Playoffs? Lottery?
Over the past month or so, I've been trying to convince Ben that the Charlotte Bobcats are better off making the playoffs this season than they are admitting defeat and shooting for the lottery. It took some time, but I won him over a couple of weeks ago. Why, do you ask? There are a variety of reasons.
It's obvious that Michael's trying to blow the team up. He sent the second last original Bobcat (and best Bobcat yet) to Portland, leaving Matt Carroll as the last man standing. I'm as shocked as you are. MJ also tried to get a fair deal for Stephen Jackson (most notably with Dallas), but came up short. Cool. So we understand that the team's rebuilding, right? So the Bobcats should just tank, right? Get a better draft pick? Not quite.
Before I delve into detail, you should know that this entire post is under the assumption that there will be a lengthy lockout next season. In any other year, I'd be content with any team in this situation to sit back and let the chips fall where they may. However, because of the lockout, a lot of things change.
Let's do this.
This may be the first time that we can say there's a weak draft coming up and actually mean it. Expect the majority of the top 5, and maybe top 10 prospects to enter the draft. Their stock is good and the money they get will likely be good after the CBA is settled. Anything after that, though? Oh boy. With so much uncertainty regarding length and pay scale of the "new and improved" rookie contracts, most kids will stay in school for another year and assess their options later.
The Bobcats with the way they're playing would probably get a pick between 8 and 16. That area is far too gray to sabotage the remnants of the season. Bryan Colangelo of the Toronto Raptors traded Miami's pick (26-30) to Chicago for James Johnson (I like him, but if you said "who?" I've made my point). He said that Miami's pick will net a player with the talent level of a late second rounder in any other draft. I agree.
The playoffs are the ultimate tool in player evaluation. Some players flourish and break out under pressure (remember Dwyane Wade in '04 and '05? Tony Parker in '02?), while others crumble beneath it. The Bobcats will figure out which of their young players are keepers, and which ones are expendable. D.J. Augustin was destroyed by the playoffs last year, shooting 33% from the field and 29% from 3. Conversely, Gerald Wallace was monstrous, arguably better than he was in the regular season. Who can take their game to another level this year?
Also, I really hate to bring this up, but with the recent chatter about contraction being a possibility (albeit unlikely), the playoffs are a great way to show that the Charlotte Bobcats are a team that deserves to stay. Charlotte is currently ranked 21st in terms of attendance this year with an average of 15, 991 people showing up to each home game. Not a bad mark, but not good either. The Bobcats also lost approximately $20 million last season, and are projected to lose even more this year. Gerald Wallace is gone, and without a solid foundation for the future, things only look to get worse financially.
Which brings me to my final point: the playoffs make money. I've tried to understand the system for years, but it's no easy feat. What I do understand is that the players are "awarded" money outside of their contracts for each playoff game they appear in, as do their teams. The amount of money rises with each round (let's be honest, the Bobcats probably wont make it out of the first round if they get there), and that's why many teams strive for deep playoff runs without winning it all despite being over the cap. I won't point fingers, but we know who they are.
Look, it's not the end of the world if the Bobcats don't make the playoffs, and it's not the grand prize if they do. But when weighing the pros and cons of the situation, the playoffs look like the best option for the team. The idea that they're thinking of shutting down Jax for the season infuriates me. Why admit defeat? The goal is in reach. Let's get some consistency and grow some balls!
Thoughts?

From the perspective of a season ticket holder
I definitely want the team to make the playoffs or at least stay in the hunt until the very end. Otherwise, these last few weeks become a waste of time and money. Having said that, if they miss the playoffs, it doesn’t turn out poorly either. It’s a “can’t lose” proposition as long as the Cats give good effort from here on out.
And one other side note, I don’t consider Matt Carroll an original Bobcat. He was signed from the D-League midway through the first year, then traded away to Dallas, and then brought back last year.

I promise you, and I've only read half of this article so far,
that I was going to write one about all the reasons we need to make the playoffs, using Chicago and Oklahoma City’s rise as one reason. Another reason was player evaluation. Making the playoffs and getting swept last year let us know what our biggest weaknesses were and what we needed to improve on. The playoffs are the reason we didn’t commit to Felton this off-season. Whether that was a mistake or not is debatable, but it sure made it a lot easier to say goodbye to him.
Off to read the rest.

