We're building similar to GS

DJ and Hendo, but a high speed lineup of DJ and Kemba

DJ
Kemba
Hendo
Tyrus
Biyombo

Talk about an athletic 5!

We are gonna be tough on that end…Just don’t ask us to score very much. Couldn’t be happier honestly…

That's an incredibly small backcourt

And Hendo is too small to be a forward. I think this is a horrible lineup… Two key players out of position.

kemba will play PG

he and augustine will battle for starter. though this lineup would be an option as a small change of pace. henderson CAN defend the SF, so maybe we see this some.

YES

I watched a lot of college basketball when Adam Morrison won player of the year and then became the biggest flop of a draft pick this franchise has ever had. Its a good idea to pick good NBA players, not good college players. Walker could be good, but I’d rather not risk a top 10 pick on a 6 foot PG.

Mufasa was the safe pick, this is the high risk, high reward pick

We can pretty much guarantee Mufasa will never be a star, never be great offensively. But he’ll also most definitely be a great defensive and rebounding starter for years to come.

Kemba on the other hand has a huge ceiling. And you have to take a chance on a guy like this when you don’t have a top pick.

WHO'S OUR CENTER ?

Hey MJ and Rich, now that Jack is gone we must have something $$ to at least go after a mid level center (Dalembert, Kaman, anyone!) but right now all we have signed is freakin’ Diop.

by chris in union county on Jun 23, 2011 9:54 PM EDT reply actions

Kaman isn't even a free agent

And Kaman and Dalembert won’t fit the Bobcat budget. Kwame hopefully will. Trading Jackson didn’t save money. Mags earns slightly more. Trading Liv saved a little money, but that partially offset by moving up in the draft.

by ClipCat on Jun 24, 2011 12:03 AM EDT up reply actions

megette's contract matches RB stephen jackson's

so its a wash in dollars saved. theres no extra cap space from this deal

by bobcatsbrendan on Jun 24, 2011 9:10 AM EDT up reply actions

I don't think you are paying attention

It’s a 2 part process… Drop the old, big contracts, in favor of young, cheap players. Maggette was part of the deal to make the Biyombo move. Now, when they unload him probably by next summer, we’ll have those younger pieces in place… Get it?

STEVE SMITH!

by southtunnel on Jun 24, 2011 11:49 AM EDT up reply actions

Plus, it'll be easier to trade Maggette than Jax because he is younger and doesn't have the excess baggage.

If a contender comes calling at the deadline, we may be able to swing another Crash-like deal with Maggette and acquire some mid to late round picks for next year’s draft.

I'm gonna live forever, I'm never gonna die. The only thing I fear is I'm never gonna fly.

by Charlotte Bobcat on Jun 24, 2011 12:03 PM EDT up reply actions

We got 2 1st's for Wallace right?

We should be able to net 1 1st for Maggette… Especially to a desperate team that needs an extra piece for their playoff push. That would give us 3 1st round picks next year. With our pick being possibly a high lottery pick.

This wouldn’t surprise me at all.

STEVE SMITH!

by southtunnel on Jun 24, 2011 12:08 PM EDT up reply actions

Exactly. That's what I think the plan is at this point.

I'm gonna live forever, I'm never gonna die. The only thing I fear is I'm never gonna fly.

by Charlotte Bobcat on Jun 24, 2011 12:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Portland's pick isn't ours until 2013.

And I doubt Maggette would be able to net us a 1st. If his contract was expiring, certainly. But not with an extra year on it (unless he does the unthinkable and puts up HUGE numbers this year). The only trade scenario I see as a possibility this season is as we near the trade deadline, we do a three-team trade where one team gets Maggette, one team gets Diaw (and his valuable expiring), while we get a young role-player and a first round pick.

