Dante Cunningham arrested, sources say with marijuana :: UPDATE - statement from Bobcats
Great. It's not a HUGE deal, but still something to keep an eye on. Also, I think this may be the first time a Bobcats player has been arrested.
Via NBC Philadelphia
Dante Cunningham, former Villanova basketball star and current NBA player for the Charlotte Bobcats, was arrested in Radnor Township Friday, sources tell NBC Philadelphia.
Cunningham was pulled over by township police on the 100 block of East Lancaster Avenue for alleged speeding and reckless driving Friday, according to sources.
After Cunningham was pulled over, police found marijuana, a marijuana pipe and a loaded BB gun, sources say.
Sources tell NBC Philadelphia that Cunningham was driving a silver pickup truck with Oregon plates.
The exact charges against Cunningham are not yet known. Cunningham was released pending a hearing, sources say.
Via Mike Cranston:
Bobcats statement: "We are aware of the unfortunate incident involving Dante Cunningham in Pennsylvania..."
"...We are in the process of gathering more information and will have no further comment until the legal process has run its course."

Not good
I don’t remember another Bobcat getting arrested off the top of my head. I think Melvin Ely was present for a shooting at a strip club but I don’t think he was arrested. I know Bernie’s son got arrested for a DUI but he was an assistant coach, not a player.

We had one cokehead assistant and Phil Ford is an alcoholic.
But one shouldn’t be surprised that’s the sort of riff-raff Larry Brown associated himself with.

PHIL FORD BABY!!!
Rocky Mount’s finest… Him and my dad was on the same basketball team in school…
Not a big deal at all.
As long as he didnt have like a TON of MJ he should be able to pay his way out of trouble.
If a player on our team had to be arrested for something, I am glad that it was for marijuana.
Well at least we Know
we’re gonna need a backup SF and SG. I dont think he’s comin back unless we are totally out of options (CJ Miles (FA), T-Will (trade))
I certainly don't think this means it's a forgone conclusion that a little marijuana arrest (if that is what he was arrested for) will stop the Bobcats from offering him a contract
He’s hardly a negative influence on the team. He’s a kid. I’d expect the Bobcats to definitely have a talk with him. If he comes off as immature and unlikely to change, they’ll let him go.
Good thing the Bulls didn’t pull the rug from under Joakim Noah for his arrest in 2008

He's not under contract...
I could see if he was one of our players BUT with this happening and with so many better options at SF in FA, i dont think it really helps his chances at all. We are in rebuilding mode and the last thing we need are distractions. We got enough problems
What is it with you and t-will?

We dont NEED him I agree
But I think with us losing Gerald, there are few players in this league that can fill that void of (Reb, defense, scoring, energy). There are a couple players that may possess 2 of the 4 but anyone who posessed all 4 are probably too expensive for us to talk about. Artest/Lebron/Lamar/Melo ect… T-Will is still young and during the time he got to play in his rookie season, he impressed. A few disagreements and a coaching change kinda sealed his fate in NJ and Aldemen just didnt have him in the plans. (Bc Houston is stockpiled with SFs)…Im no guru but most of the time when I see talent, they usually go on to become something. I think he has the chance to be something special in this league if he ever gets a chance to play. He is all around and I think with us planning on ridding ourselves of JAX, he could step in a play the role that Wallace once filled. Thats all. But its just my opinion and until he proves me otherwise ON THE COURT…imma stick with it. Better than continuing to talk about resigning a mediocre guy who just got arrested for possession.

No it's not
Natural coca leaves are practically harmless. But to make cocaine a solvent (usually toxic like kerosene) has to be used to strip cocaine from coca leaves. Then there’s another highly unnatural process of solidifying and crystallizing it.

illegal is illegal tho. Its not j-walking or parking tickets. He’s only playing bc we are shorthanded. It has nothing to do with his actual talent. Not saying he’s not talented but he simply isnt good enough or established enough as a player to be making such mistakes. With the number of SFs (better) that are available in FA and not to mention if we make a few trades, why would he jeopardize his career so soon?