But yeah,
I think it’s absolutely essential for the Cats to make the playoffs now that we’ve come this far. We’ve got about 10 games left and are in the hunt for a spot. Tanking now makes absolutely no sense at all. Examining the standings also shows that tanking really wouldn’t benefit much anyway because some of these teams just have no shot at all of catching up to us and improving our draft positioning. We really need this year to see exactly what Augustin, Henderson, Tyrus, Cunningham, and White can do. A huge part of being a great player in the NBA is playing with confidence. What better way to get that than by stealing a road game in Chicago? That’s the match-up we would want anyway. I think it’ll give Henderson and D.J. in particular a chance to prove if they are the cornerstones we need or role players.

Last year Orlando was a bad playoff match-up for us
Even with our current Bobcat line-up there is no reason that we can not win a game or two against Boston or Chicago if we make the playoffs. We have beat both twice this year. When we win one playoff game, we can keep up our hopes for the very improbable advancement to the next round.
Just happy we don’t have to play Indiana again this year. Seems like other teams don’t have that concern. Hopefully Detroit won’t on Wednesday.

Regular season is MILES different from the playoffs.
The great teams flip the switch. With this team, there isn’t much of a switch left to be flipped.

The switch, but Chicago really isn’t that great to me. They are good, no doubt, but again, we have beat them this year and I don’t see why we can’t steal a game or two. Last years playoff got yall thinking that the team is worthless when it comes to the postseason. Not true. We were the only team swept in the first round thanks to a bad match up and a dumb game plan of leaving all shooters open. These are all grown men out here. They can win some games if they want it bad enough.

If they want it bad enough
Chicago has superior starters at four of five positions, a much deeper bench and plays the best defense in the league. Charlotte doesn’t compare in any aspect of the game. Chicago should sweep either Charlotte or Indiana unless they take them too lightly.

Bogans and Brewer
Are not superior to Henderson and Deng is not superior to Jackson, in any way whatsoever. As far as their bench, you only say that because they have a better record. If we had their bench and they had ours, it’d be a different story. Livingston, Tyrus, DJ white, Dante Cunningham, I mean who on Chicago’s bench is that good? Taj Gibson? Please. He is good, but they are not superior on the bench. Like I say, you guys have such a sour taste in your mouth from last year that even simple things seem impossible. Funny how that now that Chicago is winning they are all of the sudden great. Outside of Boozer, they didn’t have one significant upgrade and are a number 1 seed. That’s cool though. No one was giving the bulls a shot to beat Cleveland in a game last year, but they played hard, did, added some pieces and are now a top team. It’s not nearly as impossible as some are making it out to be.

Kyle Korver is a great shooter to have.
But that’s his only claim to fame. Matt Carroll is our version of him. Sure, Kyle is the better player, but he is not better to the point of dominating anybody or even being good enough to depend on on a nightly basis. No one is saying we are better than Chicago. The records speak for themselves. What I am saying is that I’d bet any replaceable item in my possession that if we got to the playoffs, we wouldn’t be swept. Not by Chicago. Miami and Boston, sure. But not Chicago.

Brewer is more experienced...has a better jumper and plays good perimeter D.
does it have to be hating bc I realize we dont have a top 20 SG in the league? be serious. u probably think Hendo is better than every SG not named Wade/Kobe.
I just don't understand what else Henderson has to do to prove himself to you.
He’s proven to be VERY consistent with his mid-range jumper, he plays lock down defense, and he can dunk on anybody in the game. That’s not even to mention how clutch he was against Philadelphia and Milwaukee in the closing minutes of those games, using basically the same shot 5 times to kill those teams. Henderson’s PPG averages aren’t that great, but keep in mind that Larry still wasn’t playing him while he was here. I don’t know where you got Kobe and Wade from, Hendo isn’t better than them. But he’s definitely a top 20 SG in the league and he’s only getting better.
SG’s better than Hendo?
Kobe, Wade, Joe Johnson, Ginobili, Ray Allen, Tyreke Evans, Eric Gordon, Monta Ellis, Kevin Martin, and that’s probably it (though I may have missed a few people). The Jason Richardson’s, John Salmon’s, and OJ Mayo’s of the world are better scorers than Henderson, but better players?

Henderson will need to pick up his scoring if we are to consider him a franchise cornerstone,
but I think he can with the more time he spends on the court and the more confidence he grows. He shoots a VERY good percentage and I’m sure the will drop once he starts taking more shots, but he has room for error in that department.