And that’s assuming we don’t trade Diaw this offseason (which I’m seeing as unlikely that we actually get a good deal for him, so hopefully we can get some value at the deadline).

by Panthers FTW on Jun 24, 2011 1:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Maggette is 32

he isnt that much younger than Jackson and his contract is a million more. Any team willing to take that would probably be willing to take Jackson also…

by focuslja on Jun 24, 2011 12:19 PM EDT up reply actions

That's true to an extent,

but you’re not factoring in Maggette has less baggage. I agree though, they are basically the same player with the same value. on the market. I like it because we basically traded Livingston for the right to move up 12 spots in the draft. We didn’t lose much trade value in this deal, or sacrifice cap room.

I'm gonna live forever, I'm never gonna die. The only thing I fear is I'm never gonna fly.

by Charlotte Bobcat on Jun 24, 2011 12:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Jackson is a better player than Maggette.

Maggette has a veerryy slight edge in offensive productivity, but Jax is one of the better defenders in the league still. We won’t get a first rounder for Maggette without packaging him with something else. Probably Boris (as I said above).

It was still a great, great trade though.

by Panthers FTW on Jun 24, 2011 1:09 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree that Jackson is a better player,

but with all of the added baggage (techs and all), it reduces him to about the same trade value as Maggette.

I'm gonna live forever, I'm never gonna die. The only thing I fear is I'm never gonna fly.

by Charlotte Bobcat on Jun 24, 2011 2:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Considering that some people believed that Stephen Jackson should net two first round picks

I’d say Maggette is a downgrade. I don’t want to live in a world where Maggette can net two first round picks.

by Panthers FTW on Jun 24, 2011 2:08 PM EDT up reply actions

I think they both may be able to net 2 low first round picks

next year when their contracts are expiring, can’t see it at all this year though.

I'm gonna live forever, I'm never gonna die. The only thing I fear is I'm never gonna fly.

Actually...This is from my upcoming article on trade street post but...

…Jax and Liv would have made a total of $12,760,000 in the 2011/2012 season, and $13,560,000 in the 2012/2013 season. Maggette is due $10,262,069 in the 2011/2012 season, and $10,924,138 in the 2012/2013 season. Now the savings over those 2 years is $5,133,793.00….

Minus the 3mil for Biyombo buyout

subtract the pick we sold and that’s 1mil from the buyout

we saved about 2million…

I guess Kemba wasn't really falling down draft boards too badly eh?

I think most of the time the mocks had him going right around that #9 slot. I wasn’t particularly on board with the Kemba selection this morning but I’m excited to have him on the team now. He brings a lot of intangibles to the table and its not like he’s unathletic or anything. Would’ve preferred moving DJ and keeping Liv but I suppose they were too wary of Liv’s knee holding up with full starter minutes and then being left with a rookie starting every night at point. Also Kemba can not only develop into a fine player but a true leader as well. I feel like that gets undervalued sometimes.

As of now

I’d go far as far as it is our best. Of course its only, what, an hour since the draft ended. Both our 1st rounders will see plenty of time on the court. And trading Jax away puts us one step closer towards getting the ‘cycle’ for our team down. These young’ns grow together to become the veteran base in the future and from there its a matter of injecting youth and mantaining continuity. And Kemba’s not only good on the court, his off court impact could be big. Kemba may not be much different from DJ in terms of distributing but he’s a far superior floor general, if you understand what I mean. I expect him to become the leader for our very young team.

ESPN had a poll yesterday: Kyrie Irving vs. Kemba Walker

Who would be the better PG? And Irving only had about a 5% favor. I personally think Derrick Williams was the closest to a sure thing in this draft. However if you are going PG, our is arguably as good a prospect as #1 overall.

anybody else NOT convinced biz markie is really a bobcat, and is gonna be packaged to houston?

heres the theory: kevin mchale clearly had a man crush on biyombo, and stated as much. houston just traded there only real center miller to minny as part of the flynn trade. houston like to play with undersized post players, like chuck hayes.

charlotte worked out SF marcus morris twice and loved he “ready to play” scoring touch. charlotte was in talks to move 9 for 14 & 23 before milwaukee called us. charlotte now has 2 scoring undersized PG’s who will want to start, only one can.

here is whats gonna happen in the next few days. once the 3 way is offical with physicals taken and passed, charlotte is gonna trade C bizmack biyombo& SF corey magette to houston for SF marcus morris C/ F jordan hill and SF/SG chase buddinger.