Surprising...
…and puzzling. Can’t recall DC ever being anything but straight-arrow. Sorry, guys.
Having survived the “Jail Blazers” era, and its consequent negative effect on fan support, players we sign in Portland are nowadays carefully vetted, including Cunningham. If there are “character issues,” no matter how talented a player is, we’re likely to pass. Portland let Zach Randolph go, although admittedly his considerable talents were well-established after six seasons here —as were his persistent “legal difficulties.”
Dante IS young and, while that doesn’t excusing his stupidity, getting busted for a small amount of marijuana is maybe not in quite the same class as dog fighting, attempted rape, domestic abuse, or grand theft. The team, and perhaps the league, will have to exercise some sanctions, but ultimately it’s up to the fans in Charlotte where the line will be drawn, and under what circumstances.
Dante is going to receive an extremely strong message from mom and dad, however. Guaranteed.
I was hopin we didnt sign him back in the first place
So its no big deal and really no decision to make in my eyes. Big or Small, its illegal and he’s not good enough for us to put too much thought in this decision.
I think I know who you are...
You’re Larry Brown aren’t you? The way you hate the young players, seem to ramble on about random stuff, it’s almost like I can hear you yelling at me to turn my music down. Don’t you worry Larry the Bobcats are in good hands now, and although we have a few young whippersnappers who may indulge in borderline criminal activity at least we will be getting rid of Dominic McGuire, which should free up the space for a man known as Inferno a crowd favorite, with a strong work ethic who seemed to be blossoming in Charlotte. I understand you want to trade young talent for random expensive role players but that isn’t how the Bobcats are run anymore so if you would kindly show yourself out, I hear Temple might need an assistant coach, maybe you can do that rather than trolling a website about your old team and spend your glory years doing what you love, yelling at children.

Im probably one of the youngest people on this site
When I do mention young players. The response is scrutiny. But it seems to me that illegal activity is acceptable. I dont care that weed is supposedly “cool” and “its a new age”. Thats bullshit. You know thats bullshit… He’s not Kobe, Lebron, Melo. Hell he isnt even Sprewell. He’s not good enough for this to be thought about too much. I could see if he was signed to a contract and we thought about punishment. But technically he isnt apart of the team. So why bring back a distraction that you basically dont have to deal with? He wont be a starter in this league for about 3 or 4yrs. Whats the point? Its like bringing back Garrett Temple or Javaris Crittenton. Its not going to make or break us to have him. Having him isnt goin to add wins or make us lose anymore than we would w/o him. HE’S NOT THAT GOOD. Why are we even discussing Daunte Cunningham? Im not disrespecting the reporter but some of us are making it seem like he’s the future. Thats laughable. It says more about the condition of our team when we have serious discussions on whether a convicted Daunte Cunningham is still worthy to be resigned
PS…The Bb Gun meant he was either planning to rob someone, somewhere he didnt need to be (big time crime area) or he was scared and didnt have the heart to have a real gun…
A) HE’S NOT CONVICTED.
B) Having a BB gun does not mean he was planning to rob someone or anything. Making assumptions like that is incredibly STUPID.

Sorry...he was Arrested
Arrested makes it no better. Now I put 2 other options for why he was carrying a bb gun… a grown man doesnt carry a bb gun to shoot bbs at ppl. Its not definate that he was carrying it for that reason but…BE SERIOUS BEN. What is he doin with a bb gun? Does he let his kids play with bb guns? IDK. I hate to keep using the “where Im from” argument in this thread (bc it doesnt define who i am as a person) but I KNOW what grown men do with bb guns. In most cases (esp with drugs involved) it one of the 3.
Wrong.
The town ordinance bans all bb guns of any type.

