Bobcats Get Blown Out At Home By Pistons 98-81

CHARLOTTE, NC - JANUARY 13: Kemba Walker #1 of the Charlotte Bobcats drives to the basket on Ben Wallace #6 of the Detroit Pistons during their game at Time Warner Cable Arena on January 13, 2012 in Charlotte, North Carolina. For some reason, I'm not as downbeat as I was last night.

The Bobcats just got demolished at home against the Pistons, the next-to-worst scoring team in the NBA.

And yet, I don't feel like complaining. Oh, were there plenty of things to complain about, though! (But we'll get to those later) Maybe I've reached the 'loser's nirvana", where the result doesn't concern me. Last night, I was more or less embarrassed to say I watch the Bobcats play. They didn't hustle and were thoroughly dominated in all aspects save for free throws and blocks. Tonight it was the same story. Charlotte wasn't quite as astonishingly bad on offensive boards, but were still dismantled by an even-worse team.

Or maybe it's because the rookies played well. Kemba Walker was as efficient as his statline suggests, and more so. He had 16 points on eight field goal attempts, to go with two assists, two steals, two rebounds and two turnovers. He also looked much better on the pick and roll, finding the big man. Unfortunately on multiple of those situations, the good passes were negated by an offensive foul elsewhere, or Byron Mullens uncharacteristically missed a wide open jumper. Bismack Biyombo was pretty good, too. I am well aware Ben Wallace is practically a ghost, but one doesn't just lose rebounding fundamentals. Biyombo had a couple nice rebounds against him, but did not score against the five-time NBA All-Defensive First Team center. Biyombo really impressed in the first half, when in only eight minutes on the court, he tallied five blocks and had good quick hands on defense. Brandon Knight will have to think twice about driving with Biyombo waiting the next time these two play against each other.

Without that, I probably would have been more despondent about this game. Hit the jump for more reactions.

Star-divide

Usually I take notes during the game to make note of specific plays, trends I'm noticing throughout a quarter/half/game, or just whatever pops into my head. Tonight I wrote one note: "Defense porous. Not physical". And that pretty much sums up why the Bobcats lost this game. The Pistons were deeply rooted into the paint all night, giving the Bobcats a two-hour-long metaphorical colonoscopy. Greg Monroe established deep position on Byron Mullens all night. The Bobcats starting frontcourt doesn't have the strength to defend someone like Greg Monroe. On the other side of things, Boris Diaw had his own fair share of trouble with the quicker, longer Jonas Jerebko, whose finishing touch stymied his defenders from tipoff to until he left the hardwood. With the third quarter in the books, the Pistons had 50 points in the paint, while the Bobcats had 50 points total at that time. The Pistons would go away from the strategy in the fourth, adding only two points in the paint in the final quarter.

Tyrus Thomas once again started at small forward, guarding Tayshaun Prince. He was okay on Prince, defensively at least, though Prince is hardly a big offensive threat. Thomas' offensive performance was hardly notable either. He hit three of his four made field goals on spot-up jumpers. Only one Thomas field goal was made in the paint. The problem with Thomas at small forward on offense is that he can't handle the ball. He's too tall, and as such can't keep a low dribble.

The other really bad idea of the night was zone defense. Featuring slow (and sometimes non-existent) rotations and close-outs, the Bobcats defense permitted the Pistons to transition from dominating the paint to extending into the midrange and the land beyond the arc. In the fourth quarter, Detroit hit four threes in consecutive possessions, ending any hopes or intentions the Bobcats had on closing the scoring gap. If the Bobcats did any communicating on the court on defense, it must have been in whispers or via ESP.

As for the rest of the Bobcats, they were mostly forgettable. Byron Mullens and D.J. Augustin are really becoming quite comfortable with each other on the court, forming quite the duo. I lost count of how many alley-oops on which the two connected. Yet, as good as Mullens' hands are in grabbing a lob out of the air, he's still a wholly unimpressive rebounder. He's also a poor defender. He's not strong enough to guard big men on the block and his feet aren't quick enough in reacting on pick and rolls. Augustin was wheelin' and dealin' as a distributor, but didn't become aggressive in finding his own shot until the second half. Still, I can't be mad at 13 assists and two turnovers. Gerald Henderson and Boris Diaw were both practically invisible. Diaw's stat line suggests otherwise, but he really wasn't good tonight on either side of the court. He never found his shot (nor did he make a truly concerted effort) and struggled maneuvering in the paint.