Yep

We would darn near have to take their whole team.
Diaw or Maggette would only work if we too Kevin Martin…

I just had an epiphany while typing….

Houston wants the “Team Changing Trade”…They have been saying this all offseason
They are also in the running for Josh Smith. The are one of the few teams with the assets. With Biyombo, they can make it work. ATL gets Biyombo and Diaw (and a few 1st rders from Hou) and maybe Hill. We get pretty much whoever we want (maybe and extra first rounder) and Houston gets Smith. Throw in Maggette and add Marvin Williams and it still works…

Thats exactly what I thought...

I was praying us moving up had some other motive behind it. I think what Brenden said makes sense. Well….at least I hope our FO is thinking the same thing. The Maggette thing threw me for a loop…and am I the only one who noticed Houston took Parsons too? Leaving them with Williams, Lee, Blakely, Parsons. Morris, Budinger and Martin on the wings? Not to mention the influx on PFs already on the the team. With Yao coming off the books 18mil, and them drafing Donatas Montie and trading away Miller. They have nothing if Chuck Hayes doesnt resign. Its gotta be more bc what forced Diaw to sign right before the draft? What did we gain from Maggette? And Augustin for Dragic and Flynn makes alot of sense huh? I actually traded Augustin for Dragic on 2k11 bc Dragic is a big PG and he can shoot the 3. (Barea with size).

Maybe we keep him one year. But he’ll eventually be unloaded, somehow to make room for a bigger-time FA. And I think having these young pieces in place, and cap space is part of the plan of enticing that future FA.

Last CBA allowed teams to buy out a player immediately

I think we’ll likely buy out Maggette if that’s the case. The $2 million for Tyler supports this too

by James Dator on Jun 24, 2011 12:05 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

He’s not of the same caliber… now if he starts for us and puts up over 15 ppg then it’s a possibility

by James Dator on Jun 24, 2011 12:17 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

He will

Maggette has made a career of scoring lots of points for bad teams. He doesn’t have much competition at SF or as the #1 option on offense. I expect 20-25 PPG and 20-25 wins next season. However, Mags isn’t the kind of player good teams look for at the trade deadline. He requires lots of shots and doesn’t produce much besides PPG.

by ClipCat on Jun 24, 2011 2:03 PM EDT up reply actions

If he manages to score 20-25 PPG, then that's best case scenario.

We will almost certainly get a late first rounder for him if he manages to put up numbers like that. If we can’t get that for him this year, his expiring contract coupled with this 20+ PPG will certainly make him a valuable trade piece.

That’s only if he plays well for us though.

by Panthers FTW on Jun 24, 2011 2:11 PM EDT up reply actions

20 PPG doesn't mean he's playing well though

PPG is mostly a reflection of how much a player plays and how many shots he takes. Maggette is a useful player on a team that doesn’t have scorers because that’s what he does. Unfortunately he doesn’t do much else, and he doesn’t share well with others. Consider him the anti-Diaw.

by ClipCat on Jun 26, 2011 12:09 AM EDT up reply actions

Maggette isnt an expiring contract

so I doubt we get a first rd pick for him. I know Wallace wasnt either but he had more value to his team than Maggette will…

by focuslja on Jun 24, 2011 12:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Although I'd still consider buying out Diop

I’m not a big fan of Maggette but he can contribute. Diop is useless. But I understand there is a $7 million difference too.