I don’t know what he’s doing with a BB gun and it isn’t my place to make assumptions. You can make all the brash assumptions you want, but acting like it’s fact is highly presumptuous and reckless. If you want to say stuff like that, perhaps the Charlotte Observer comment section is more fitting.

Its a blog
i thought we was allowed to have an opinion. Im not passing it off as a fact. Its not illegal to have a bb gun. But some things just add up. In any event, it was more reckless to do what he did from a personal and professional standpoint than me offering me my opinion on why a grown man is carrying a bb gun…Imma FANATIC for the Bobcats and events and actions like this is harmful to our growth…not saying he’s a bad person. What Im saying is how do we consider such actions at this point and time as excusable and STILL consider resigning mediocre FA (with obvious offcourt issues)
It IS illegal to have a BB gun (of any type) in Radnor township, where he was arrested.

You took some things a little far
First off, how is it even a distraction? It happened in the offseason so by the time any form of organized team activities start, this will be looong forgotten. How will players or coaches on our team be distracted by Cunningham having weed 5 months prior to training camp?
Secondly, I knew you didn’t like Inferno but comparing him to Garrett Temple and Javaris Crittenton? Jesus man. Are you that blinded by your bias? Garrett Temple has been in the D-League for a reason and Crittenton is currently looking for a job. Cunningham’s a second round pick in his third year in the league. He is still developing and is a good bench player right now. It’s not All-Star or bust in the NBA.
And thirdly, I can understand not liking him as a player, but you’re gonna accuse the man of about to rob somebody? I got kicked out of UNC because a kid I was letting stay in my room had a gun but didn’t tell me. If somebody read the police report on what happened to me, you could just assume I was going to rob somebody too. Point is, don’t make rash assumptions about shit you know NOTHING about.

First off I DID NOT ASSUME HE WAS GOING TO ROB SOMEONE
I suggested why I thought a grown man has posession of a bb gun in his CAR (not a room, a CAR). Now again, its a reason why bb guns are banned in (if Im not mistaken, Philly?). Two, there are TWO more reasons why I THOUGHT a grown man would be riding around with a bb gun. Nobody seems to bring those up.
Now for some reason we seem to think that DC is so much better than Temple or any of the “last men standing” at the end of the season. Ive seen such claims as “his midrange jumper is automatic”lol…Nothing he does is automatic. Nor is he better than (Pietrus, Rasual/Caron Butler, W. Chandler, JR Smith, AL Thornton, Jamario Moon, Sam/Thad Young, Battier, Shawne Williams, Deaquan Cook, Grant Hill, CJ Miles, or Mo Evans, Jeff Green)…I just named all the SF FAs (just the SFs)…Now a couple of thos guys are going to contenders and a couple are getting big contacts BUT…all of those guys are better than DC. If we supposed to be drafting JONES, what makes you think we are going to keep Cunningham? HE’S NOT THAT GOOD. I know we are to root for players on our team and some of us seem to have some “I See More than Meets The Eye Basketball Player Skill Grading” glasses on. But maybe its just me who was unimpressed…
Finally, you DO know that ppl dont go to trial the same day they get arrested right? Sometimes its a couple months down the line. Anything directly/indirectly negative involving the team and its players is a distraction. If the league has an anti drug policy and you break it, you suffer consequences DURING the season. Whether its a program or a suspension. If the league has an Anti Drug Policy whether its legal by law or not, if the league that you play for has an Anti Drug policy, why would you break it. If you give me a place to stay and I steal from you, its ingrateful. This is what he did by doing this. Alot of ppl are tryn to justify it by saying it was “a little bud” or “weed should b legalized” bullshit…missing the whole point of, ITS NOT LEGAL and there is a POLICY against it in the NBA
I just fail to see how it's going to distract anybody
And I’m not saying he’s great, just that he’s better than you give him credit for, that’s all. Those guys are better than him right now and I’m not arguing that. But it comes down to how much you’re being paid for your production. If we can bring one of those guys in at a reasonable price, then I’m all for it. I’m just operating under the assumption we won’t. And for the record, he IS better than Temple. There’s really no arguing that IMO.