At least the rookies both turned on their 'Don't Play Like Utter Poop' switch and gave me something to like about tonight. Now if only some of the other guys would turn on that switch, too.

You know you suck when

Losing Maggette to an injury means you are no longer competitive against anyone (We are 0-6 since his injury and 4 of them were disasters). This team desperately needs a leader who isn’t afraid to call some guys out. I’m not sure who that would be though.

Who should get called out?

The team needs to get told they stink? That should be obvious, because they do. Feeling bad about it won’t change that fact.

Wow good call on BB focus

The guy clearly sucks with 5 blocks, I was stupid for calling him a great defensive player
And you too MP for getting it right with Kemba, the dude just outplayed the PG he was picked after in pretty much every category with significantly less miniutes gosh Kemba is terrible
Good calls you 2

5 blocks, and what else?

If you can’t score, and they’re still scoring, blocks are nothing but fancy bows. Knight was the better player for contributing to the team that DID the blowing out, not the other way around.

Knight was starting and playing PG with 35 miniutes

Kemba was playing SG mostly with only 22 and Knight only had 5 assists which was just 3 more. And really your going to knock a guy who had 5 blocks in 12 miniutes and only took 3 shots? Wow thats pretty sad they both proved you wrong tonight stop acting like a bith and suck it up and admit they had a good game but I doubt your man enough. Its pretty sad they both had great games and your not even happy you actually seem upset, it just shows you are not a fan.

Your not man enough to admit they had a good game. I dont expect you to say you were wrong but I thought maybe you were good enough to say they were good tonight. And you are clearly not happy that they had a good game because your acting upset and still saying they suck, thats not being a fan.

Right now here’s what I’m seeing: Michael makes valid points. Sure, they’re not optimistic, but that’s his opinion on the players in question, no fault in that. I also see you making an argument, which then devolves into namecalling (“bith”, calling his manhood into question) and questioning Michael as a fan. So he doesn’t share the same opinion as you on these players. You may have to face facts that neither of you are able to compromise on these tenets, and move on.

Look, I’ve been there. Michael and I have had our verbal scuffles in the past. I’ve acted rashly and argued with him, probably writing my own personal attacks. It didn’t take me long afterwards to realize how childish and rashly I acted. Writing something emotional in the moment may feel good initially, but trust me, it doesn’t amount to anything.

I was very impressed by several of Biyombo's blocks.

But one tool does not make you an NBA player. See: Carroll, Matt (three-point shooting), or Bradley, Shawn (height), or McGuire, Dominic (ability to play the right way.) And you quoting Walker’s superior stats will not convince me that he had the superior game. Knight had an efficient, turnover-free night and orchestrated an offense which blew out a Bobcats team with very similar talent. He also led Detroit with ten rebounds, which is a rather curious statistic for you to overlook given the guy’s size and position.

Personal attacks are the weapon of the ignorant.

Walker was 6-8 thats plenty efficient

Knight was the starter why should Kemba being the backup have to lead the team to a wi, if you wanna blame someone for that blame DJ. The dude had a great game I dont know why you cant just admit that he had a good game are you that scared to admit something? And everyone has been talking about how good a rebounder Kemba is for his size just because he didnt do it tonight doesnt mean anyything. And you havent given BB time to develop anything else.

by TS BOBCAT on Jan 14, 2012 12:30 AM EST up reply actions

Walker sits below 3 RPG for the year.

That’s hardly good, and stretches far further back than this game. And I don’t need to give Biyombo time to develop. That time was supposed to be before he got drafted and became a multi-millionaire for his supposed ability to play basketball. Frankly, I think we would have been FAR better served leaving him over in Spain, as the Raps are doing with Valanciunas, and as the Spurs have done multiple times to good effect. But his level of NBA readiness is just another reason in a long line as to why a team in the state of the Bobcats should have had no business selecting him as high as #7 period, much less trading away valuable assets to do so.

Personal attacks are the weapon of the ignorant.

I also like how now your only talking about how he cant rebound which is irrelevant for a PG. And rookie dont need time to develop? Really? even LeBron and Kobe and Carmelo needed to develop and hell LeBron is still developing he is just not able to be effective in the post. That was an idiotic statement every player needs time to develop no player is at there ceiling their first year. And you act like it was a stretch to draft him when he was not going to make it out of the lottery.

by TS BOBCAT on Jan 14, 2012 12:48 AM EST up reply actions

If a guy is "not going to make it out of the lottery"...

