multiple great moves last night to create his own shot. That argument may be officially dead.

I gotta agree in the sense that you can’t really judge Babbitt to fairly because he hasn’t gotten any playing time. I think offensively he might be an upgrade over Brown but he most likely can’t guard anybody at the 3 or 4. I think that is a huge reason why he hasn’t gotten more playing time in Portland.
