Hawks Run Bobcats Out Of Arena (metaphorically), 111-81
Box Score (look at your own risk)
This was a game I could have lived without ever watching. Boy, how it was ugly.
Paul Silas was clearly not ready to give up on The Tyrus Thomas Small Forward Experiment, but I was before this game even started. And then the game started, and I was really ready for it to be over. Thomas guarded Joe Johnson for some reason, and was not very good at it. Atlanta ran Johnson around screens, all of which Thomas tried to run through all gangbusters, but instead just caught up in them. Johnson would have 13 points in the quarter. Meanwhile, the Bobcats failed to execute much of any type of offense. They found room inside to score, but could not get anything outside.
The Hawks didn't get much either from deep, but they earned plenty of extra possessions by destroying the Bobcats on the glass. At halftime, the offensive rebounding tally was Hawks - 12, Bobcats - 2. Boris Diaw guarded Josh Smith poorly, unable to contest Smith's quickness, whether in fighting for rebounds or taking Diaw off the dribble and driving into the paint. Augustin and Henderson played admirably as the starting guards, but just couldn't space the Hawks defense. Tyrus was better as a small forward on offense than I expected, but still isn't a great fit there either. And Diaw? Diaw might as well have not played. He seemed to be completely disinterested in the game at times. He finished with zero points, six rebounds, four assists and two turnovers. At one point, Jeff Teague drove into the paint and jumped through the air to attempt a layup. Boris Diaw was right in front of the rim, in prime position to at least challenge the shot. But he did not jump. He did not even raise his arms. On the ensuing timeout, Paul Silas was seen chewing out Diaw. Moving on...
Byron Mullens started tonight. Yes, I started a whole new paragraph for Mullens. He wasn't outstanding, but scored well with 21 points on 16 shots. His rebounding still leaves much room for improvement, as does his defense. Still, better than starting Diop, in my book. He was a good option on pick and rolls when the defending big man got back to prepare for a driving guard as the defending guard got held up on the pick. When the passes come in those situations, Mullens is always a threat to knock them down. So, good game Byron. Better than most of the rest of the team.
The second half was also quite bleak. The Bobcats' deficit grew greater and greater, as the Bobcats' offense sputtered while the Hawks continued to maul Charlotte on the offensive boards.
The rookies were frustratingly inconsistent. Kemba hit two shots and some nice passes, some of which the shooters couldn't knock down despite how open they were. Biyombo was benched early after two early fouls (why not let him try to play through it?) and wouldn't return until the game was well out of hand. And even then, he didn't play very well. He had some rebounds but still looks a little uncomfortable. I do have to remind myself that he didn't have any time with the team before the season, and that this team is still meshing. Still, it's not a good roster.
Speaking of rookies, I almost forgot about Cory Higgins, who scored six points off some nice backdoor cuts.
Other than that, I really don't have much to say about this game. It was ugly. It had bad lineups. It had poorly-executed offense. It had abominable rebounding (OREBs Hawks - 20, Bobcats - 4) -- without Al Horford. The Hawks outperformed the Bobcats in every category, except for blocks. Atlanta had 12 more field goal attempts than the Bobcats, and hit a higher percentage. The only Bobcats' three-pointer came from Kemba Walker with 9 minutes left.
"We've given up. I don't know what to say," Paul Silas would say after the game.
And on that note, good night everyone. See you tomorrow for Bobcats-Pistons.

silas made no adjustment in 2nd half
this is surely a team with potential.. but i feel like this young team is building some bad habits under silas. there’s no ball movement, there is too much dribbling until someone has to jack up a shot just to avoid a turnover… i dont know what else to say but hopefully this team will turn around..

Yeah I like Silas as a guy.
But its time for him to go.
"With the third pick of the 2006 NBA Draft, the Charlotte Bobcats select, Adam Morrison, Gonzaga."
yeah, and the team is really built for speed
yet i haven’t seen them really take advantage of this. having kemba, augustin, hendo, and mullens all being able to move pretty quickly is a huge advantage and should lead to some fast break points (anyone see the clippers game last night? it felt like the entirety of the scoring came on the fast break). yet consistently they play slow, half court offense that does not benefit this roster.
Boone Logan is a good boy. So is David Robertson. Team A.J.
They're actually playing significantly faster than last year.
Some of that has to do with Brown’s portion of the year, but numbers are numbers.