He’s going to be picked by #14. That is NOT a justification to trade up and draft him at #7. And at no point did I say that players don’t develop; however, if a player has not developed to the point that he can get on the floor, he probably shouldn’t be drafted at seven.

Thats the coaches fault not

Do you realize how hard it is just to get one block. You act like blocks are something everyone can do and it is easy it is an amazing skill to have it takes timing and good hands and being smart about it because you have to time your jump just right and make sure you have all ball. The 18 year old had 5 in 12 miniutes last night, he has a foundation of which to build on. He is 12 games in and had no off season you have no reason to say he has no potential or is a bad player you are wrong on every level. Who cares where he was drafted dont blame him for that blame Cho he is exceeding expectations that we had for him if you will stop blaming him for where he was drafted and just let him be him.

Andrew Bynum was selected 10th by the Lakers

Pretty much put up the same stat line as Biyombo. In 7.3 minutes a game he averaged 1.6 pts, 1.7 rebs, 0.5 blks, and 40.2% FG compared to Biyombo’s 11.6 mins, 2.0 pts, 2.8 rebs, 1.4 blks and 35.7% FG%.

You're off dude.

The 2005-2006 Lakers (Bynum’s Rookie Year) won only 45 games while starting Chris Mihm at center. They were knocked out in the first round. They were a bad team that year, and had no talent in the front court. We have a better front court this year than the Lakers did.

Not to mention the fact that almost nobody gets big minutes in Europe when they're 20 or younger

They prefer to play rugged old dudes, even if the young guy behind him is clearly more talented. That’s just the way it is. Brandon Jennings went over there and didn’t play at all, and almost every guy drafted out of Europe wasn’t playing big minutes. Anybody that uses Biyombo’s playing time in Europe as an argument that he doesn’t belong in the NBA simply doesn’t understand. The fact that Biyombo still ended up as a league leader in blocks under those conditions is extremely impressive.

Our research has revealed some slightly different information. Coaches who have worked with Biyombo earlier in his career while he was still in Congo think he’s "no older than 20 at most," while Biyombo’s agent, Igor Crespo, has evidence that proves Biyombo is even younger.
Crespo says he took Biyombo to a specialist to conduct a bone age study immediately upon his arrival in Spain (Biyombo was reportedly 16). The study, as explained here involves taking x-rays of an adolescent’s wrist and hand to see if his growth plates are still open. Because the cartilage in Biyombo’s hand hadn’t fused at that point, the specialist came to the conclusion that he could be 16 or 17 at most, but not 18, when growth plates are expected to be closed.

We got him for his rebounding and his defense. He’s showing great strides in those areas. I understand you don’t like the fact that he can’t play offense and is still a work in progress, but we’re aiming for upside over present-day performance. We could have taken someone who was more ready with the #7 pick. Where would that have gotten us this season? Maybe a couple extra wins. If he pans out like me and lots of other people think he will, we’ll have a hell of a player right when our rebuilding process is finishing up. I’m not talking about this season. I’m talking about this season AND the future. We can be confident that MarShon Brooks is going to be a productive NBA player throughout his career, because he’s already doing it. We have no idea whatsoever whether Biyombo can do that, because he’s shown no signs of being able to produce at a competent NBA level in anything other than shotblocking, which is not enough to play him more than situationally.

Ha...

If they were dumb enough to buy in with any expectation of being competitive, I think that’s on them. To be fair, though, I think they were basically selling seats on season deals at a basically 50% discount, which is pretty unheard of. Darren Rovell noted how unusual it was.

I was also talking about the original pricing, but these kinds of deals (like the $5 uppers) have been happening for several seasons now because they’re simply that desperate to fill seats.

I have 2 lowers this year

And they did provide free parking and $20 in concessions every game. That is a pretty sweet deal. To be a STH for this team, you have to just enjoy watching basketball, watching players develop, and like the atmosphere of being in the arena. I love it, much better than sitting on the couch every night.

i just don’t think it’s fair if you bought season tickets for, let’s say $1000 and all of a sudden the team is now selling those tickets for $500.

are the $20 in concessions / free parking for every game some of the givebacks, or just general perks for the season? and by 2 lowers do you mean they lowered the price for you?

Diminishing value is a risk to being a STH

At the same time, I’m paying 30% of what most fans are paying for the prime games too so the good comes with the bad. The concession/parking were perks for renewing by a certain deadline. And “lowers” refers to 2 seats in the lower level.

yeah, pineda has more control now than cc did then..perhaps even now

Pineda had 2.9 BB/9 and 9.1 K/9 in his first season

It wasn’t until Sabathia’s 5th season that he got below 2.9 BB/9 and has never had a k/9 above 9 in his career.

