Bismack Biyombo and Kemba Walker Highlights & Analysis from Jimmer's Exhibition Game
I was unable to catch the game, but a fine fellow sent me the links to these videos, one short highlight reel for each player from Jimmer Fredette's rookie exhibition game from a couple weeks back.
First up is Biyombo's:
Bismack Biyombo Highlights from Jimmer's All-Star Game (via lockouthoops)
Play No. 1: Biyombo receives the ball as he posts up on the left block. Guarding him is the rebounding and dunk monster, Kenneth Faried. Biyombo is strong enough to force his way deep in the paint. He takes one power dribble towards his right, drawing a second defender coming from behind Faried. Biyombo fakes, draws both defenders into the air, pivots back around and gets a nice roll on a short hook shot. Not bad. His footwork could use some improvement and though his touch looked nice, that shot was pretty short. Still, this looks like it wasn't some pickup game with no defense. Nicely done.
Play No. 2: NOMNOMNOM BISMACK EATS ALL YOUR ILL-CONCEIVED LAYUPS.
Play No. 3: Just look how strong he is on this post-up. He is practically under the net, holding off Faried with ease. Biyombo catches the entry pass, turns, dunk. Cake.
Play No. 4: Excellent timing and help defense to rush over and nick the layup of the driving opponent. Crazy length on display here.
Play No. 5: Meet me at the summit. Effectively guarding two opponents, Biyombo halts a well-run give-n-go play by swatting Faried's attempt at the rim.
Hit the jump for Kemba's video and analysis
Kemba Walker Highlights from Jimmer's All-Star Game (via lockouthoops)
Play No. 1: Leading a 3 on 2 fastbreak, Kemba drives and catches Jimmer with a fake behind-the-back pass. Fredette is now beaten by Walker, who lays the ball up high off the glass, well above Jimmer's outreached grasp.
Play No. 2: Granted, most of these Kemba highlights come against Jimmer, defensive un-extraordinaire. Anyway, Kemba flies right past Señor Slowfoot to find a lane to the hoop as Faried struggles to fight through Biyombo to challenge the shot. Once again, high off the glass.
Play No. 3: Perhaps one of the easiest ankle-breaking moves ever. The simplest of crossovers and Jimmer skids five feet away. He tries to recover but Kemba has already put up the shot that will find the net.
Play No. 4: This is something that concerns me. Don't get me wrong, he did score, which is good. Running a pick and roll with Biyombo, Walker draws both Fredette and Chris Singleton while Biyombo streaks down a freeway untouched. Instead of laying up what could have been an easy alley-oop over the single defender, he takes it himself. It has been noted that Walker, though a fine passer in pick-and-roll situations, just doesn't do it enough, as Sebastian Pruiti wrote in his scouting report of Kemba.
Plays No. 5 & 6: Both are three-pointers, the latter of which was in transition.
Play No. 7: Here Kemba plays with Jimmer on some crossovers and when he takes it to the hole, he can't finish the tough angle floater.
Play No. 8: Not too much of note here. Kemba loses Jimmer once again and proceeds to catch Faried somewhat off-guard with a driving layup.
Of course each player has much room for improvement. They're rookies. They're not even that much yet; they're still draft picks, practically. I hope you enjoyed seeing a rare glimpse of the team's rookies as much as I did, and as a reminder, please don't read too much into this if you're looking for indicators of future NBA success.

I love Kemba's reaction on the last Biyombo highlight
Just like oh man this is great. Can’t wait to see this in Charlotte.

As far as Kemba not passing…he will take some reprogramming at PG because of being the primary scorer at UCONN
Overall though, I’ll give them an attaboy…and I also loved Kemba and Biz together at the end of Biz’s clip

We acctually drafted not one but TWO solid rookies and their is a damn lockout…figures. Can’t wait to see the Coming to America tour with Kemba and Biyambo. Two nice YOUNG pieces added to our roster. I loved Wallace and Jack but i like our building blocks in young players and more important positions. PG and C. We got everything but a SF. Maggatte will suffice until we can draft a young stud in 2012..after then watch out.

If we tank and get a bonafide star talent with the #1-2 pick next season
we should still suck in 2012, but it’ll be the Kevin Durant suck where we’re totally excited. That assuming that a) there will be a bonafide star talent in the draft next year and b) there will actually be a NBA season this year.

Yeah but we have a good chance of being a Thunder esk team in the future with our new Gm and his drafting history. We can’t waist picks anymore and this draft proves we wont. With the right moves we can be a team to contend with in 2-3 years depending on 1)if guys pan out and 2) how quick it comes together.
A lot of similarities between the Panthers and Bobcats atm. We got some nice pegs atm but with the addition of a few here or there in key spots we could develop into something special

That's a difficult argument to make for those two players.
In Thomas’ case, the only limiting factor to his minutes has been his own health and attitude. It’s not like he’s been buried on the bench behind older or better players. He’s also been far more injury-prone, averaging just 62 games a year despite rarely being a starter.

I'm not saying Thomas has been the player Okafor has throughout his career
I’m saying you can’t dismiss him outright as “not a long-term solution” when he’s clearly shown significant value.

I made the same commentary about Nazr Mohammed when he came on board.
Ignoring the contract, he had some pretty great per-minute numbers, too, but he was always a player who fell off when asked to carry the load as a regular starter. I don’t see how Thomas can be viewed as anything else.