facts are facts. I was told a long time ago that the media has an agenda. The govt controls what is shown on television. Its either mind numbing or brainwashing. So far that theory hasnt been proven to be wrong. Show me camera footage with such and such on a plane. I bet you cant do that. Until you can, you cant blame anyone. Exactly, you just proved my point
The media is the ones that expect me to believe they salvaged a plastic plane ticket from the rubbage. C’mon Mike. Steel beams were MELTED. No black box but its a plastic plane ticket? C’mon Mike. Steel Beams were MELTED. Supposedly they got pilots license to “hijack and CRASH a plane”. C’mon Mike. Steel Beams were MELTED…
If you throw out everything you heard from the media, then how do you know steel beams were melted? How do you know anything happened at all? If you don’t know anything, then what’s your point and why are you writing it?
its not a Throw out thing...its a 2+8=14 thing...
You cant tell me steel beams were melted/no survivors but we find a plastic ID card? You telling me the black box (supposedly to be indestructable for this very reason) is destroyed? But we find a plastic ID card? You tryn tell me it took 11yrs to find someone who is in a 2-400mi radius supposedly the whole time IN A MANSION. NOBODY tracked any of those VHS tapes “he” supposedly sent? But they ALWAYS made it to where they were supposed to?
I’m asking what you are basing your opinions on? You selectively decide what to believe, and faulty logic leads to crackpot conclusions. This apparantly extends well beyond basketball discussions.

The beams melted because the fire repellent
sprayed onto the beams was poorly done and was practically blown off by the impact. Don’t underestimate the heat produced by a 747 filled with jet fuel. And for all the evidence you put forth for your conspiracy, there is 10x the evidence to the contrary. You really have to look at both sides and not just the facts that support your argument.

Laws against marijuana are ridiculous for so many reasons that I won’t bother getting into here. This doesn’t change the fact that I personally want Cunningham back in a Bobcats jersey next fall one bit.
Hell, this might even work in our favor if other teams shy away from him after this arrest. Load up another bowl, Dante!

This isn’t a big deal at all and should not affect whether or not he is signed back. He showed some promise last year and he can only improve next year. He should be back with the Bobcats next year!
it shouldnt affect if he's resigned
I agree bc our decision shouldve been made b4 this incident anyway
most players in this league smoke
whether we agree with it or not, it’s a fact….i highly doubt this has an affect on whether he will be resigned
i think he will be back with us next year

If anything, this may be a good thing because other teams may blow this out of proporation and not offer him a deal for it.

Why are we justifying this?
You cant justify it. Illegal is illegal. Whether most players smoke or not, dont justify it. I think alot of you guys maybe 22 or younger. the law is the law brotha. You cant do it. Then not to mention he aint no star player. He a young dude thats getting an opportunity to play. But his dont value his profession enough to let go a few vices? He’s not that good. Had it not been the Bobcats, he wouldntve had a chance to play for NO OTHER TEAM in the league this season. EVERY OTHER TEAM HAS BETTER SFS THAN CUNNINGHAM. He just made it THAT much harder to get his shot… So if you a smoker, fine. But dont try to justify it bc you do it. Illegal is illegal.
I'm 26,
and everyone understands that it is illegal, but so is jay walking. While here, Cunningham showed a lot of potential and could be a key piece in the lineup going forward in our rebuilding. No one is really justifying his actions, we’re just saying that it’s really not that big of a deal. Give the man a slap on the wrist and move on from it. The perception of Cunningham before his arrest was that he should be signed back if the price is right. I don’t think that has changed.

