Around SBN: Ray Allen Fighting Age, Injury And His New Role

Counting Down the Top 24 Bobcats of All-Time -- #10-6

Primoz Brezketch

Now we're getting to it.

10. Primoz Brezec

Bring on the laughter. Done yet? No? How about now? OK, let's begin. People forget that Primoz was more or less a consistent, competent starting center. Now, he wasn't an exceptional talent, let's not be mistaken. He had nice touch on his jump shot and was a fair rebounder. At 7'2", Brezec had great size but was an average athlete. He was neither extremely strong nor quick, which hurts when you have to match up with centers like Dwight Howard four times a season. It sounds absurd now, but it was not all that surprising to see Brezec put up 20 points on a given night in 2004 or 2005. And he contributed consistently for two full seasons before back injuries played a big part in his dwindling play.

Star-divide

9. Matt Carroll

Mattcarroll_medium

I give Matt all the credit in the world. He was undrafted and drifted off and on NBA teams and in the NBADL. He finally found his niche in the NBA on the Bobcats as a spot-up shooter. Featuring efficient form on his shot, he really rocketed onto the scene towards the end of the 2005-06 season when he received considerable playing time and scored efficiently. The following seasons, he was one the Bobcats' main bench scorers, but a subpar defender. When Larry Brown came into the picture, it wasn't surprising to see his days numbered. But he tried to change his game altogether, and arguably succeeded, which not many players can do. Now he isn't as great of a scorer and his shot isn't as consistent, but he plays hard on defense and drives into the paint more, finishing at the rim with a career-high 54%, according to Hoopdata.

8. D.J. Augustin

Dj_medium

He had a very rocky sophomore season for the Bobcats, but his talent and production cannot be denied. His rookie season was a bright moment for the team, with Augustin averaging about 12 ppg on nearly 44% shooting from downtown. His sophomore season has barely half that and featured a major shooting dip as his field goal percentage dropped to 38.6% and his three-point shooting fell to 39.3% (which is still good!). His confidence looked shaky and having Larry Brown as your coach certainly doesn't help that. But he bounced back, especially with the arrival of Paul Silas letting him take the reigns of the offense. He's not a great playmaker but is a fine passer and has really improved his shooting in the paint (up 13 percentage points from his second season). His major weakness is on defense. Augustin doesn't fight over picks or screens well and his height is a problem since taller guards can shoot over him.

7. Boris Diaw

Diaw_medium

Ever since his first season with the Bobcats, Diaw's time in Charlotte has been scrutinized because of his hefty check and the Rufus on Fire-deemed "nonchalance." To break his game down a bit, Diaw is quite talented as a shooter, passer and defender, though he is not elite at any of those things. He gets too comfy with his own fancy passing and becomes one-dimensional on offense. He also isn't as aggressive as he needs to be to fully be an efficient part of a team. His range is great for a PF and he can also handle the ball, becoming a multi-faceted threat on offense, when he wants. His skills on the block often go unheralded, although he has a nice baby hook and is strong (or heavy?) enough to back down other power forwards. Further, though he is nowhere near athletic to rack up blocks and his feet aren't very quick, he can play effective defense. Remember, arms are not just the only part of your body that defends an opponent. As is Diaw's way, fans question his passion for the game and though I don't quite buy that he lacks passion, I believe he isn't as intense and committed to his all-around game, which would help the team more than the player he falls back on being.

6. Brevin Knight

Brevin_medium

No one in Bobcats history has run a meaner pick and roll. Most point guards throughout the league can't. And he did it with limited talent roll guys. Knight was a precise passer with great court vision. Even though he came to the Bobcats as a 29-year-old, he was still a quick little bugger with fast hands, and also a good defender. He averaged 1.97 steals per game in his three years in Charlotte. Though quite undersized, he could stay in front of just about any opponent with his quickness and create turnovers with his quick hands and reactions. His scoring ability was limited, with poor range on an inconsistent jump shot. But his talent to set teammates up for good scoring opportunities has yet to be overcome in Bobcats history. Knight also had extremely good basketball IQ and a great assist to turnover ratio with 3.69:1 in his three seasons as a Bobcat.

From '04-'06, Knight was consistently one of the better PGs in the NBA.

In ‘04-’05, he ranked 2nd in the league in assists per game, and was 3rd a year later. On some bad offensive teams. He was also ranking 5th and 2nd in steals per game at the same time. Also disappointed Brezec, as a three and a half year starter, is ranked behind Carroll, who’s never been more than a bench player.

Felton never was awful

he wasnt a superstar either. but for a team like Charlotte, Raymond was pretty good. he tried to take on the scoring load, and that’s what messed him up. he was on teams where he had no business trying to be the leading scorer (i mean, that Felton/Wallace/Richardson team could be hellish to play against).
could he have passed the ball a bit more? sure.
could he have created a consistent jumpshot? of course.

but what i saw was a leader doing his best to adapt to every situation thrown at him (3 different coaches in 4 years?) and doing a pretty good job of it knowing he’d never live up to the Chris Paul and Derron Willams talent drafted ahead of him.

ideally, Felton is a poor man’s version of Derron Williams.

Yeah…Felton gets a bum deal for some reason. His numbers his final year werent bad at all. And really the kind of numbers I want from a pg. I dont think every pg is a 12 assist guy and its not what I expected from Felton.