Going into tonight’s game, they were 18th in the league in fast-break scoring. That’s an improvement from their #24 ranking last year. They often have to play a half-court game because their defense isn’t good enough to force turnovers (23rd in the league) or make the other team miss many shots (25th in the league in FG%.)

We should be better than 18th
An improvement of six spots is not good enough. The team can’t play defense anyway – why not push the ball all game long?

i see your point in that regard
but i think there’s potential for great improvement on those possessions in which we do get the ball off a rebound or missed shot or block or steal.

Diaw and Diop were the only two players who didn't score.
Diaw had six rebounds and 4 assists. And 1 block. And 2 turnovers…and
points.

Silas, for all I love about him, did one incredibly poor thing tonight.
He did not put Tyrus Thomas on Josh Smith. He did not play Tyrus Thomas substantial minutes at PF. Josh Smith is the ideal guy for TT to guard, not Joe Johnson. In fact, the guy guarding Josh Smith, Boris Diaw, while not an ideal defender for Joe Johnson would have been better than TT.
Silas should already know TT needs to live at PF if we’re ever going to see any progress from our young PF, and if that means taking minutes away from an incredibly uninspiring (of late) Boris Diaw, he needs to do it. I hope he figures it out, for his sake, and my sanity.

i'm curious to see how the season unfolds
for obvious reasons (i hope) we are playing the guys that aren’t part of the long term plan. but what about silas? is he just a pawn that is being sacrificed during the overhaul? he has to see this coming. despite the mission to suck the entire season, he isn’t doing much to keep his job. i see the raw physical talent in kemba, but it’s hard to blame him for his poor showing as of late when there isn’t a coach telling him how to play the position effectively instead of giving him a green light to shoot any chance he gets.

Silas had to know this was coming.
He enjoys the game, he enjoys coaching, and he enjoys the area. But it’s not like any of this should have taken him by surprise. And he’s got too much integrity to walk away. I don’t think he’ll get fired; that would be a classless move on Jordan’s fault. And if the players don’t listen, it doesn’t matter how good a coach is. Do you think Silas is encouraging Walker to take contested shots and drive against multiple defenders nearly every time he touches the ball? I doubt it. But it’s not a video game. Once the tip happens, Silas (and every other coach) is at the mercy of his players’ execution.

Yeah but Silas is likely not telling him NOT to take contested shots
Silas is telling everyone they’ll be on the bench if they give up a shot. Combine that with Walker who’s won championships by scoring at every opportunity, and this is the result.

the game
I wanted to scream about why Silas left Diaw in the game so long because he should have benched him early in the 3rd quarter and played Biyombo because at least he rebounded and played defense. He scored more than Diaw. I liked that dribble and dunk by Derek Brown. He needs to work on doing that more like a real small forward.I like that Higgins got a chance and he played pretty good, and hopefully he gets more opportunities.

Some stats like only our Bobcats can have...
Tyrus Thomas: 0 rebounds in 26 minutes.
Boris Diaw: 0 points in 26 minutes.
DJ Augustin: 0 FT attempts in 26 minutes.
(real crazy…we are 11 games in and Boris has made 1 FT. Yeah. Missed 1 too.)
How are these even possible? Wouldn’t you almost accidentally get 1 board….or just 1 bucket/tip-in/put-back….or 1 trip to the line?? A tech FT or something? Isn’t he the little guy driving to the rack all the time and ending up on his ass?? Or is that Kemba? Dammit. I’m confused. Only got to watch the first half of this one. See ya’ll for Dee-twah!

Way to give Silas a free pass Procto.
Silas and his staff take no accountability for anything. They have tired, outdated strategies, make no second half adjustments, allow poor substitutions, AND when they miss shots, Silas just slaps them on the back and says, “We’ll get em next time!”
No one teaches the forwards how to be a forward. No one takes the time to educate them on boxing out, pick and rolls, the basic fundamentals of basketball. Everyone is a shooting guard on this team. And Silas just goes through the motions, no punishment, no adjustments, nothing.
Why is it that now all of a sudden the players have “given up?” Maybe they are trying to tell you something Silas. Everyone knew he was not the long term answer, but once again, MJ made a bonehead, hasty move in bringing him here.
This team isn’t even fun to watch when they lose. How boring.
"You ain't supposed to be smiling and giggling after we lose. I've never had the mentality of losing in my whole life and for a person to tell me you can't win them all, that's a loser's mentality." - Cam Newton
you're right
Silas is part of the problem. I don’t even bother replying to MP but it’s obvious coaching is a major factor in winning and developing players. I have not seen either. No adjustments, no heart, it all starts from above.