Admittedly Pineda was pitching in the weak AL West, but it’s not like CC was pitching against anyone better in a mediocre AL Central

Draft

I am wondering who the Bobcats should try to get as a draft pick. A friend of mine was saying this was a good draft to have multiple picks in. The Nuggets are showing that you don’t necessarily need all stars but loads of draft picks. I hope they don’t draft Sullinger because he will be an undersized PF with weight problems. I saw one mock draft and they had us getting Andre Drummond, the center for Connecticut. I heard that he is a center that likes to shoot from the perimeter instead of going in the low post which we have with Mullens already. Harrison Barnes could be a Carmelo Anthony type or a Rudy Gay type. Who should we draft?

Go for highest ceiling, he can be good but Anthony Davis , Jeremy Lamb, Sullinger or Drummond are better choices

I never thought I'd say this before the season started...

Byron Mullens is my favorite Bobcats player to watch. He leads our team in Hollinger’s PER rankings. Best surprise I’ve witnessed for this team since Wallace began to blossom as our eventual first all-star.

Bench Diaw, start White, and I swear our starting five will start to care again. I wrote this towards the end of the game thread, but that Que Sara Sara demeanor of his is rubbing off on the players with whom he shares time on the court. Minimize his damage, and assign him to the end of the bench…at least until the 01/24/12. If he pouts, so what? What’s he going to do, score in the other team’s basket?

Look, we need scoring. Diop was given a try as the starter for a hot second, but Mullens is a million times better as a scorer, so Silas (wisely) pulled the trigger. D-Dub was becoming a virtual double-double lock as a starter. What am I missing here?

By the way, the next three highest Bobcats on the PER list is Augustin, Walker, and…

(Diaw is 5th on our team, for those who were wondering)

The start of the games put the cats in the hole for good. SILAS, U MUST PUT A DEFENSIVE TEAM ON THE CT FIRST!!!

Tyreese thomas cannot play def or offensive sf and he kills the start. Go back to brown at sf. Just get him some easy buckets like dj did w mullens last nite. The key to dominance in the paint was the great passing of the center in the middle of the pistons offense. He , monroe hit cutters to the basket. A cutter has never been hit ever on the cats team going to the basket or a cutter going bak door. EVER!!!!

The zone was poor in rotating. They must identify n target n overplay the hooters on the one. Conider half ct traps and three qtr presses or at least full ct on the ball pressure to slow up these teams .

Dj was tremendous in getn assists in the paint . The only problem was he didnt distribute to anyone but mullens. Even tho , these were passes on the break and in half ct sets .. He must keep this up if only to showcase him. Mj aint gunna resign him w kemba here. He will be in great demand, he can play n score on a top team who will pay him way more than what mj will.

Dj wants to make the allstar team if hes on the ballot … His time is being cut into by kemba.. He will continue to shoot first and pass in the paint 2nd unlike last nite unfortunately. kemba must play under control and not force as he id last nite. He tried to pass too whc was good.

Its the defense in the paint whc is weaker than weak. Mullens, as good as he is shud not start if he cant stop anyone whc he hasnt done yet. Hes taken off the dribble at will.THIS IS THE REASON UR STARTERS HAVE QUIT SILAS AND MJ.

PUT A DEFENSIVE TEAM OUT THERE, AT LEAST AT FIRST. THAT MEANS ,DJ, HENDERSON,BROWN,DIAW AND NOT MULLENS … STOP THE OFFENSIVE STAGNANCY AND HIT CUTTERS FOR EASY BUCKETS. THE POST HERE THAT SAID MJ WANTS TO LOSE BY LESS THAN FOUR PTS IS CORRECT .. BLOWOUTS WILL CAUSE A BACKLASH W IRREVERSIBLE CONSEQUENCES.

by Louis tape on Jan 14, 2012 6:12 AM EST reply actions

I agree with Louis

Tyrus makes the starting team worse because his play is erratic. He cannot defend, he doesn’t know how to avoid the picks, he doesn’t sewitch or pick up on defense at the right times, he doesn’t know how to cut without the ball or move to the open spaces on the court when the ball isn’t in his hands,, he can’t defend anyone in the post because not only is he physically weak, but he plays weak and dumb, he can’t make a move and go to the basket because he jus doesn’t know the fundamentals to the game.

