NBA Draft Grades 2011: Bobcats Stockpile Weapons, Promise Destruction

The Charlotte Bobcats got busy before the 2011 NBA Draft, putting together a three-team trade with the Milwaukee Bucks and Sacramento Kings. Charlotte ended up swapping a bad contract in Stephen Jackson for another in Corey Maggette -- treading water at best -- but turned the No. 19 pick into the No. 7. Not quite water into wine, but maybe, in this draft, grape juice into Two Buck Chuck. What'd they do with the pick?

Gained: Bismack Biyombo, Kemba Walker, Corey Maggette, cash considerations.

Gave up: Stephen Jackson, Shaun Livingston, rights to Tobias Harris, rights to Jeremy Tyler.

Synopsis: As noted about, moving from No. 19 (Harris) to No. 7 (Biyombo) was a pretty slick move by new GM Rich Cho. That allowed Charlotte to address two needs: guard depth and the frontcourt. (Maggette's also a better scorer than Jackson, and the 'Cats need scoring badly.) Walker isn't a fit with D.J. Augustin -- I can't see playing them together except in special circumstances -- but Kemba was already bordering on witchcraft at No. 9. It's one of those "take him, figure it out later" situations.

Will Biyombo pan out? He obviously showed the Bobcats something real in his workout there this week. We'll see.

Grade: B+.

First off,

I’d like to bid adieu to Shaun Livingston and especially Stephen Jackson. Without Jax, we’d still be searching for our first playoff contender. Thank you Jax and good luck in MIL, where at least you’ll have a better chance of making the playoffs than in CHA.

I think the grade is fair. I would give us an A but I try to take into account the quality of the draft class while assessing what we got. Kemba and Air Congo both have the opportunity to be starters on this team for a long time. I do think Kemba is the future at point guard. I don’t think he’s going to be leaps and bounds better than DJ, but he will be an improvement IMO. Although I think he’ll be a better defender than Deej, just seems to want it a little more, and that’s half of defense right there. Also, if Biyombo is as much a force in the paint as advertised, we could play Kemba and DJ together a little bit.

Air Congo fills so many needs immediately, save scoring. Get ready for some highlight reel blocks and slams. Wish we hadn’t sold Jeremy Tyler to GS, but at the end of the day he’s just a second round pick.

I think the Maggette-Jax swap was a smart one. Bad Porn is a couple years younger and will really fill the same role Jax did at practically the same contract. I wouldn’t agree that Bad Porn is a better scorer than Jax but it’s pretty close IMO.

Great job Cho & Co.! Now all we need is to resign Kwame and hope to God there’s a clause in the new CBA to wipe Diop off our asses and we’ll be in excellent position for the future.

Fitting grade.

Still expecting more off-season moves by Cho and Co. I’m hoping that we’re not gonna start the season with Maggette and McGuire as our only SFs. SMH.

Any updates on Charles Oakley? It’ll be nice to see him working on both Tyrus and Bismarck. Could be the second-coming of the Ben-Rasheed tandem. Yikes.

I like Cowherd and Skip actually

and they shared my sentiments as far as the draft. But if Cho is doing what I think he’s gonna do with the picks, I just may no I WILL reconsider.

by focuslja on Jun 24, 2011 1:25 PM EDT up reply actions

Cowherd and Bayless are bias analyst

They never have reasons for there decisions they just pick whether they like players. Colin said before the draft he thought Kemba was overrated he even said that he will not be in the league for more then 3 years so Cowherd is an idiot. I like Skip but he doesnt know what he is talking about he thinks just because MJ drafted them they are not good. The only thing he kept doing this morning was criticize MJ he did not really talk about Bismack or Kemba

by TS BOBCAT on Jun 24, 2011 3:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Why when they disagree with something we did its

because they are biased or idiots? That way of thinking has to stop. When I disagree with an “expert” (which is totally a subjective word) I get " they know more than you" but when an "expert or analyst disagrees its “they are idiots and biased”….I just dont see the point of moving up to draft Bismack. If it was about BPA, then why not draft Kemba first? Or if its about rebuilding, why trade for the “same player” with a worse contract? (I personally think Jax is better and he’s tougher and more passionate than Maggette)…It makes no sense. Why try to prolong the rebuilding? Its like we are relying on Harrison Barnes or Jared Sullinger which is tanking nor is it guaranteed. Why not take Houston’s picks and player and get 4 players? You would still come out fine. You would get younger, You wouldnt get Bismack but you get 3 other mid-1st rounders. If Houston was dealing for 10, of course they would deal for 7th. We couldve dealt Diaw and been sitting in a better position than we are not. But we drafted up to take Biyombo. Then we draft in the one are that we dont have any problems. It was a more PR move than rebuilding move, unless we arent finished dealing as far as those picks are concerned.