I don't disagree...
But I would rather go out and get a guy who is more of a 3/4/5 where we are reasonably unsettled long-term. Henderson and Augustin are a pair of young kids just getting their mojo, and displacing them in their roles as starters would not be good for their growth and development.

unless they have a meltdown of some sort. Noone can match up with Granger. Deng is good defensively (thanks to Coach K) but he cant stop a hot Granger. Darren Collison is no where close to Rose but when he comes to play (like he did the other night) he will be hard to stop. I say 5 or 6gms

Inferior talent, sure. Absent? Hell no. I wouldn’t give us a snowball chance in hell of stealing one from Boston or Miami at this point, but Chicago is a different story compared to those teams. They are nowhere near as talented as them but they play great defense and have players that can take over on offense if needed. We can beat those guys a game or two, especially if Boris shows up and Jax gets healthy.

Miami has 3 talented players period. (I’ll give them Bibby)…Chicago has that in their starting lineup. Not to Mention Gibson and Korver. That Makes 7 talented players. Boston on the other hand might have the Most talent second to Dallas and SA
Miami has three half of fame caliber players, two shoe ins.
Chicago has one. And just because they haven’t been producing like they should for whatever reasons this year, Mike Miller, Haslem, Bibby, and Zydrunas are all talented players.

He is a good role player at this point, but no one would have trouble with him.starting if their starter went down. I think his limitations at this point are more about injuries and age, more than skill.

i doubt CLE or CLT would let Z start...
He is definately NOT what we need from a center. He is a shooter mostly and he cant bang down low with the beast. Say what u want about Kwame but he has the size to cause problems with alot of bigs. We dont need a Center that spends most of his time outside the paint. I would rather have Dampier than Z at this point
I think he would start here
Some nights. I mean, its not as much about being a starter that’s important anyway. Z’s minutes at this point in his career will always handled carefully simply because of the fact that he is a 7’3 old guy with a history of injuries. However, he’s nobody’s bench warmer and would be getting a fair share of minutes on anybody’s team. I understand your dislike of his game because his skill set isn’t that of a prototype center, but he would probably come in and be our most consistent inside threat.

I mean, he’s better than we’ve currently got. As noted below, he’d definitely help in Cleveland. Detroit probably wants to develop Greg Monroe, but Z’s better; same is true of Spencer Hawes in Philly and Robin Lopez in Phoenix. Minnesota’s starting Darko. Want a contender? How about Boston? Nenad Krstic? Really? And San Antonio might be worse. What is Antonio McDyess at this point, 55? Hell, he’d probably start over Camby in Portland.

lemme break that down.
Spencer Hawes is better than Z. Z could shoot but even that has diminished. Darko’s numbers this year arent bad. I think his past precedes him also. But he has developed and I would take him over Z. We all know Y Kristic is starting. It has nothing to do with being a good big. Its because everyone else was hurt. No way he starts over Camby. Camby is a rebounding dynamo. He also swats alot of shots. And McDyess is way better than Z. He still gets nasty on the boards. He can guard a perimeter PF. He can knock down the long and midrange jumpers CONSISTENTLY.
Sorry, but the stats tell a different story.
Ilgauskas is averaging 11-9 and 2 blocks a game on 51% shooting per 36, or about what he’d play as a starter. Hawes picks up to a whopping 12-10 on 48% shooting with only 1.5 blocks. For a guy much higher in Philly’s scoring heirarchy (as you’ve so perpetually bitched about with Diaw), that’s not impressive at all. Camby, rebounding dynamo that he is, is a black hole on offense. For a team ranked 23rd in scoring, they could use Ilgauskas’ offensive ability. As to all those blocks he gets, he’s at 2.2 per 36. That’s a whopping 10% better than Ilgauskas. McDyess, nasty on the boards though he may be, gets a whole one extra board per 36 than Ilgauskas, but lags behind a full block and a point. Ilgauskas would be the guy if we’re going by production, bud.

