Bonnell: Bobcats not extending D.J. Augustin or D.J. White
Bobcats beat reporter Rick Bonnell said that the team will not be extending D.J. Augustin or D.J. White, effectively making each restrictive free agents at the end of their contracts.
Also, Bonnell says there is no update on a possible Diaw trade, but the Bobcats are trying.

Not a bad decision
This at least gives them a little more time to evaluate the talent on the team. They’ll have the cap space to match any reasonable offer, so they can let the market determine the value and make the final call then.
It’s not as sexy as a trade or an extension, but it keeps their options open, which is probably the priority right now.

Totally expected.
I thought there would be a small chance White would be extended, but not Augustin.

definitely smart because right now we have a bunch of parts but only some of those parts fit and never at the same time. Plus it allows the DJs to see what’s out there.
In terms of Diaw, if we arent just gonna let him walk at the end of the year than i want a late draft pick. That’s all.
I'm with you on Diaw...
If we are gonna let him walk, we may as well get what we can out of him. No way we resign him unless it’s for a micro fraction of what he’s making now, which I really wouldn’t expect him to accept anyway.

Yeah.
It’s time to clear the roster of all the old heads at this point. If they aren’t good enough to help us compete for a playoff spot this year then we really have no use for them in the long term.

I understand not extending Augustin. Really, I do.
but not White? I guess we’ll just match the offer from another team as long as it’s not absurd. At least, I hope so.

We can still negotiate directly with him after the season
He doesn’t have to look for competing offers, although he certainly has the freedom to do so.

It's curious exactly WHY they didn't though,
since it had already been reported they were negotiating a contract. That means both sides couldn’t get together to find a common price. Bobcats wouldn’t budge on one of their stipulations or White thinking he could get a better deal in RFA. I’m still plenty confident he’ll resign in the offseason, but the whole process is kind of strange.

As i stated once before
White is not taking some ‘lowball’ deal with Tyrus on the team. So I kinda knew they probably would have hard time reaching a agreement. Tyrus gets 7mil and doesn’t do what White is. Any agent would use that as a valid point. But I think also that the front office has their eye on several PFs. As there are many in FA and the draft. Anthony Randolph and Jason Thompson being two of my favs. Oh and B-Eazy.
This year's draft class
Six of Draft Express’ top ten prospects are power forwards, so that could play a factor, too. This at least lets them make a decision on White when they have a better idea of next year’s roster

Are we really, though?
Biyombo will (rightfully) be played as a center from now on. I think we can all agree that Diaw is gone, one way or another, by the time this season is over (hopefully sooner).
That leaves Thomas, White, and…? (please don’t say Najera)
I’m not including what I consider to be small/shooting forwards (Brown, Williams, Maggette), btw. Maybe that’s where our analysis is out of sync.

The draft seems loaded with bigmen at the top
If our wish comes true and we wind up with Drummonds, then even Mullins might be a good option for starting PF.

I've made this same point before
PF will be a little thin next year if we don’t resign White.
Choosing not to extend him says little to Charlotte’s long-term plans for White. I don’t see why they wouldn’t want to make a deal with him, though both sides are keeping their options open. Of course White wants to test the market now that he’s showing he can play, but that doesn’t mean he’ll get a huge contract.

Are you considering Mullins as a PF or strictly a C?
This is how I roll, animal print pants out control.
He could fill in at PF but there's no reason to count him at that position when he's clearly working well at C
You do have a point about picking a 4 in the upcoming draft, but that’s not a given right now. It’s certainly possible though.

Well it's about time
They can add Carroll, Diop, and Najera to that list. Man I really hope Augustin is gone next year or sooner. He was another wasted top ten pick, they should’ve took Lopez, but that’s neither here nor there.
Finally, Kemba can be given his well deserved chance to start and be the leader. Glad to see they are getting the point guard position sewn up. As a result, they will see more wins.

If White and Diaw are likely out, that leaves Biyombo and Thomas. I’d rather keep Biyombo and White, but I guess Cho and MJ see something in Thomas… Though I have no clue what that might be.