I dont blame Silas at all
Look at the players on the floor. Then look at their strengths (for the record, not made up strengths or what we THINK they can do. But REAL strengths)…our team is a trainwreck. The players dont match. They wouldnt even match if we had someone like Durant or Lebron. We’d still probably suck. Now look at Cleveland or the Wolves. One allstar caliber player would push them into the playoffs if they kept their main pieces. We dont even have a potential allstar on our team. Maybe Mullens (strange huh). Its nothing really that he can do. He can hope they play a certain way but our roster is a clusterfuck of players that shouldve spent time in the d-league at some point in their career other than DJ and Diaw. Not to mention the uncertainty of the players on our roster as far as their futures…My boy Cho should be making a move any day now bc DJ’s value may not decrease before the deadline but it damn sho aint gon get any higher. Neither is Diaw’s. Our team is uncoachable in my opinion. I cant blame it on Silas…
When is Silas supposed to teach anything?
There was pretty much no offseason before the season. And since the season started, we’ve had a total 6 days off.
And if a player misses a shot, I would hope the coach slaps the on the back and says “we’ll get em next time!” provided it was good shot selection. Reaming on players for missing good looks only makes the problem worse. Shooting is confidence as much anything. If you make your players start second guessing themselves when they get an open look, the shooting problem will only get worse.
by JDeLong42 on Jan 13, 2012 4:29 PM EST up reply actions 1 recs
Yes, you're right.
Silas, one of the NBA’s all-time rebounders in terms of raw skill, has probably not said one word to the team about boxing out or taught them how to play the pick and roll. It’s not fun to watch a team with no talent on the floor, regardless of the coach. Look at how many players we regularly put on the court who wouldn’t even see the floor on most NBA teams: Brown, Biyombo, Diop, Carroll, Higgins. I mean, we’re a worse team because Eduardo Najera is out. Consider that.

Who gave up ..silas or the starters.. Silas and his staff never put another defender on joe johson when it was clear from the first minute thomas ,a pf was way too slow to check a two gd running thru piks. He had brown or henderson who looked like he was defending a sf .
Who never adjusted to taking a slow diaw off josh smith all game . Thonas shuda been on smith or go zone to slow both down at least to give them another look.
Who quit by keeping diaw in the game after the first qtr it was clear he wasnt going to play . As he took no shots ,played no defense and worse failed to block out to stop the onslaught of offensive rebounds by the hawks.
And who has quit by leting kemba come in nite after nite and shoot , take firced shots on the perimeter or layups wo ever passing the ball to his teamates as a pt gd must do first n foremost.
Who has quit by never ever ever running the most basic fundamental plays in basketball on any level whc include, back doors, bak piks, alley oops , three passes then hiting the man moving to the baket.double piks to free the hot man. A WORKABLE PIK N ROLL.!!??? And Hitting the man cutting to the basket going thru .OR RUNNING A FASTBREAK W O THE BALL BEING DRIBBLED UP CT BY THE PT GDS WHO MORE OFTEN THAN NOT TRY TO FINISH THEMSELVES!!!
Whos quit by never ever demanding the shoot first pt gds create easy buckets in the paint for teamates and stop forcing shots and protect the ball from turnovers whc wud kep the cats in any game .
Whos really quit. Its not just diaw. Mullens is a great addittion but hes slow on defense and cant rebound n weak . Protect him in a zone. Protect thomas in a zone if u insist that he play sf instead of brown. Brown cud play if u get him buckets in the paint. Sit diaw if hes not going to play..
I just kinda feel
like Silas is being forced to play certain players. I feel like he isnt in the driver’s seat at all.
1. He didnt get a say on the draft picks that he endorsed
2. He clearly said “Tyrus has to earn his spot”…next game Tyrus started and PLAYED longer than a very productive DJ White
3. The Diaw “point-center” idea just doesnt seem like a Silas idea. More like “you have to play Diaw”
4. Tyrus at SF (see #3)
If letting Walker do what you describe counts as quitting...
He’s never going to produce. His entire game is getting the ball and trying to put the ball in the basket regardless of anything happening on the floor, and that doesn’t seem to be changing much.

