Name Change? Yes or No?

via a4.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net

Hey RoF,

I am a long time reader but I don't normally post a lot.  I remember the possibility of Jordan changing the name about this time last year, right after he bought the team, so it sparked my interest again this year.  I go to school at LSU and in my marketing class my professor said, "MJ might be the best promoter of his brand ever, I love him to death for his wonderful marketing examples, except for now he owns and operates a forever losing franchise..."  This hurt obviously, but I feel like with Jordan at the helm, a new identity is soon to come with the roster overhaul, why wouldn't MJ and Co. want to give the team HIS identity from a visual perspective.  So, just for fun, and by no means do I hate the Bobcats logo or colors, I have created a couple of poor Paint versions of what I think the team's new logo could look like if they were to become the Charlotte Flight.

Star-divide

I wanted to somehow incorporate the Jumpman logo, even though it would be very difficult to use because of NIKE's ownership of the logo.  I used the Jumpman's arms as extensions to propellors.  The "C L T" at the tips of the propellors is Charlotte Douglas Int. Airports Abbreviation and "F L T" is the abbreviation of "Flight" on airport screens.  I kept with the 'Cats colors, with a little more usage of grey/silver.  Also, I felt like this logo also looks like the map of a airport terminal, thus incorporating the name Flight even more.  Tell me what you guys think.  Go BOBCATS!

no doubt...this is one of the easier decisions

Yeah Kevin, Bob Johnson originally owned the team so it became BOB with cats at the end- NBA2K11 or something like that. Actually Baseline had this flight idea for a while and quite frankly I love it. I would miss Bernie Bickerst…i mean Rufus dancing around tho. PS cool logo

So we hate on Bob Johnson for apparently naming the team after himself

but we’d be ok with using Michael Jordan’s ‘Jumpman’ in the team’s logo?

I wish the name change crap would just go away. The name isn’t going to make the team any better than slapping a Turbo sticker on a Yugo will make it go any faster.

I consider the Bobcats team we have now to be in its 1st REAL season. Bob Johnson poisoned the team, and Jordan is going to need a few years to run the team like it needs to be run. He has bad contracts to flush before he can advance. Johnson ran a team known as the Bargain Bobcats. He spent no money, then started approving trades for bad contracts and even signed some ridiculous contracts.

Charlotte Bobcats…let’s leave it alone and let’s give Jordan 4 more years.

Different Situation

I dont’ think people would care about bob supposedly naming the team after himself (which i don’t think he did) if he cared about producing a winning product on the floor, connecting the team with the community, etc. instead of making money. Jordan has shown, in only one year, that he is invested emotionally into this team and is competitively attached, so it wouldn’t bother people (from what ive read on different ’cats boards) if the team was somehow representative of him through the logo.

But, like i said, I like the bobcats name, colors, logos, mascot. This Charlotte Flight idea was just resurfaced on other websites.

by Andrew Dandison on Apr 6, 2011 12:57 PM EDT up reply actions

And flight also has connotations of fleeing

which is important for a city who already lost one NBA team.

While we are on the topic of dead horses by talking about changing our name yet again, why don’t we resume negotiations for Melo & CP3 and bring LB back so we can fire him again.

by Ft.Mill Bobcat on Apr 6, 2011 8:42 AM EDT reply actions

Bob Johnson had final say on the team name, but Bobcats wasn't entirely his doing

Input from the Charlotte community was an important factor in the development of the new team’s identity. The process tipped off with the aid of the Charlotte Regional Sports Commission, which netted over 1,250 team name suggestions in their "Help Name the Team" effort. Following focus groups with Charlotte-area residents and meetings with business and civic leaders, the team announced three nickname finalists in May 2003 – Charlotte Bobcats, Charlotte Dragons and Charlotte Flight. The community voted on the three names and the name Bobcats won.

Thank you

I don’t know why everyone seems to think Bob Johnson single-handedly named the team after himself.

Cool logo homey.