And I know you know this James but just so everyone else is clear on how the amnesty clause works (if it happens again): We can buyout one player and he doesn’t count against the cap or luxury tax. But MJ still has to pay him!

Kemba's going to LOVE playing for Paul Silas

What causes you to ride the bench under Silas? Passing up good shots.

Well I’ve read multiple sources now suggest he was the “most explosive scorer in the draft”… both in the paint and shooting from mid-range. Just what we need. Hopefully his size will not be an issue, because let’s be honest… We all know the potential limitations of having an undersized scorer.

we have the wallace trade exemption (3 mill) so when magette hits our books, does his contract go down a little because of being absorbed into those exemption dollars? going from 12 mil to 7mill ?

No

An exception doesn’t change a contract in any way, it just allows you to take on more salary than you send out in a future deal. This trade was close enough I doubt the exception even comes into play.

by djwilliams11 on Jun 24, 2011 10:02 AM EDT up reply actions

You are correct

The exception would only kick in if we took in over 125% more than we sent out. In this case, we actually dropped payroll.

One of the most exciting things to me about drafting Biyombo is his age.

overall

if you look at our draft to try to find a way that we can become INSTANTLY better, then you’re going to hate it.
yes, we added a very raw F/C that cant shoot, but we did it because his ceiling is stupid high.
yes, we added (another) undersized PG, but this one has a winning mentality.

these two pieces are both potential picks, and potential is what we want when you rebuild.

analysts are always going to negate the rebuilding idea because they want to see something get better instantly. i remember all the bashing Seatle/OKC got when they took Serge and Westbrook because they “wernt ready yet”.
if you go into the draft understanding what you’re getting, then you cant get a bust. if you’re expecting Biyombo to average 11 points a game, then you’ll find him to be an international flop.
but if you expect him to come in and play defense for 15-20 minutes, then he’s a steal.

same can be said for Kemba Skywalker (kinda)
if you’re expecting him to get 25 points a game (which would be nice), then you’ll be disappointed early on in his career. he can become that 25ppg person though, IN TIME.

gentlemen, like i’ve said all week, lets suck this year so we can go on a roll 2 years from now.

Analysts are so dumb

Because, yeah, there are tons of player’s available at the back of the lottery that are able to come in and make the All-Star team their rookie year right?

exactly.

every report ive heard has been “i dont know why you get a big man that cant score” and they completely disregard his ability to defend.

scoring wins games; defense wins championships. just ask LeBron…

Heck he's only 18

Whose to say he can’t develop into a monster, he’s got time. I’m honestly excited because at 18 he’s still got room to develop.

Oh I know, I'm real excited

Don’t anybody jump on my because I’m not saying Bismack is the next D. Howard, but how was Howard’s game when he was taken #1 at age 18? Pretty non-existent.

Well at the Nike summit Bismack had what

Something like 10 points, 1e rebounds and 10 blocks (at least close to that), heck a couple years ago Howard just averaged around 10 points and 10 rebounds. I think this dude has potential because for the next 20 or so years he is going to be in a gym so heck, if he puts his mind to it he could shoot like Ray Allen or post like Dirk.

ever notice how the city of Charlotte has always been shafted when it comes to big men?

When you break it down

basketball is a simple sport. You have to have more points than the other team when 0.0 buzzes on the scoreboard. A big man that can rack up the points but has no defense is basically equivalent to a player like Bismack.

Instantly better will happen next summer

We’ll have young high potential pieces in place. Maggette will be unloaded to free up tons of cap space. And we’ll use this to entice a big time FA to sign here.

STEVE SMITH!

by southtunnel on Jun 24, 2011 12:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes.

We have cap room, we’ll have another great young prospect after bottoming out this season, and we have Micheal Jordan as the GM. We’ll have a chance in FA. Will we get Chris Paul or Dwight Howard? Maybe, maybe not. If we do, great! We have instantly turned the team around, and our rebuilding will be nearly complete. If we don’t, no a huge loss. We’ll be awful still, but we’ll have another top pick in 2013, PLUS Portland’s 2013. Not to mention if we can get any value out of Boris’s expiring this season and Maggette’s next season, that’ll just be cake.