I voted for "nothing else is acceptable" before even reading after the jump.
I actually don’t believe that nothing else is acceptable (as long as the team plays their best to close out the season, I’m good), but it’s the closest to how I feel.
Cats' Magic number: 9
Games remaining: 10
Jim Mora: "Playoffs?! Don't talk about...playoffs? You kiddin' me?"
Same for me
Following these blogs:
http://www.rufusonfire.com, http://tradestreetpost.com, http://www.ridiculousupside.com, http://www.inhistoric.com
I've always felt we should continue pushing for the playoffs,
even when my confidence took a nose dive after the trade deadline. There’s no doubt our chances took a hit with Wallace and Nazr gone. Add in the recent injury problems we’ve been facing, and that pretty much explains why we’re something like 5-16 after the deadline.
But looking at where we’re at today, with the playoffs still possible (no one said easy, though), I mean, as a player, wouldn’t you want to win and earn a playoff berth? I mean, I certainly would. That’s what the team’s original goal was the start of the season. MJ sent a clear signal with the trade at the direction he’s going in, but despite that, we still have playoff chances. It’s really a win-win for MJ.
I’ll be satisfied as long as the team continues to put forth good effort. Jax, while perhaps not 100% well, is certainly putting his heart into it.
But you betcha I voted that “nothing else is acceptable”
Let me ask you this.
What does making the playoffs do for us? If we get knocked out of the playoffs in the first round, what was the point in making the playoffs? If we have pick 15, that is a far cry from pick number 10. Even if it is a miniscule chance, what if we landed the number one pick by chance? We could not do that making the playoffs. Picks 1-13 are remarkably better than picks 15 on. Making the playoffs gives us no added value, a lottery pick will. We need to do our best OKC impersonation, and load up with lottery picks, and lucky late picks (See: Serge Ibaka). We need to play this rebuilding process very smart, because if we screw this up, we may not have the Bobcats in Charlotte much longer.

not really
with a weak draft (like this one) there prolly wont be much difference btw 5 and the rest. the number of the pick really doesnt (and never has) prove who is “Remarkably better”…(Thabeet, Jordan Hill, Flynn {top 10}…(Holiday, Lawson. Beaubois,Tony Douglas {bottom 10})
I think...
Either way, if we make the playoffs, hopefully we can make it as interesting as possible! If it’s against the Bulls, I think we’ll win at least a couple of games out of the series, and not get swept. Now , if we don’t make the playoffs, and we end up in the lottery picking late and with the other pick, I wouldn’t be mad about it. I saw alot of good players during this NCAA tournament this year, that I think plays with chips on their shoulders and would possibly carry that same attitude in the NBA with alot to prove! Now, some of these guys are at smaller schools, and this is where I lose trust with the front office’s ability to grade talent. We have to do our homework and evaluate the lesser talent coming out this year, that are tough guys, that can flat out ball! Like that Faried guy for Morehead, I think he could have a decent career as a power foward for us, especially working with Oakley, he could be our young Ben Wallace or even better! So regardless of where we pick in this supposedly weak draft , it might not be to weak at all, we just have to do a better job of evaluating the talent, and that’s not always at a bigtime school or even in America! We need to look at some overseas talent too! It helps!
jp:
If Sean May and Adam Morrison have taught us nothing, it’s that college production and ability don’t always translate to successful NBA careers. To get a guy you know can make an impact quickly in anything but a deep bench role, you’re probably going to have to draft early.

He wanted us in the lottery, But the way Silas empowered these players to be the best they can be there’s no quit in this team. I thought we were done last week, But were finding ways to win. With what little we have to play with it looks like were capable of winning one or two games from the Bulls if were healthy and show up to kick some a$$. I’ll take whatever happens playoffs or not because MJ tried to send us to the lottery. This off season will be very interesting for our franchise.