He was a top-five pick.

He is a league-average starter. That’s simply not good enough. He’s no Deron Williams, or even close. He’s Ben Gordon, with a little better passing (not decision-making) ability and a much worse shot.

He's not as good as Felton. Never said he was.

You would expect a #5 pick to be better than a second-rounder, right? But the point remains that that offense drastically inflates statistics well above actual abiltiy.

I'm not sure who would disagree with you on that statement,

I think everyone pretty much knows when you’re playing for D’antoni or Don Nelson or somebody your offense is going to look a lot better than it really is. On the other hand, your defense may also look a lot worse than it really is.

and on another episiode of "MISSING THE POINT"

I saw “The NBA will be no more before Wallace fails to break the top ten.” and Wallace not top 10? I doubt that will ever happen.". All I said was “I cant wait til the day when even Wallace wont crack the top ten” meaning I WANT our team to ONE DAY (not tomorrow) to be a storied franchise with a history of GREAT players. Future HoFs. I didnt compare us to the Lakers. Im just saying that Wallace wouldnt crack the top 10 of them and a list of other team’s top 10. And I ONE DAY wanna name a top 10 that doesnt include Wallace. I guess I have higher expectations for our team.

PS: With the exception of about 2 or 3 teams I named, Wallace would barely crack the the top 10 of the last 10-15yrs for them. So it actually has nothing to do with “50” yrs…

by focuslja on Aug 30, 2011 1:59 PM EDT up reply actions

The thing about Wallace is he was really the

first true “face”. I’m sure there will come a day where he wasn’t one of our top 10 talented players of all time (in a very distant future), but others won’t have the chance to be the first face of the franchise. That title will always belong to Crash.

Im not saying Bobcats top 20 and Lakers top 20. Im talking about the caliber and level of player Wallace is. Im saying in a traditional sense that Wallace isnt the type of player that you say is “our best player ever”. Thats all. He went to a #6 seed West team and instantly became the THIRD/FOURTH option. I was saying ONE DAY I hope that he wont crack our top ten.

Because Brandon Roy doesn't have bad knees

and Wesley Matthews is a franchise cornerstone which instantly made Wallace the fourth best on the team which instantly made him the fourth option.

Funny how everyone’s glasses so conviently missed the word “THIRD” just so they could argue the “4th”…its ok. Happens all the time. Anywho, Wallace wasnt number one CLEARLY. And the last month or so wasnt that far in front of Batum and Matthews. But when Roy cried, he was backburned which made him not one or two. Its cool that every site has a badguy but again my point remains that Wallace isnt a player that you would traditionally say “he is one of our greatest players ever”…and Im one of the biggest Crash fans ever (even when he was G-Force) and I even used to root when Radmo, DJ, and Wallace were playing together (Radwallesteen) but he ISNT they player that you want to say in retrospect is a “top ten player EVER”…

by focuslja on Aug 31, 2011 10:37 AM EDT up reply actions

I don't think top 10 is that bad.

But Wallace certainly isn’t the type of player you would want to call your greatest ever.

top 5 either..

of course I have been guilty of overrating Wallace (since Im a diehard fan) but since he’s gone and I can see a lil more clearly, I know that this list is indicative of major moves being made. I hope Cho is using his Engineering and Basketball skills while GM instead of his “financial” skills to make us a better team.

by focuslja on Aug 31, 2011 11:59 AM EDT up reply actions

And what can you do other than wait? I can’t see us moving Diaw for an expiring bc he is an expiring. All we can do is move Tyrus. That’s the only relief I see. I can’t see anyone taking Diop or Maggette unless LAC, TOR (ha!) or PHI (Iggy-less) are making a serious playoff push and Maggette is playing outta his mind by the deadline (but, Jax, Salmons, Wallace, Marion would be in that trade convo too). Its really a “elephant in the room” type of deal. We more than likely have to build how we can and wait out their contracts. Moving Tyrus would give us the mist relief

by focuslja on Aug 31, 2011 2:40 PM EDT up reply actions

With the unmovable contracts we’re talking about, the best option is likely just waiting them out. It’s not a quick fix. Good news: It will only take 2 years though.

By win shares (on a series of pretty bad teams), Wallace would rank in the franchise top ten for:
WAS-5th (between Greg Ballard and Gilbert Arenas)
Houston-7th (Otis Thorpe, Steve Francis)
Dallas-8th (Mark Aguirre, Steve Nash)
San Antonio-9th (Avery Johnson, Artis Gilmore)
Portland-9th (Clifford Robinson, Mychal Thompson)
SEA/OKC-9th (Nate McMillin, Dale Ellis)
New York-10th (Richie Guerin, Allan Houston)

is it

Or do they just get it from basketball reference? I’m sure its the latter. Win Shares (just like PER) is a good way of “bundling” everything into one stat. Which means it can be severely flawed. Nothing is more surefire than “watching” and observing. Someone like Rondo/Nash would have a lower rating than players they are better than. Someone with less minutes would have an advantage bc of the addition/subtracting of certain actions during that period of time. Nothing is more proficient than watching/observing a player’s skillset and gameplay. Which brings me back to my point, Wallace isn’t a player that in MOST CASES you would say is a top ten in the history of a franchise
