Draft Options Discussions: Michael Kidd-Gilchrist
The next player on Draft Options Discussions is the small forward out Kentucky, Michael Kidd- Gilchrist
It is clear that the favorite on this site is Anthony Davis which it should be but unless we get the number one overall pick (which is possible) it is not going to happen. That definatley does not mean that there are no other good players in this draft and one of those good players is MKG. I personally beleive that MKG could be the dark horse of this draft and tuen out to be the best player in it.
MKG is a freshman this year on a Kentucky team that has really hindered his ability to show his true potential with having to play with fellow draftees Anthony Davis, Terrence Jones, and Doron Lamb. His numbers are not amazing but the potential is through the roof this kid right now has no ceiling. Im not trying to hype this kid up to be LeBron because he is not but he does have that "it" factor and star potential and maybe even superstar potential.
I have been searching for something negative about this kid and I cannot find anything pessimistic to talk about. The only thing I can think of is right now snses he has not shown his true potential then we technically have no idea how well he will translate to the NBA. I of course have not seen him play enough to really provide a pessimistic point of view but im sure some of you can.
We currently have no SF of the future and we need scoring and that is two things he can bring. Oh and that is not all he is also an excellent defender and solid rebounder. If the Bobcats select MKG this year I will be anything but upset.

Way too soon to say.
If we fall in the #5-7 range somehow, sure he’d be nice. But if it’s the #1-4, there has to have been better options.

I would take him if we had the 4th/5th/6th pick.
MKG is an elite athlete. He has a great motor, he’s a very good/tough defender, he’s an excellent rebounder, and he’s VERY consistent. MKG is a natural born leader. He commands respect, and he shines when his team needs him the most. IMO, he’s a better version of Gerald Wallace.
Panther Pride 'till I die.
Favorite Player that fits our needs
Plays similar to Wallace, in that he can dominate both sides of the ball. Has similar dimensions as a Wallace/Pierce prototypical 3. Big man crush on MKG, so i wouldnt be upset in the least if we reached a little and snagged him at #2 or #3, as he fits our needs. Not as physically polished on offense as Barnes, but he wasn’t annointed from Day 1 to be the go-to scorer like Barnes and like already mentioned about how stacked Kentucky currently is. Not a lights out shooter yet, but i feel he doesn’t try to jack up unnecessary shots. Lots of athletic scoring in bunches and transitional buckets due to his hustle and defense. Unselfish and plays within the flow of the game. Smooth!!!!!!
An upgrade over Barnes.
Kidd-Gilchrist is much better on both ends of the floor.

My comparison for him would be a mini Josh Smith

I always thought
Smith and Wallace were the same players in different bodies. Except Wallace is not a deadly shooter…
Could Kidd-Gilchrist be the leader of this team or would just be another piece?
I don’t know, for me it’s too soon. I’m always a little weary with Calipari guys anyway.
Drastically moved up
I think Draftexpress has projected the best over the last few years. They definately have some of the best articles. Interestingly enough, Kidd moved from 8th to 3rd overall in the last week, so others see him as more than another piece. Thats big movement and One spot ahead of Barnes. Id take either SF with a veteran Jamison mentoring. Maggette probably won’t be here and who knows about Brown at the 3.
No way Brown
comes back. I’d rather see Babbitt or TWill behind MKG. Oh and let MKG start over those guys. But with Reggie Williams, TWill or Babbitt. Mullens and whoever is at the PG and PF(Hopefully Thompson, Speights or Randolph) we’d have a helluva bench…And CHEAP too…
Let's put it this way
Coach Calipari has said that, if he could, he’d have MKG play every minute of every game. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen a freshman with his defensive awareness and he gets it done on the other end, too. He may not be able to score as effortlessly as Harrison Barnes does (at times, particularly prior to this season), he definately exceeds him in most other areas, particularly on defense and rebounding. Most importantly, his best games have come against the toughest opponents.
Gerald Wallace is a fair comparison, although Gerald gets most of his blocks on trails and weakside, whereas the majority of MKG’s blocks come from his length and blocking jump shots, which he’s probably not going to be able to do in the NBA. He can get weakside blocks, but he’ll have to make that adjustment. It’s actually pretty impressive that he and Terrance Jones are able to get so many blocks themselves when they play with the nations’ leading shot-blocker and soon to be single-season record holder.
Calipari players may not always be the best character guys, but they’re definately NBA ready when they leave. Although with MKG and Anthony Davis, I’ve seen nothing character-wise from them. Especially from MKG. I don’t know if everyone knows his story but his father died when he was just three and he watches the movie Lion King once a week because that was their favorite movie together. He changed his named from Michael Gilchrest to Michael Kidd-Gilchrest to honor his late uncle, who had become the major role model in his life. He committed to Kentucky on what would have been his father’s 44th birthday and signed his letter of intent on the day his uncle passed away.
Yeah I've heard the story and to me the story itself should solidify him as our pick.
It shows his loyalty. I think being in a small market, we don’t draft the best player necessarily. We draft the best player with the most loyalty. We don’t want /need to end up in a situation like Orlando with Dwight Howard. We need a player that will stay loyal to this team throughout the rebuilding process. We need a player, that instead of planning his next career move, goes to the gym to work on his weaknesses. Kidd-Gilchrist, at this point, seems like our guy. With this deep of a draft, and depth of this free agency class, we can get a big man without passing up on Kidd-Gilchrist. I think he will become a star in this league. He seems to have the work ethic needed to improve year by year, like one of our Bobcats, Gerald Henderson.

to be fair to dwight
Orlando has consistently built the exact same kind of team around him every season. It’s only been this season, with the emergence of Ryan Anderson as a viable inside option, that someone else has been called upon to score inside. He’s been asking for help for three seasons and they didn’t get him any, and they didn’t get him any this off season. They just happened to get a guy on the inside who, up until this season, has shown little interest in bodying up anyone inside. Interestingly enough, Anderson’s willingness to score inside has opened up his three point game.
But if you were a franchise player who had been asking for help for three years and all they kept doing was surrounding you with more and more players who can shoot threes and play slightly above average defence, you’d want out too. Rather, you’d want to know you were being heard.
My question is...
How are his intangibles? Barnes is an excellent person on and off the court. And I think would be committed to the team who drafts him. Idk about this kidd, (Gilchrest) could walk at the first opportunity.
Let's Go Cats!!!
Thanks.
Well I would be happy to have him. May not be the most talented, but if we could trade for a 5-7 pick I say we get him! Use our top 5 pick on the best available talent.