Frankly, I don't think it matters.
To be honest, I don’t think this team as it’s currently constructed is capable of making the playoffs, so I think the question of tanking or not is irrelevant. If we’re being realistic about the way Indy has been playing (they upset Boston tonight), we need a 6-3 stretch to even have a decent shot (remember, it’s two games to make up with the tiebreaker in Indy’s hand), and it would take 7-2 run to control our own fate. Even before Gerald got gone, did we have a run that good all year? Hell, let’s break down the games left:
*vs. CLE/WAS-We should be able to count on these at TWC, but these Bobbies are also a team that will punt ‘em against the NJs and Indys of the world even at home. Still, I’ll give us a pair of Ws.
*2 vs. Orlando (1 away, 1 home)-It works in our favor that Orlando is virtually locked in to the #4 seed, so they won’t have a real need to win these games. Still, we’re 0-2 so far against them, and the roadie wasn’t even close. We could easily lose both these games, but let’s hope they play inspired at home and pull it out. Note, however, that that home game is the second of a back-to-back. That’s 3 wins now.
*@CLE-This will be their first home game in a week, and it’s one of the two winnable games left on their home schedule (us and Washington in their finale) to put a decent ending on what’s been a miserable season. Still, this is a game we should be able to take. 4-1
*@MIA-No chance in hell, and we almost certainly can’t even hope they will have shut it down, because they have a home game against Boston two days later. 4-2
*vs. DET-Better take this one, and I feel pretty confident we can, in that they’re a team on the way down and we’ve won our last two against them by a combined 15 (including a 10-point win in Detroit.) Only potential drawback is the Sunday 6:00 start time, which might lead to a flat crowd. That situation is also true of the Washington game in Charlotte. 5-2
*@NJ-Weird team. They’ve lost six of seven, including 1-4 in their last five without Deron Williams. He obviously changes that team greatly, and will reportedly play Wednesday in an effort to see whether he can gut his way through the end of NJ’s season. This game will also be NJ’s home finale, and I’m sure the club would like to end things on a good note if they get they chance. If he’s still playing by then, I’d say this is a likely loss. 5-3
*vs. ATL-Atlanta is another team almost certain to be locked into their current spot in the standings (#5), so they’ll have a chance to rest guys if they want, but because they’re pretty young, I don’t see guys getting rest just to get rest here, particularly in the last game of the year. They do have some injury concerns with Joe Smith and Horford playing through some nagging stuff and Joe Johnson currently listed as day-to-day with a sprained thumb sustained in their last game. Bottom line, though, if this game is for the playoffs, the Bobcats better pull this one out at home. 6-3
So, I actually talked myself into a better record than I’d imagine, but here’s the problem: that record relies on the Bobcats winning the games they should, which we all know has at times not been their strong suit. That would also require Indy to go no better than 3-4 the rest of the way against a schedule that includes three of the teams I’d count as reasonably sure wins in DET, MIL, and WAS. If they won those and stole one against Atlanta or New York with those teams likely locked in by then, 6-3 wouldn’t be good enough and the odds would get even longer.
When it comes to the draft, I don’t think that matters either. As many have said, the difference between 8 and 15 might not be much, and the odds are pretty slim you’re moving up from that range anyway.

Damn, so one game makes a season?
In case you forgot, we beat the same damn Celtics last week too. Your pessimism glasses are blinding you my friend. That’s fine though. We are still in the race for the number 8 spot while trading away our best player. Who did Indy trade at the deadline? Oh, that’s right, nobody. Yet they are still just as terrible as we are. No.
I feel like they’re not capable of it because they’re simply not good enough to go 6-2 the rest of the way, which is what it’s likely to take. Are there six winnable games left of the eight remaining? Sure there are. But if your record was based on the games you should win, we wouldn’t be talking about us needing that kind of stretch just to finish three games short of .500. One of the unfortunate qualities of this team is its inexplicable propensity to boot games they have no business losing.

I believe
If Mjs soul purpose was to miss the playoffs then Jax would be a maverick right now. Look, we are not going to have a top 5 pick either way so its ok to chill on the tanking talk. It’s way too late for that anyway. Appreciate the fact that we can at least be a perennial playoff contender even though we supposedly have one of the weakest rosters in the NBA. Trust me when I say the youngsters growth in the playoffs will prove to be a lot more valuable than moving up spots to get a slightly better role player. If we get to that point where we think a player can come in and be a franchise changer, we can package the picks and move up.

If the Mavs wanted Jax, then he'd be a Maverick
They found a cheaper alternatives in Peja and Brewer.
So youre saying they can duplicate Jackson's output?
Regardless of if we or Dallas were the team that pulled out of the trade, I stand convinced that out of all the 29 other NBA teams, one would give up an expiring contract for a player who is capable of exploding for 40 any night. Everyone was on here talking about how crash had no value in trades, but we ended up getting 2 first round picks, a young talent, and a fan favorite/expiring contract for him. An expiring deal for Jax is a bad deal for us, and that’s the reason he is still a Bobcat.
Q. What Do You Tell A Girl With Two Black Eyes?

