Charlotte Bobcats at New Jersey Nets preview -- Game 17

Today's Tunes:

"Warning Sign" - Talking Heads

Game Overview: The 3-13 Bobcats travel to Newark to take on the soon-to-be Brooklyn Nets, who are 4-12 on the season. Both teams are on the back ends of their respective back-to-backs. For the Bobcats, they just finished getting manhandled by a short-handed Bulls squad that was missing Derrick Rose, Taj Gibson, Joakim Noah and John Lucas III. Chicago's suffocating defense thrashed the Bobcats, forcing 16 turnovers. Meanwhile in New Jersey, the Nets were defeated by the Thunder in a low-scoring affair where the Nets shot 31 percent.

The main cogs in New Jersey's offense are Deron Williams, MarShon Brooks and Kris Humphries, as well as Anthony Morrow coming off the bench. Deron Williams can shred ankles and dish like few others today and Brooks is proving to be a valuable scoring threat with his versatility to hit from range and sneakiness, as ESPN's Nets Are Scorching managing editor Devin Kharpertian says. He uses a lot of ball and shot fakes to throw off defenders. I wonder if Henderson will guard him with Silas switching Kemba/Augustin onto the more offensively inept DeShawn Stevenson. Kris Humphries may now be more famous (infamous?) for his short-lived marriage to Kim Kardashian, but don't let that fool you -- he's a talented big man with strength to post up on the block, good rebounding instincts and decent touch. And rounding up the New Jersey scouting report is Anthony Morrow, simply put a pure and smooth shooter. The Nets also have Jordan Farmar, a bunch of Williamses and Johan Petro. Fun.

Injury notes: Brook Lopez is still out as he mends from a fractured fifth metatarsal in his foot. D.J. White says he'll be fine after a left knee bruise suffered against the Bulls, but is scheduled to have an X-ray to be on the safe side. Corey Maggette is still out with his hamstring injury. Reggie Williams is also still out, but is able to practice and seems to be healing well.

Star-divide

Key Matchup: Deron Williams vs. D.J. Augustin -- Williams is one of the quickest and savviest point guards in the league. Augustin has trouble staying in front of opponents, despite his own quickness. I expect Williams to see many plays on pick and roll or running his man through screens. Augustin also has problems fighting through picks and with the Bobcats' weakness guarding the pick and roll (21st in the league against P&R ball handlers, 26th against P&R roll men), Deron Williams could spark an offensive threshing.

lets hope Hendo

Keeps getting better tonight! we need someone to step in and Produce some points….we go through 5 min every game where we just get lethargic on Offence…. and either loose the lead ….and go down by more points, or just go down by 20+ anyway…..we just need to find a spark on O………. and a Big Space eater for the 5… by trading Diaw…hes a fat waist of space!

"W" day

I just want to see Biz for more than 9-10 minutes!! Don’t bite the hands that feed you, Bobcats. Give these dang young, up-and-comers a chance to play. My only gripe today (again).

Here's hoping that BOTH of our point guards bounce back from a really lackluster game yesterday.

I didn’t see much of it (I tuned in with a few minutes left in the 3rd), but going off the box score, a “normal” night from either one of those guys may have landed us a huge upset. To Chicago’s credit, I’m guessing their #1 ranked defense had as much to do with our PG’s output as them just having an “off night.”

And yes, much more Bismack, please. (on that note, much LESS Carroll, please)

Yeah.

I was calling a women’s college basketball game last night right during the ‘Cats contest. I was pissed to miss it……then I got home and saw the box score. I’m just pretending last night’s game never happened and moving on to NJ. Good game to miss from the looks….

Hmmm....

Looks like it’s been a rough year for the men Nanooks.

Right on

Both men and women trying to right the ship here. Hard to recruit (and keep players) in Alaska. Men have a great new Coach in Mick Durham, but a few years from competing.

Been a while since these Nanooks became the first D-II team to win a preseason D-I tournament (Top of the World champs) in 2003. Great job calling games… wherever and whoever it may be!!!

The thing is...

they’re probably saying the same thing about us.

I just read an interesting article

where the future of our current team (as far as “changes” to the roster) is in question. Silas says “IN A MONTH OR SO THIS WILL BE A BETTER TEAM”…

i wonder what will happen…The Article is on on Hoopsworld but Im sure its on the Charlotte Observer site also…

Trades might be a part of it, but a large part of the article focused on the players developing and figuring out the best rotation.

by Handles Messiah on Jan 22, 2012 4:14 PM EST up reply actions

I still do not feel like they're trying to find the best rotation

Its more like they’re trying to find the least effective way to utilize their players

by jovox on Jan 22, 2012 4:19 PM EST up reply actions

Well I personally think

Silas takes too much flack for the rotations. Talent-wise, we are too inconsistent from game to game to really match players up according to their strengths. The only pairing that makes sense is Kemba and Mullens. That has really been the only consistent thing I’ve seen so far. So I cant really be upset with Silas. I also just strongly believe that Tyrus, DJA and DIAW are kinda being pushed by the FO to get playing time as we near the trade deadline. I dont think thats his call. I would go as far as to say that this is the reason Carroll has played every game. Just in case salaries dont work, teams wont mind taking him on the tail end.

I’d like to see Diaw walk. I dont think we can get much out of him at this point. Morrow and Wes Johnson being the most realistic and SMART trades we can make. There will be plenty of players at his position who wont demand much bc of the plethora of PFs in the draft.

by focuslja on Jan 22, 2012 4:31 PM EST up reply actions

I'm not blaming Silas per se

I’m blaming the Bobcats, hence using “they’re” instead of “He’s”. I agree with your comments on Carroll. I mean, Najera was played last night when we all know he’s useless.

I personally want to see Biyombo at C with Mullens at PF some. Gives us a mix of D and O instead of one or the other. The only thing that gets complicated when doing that though, is it pushes White to 2nd string and TT to 3rd, which I know wont happen. I think Diaw should be used as a 3rd rotation to Center since he’s apparently already checked out for us.

by jovox on Jan 22, 2012 4:39 PM EST up reply actions

I prefer to think of our inconsistency

as one of our strengths. Think about how difficult it must be on the opposing coaches to try to game plan for us!

need a trade bad

until the Bobcats make some kind of a trade this team will stink. The Bobcats need either Trade Tyrus Thomas are Boris Diaw to get someone That can compete.