Tyrus is probably a better defender, maybe that's what they like
White however seems like he is good at everything, great at nothing… But isn’t that ideal for a backup?

by TheWhite Mamba on Jan 21, 2012 11:10 AM EST up reply actions
Actually, I meant this in a pro-White manner
Backups aren’t great or else they’d be starting. But most of them are often specialists at one thing… defense, 3 pt, etc. But White seems good at everything. I think that makes for an ideal backup. Somebody that can come in off the bench, and not have to sacrifice offense or defense.
This is how I roll, animal print pants out control.
I don't know that many people are proposing he start?
He’s a good backup, and if the price is right, why not?

problem is
TT is overpaid at 8 mil a year and I think management wants to give him every chance possible to at least get his value to match his contract and see if his potential could ever be realized. I actually agree with Focus on the point that if indeed the Bobcats/DJ White were negotiating – I could see DJ asking for a bit higher based on the fact he’s played better than TT all season. Maybe one of those things where we’ll let the market dictate whether we’ll keep him b/c the last thing I want us to see is to overpay in keeping players after we’ve worked pretty hard to gain some cap flexibility.
T-Time is 8 mil + a future 1st rounder
It’s almost like they have to keep him just because of the ridiculous investment.

if u really look at how bad TT is
It was a time when I used to say “hell no I wouldn’t give up Thomas for Harrington or Warrick or Bass.” But all of those guys are producing better than TT at this point. Hell I’d take Charlie V at this point. Or just give us a 2nd rd pick. Right now I can’t see us turning down anything that would tale his salary off the books…Yep. Not even Heywood. Give us Jordan Hill. Drew Gooden. U could package up Francisco Garcia/Greene/Whiteside OR Thompson. Tyrus gotta go
Are you talking about TT's production for this season?
I think we’re crazy if we think he’s lost it after a handful of games. He started with a sprained ankle. He’s playing for a bad team and he’s been asked to play out of his position. We’re clearly not seeing Tyrus at his peak abilities right now.

Every PF I named
above is better than Tyrus. And cheaper. Its no reason on earth that would justify us keeping Tyrus another season. We made the decision in 09 to trade for him and give him so much money. Its OVER. Let it go. That draft pick will eventually be Chicago’s no matter how we slice it. Let him go. We got too many other players that are developing and actually improving to keep hanging on to a dead investment. Again look at the FA PF and PF/C. And look at the ones still on a team. They are all better than Tyrus. Thompson, Jordan Hill, Drew Gooden, Randolph, Thompson, Harangody, Maxeill, Kaman, Illyasova, Bass, Tolliver, Beasley, Lopez bros, Speights, Hickson, Yi (who we shouldve took over Higgs anyway)…its too many to keep hangin on…
There's a simple justification for keeping Tyrus
No one will give anything of value in a trade considering his contract. You can name a ton of players performing better and with better deals. But those players aren’t getting traded for TT.
The Bobcats can’t trade him, so why wouldn’t they want to give him a chance to get back to his previous form? Tyrus played great when healthy last season. There’s no way to trade him. I’m not saying as a fan you need to give him any more chances. I’m saying that the Bobcats are stuck with him, and he can play a hell of a lot better than he’s shown this season. He’s going to get more opportunities.

Because nobodies interested!!!

It's a tough deal to pull off
Because there are teams who would like to rent him for a few months but the bigger issue is that we’re not willing to take salary back in the deal. The number of teams who want him and can send little back salary wise are few and far between.

I've been thinking
I know pretty much in 2 years all of our bad/unwanted contracts will be coming off the books….. Diop/Carroll/Maggette – it wouldn’t surprise me if we would be willing to take back some salary for Boris with a remaining number of years around 2-3 IF we could also get some draft picks back. In 2 seasons is when we’ll really have a ton of cap space and I’m not sure what type of free agents we’ll be able to attract to play for us at that time.
It’s a tough combination to find though b/c I don’t want a stiff back either and not sure who would have a reasonable salary/years left on their contract.
or they're just trying to read the market and maximize their deal
i’m sure someone wants him – it’s just a little early for borderline teams to decide whether they’re buyers or sellers
Boone Logan is a good boy. So is David Robertson. Team A.J.
if they could deal Boris
and actually get something of value – that would be impressive and pretty shrewed of Cho… like me running an assocation in 2k12 :)
So the rest of this season is pretty much an audition for Augustin
This is how I roll, animal print pants out control.
Just because we're not working on an extension during the season
Doesn’t mean we won’t trade him before the deadline.

Because we still have the opportunity to match any offer
And any team acquiring him also acquires the ability to match any offer he gets this summer and keep him long term. Plus, if it’s a good situation, some teams will feel like they can easily lock him up before he hits the market.

Except everyone already knows Kemba is our future
And we’re not going to get into a bidding war for a backup PG with a team that would start him.
This is how I roll, animal print pants out control.
I get it
But if a team really wants him they’ll have to bid against every team in the league, knowing we can always match too. That could sway a team to get him while they can and not risk out on something else happening.
I can see your point but there are risks either way. I doubt a team will have to give up a lot to get DJ.