I'm saying there's not much of a market for Jackson
Dallas considered him and decided to pass. Peja and Brewer were cheaper, required less commitment and came with less baggage. Remember even the Bobcats got rid of a bad contract (Vlad) when they traded for Jackson, and there wasn’t competition for him then either. Now he’s a little older and more expensive.
Vlad's
Deal expires this year. Wasn’t that bad of a contract. I agree that the market for Jackson isn’t high, but I refuse to believe that someone wouldn’t trade an expiring deal for him. And even if they refused to, to hell with them. I’d rather have Jax anyway. Put it like this, if Jordans intentions were to miss the playoffs, Jax would be taking this time to heal instead of playing through his injury. I know Jordan is ready to rebuild, but I don’t think he purposely wants to miss the playoffs. I feel like if that’s the case, Jax wouldn’t be here, Diaw wouldn’t be here, or Pryzbilla would have been bought out. The fact they are all still on the roster makes me feel as though Jordan would still rather make the postseason than miss it, but he knows there are benefits to both results.

there are some hard decisions...
the PF situation is one. Where do we go from here? Diaw/Tyrus are both fairly young and have (ridiculous contracts)…so this question shall be answered alot better if we DO make the playoffs. The PG situation is another. Livingston/Augustin are both “pretty pieces” for other teams. (esp in a package)…I actually like the combo & w/ Temple having solid play, it puts us further in a pickle. We have a few guys that arent really detrimental to the team (and are really expendable)…so making the playoffs and seein the gameplay of the players under pressure is a better guage of who’s WORTH keeping and taking a risk on. Plus it helps us decide where our problem areas are. In my opinion (which most of you hate)…in order to build a team, u need a PLAYER to build around. and then you put pieces around that player to maximize the effectiveness. If we can find out who we are keeping/starting, we might can grab a player in FA that can mesh well with whatever kind of offense put into place. (this depends on the type of PG mostly and the type of roles espected for each team)…
Exactly.
The only thing you and I ever disagreed on was if Mayo or Henderson is a better player and carmelo compared to the other stars. Everything else we agree on.

We’re definitely suffering without Theo Ratliff, who has contributed exactly 2 points and 13 rebounds…ALL YEAR! As to the word ‘perennial,’ the definition is “lasting for an indefinitely long time; enduring.” Two years is hardly “indefinite” or “enduring.” And if you’re scraping in during those two years with a combined record likely to be under .500, you’re not a “contender.” You’re a crappy team that’s lucky your conference is abysmal.

Unfortunately (or fortunately depending on your POV), playoff contender and crappy team are pretty much the same thing in the Eastern Conference. Only the really awful teams aren’t EC playoff contenders. But based on Jordan’s statements about building a championship contender, it looks like the Bobcats are striving to join the ranks of the truly awful (i.e. rebuilding teams) soon.
Which is perfectly fine with me.

Long range, tearing down LB’s squad and rebuilding was inevitable. But it’s also sad to watch, especially when the face of the franchise is traded away for low value picks and expiring contracts. I’d be more accepting if Charlotte had real management as opposed to MJ and friends.
I dont think we got a bad deal fot Crash.
Not too many players outside of the elite can produce that kind of return in a trade package. I’ve been impressed with Mjs moves and eye for young talent (cunningham, white) during his ownership reign.

I'm sure they did
But Portland knew that MJ was desperate. And that’s why the trade didn’t go down until the last minute. Can anyone name the last time a team traded the face of its franchise for so little?
Crash was the face of the franchise,
but he’s no LeBron. You see that people have already gotten over him being dealt. I was/am one of his biggest fans it’s already yesterday’s news. You can’t build your franchise around a player like Crash. He’s a complimentary piece. And like I say, we got a decent deal for what in reality is a 28 year old, 1 time All-Star with multiple concussions and a high injury rate. Not to take anything away from Crash, but it was a smart move. New Orleans is on the verge of missing the playoffs if Houston and Memphis can win some games, so that could eventually turn into a lottery pick.

Why was it a smart deal?
The odds are against either of the draft picks amounting to anything since they’ll both be late 1st round picks. And the odds are really against NO missing the playoffs – check the standings.
So the Bobcats got a bunch of nothing for Wallace. The trade only makes sense from one perspective – reducing red ink. Anyone who says otherwise is misinformed. MJ sold our cow for a couple of magic beans because he didn’t want to feed it any more.
New Orleans is one game ahead of Memphis and three ahead of the Rockets.
And they’ve lost David West for the season. The odds aren’t that great as you make them seem. I’ve checked the standings.
They either way, New Orleans won’t finish as a top 10 team in the NBA, so the “late picks” you’re talking about will actually be mid round picks. Portland’s pick depends on what they do next year. Considering that Brandon Roy is almost done, the odds get higher that they could turn into a lottery team.
So how is it a bad trade? 2 first round picks, an expiring contract/serviceable big man, and a young talent who has already shown plenty of promise in Charlotte. What do you expect for someone of Crash’s stature? 5 first round picks?