In the end, we’re not putting all our eggs in one basket (ala the Knicks) and have several backups if the best case scenario doesn’t pan out.

I just hope and pray the front office doesn’t do the worst possible thing and sign a lesser FA for big money just because they missed out. I’ll pass on the Rudy Gays and Joe Johnsons of the world, thanks.

I feel like Cho is going to ensure we don't make any short sighted moves like that.

He really seems like a guy who is very focused on sustained success and long term goals.

here's an interesting fact:

Cho has traded the same pick 3 times now.

19 was the Hornets until Cho traded for it with Portland;
Cho then sent the 19th to us for Crash;
Cho now sent the 19th to Milwaukee.

9 degrees from Kevin Bacon? not really, but maybe Jimmer

thats more reason why he like to flip

his assets many times. like flipping a traded player or pick for more players or picks. I would expect the next to get his shipping news is boris diaw.

You do realize multiple teams have offered Philly much more than that for Iggy

You can’t get something for nothing. Also, I expect Diaw to be in the starting lineup on opening day whenever that is. His passing will become much more valuable with a non-passing SF taking over for Jax and a non-passing PG taking over for Livingston.

by ClipCat on Jun 26, 2011 12:19 AM EDT up reply actions

Why would we do this trade? Both of our players have expiring contracts. We don’t need to add another big $$$ contact for 3 yrs.

Coach Rivera, may we please have one of these FA Nnamdi Asomugha or Jonathan Joseph

by Lazy Dog on Jun 25, 2011 8:40 AM EDT up reply actions

No.

We’re not trying to win anytime soon, no reason to take any big contracts on.

Boris should only be traded for a draft pick, and if he can’t get a draft pick, don’t trade him.

by Panthers FTW on Jun 25, 2011 11:09 AM EDT up reply actions

Not worth it.

I echo Lazy Dog’s sentiments exactly. Iggy is not the guy we want to use two valuable expiring contracts for.

If Jimmer pans out hes the perfect backcourt mate for Tyreke, who’s moving to the 2. But Minny did get effed in the a on Saturday.

Well reports are out that they are making a run for Aaron Brooks...

Well if they get Brooks, they look like they could be lower playoffs and pull a Grizzlies…

by focuslja on Jun 27, 2011 5:53 AM EDT up reply actions

No way could they pull a Grizzlies

The Grizzlies playoff run was mainly predicated on their selfless ball movement and the fact that they had two dominant big men in the paint. Show me an offense with DeMarcus Evans and Tyreke Evans that could even meekly qualify as having good ball movement.

It's not about where the teams were before the trade.

It’s about the value of the trade in and of itself. Disregard the status of the teams, and evaluate the trade based solely on all the pieces involved.

Bobcats = Win.
Bucks = Meh.
Kings = WTF?

Cam Newton for '11 ROY!

by Newsinz on Jun 25, 2011 12:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Bucks saved some money so "meh" is pretty good in their case

Maggette and Salmons were two of their bad contracts they wanted to move, and they got rid of them both while taking back only one similar contract in Jackson. This trade was pretty good for them. I don’t understand what the Kings were thinking though. They must have really good memories from the first time Salmons played for them.

by ClipCat on Jun 26, 2011 12:23 AM EDT up reply actions

I’d rather have Salmons playing the SF than SG for one. And they have Tyreke, Thornton, Jimmer, Cousins, Dalembert, Casspi, Thompson and word is they are going after Aaron Brooks. I think they will be just fine with the right coaching.

by focuslja on Jun 27, 2011 5:56 AM EDT up reply actions

Most of those guys are a black hole.

A bunch of me-first players who need the ball in their hands to be effective will not make a good team.