C’mon yal…are we do deperate that anyone who scores over 15pts more than once is worth keeping? Has star potential? Is a solid guy to build around? God forbid Najera ever gets arrested…Jeez
the perception to who?
Maybe to the fans on this site that was gassed by a few performances while nobody was playing really. He did ok. So did Matt Carroll. You dont give players a slap on the wrist all the time. Especially players who you PERSONALLY gave an opportunity to play. He wasnt getting much tick in POR. Thats ungrateful. Its a distraction. We rebuilding. Who is DC? Really? If thats what you wanna do Daunte, fine. Where Im from alot of ppl would sell their soul for 700,000…sad but tru. So if he (unestablished young guy) wanna fuck up an opportunity like this, do it on somebody else time…
PS: He’s not that good to start with.
Well, for one Michael Jordan, so that pretty much overrules what any of us feel as fans.
I wouldn’t say we weren’t playing anybody either. We ran into and beat a few good teams, including the Celtics (which Cunningham played a key part in). I won’t get into player potential though because I already know how you feel about Henderson. And as Michael and Adam can tell you, I don’t really judge a player by the playing time he was receiving with a previous team. I mean, you’re acting like he got caught with a pound of weed or something and was planning on distributing it. It was a small bag which was more than likely for personal consumption. A lot of people would sell their soul for 700,000, but a lot of people don’t have the athletic ability that Cunningham does to make that point irrelevant. And when you say somebody fuckin up an opportunity, I wouldn’t say somebody that got pulled over and had a small bag of herb in the car. I would think of somebody that raped someone, abused a woman, shot at somebody or something like that.
PS: He may not be that good to you, but the kid has potential and could probably become a key player going forward. He’s only what, 24? He’s still growing and getting better as a player.

Not sure which Boston win Cunningham played a "key part" in.
On 3/25, he put up a whopping 4 and 5 with 5 fouls in 25 minutes.

Yep; that's the one.
In the 4th quarter alone, Dante had 2 steals, two blocks (including a monster stuff of a Garnett dunk attempt), a few rebounds, and the final made field goal for Charlotte that put us ahead for good.
If all that doesn’t amount to him being a key part of the win over Boston that day, then nothing will.

Yeah, and locked KG down.
But that’s not in the stat book so you don’t remember it.

Najera also locked down KG when we beat them at home
Just saying.

Do I really need to explain the difference between a 24 year old player getting better everyday
and a player like Najera, or are you just so intent on proving whatever point you’re trying to make that it’s irrelevant?

How do you know Cunningham is getting better every day? How do you know he's gotten any better at all?
Comparing his time with the Bobcats to his rookie season with Portland, many of his Per 36 stats (RB, blocks, steals, TO’s) were worse. His PER and WS/48 decreased as well. I don’t see any evidence that he’s gotten better.
I don’t really care one way or the other if the Bobcats bring DC back next year, but I find the infatuation with him to be just as silly as the previous hype for Brown. Both are fine as cheap end of the bench players, but neither helped the Bobcats win games.
Does that negate the fact that he played a key role in a win over the Celtics?

Certainly not, but you're referring to one game. I was just sarcastically making that point :)
I like Cunningham and if we can resign him on the cheap, I’m all for it. But his poor judgment in this situation is disappointing. I’m not getting into a political debate about whether or not marijuana should be legalized because, quite frankly, I don’t care. But it is against the law and it’s ignorant to knowingly break the law. Personally, I hate speed limits but I’m not going to go out and drive 100 mph just because I think it’s a stupid law.

So when I name Thornton he sucks?
But Cunningham has potential at 24? I dont get it sometimes. So if I steal something and no one is home, its ok? Nobody got hurt. Its not murder or rape. The NBA has a code of conduct. It also has a substance abuse policy. You follow those rules. It aint about a pound of weed. If I have a “Copkiller” bullet in my car and no gun, its still illegal brother. Not to mention WE ALL KNOW ITS ILLEGAL. like its not illegal to have a bb gun where i live so i mightve been in trouble for that one. If I come to your crib and you say no smoking in my house and I still smoke a short off a cigarrette u gon feel offended right? The point is, it dont matter how “small it is” its wrong. Im not judgin him as a person. This is minor as a person. But as a professional, its wrong period…
You getting me confused with somebody else on the site.
I never said a word about Thornton.