maybe a mid first rounder and a Batum or Matthews lol. I think Roy is far from finished, He has the potential to take over as a top SG after Kobe hangs it up. Maybe not so much since the injury but he’ll still be just as good as a Joe Johnson for years to come. Even if Roy isnt that good from here on out, The Blazers got a CRAZY squad and if they ever get a big man, its a rap…
They already got their big man.
Greg Oden. Just has the same problem as Roy. I’m convinced they will be a championship team had the injury bug not bit them. Matthews and Batum weren’t real high picks either. Batum was the 25th pick of his draft, and Matthews was undrafted entirely (if I can remember correctly). All it takes is a good eye for talent and the rest will come. The reason I have more faith in MJ in this draft is because of the production of White and Cunningham in limited time. I feel like if he can get diamonds in the rough like those as throw ins to a trade, he can draft better too. Especially without the pressure of having a top 5 pick.

Batum is a beast. Idc what you say, and we are not talkin about his Rookie season. we are talkin about now. We are talking about his ability to go to the basket. We are talking about his ability to knockdown long range shots. We are talking about his ability to defend out on the perimeter (there’s no numbers for that)…we are talking about how young/effective he is already…
But we were.
What a draft pick might do in the 2013 season doesn’t really matter. Ask Golden State what a great move it was to trade Jason Richardson based on what Brandan Wright might be doing right now.

"So many opportunities?"
There are no opportunities if nobody wants to play in Charlotte. And given that the biggest FA acquisition in team history has been, umm…Brevin Knight? I’d say we’re hard up for people considering Charlotte a market destination.

Absolutely.
Nothing we received is anything close to a guaranteed asset even in the mid-term outside of the cap relief from Przybilla’s expiring contract. Cunningham has proven nothing more than the ability to contribute as a deep bench reserve, and those draft picks are likely to do little more than that for several years at least.

That's one asset and three THEORETICAL ones.
Looking at the position of those picks and the track record of our front office with much higher selections to work with, you might as well chalk at least one of those picks up as a bust (see Ajinca, Alexis; May, Sean, etc.), and the other pick would probably be a “success” to be a 4 and 3 “competent role player” (see: bench player, deep) like Derrick Brown was and Dante Cunningham is.

We don’t have a great track record with draft picks, but I think Jordan will be better this time around. And our two primary cornerstones st this point, dj and Hendo were drafted by us. It all depends on how we use them. Only time will tell. And Pryzbilla was an asset before his knee gave out.

And Przybilla would have been exactly the same kind of “asset” I talked about: a 15 MPG, 4-3 kind of contributor. i.e.: nothing.

5 spots was “significant”, but whatever. So you’re saying that Pryzbilla would have to come in and duplicate Crashes production for it to be a fair trade? I'm saying he would have to come in and provide at least league-average production.
Minimal production doesn’t matter. How much better of a package? I would have looked for a pick in the lottery or higher or player with proven success in the NBA, even for only short periods. Two picks from year-in, year-out playoff teams are not those picks and Dante Cunningham is not that player.

esp for the production of Wallace. I think it would only be a good trade if we decide to go get a productive player in a great FA pool…instead of getting someone from a extremely weak draft
It all depends on what we do with the picks.
Crash came to us in an expansion draft. Turning a player that you basically got for free for all of that is pretty decent. The next Gerald Wallace is out there. And judging bywhite and Cunninghams production in their limited time here, we may already have them

They currently sit at a 99% mathematical chance of making it. If a 1% chance is “on the verge” of doing anything, I ought to be playing the lottery a hell of a lot more often. If they go winless the rest of the year—unlikely, given their 6-4 record in their last 10, including 2-1 since West’s injury—they STILL have a 36% chance of making it, or better than we do right now if we go 5-3!