When we had Maggette or Brown out there at least the team looked professional and they kept games close, even winnng some games, but with Tyrus we look like crap, and I’ve noticed this since Silas has been there. Tyrus has really regressed, it’s not Silas fault per se, it’s just the fact that Tyrus came into the league raw and has had 5 or 6 different coaches in his 6 seasons. He needs the D league more than Bitombo at this point.

Mullens is my favorite Bobcat right now, the way this guy enters the games and just shoots away with supreme confidence is impressive (probably because he has a nice shot). Mullens is another guy who cold use a big man coach to teach him the inside game, Mullens has decent athleticism for his size, he should rebound and play defense alot better than he does. He just needs to play like…..a convict, he needs to toughen up, fight for every rebound and not play so weak against opposing teams.

Kemba is starting to wear on me, he’s a player with heart and he clearly doesn’t like losing. Again, he’s a very small guy, and basketball is a big mans game. If we want Kemba to be our guy, it’s almost time to start him because he’s gonna need to get the experience and learn how to play against the bigger players in the league at some point and we need to see if this guy is for real or not. The way this team is going, we are lottery bound anyway, let Kemba get his minutes.

Biyombo is the same way, he should be the first big coming off the bench, if Boris is such a headache for Silas, bench him, White was one of our best players at the PF, but this guy Biyombo should be out there playing too. One thing we know about Biyombo is he’s not scared of anybody and all he knows is no easy shots inside. He wants to learn, he wants to play, he isn’t gonna argue with the coach about what he can do or where he wants to play, let this guy get minutes so he can learn the game.

Never thought I would be one of these folks but...

It’s time for Jordan to sell this team. He treats it like a hobby and that’s why they are a joke right now.
Again, no accountability from anyone. Silas just mopes and fails miserabley, but blames the players. His whole coaching staff is useless. He makes the most ridiculous line-up decisions, constantly putting players in the game out of position, not punishing missed shots and turnovers, starting players who are inefficient, not making halftime adjustments, taking players out the game who are hot, keeping cold players in for long stretches, etc, etc.
I thought Kemba was brought in to be the leader, to give them a winning attitude, to provide a spark, to bring excitement to this team. Where is all of that? Again, he will never be effective coming off the bench. I really hate Silas at this point, he is literally the NBA version of last years John Fox. Jordan, please step in and make this guy give the rookies more minutes.

DWG I disagree with Silas

I don’t think thihs is wrong how he’s handled Kemba. Kemba was the 9th pick in the draft, he’s drafted to play a position he wasn’t really groomed to play. DJ is another young player we drafted for the same position and in training camp DJ was just the safer more logical pick to start for the team. Silas is trying to get Kemba minutes, even playing that small lineup of Kemba and DJ together just so the rookie can play. By all accounts DJ came into the season focused and playing his heart out because he wants his job, you can’t just take it from him and give his job to someone who’s unproven. Kyrie Irving didn’t start, Rubio still doesn’t start, and these guys were drafted a bit higher and are clearly the better players. Besides DJ was playing really good ball for us. Just relax, I think Kemba is gonna get more and more minutes and may even be the starter before the season ends.

What are you talking about with Walker?

He was drafted to play point guard, the position he played for the majority of his college career, and the position he MUST play to be a successful NBA player. And P.S.: Irving has started every game he’s played in, and Rubio is now starting, with Ridnour moving to the off-guard spot. Funny, how you can play a PG at the two when he’s not 5’9" (love for my 5’9" homies, though.)

Anthony Davis

Anthony Davis is a PF and we have glutton of PF ‘s on the team. We need a center, small forward and Shooting guard. Unless we plan on unloading some of our PF’s on another team.

We need to draft the best player available.

Right now, it appears Anthony Davis is the best player available. Tyrus Thomas is our best
PF, and he’s not exactly lighting the world on fire this year.

Yeah, but Bismack Biyombo's a PF, and he=Hakeem Olajuwon, Hall of Famer!

Haven’t you heard?

Nobody said he will be a HOF

You can put words in are mouth I guess but no thats not the truth. We just beleive he can be good if he gets the time.

Boris and Eddie will be gone next year

And we could easily transition him C if we wanted too. And like FTW said we need to take BPA unless its a PG in my opinion.

Yeah, but we were so mediocre when those guys were here!

Don’t you realize this is better?

Hell, with as good as I hear he is, I'd be glad to have the FIRST one!