DJ, Kemba, and Hendo are the only ones who run on fast breaks!
No one crashes the boards!
No one guards the 3 point shooters!
The Players (Starters specifically) have tuned out Silas. I know we’re suppose to be re-building but this is rediculous!! Last year when the Bobcats got blown out and weren’t showing effort, the Coach got fired…just sayin’
That team was also a million times better, and the coach himself admitted that HE was the one who had checked out.

Holy Crap
Are we really starting the fire Silas bandwagon already? Really?
Last night was painful to watch, yes. There’s no flow on offense, and guys just stand around under the boards (*cough*Diaw*cough*). But let’s have a little perspective, people. Now I’m as optimistic as anyone, and am on record as believing in the possiblity of and cheering for a playoff berth this year. I’m paying for League Pass to watch them every night. But let’s be honest – all of us pegged this group before the season as most likely a lottery team, and a high one at that. So what’s happened? Three weeks into the season, we look exactly like a high lottery team.
OH NOEZ! OMG! FIER DA COACH!
I don’t get it. I really don’t.
This site has gotten out of control lately
I mean, we all saw this season being a disaster, right? Is it really shocking folks?
To be fair, I think you can take the “given up” comment 2 ways. 1) The team has quit on their coach and isn’t listening, or 2) The team is demoralized with losses and just seems defeated.
I think he was talking about #2, which is ultimately workable. This team just needs a few things to break their way and get a win or two. That might not happen until we get a few guys back from injury though.

Most people predict we’re going to lose a ton and when we do, they flip. Everybody is so shortsighted and impatient and it makes me want to reach through my screen and slap them across the face.
Look at OKC, the team we’re hoping to emulate. Just three years ago they were 23-59. A couple good drafts and now look at them. That could be us in a few years. We just have to be patient.
We just have to draft Durant

I think Silas has done a good job in some areas
and poorly in other areas. I think he’s the one that has given up on this team. The Bobcats don’t have alot of talent, but this is a young team and it should be fun to teach the young guys how to play the right way, hell Silas wasn’t doing anything before he was hired anyways, so go with it and have fun. Instead, the one player they’ve invested money in, shows up severely underweight and in no shape to do his job, we want to tank, but refuse to let the rookies get the burn needed to gain valuable experience, and Silas seems to have issues with Diaw when he’s been fat, slow and lazy his whole career (damn near).
Tyrus needs protein shakes, weights, and 1hr lessons on how to be a fundamental big man, stop this SF crap, you can’t learn another job when you don’t even know your own job properly. DJ should probably be traded, it makes no sense to have to PG’s under 6’0. Mullens is the only real bright spot for this team, we all knew this team would suck before the season started, so let’s suck at least having fun …….

I think they update only every few weeks or so.
At least that’s how MLB 2k10 and 2k11 worked.
Boone Logan is a good boy. So is David Robertson. Team A.J.
It updates injuries and stuff
I don’t know why they haven’t been editing player ratings like they did last year.
For those on the fire Silas tilt
Who do you replace him with?

The only good reason to fire a coach mid-season is to give an interim a shot
Stephen is the only logical interim, and he’s not going to do it after MJ just fired his Dad.
Our only move at this point is to ride this out, and re-group next year with a new staff and hopefully the 1st overall draft pick.

If We ended up with the first pick
I’d trade down to try to get 2 or lottery picks or 1 high lottery pick and 2 mid teen picks…our team sucks and we def need to fill more than one hole. And this is the draft to do it. Hell, I’d trade the first to whatever team is willing to take Maggette or Tyrus give us something useful back and a later lottery pick…
yeah
This team needs to be blown up. Tyrus is such a waste of money, as is Maggette. Trade Augustin (and Diaw, if anyone really wants him). Have Diop clean toilets at the TWC Arena – that’d be more helpful to the team than what he’s currently doing. Convince MJ to lace up – guarantee he’d be better than some of the players on the roster.

It would depend on the situation
If a guy is there on the draft board that might be “the guy”, we have to take him. Otherwise, picking up multiple picks and unloading someone isn’t a bad idea. We’ll have to see how hight we end up picking.

This isn't the NFL where you can just fill holes anywhere in the first couple rounds
You have to find a star, and that’s most likely at the very top. Putting pieces around that player is easier than finding that player… No way we trade back. We’d just wind up with another Biyombo.

You mean the future greatest defensive player in history and Hall of Famer?
What’s wrong with that?
Personal attacks are the weapon of the ignorant.