And with the roster overhaul, I’m starting to become more open to embracing a name change. I wouldn’t dare want the Hornets name back, even if they were contracted, but I think the Flight will be the one if i ever happens. I’m not sure of how much it would help and I don’t agree with a lot of people on it, but the majority of fans seem to associate Bobcats with losers, and a name change would probably do us some good. I mean, even the commentators on 2K11 were talking about the team’s potential name change. It couldn’t hurt having some new fancy uniforms and a new court. Sometimes, we do look like a college team with our colors. I’ve never complained, and still won’t, I love the Bobcats. But with he face of the franchise being gone now, you wonder if anything is worth holding on to.

to me its the stigma of "Bob"...

I’m sure the fans voted Bobcats outta appreciation of Johnson bringing us a new team. Wish I had a list of the names (so we could hav a lil fun with it)

Is the wright brothers our only claim to fame? I mean it is on the license plate and it almost became the name of our basketball team. Can anyone think of a better one because I can’t think of one.

If we changed to the Carolina Cougars it would connect with people from all over the carolinas, not just Charlotte

It might bring in more fans?
But really, if we have the opportunity to get the hornets name back I would take it.

by Pantherfan 2 on Apr 6, 2011 7:15 PM EDT reply actions

1st Choice

But I doubt it would happen. Who knows though, with the nba cba expiring and the hornets still owned by the league, if they decide to fold the hornets, maybe we can get a discount on the name/logo, etc.

Still my number 1 choice,

but I’m more open to a name change now than I’ve ever been. IDK what it is. I guess it’s just because I know Jordan wants to completely rebuild the team in his image and there’s nothing we can do about it. Number 1 choice, Bobcats. Number 2 choice, Flight. Number 3 choice, bring back the Hornets. Any other names shouldn’t even be in discussion right now.

I am in the "no name change" camp

I did hear one name if forced I would consider – “The Regulators” – but it kind of reminded me of Roller Derby. Our historic names – Cougars and Hornets would be on the short list.

by Ft.Mill Bobcat on Apr 7, 2011 6:42 PM EDT up reply actions

you didnt watch the hornets?

Man u missed some great consistent North Carolina basketball. We had some of the leagues toughest bigs. We had some great shooters and wingman. Baron Davis’ golden years. Man those were some good times. And I’m not even close to 30

by focuslja on Apr 7, 2011 7:04 PM EDT reply actions

I am more emotionally connected to hornets

I grew up going to games with my father, leaving my middle school baseball games early because he got tickets at work and racing down I85 to see them play. I remember my first game vs the Milwaukee Bucks a 128-122 victory in regulation..i could go on. I go to school at LSU, which is funny because now the hornets are in NO. They have butchered the colors, jerseys, court, everything. They have messed up the image of the hornets from what they were in charlotte so much, that coming back to charlotte would be so much like old times. FWIW, deep down I want the hornets back, even it isn’t going to happen.

I always wanted Ricky Davis to be good

He had all the intangibles. He could hit the 3. He could drive to the basket, rebound and defend. One of those players that never got his just due because of his attitude.

Man we used to have some crazy squads

This is probably y i give the current Cats such a hard time. I look at them as the “offshoot” of the Hornets. The Hornets came in the league 89 i wanna say with another team (I wanna say the magic or the Heat, cant remember)…to instant sucess. Good draft picks. Good FA pickups. Always in the playoffs. Back when you didnt need a “star” to be good. The players BECAME stars. (I think the one year in college rule ruined the talent pool for the NBA).

by focuslja on Apr 8, 2011 10:20 AM EDT up reply actions

Gives me the nostalgia for my Sacramento Kings days lol.

Those were definitely the good, competitive times. Kobe and Shaq ruined it. This is also why I’m rooting for Philly, Portland, and Denver to make the upsets in the upcoming playoffs. They kinda represent the “classic” NBA teams.

This is the role he shouldve had from the jump. Our teams were building around him (probably bc he was a fan favorite)…and that just wasnt the way to go. He is a awesome player nonetheless. I would love to see Denver vs Chicago or Portland vs Philly…

I read the news about him selling the ring. Adam Morrison should follow his lead. Or just give it to charity of something. Lol.