by focuslja on Jun 24, 2011 4:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Once again you do not know what happened with the Houston trade if it was ever real

And I know that those two are bias im not talking about all of them. They never have good reasons for why they say things I honestly think we are all smarter then those 2 or at least Cowherd. I dont know why your the only one so hung up on Maggette, no one else cares his contract is only a mil more you are overexagerating, but in order to move up in the draft we had to get rid of Stephen and take Corey, yes Stephen is better but Cho, Rod, Paul, and MJ obviously feel that Bismack can be a good player in the league and these are the guys that are smarter then us and know what they are doing. I know your still going to disagree but I think your so hung up on getting Maggette you are failing to see the real goal.

by TS BOBCAT on Jun 24, 2011 4:25 PM EDT up reply actions

So we made such a drastic move to get Biyombo?

If there’s more to this trade, Im good with it. If we are planning on keeping Biyombo, then thats not acceptable. If we are rebuilding then why would it matter who we pick? Why didnt we keep our 19th? Biyombo isnt worth that much movement and an extra million esp after ONE day of seeing him workout. I believe MJ has enough f-ups not to make such a random decision. Its more to this trade Im sure. I think we are about to help a team acquire Josh Smith. Diaw/Biyombo = enough to get Josh Smith. But he’s too much for us right now. We dump salary and get whatever from the team that acquire Smith. ATL get an expiring contract and finally get a center (a major team need). Such and Such gets Smith and we get cheap players from such and such

by focuslja on Jun 24, 2011 5:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Jesus.

Josh Smith isn’t good enough to be anything more than mediocre again. And not only that, Diaw and Biyombo isn’t even close to what ATL is asking for for Smith.

Focus, you’re a nice enough person, but most of the ideas you post on here are of your own fantasys and fascinations and are more often than not in the extreme minority. When the majority of people disagree with the majority of your ideas, you should take the hint that it might not be as amazing or accurate as you believe.

by Panthers FTW on Jun 24, 2011 5:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Actually kinda not. The majority of ppl on this site now think Skip Bayless, Cowherd, and Rich Bucher are “idiots and haters” bc they have similar sentiments. Diaw isnt what ATL wants. They want a center and their 9million in cap relief. They cant afford to take a contract that is the same as Smith’s for just as long. Biyombo allows them to move to Horford back and Diaw allows them to basically say “we got 9mil of cap relief right at the end of this season AND a serviceable PF/SF to play behind Horford and Marvin”.

by focuslja on Jun 24, 2011 5:36 PM EDT up reply actions

No we always thought Bayless and Cowherd were idiots

by focuslja on Jun 24, 2011 6:25 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree with him on most things sometimes

But today he really made no sense with his argument about the Bobcats. I know you think im just bias torward the Bobcats but im not all he talked about was that MJ amde the picks and that meant they were bad. But Cowherd is an embarresment to ESPN he is major bias(Patriots for example) and a Big City Dick Rider and he only likes stars, but he never has an actual argument for his reasons that is why Michelle Beadle always beats his ass on SN. If it was up to him he would only have the big market teams in the NBA and he has even said that on his radio show one morning

by TS BOBCAT on Jun 24, 2011 6:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Well they have paid their dues like everyone else. Cowherd has a pretty strong opinion and if the Heat wouldve won the championship the NBA wouldve went into a frenzy and chances are the Big 3 trend wouldve caused a vacuum effect on all the smaller franchises anyhow. I’ve seen that 5 well known analysts have called this a failure. And just now while on the site we love to hate Bleacher Report, I found 3 articles that say the same thing.

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/747696-nba-draft-2011-why-the-charlotte-bobcats-failed-in-this-years-draft

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/747567-nba-michael-jordan-doesnt-seem-cut-out-to-run-an-nba-franchise

by focuslja on Jun 24, 2011 6:53 PM EDT up reply actions

First off the people at BR are not exactly smart and not reliable to give a good opinion

Although I agree with the first articles thoughts on Kemba not being a need but not on his take on Biyombo and Tyrus. The 2nd one is not worth reading, he has no idea what he is talking about. What has MJ done that makes him a bad owner whenever he wants us to be more then a 8th seed team and went out and hired a GM that knows how to rebuild a team? You can go look at the poll in that article where he asks if MJ has proven to be a good owner more people put too soon to tell and yes he has then no he hasnt. It is called a guy that pretends to know basketball and try to write a logical article but does not know anything about this team. 1st article one was ok, the 2nd was a major fail

by TS BOBCAT on Jun 24, 2011 7:42 PM EDT up reply actions

So our opinions as fans are more valuable that theirs?