If you are really suggesting that it is impossible to evaluate a player's abilities without seeing them in an NBA game, you have much to learn about player evaluation.
If that were true, why would scouting reports exist? Why would college careers even be mentioned? Because there are things in players’ physical skillsets and mental tendencies that will absolutely translate regardless of the level of competition. Walker will be fast, NBA, college, or pickup game at the Y. Biyombo will be tall, on the moon, Mars, or in Zebulon. Walker will have to revamp his game to play as a true NBA point guard, because he’s focused for the last three years on getting his shot off and scoring first and foremost. The clunky, awkward post moves Biyombo can use against rail-thin teenagers won’t work against the men of the low post in the NBA. That’s all. I don’t need to wait and see those things are true.
Personal attacks are the weapon of the ignorant.

You really can't say you've seen Biz play
There’s barely any video of him available.
You're speaking some measure of truth when evaluating our two rookies.
I have no problems admitting that both will have to adapt and improve to be successful at the next level. But really, that’s kind of a given. Every rookie comes in to the league with flaws in his game.
Biyombo played against teenagers in the one game that got him national exposure. He played against professional, veteran centers in his pro-league in Spain. He’ll have to adjust to the bigger, stronger, NBA, but let’s not pretend that he’s only played against 16 year olds. He was a pro at an age when most of us were taking world history and algebra classes. We’ve already established that his length and body mass are equivalent to the typical rookie NBA center. There’s no reason to think he’s going to spend his entire career getting tossed around like a rag doll. You’re right, his offense is suspect, but very few people (no reasonable person) would argue with you there. His potential value has always been viewed as a defensive game changer.
Kemba will be asked to play more like a true PG. Yea, but he’ll be asked to score a lot too. That’s a given until this team drafts a true first option scorer.

A lot of people were shooting down the Larry Bird comparison
He was compared to Larry Legend for how he looked as much as how he played. Both were top scorers in college, played the same position, had floppy hair and were white. Larry has had a pretty complete game. Morrison was always known as a scorer and nothing else.
One narrow, half-assed comparison of two white guys is not representitive of a typical talent evaluation.

You're right.
How about another pair of comparisons, this time from draftexpress.
Best Case: Shorter Dirk Nowitzki
Worst Case: Post-prime Glenn Robinson
What was the narrow, half-assed comparison to Robinson, I wonder?
And P.S.: 5.5 RPG from a guy who spent most of his time on the wing is more than solid.

I'm not sure what point you're trying to get at.
You start off by trying to trivialize talent evaluation (by pointing to the Bird/Morrison comp which was widely thought of as total crap), but now it seems like you’re trying to legitimize talent evaluation on sites like draftexpress (draftexpress has a lot of good things to say about Biyombo by the way). I’m not sure what you’re trying to say, but it’s not making sense for me. I’ll leave it to you to clarifiy if you wish.
The whole concept of NBA player comparisons is half-assed if you think about it. It’s a short, easy way to communicate how one person thinks a player will perform. The problem is, all players are different. The Morrison/Robinson comparison makes sense in that they’re both inside/outside scorers who have reps for not playing D. Ok, we can say that about a lot of players. Why not compare him to Rashard McCants?
Player comps are fun to talk about, so I’m not saying we shouldn’t talk about them, but does name dropping the Big Dog really help us understand anything about Morrion’s NBA experience? Even looking at raw production, tell me they are in any way similar. You can probably find some examples of a player comp turning out right, but I’m sure I could find 10 bad comps for every 1 good comp.
What’s the point of all this? Player comps don’t mean a whole lot. DraftExpress does a hell of a lot more work than half-assed player comps.
by Basketball Rambler on Oct 7, 2011 12:26 PM EDT up reply actions
No, I'm saying that no comparison or scouting report really can definitively say anything about a player
The argument made was that we could trust glowing reports of Biyombo because the people who made them “know their stuff.” Just like they “knew” that Alexis Ajinca would have “A clear NBA future” and be “an important player on any team?”
P.S.: That’s your boys from DraftExpress.
Personal attacks are the weapon of the ignorant.

I know its from draftexpress
I read your comment, so I know what it said.
My point is this: pointing to one minute detail from a site like dratexpress and acting like all they do is give bs player comps is not realistic. You’re ignoring the bulk of what sites like that actually do just to spin an argument.
We agree that there is no definitive way to tell how a player turns out.

I'm really rooting for Kemba.
I know a lot of people say he’s too small..he’s not a true point. There will be a learning curve, but I hope he will do really well and adjust. I believe he can. He’s a leader and that is big plus. I’m not sure about Bismack. He will be a Joel Anthony type player. These guys are good for the dirty work, but liabilities on the floor.
Joel Anthony?
Anthony averages 3.3 rebounds a game for his career. Do you really think Biyombo is no better than 3.3 rebounds a game?
The games haven’t been played yet, but look at any film of the guy. Read anything about him. He works too hard and he’s too athletic to expect that he’ll be the next Joel Anthony. He’s nothing special on offense, but that doesn’t mean you automatically compare him to crap players. Defense is half the game, and Biyombo has shown that he can be an excellent defender.

I agree...
…but that’s an argument that I’ve given up on during this lockout

ok..he should be a better J. Anthony type player..
He should get plenty of minutes on the Bobcats and this will help him develop. This team is not the Heatsters. I expect better numbers, but not by a large margin.

Anthony's stats hardly tell his story.
He’s a below-average starter and would probably be better served coming off the bench, but he’s not embarrassing as one. I would not be remotely surprised if Biyombo’s career amounts to a very similar track, and he’d be lucky to match Anthony’s rank as the second-best shotblocker in the league (percentage-wise) in ‘09-’010.

Joel Anthony is about the eighth best player on his current (if good) team.
