Charlotte Bobcats at Orlando Magic preview -- Game 15

Today's Tunes:

"Icky Thump" - The White Stripes

Game Overview: Both teams enter this game on the tail end of a back-to-back. The Bobcats collapsed against the Cavaliers, tallying zero assists in the final quarter against Cleveland. With Dwight Howard walling off the paint for Orlando, you can bet the Bobcats will have trouble finding their offense. However, Byron Mullens has the ability to force Howard to leave the paint. Regardless, if this is another game of Kemba launching 20+ shots, it'll be a long night.

The thing about the Magic is that they're well-armed with inside and outside forces. Howard can hold down the middle and Jameer Nelson is a quick little bugger that can penetrate the defense while much of their team is a threat for kick-out threes, like J.J. Redick. Hedo Turkoglu is a mystery, as always. His shot selection leaves you scratching your head but he can still drive and dish. In short, he's like their Boris Diaw.

oh god. expect to see lots of Diop

Star-divide

Key Matchup: Dwight Howard vs. people the Bobcats throw at him -- barring masterful gameplanning, I think we can expect a dominant performance from Howard on both ends of the floor, which in turn opens things up for the rest of the Magic.

Defensive. Rotation.

Without sharp, decisive defensive switches as we (inevitably) double Howard, this will become another three point clinic.

For the first time in a long time, maybe ever, I am looking forward to an extended number of days between Bobcats games to watch. We could really use the extra time off for practice sessions, and to just recharge altogether.

Rotation!

Yes! Dont over-commit help to Superman. He’s gonna do what he do. Lets keep The rest at bay. Mully…get Dwight in foul teouble!! Thats your goal today! Head fakes/pumps! Frusterate the big guy!

Given our struggles closing out, JJ Redick could be shooting open jumpers all night.

Should be fun.

I would like to see Biyombo play some significant minutes against Howard. Kind of defensive crash course.

He really got under Howard's skin the last time we played them.

I know it’s a pipe dream, but I woudn’t mind seeing Biyombo start, even if just to see if we can get Dwight frustrated on the offensive win.

I'd love to see...

Biz and Mully starting. Let Biz match Dwight on the D end. See if Mully can’t draw some fouls on the big guy on the O end.

Given that we're just about ready to call it a season

I’m all for giving Biz heavy minutes starting now. I can’t say that he deserves to start, but definitely 20 minutes per contest.

However, I don’t think Biz and Mullens would work well together at this point in their careers, especially matching up and Howard. If Mullens steps outside, Orlando can just put a perimeter oriented forward (they have plenty) on him and let Dwight stay at home in the paint, knowing that Biz isn’t a threat he needs to worry about. As infuriating as Diaw can be (he sure lost his edge quick this season), he works best playing alongside the Biz. He’s one of our most versatile weapons on offense, he can probably help Biyombo with some deft passing (think Kwame last season) and he holds his own on defense. Let Biz pester Howard with his D, let Diaw work his magic on the other end of the ball. The only trick is getting Boris to show up to the game. Sans motivation, sure put Mullens and Biz in there together. What the hell?

This is not a bad tactical idea.

Howard’s defensive reaction to two perimeter oriented forwards might be interesting to gauge. Against a frontcourt of Diaw/Mullens or Tyrus/Mullens (Howard would need to guard one of them), would Howard choose to follow a capable jumpshooting forward out of the paint. Or would he stay home in the paint and let his team run some sort of zone to cover those contingencies.

It’s at least worth a try. Anything to get him out of the paint and away from the basket.

Byron Mullens is bad at defending the Pick and Roll

My god, he’s terrible. I’ve never seen anyone choose to be in the absolutely worse position possible to defend it. It’s unbelievable.

by ClayM on Jan 17, 2012 11:48 AM EST reply actions

I saw it at OSU.

It’s always been that way. At least he’s chosen to rebound from time to time unlike college.

Yeah

Our pick and roll D is awkward. It looked liked the PG’s were struggling to get through…but I’m realizing that the bigs aren’t helping at all.

And bigs….it isnt ALWAYS a pick-and-pop on offense either!! You can actually roll to the hoop!!

it always makes me sad when I see Hendo defend the PnR with Mullens cuz I’m always like “nice job, Gerald!” and then Mullens picks terrible positioning and they score.

Icky Thump

Good track. I think we should nickname Biz blocks after this song.

“Howard spins to the basket! Elevates to stuff it…….Ohhh!! Biz with the Icky Thump! We are headed the other way!”

If you like Jack White checkout The Dead Weather

It’s Jack White and Allison Mosshart from the Kills (another really cool band). Dead Weather is like a more polished version of White Stripes.

"anothg er game of Kemba launching 20+ shots, it'll be a long night."

Way to rag on the most clutch player on the team. Too bad no one else steps up or shows in the fourth quarter, or for that matter, provides any kind of consistent offense in the second half.
Augustin, everyone’s favorite pg, scores 20 plus points, but they lose almost everytime that happens.
I’m done defending the most skilled, exciting player on this team. It’s clear the Bobcats don’t won’t to go in the direction of the football team. This team will continue to be a mess until they sew up the pg position. Just like the Panthers were a mess, until Cam. It’s really sad because Kemba has all the tools and charisma to bring life to this team, but everyone rags on his height, or his shots, or says he’s selfish.
Augustin is clearly not the answer, so they will continue to lose.

I don't want to get into a PG debate here...

but I don’t see why it’s supposed to be such a bad omen when DJ scores 20+ points. Yes, we have lost all five games this season when he has scored 20 or more points (it would help us out a ton if someone else joined him in the 20+ club on more than two of those nights, but I digress). We’ve lost a ton of games when he has scored under 20 points, too.

He’s done his part. Kemba has, as well (especially for a rookie). I personally think our biggest problems lie in our backcourt rotation and our overall defensive execution, but that’s just me.

I agree that our biggest problem is our overall defensive execution.

We need to do something to help that. The easiest thing I can think of is to get a good, hall-of-fame caliber defensive-minded coach. Larry Brown would be a perfect fit!

by Tim Rudisill on Jan 17, 2012 6:11 PM EST up reply actions

I’m just saying if Kemba is going to score inefficiently while using a large percentage of the team’s possessions, the Bobcats will be in a particularly large hole against a team that moves the ball well and can score efficiently from all over the floor.

which will make for a long night.

this is going to get ugly and fast. We cant defend inside and we cant defend the 3….That is the Magic offense…owell go Bobcats!!

Not sure how no one has mentioned Ryan Anderson yet.

Dude literally just went off for 30 points. If we want to win this game, we need some tight defense on Anderson. Ler Deight get his, but we can’t let Dwight AND Anderson get theirs.