Still doesnt make any sense. It just seems that everyone who disagrees are presenting the same arguments. Including myself which I argued with James saying that Biyombo and Tyrus are basically the same player. Tyrus wingspan may be 2inches shorter. But wingspan is not enough to write them off as being the same player. If we look at the decisions made by Madoff Jordan, you can see why the second article makes sense. The only way to make this draft any different from past drafts is if something takes place with one of the picks. Im sorry but it seems weird that only and all the fans thought that the draft was anywhere close to good (other than me and brendan). If you compare it to past drafts then yes but Im not. Im comparing it to any draft for any team and it didnt make sense. I hope they have something up the sleeve bc Denver had the 23rd pick and ended up with Kenneth Faried and Jordan Hamilton. So I cant see Biyombo and Kemba being anything close to a B

Exactly.

Everyone else is looking at it as “well, the Bobcats are going to be worse next year than they were last year”. Duh!!! That’s the whole plan. Skip and Cowherd would rather have us dangling around .500 forever than to take a step back and rebuild.

I'm not clowning him for talking about the Bobcats

I just think he’s carved out his niche as “Hey, I’m the loudmouth prick who yells and screams and always takes the contrarian point of view” guy. I’m not sure he follows all sports and teams closely so he makes some brash opinions on things of which he has little knowledge.

As for his statement the Cats will be the worst team in the league next year …….. Uhhh, of course he might be right. We’ll stink. But if he knew anything about sports and the Bobcats overall plight, he (like Van Gundy and others last night) would understand what the Cats are doing and why they’re doing it. Unfortunately, there will always be teams in every league that are forced to hit the reset button.

Big Names are made by game play…its not the other way around. Most players that are productive are being written off bc they dont already have a big name. The only players that were manufactured were Lebron and MJ…I think if we focus on first putting a system in place and then bulding a TEAM, we can beat anyone. Look at the Nuggets. And the Blazers. The Suns. Grizzlies. Even though they might have a Star, its only bc the system maximized their talents. All products of building a TEAM instead of relying on one or two players to be good. Im starting to think that if we are keeping our draft picks, then Maggette may be here for a while.

kirilenko

will give them 60 games, that’s good enough… and he plays hard

although i don’t believe he missed any games last year because of his back (his knee instead), so maybe his back woes are behind him

I can't remember the last time

Kirilenko and Deron played a full season they are both fragile. I hope they win more games than us we need that great draft position.

We didn't get maggette to be in our future

He helped us get the player we wanted, If his ankle is fully healed and buy’s into our system, he will become a plus and may last more than one season. Right now we are not interested in trading Tyrus, he has this year to prove himself, if he gets hurt again and misses a lot of games I think he will be packaged to help us fill a different need. The CP3 and Howard talk always bring haters out, commenting that they would never come here even if it was the last place on earth for them. Personally I don’t think they will come here but it’s not impossible, I’ve stayed out of that conversation since day one. We are rebuilding our team, we will build a young team that will get to the playoffs and improve on that instead of an old over the cap one. I think we will be major players in the 2012 and 2013 FA market. I dont know who all is available during those two years, But were not doomed if we don’t get Howard or CP3.

Im starting to have mixed feelings on Maggette. Im thinking (IMO) I THINK…they front office felt as if he is somewhat more athletic than Jax and basically the same gameplay and a few years younger. In order to move him, we will have to package him. So I feel as if may keep through this season. They may also feel he’ll work better than Salmons or JAX with Kemba. Silas did mention getting a Veteran, but Im not sure this is the one he’s speaking of.

we will get a star

after all that has been written I don’t know why you can’t understand it will come, and it’s not going to be today. We would rather get him through the draft like OKC or Chicago, last resort is through FA.

I feel the same ( he's the one that fell on our lap)

Jax if far more demanding than Corey, I think Corey will be a better fit with the young guys If he is healthy and buy’s in. When Jax is on the floor it’s all about him, that overbearing quality can slow the development of our young guards.

I can see that...

I kinda want Al Thonton, Reggie Williams, or Shawne Williams to back up at SF though. They finish strong, athletic, rebound and play decent defense and can knock down that 3. They could be a staple on a team and finally have a home…

The way this team is reconstructing

Those are the type of players we need to sign. Guys that can run from baseline to baseline finish above the rim to keep up with Kemba and Biz. DJ would also benefit from that type of offense, lets sign those young thoroughbreds.