If the NBA's code of conduct was that serious,
then he would be suspended for his actions. We’ll see what happens.

they gon wait to see what happens on the legal side of things first
he might not need to get suspended. Its plenty of SFs in FA. There is a chance he might not get picked up. Hasnt done enought to really warrant a strong desire to be hired by any team. With the exception of CLT, every team has better SFs anyway.
Stupid laws need to be broken
We’d never had civil rights if people didn’t break the law. Alcohol prohibition would still be in effect if people didn’t break the law.
The benefits of legalizing and regulating marijuana have been so clearly pointed out time and time again, that only complete ignorance would disagree. Once the majority of people take these laws as a joke, then progress will be made.

lol i aint for it...
I cant see the benefits of it at all. Other than it would keep ppl who sell/use it from going to jail. In that case we should legalize theft. I mean it saves money. Its convenient. Alot of ppl do it anyway. It is known to be a meditation tool to most countries but they use it strictly for meditation. Not to chase a high. And I think we’ve already desecrated it holy uses in the US to the point of no return. All i see is a whole bunch of poor ppl who cant help buying it bc its all over and available. More cons than pros
What do you think is easier for kids to buy?
Alcohol from the local convenience store that is required by law to card people? Or pot from the drug dealer they see at school every day?
You know why the 1920’s mafias and all it’s crime and violence, doesn’t exist anymore? Because their main source of income, alcohol, can now be purchased legally. You know why Mexican gang violence is prevalent throughout the US? Because people who think like you are sticklers about a natural plant that doesn’t little more than make people calm and happy.
stay thirsty my friends
Who cares what its easier to buy?
You’re missing the point. You’re tryn to explain what crime is worse and blah blah…thats not the point. The point is its illegal. As a professional in a organization that has a “substance abuse policy” you cant have substance in your posession. Not to mention its illegal by law.

My point is it shouldn't be illegal
Which is why I could care less that DC had it. I care more that he violated his job’s policy that he agreed to, than a stupid federal law that he was forces into.

So we should legalize cocaine too?
I should be able to shoot my gun anytime of day, in any location as long as I point it UP. Statutory rape laws should be lowered to 14? If she say “yes” who am I hurting? I should be able to dump my trash wherever the hell I want to bc aint nobody gettin hurt? THATS NOT HOW IT WORKS. ITS A REASON its illegal. IDK where you live but I know the effects that legalizing marijuana would have on the city that I stay. Say goodbye to little amt of jobs we have in Rocky Mount. Say Hello to work related injuries, robberies, the crime rate period. Underaged smoking. Test Score decreases. We arent dealing with the same environments that we were in the 70’s and 60’s.
Marijuana's bad rep
comes from a smear campaign funded by rich, greedy men in the 1930’s because hemp was cheap to grow, naturally repels weeds and has few natural insect enemies. and therefore would put many rich dudes in the paper and textile out of business. That’s why it’s illegal today.
If legalized, money would stop going to drug cartels and start going into our own pockets. The government could reap benefits from the growth, distribution and taxation of hemp and marijuana. We wouldn’t have to chop down trees for paper or use nearly as many insecticides/weed repellents in the growth of our textiles. Not to mention the fact that the average person wouldn’t have to deal with possibly dangerous criminals anymore (drug dealers).
And this isn’t even dipping into the realm of medical benefits marijuana offers.
Hmm, seems like a lot of pros, and no cons to me. And this was my stoner post of the week :D

So uh, Bonnell,
You’ve had some days off now. No new Bobcats articles or blog posts, which is fine, we understand, because our season is over.
But uh, doesn’t this constitute a new article? Or at the very least a blog post? I mean, it’s new Bobcats news.
I see there's a bunch of pot heads on this blog