Crash for a pick in THIS draft is hardly enough
28 is not old. even for basketball standards. we got a 24yr old with a high injury rate that is overpaid. I cant see how any bobcats fan is over Crash being traded. No offense. I hate the defeatist attitude i’ve been seeing lately from alot of cats fans. the lottery is no big deal at all. esp this year. 2015… we might make a seed higher that 7 or 8…get your popcorn
28 isn't old, but when you've already had like 3 or 4 concussions,
play with a reckless abandon, and was used to playing close to 40 minutes every night for us, then the risks associated with him goes WAY up. Who is this overpaid 24 year old you are speaking of? The lottery this year may not be a big deal, but when is the lottery ever a big deal? It’s always been top 5 picks and then whoever else comes after. Look at some of the picks over the years from late in the draft. There is TALENT there, it just depends on if MJ can spot them. Kemba Walker, Jimmer Fredette, all kind of players will fall to the lottery this year. Either way, push comes to shove, the picks can still be traded for a better player or a higher pick. Nothing is set in stone. Teams go GAGA over draft picks. You think every pick involved in the Melo and Derron Williams deals were lottery picks? Some of those were late round picks.

THATS OUR COACHES fault. for waisting 45mil on a player when u couldve got a 2 decent guys (1 to relieve Wallace/JAX {Terrence Williams} and a decent rebounding PF (Reggie Evans or Amir Johnson who we gave away)
Lol. Stromile Swift? You gonna disrepsect Tyrus like that.
You’re right though, until he gets his head on straight, it may have been a bad move. But worst case scenario, I think we can extract a Wallace like deal for Tyrus if a playoff contending team wants that added athleticism next year. At the very least, I know we can trade him away anytime for an expiring deal to get rid of that “mistake”, if that is what it turns out to be.

Definitely!
Some team will absolutely fall all over themselves to acquire an injury-prone bench forward who has had attitude problems for most of his career when he can’t even stay healthy as a 22 MPG player. That’s what he’s averaged over the last two years (with only five starts total in that time), and at maximum, he’ll have played 103 games in that time. That is 51.5 games a year, and his career number won’t be much better, at 65.6 games a year. That’s an average of 20% of the season missed. No market, dude.

No, phoenix
Has really been the only team known to consistently do that and even they stopped when they seen it was time to rebuild. And there is a difference between picking 25-30 and 16-24. Obviously, you think its all the same though.

I dont think we got a bad deal fot Crash.
Not too many players outside of the elite can produce that kind of return in a trade package. I’ve been impressed with Mjs moves and eye for young talent (cunningham, white) during his ownership reign.

Striving to join the ranks?
We are already in rebuilding mode. The fact we are still in the chase despite that is an added bonus.

we have been rebuilding for 7yrs now
one yr in the playoffs doesnt signify the end of rebuilding
Technically, I think it means we're still "building"

A lot of teams have been rebuilding for a long time.
I think we came close to having a set roster last year, but the ownership change brought an inevitable breakup of our first playoff team. I think Jordan knows what he wants to achieve and how he wants to get there, we just gotta give him time to undo Bob Johnson’s moves and see where he can take us. I like his strategy thus far. Just gotta see how it all turns out.

OK, so our roster was nearly set through Johnson’s leadership, but Jordan needed to undo those moves? Nice logic.

Yes. It damn near was set.
I never said they were a championship team so stop trying to just run ya mouth, I said SET. As in, had a foundation and a team with few holes that just wasn’t producing for whatever reason. Felton, Richardson, Wallace, and okafor was a very solid core in terms of talent.

yep i agree...
but two ego maniacs…LB and MJ both wanted the credit for making the team a playoff team. So with two different directions in mind, destroyed arguably the best roster we had. not only that but we ended up with terrible contracts…when that money couldve been used in Moderation for just one piece. PF or Center and we would be just as good if not better than we were last year. Now we must do it over bc last years team was made just to make it to the playoffs ONCE..but not consistenly for years to come…
Theo Ratliff played a WAY bigger
Role for us than he did the Lakers. His stats this year are totally irrelevant. You know better than that. I also noticed how you tried to get away from the growth concept by only focusing on ratliff and none of the other players we lost. And perennial is getting there year after year. To become one, you have to get there at least two right? You have to start somewhere (duh). Seeding is irrelevant because notice I said perennial playoff contender, not championship contender.

i know a few ways we can get there consistenly b4 2015
it would be productive and efficient and pretty cheap…but i would just be called a hater
I actually think Jordan
is going to use your strategy. Cunningham and White are kind of the players you’re aiming for. Young, cheap guys that didn’t get too much PT with their teams, but have a lot of hidden potential. Bring on Terrence Williams to Charlotte.

Again, you're making my point for me.

Yes, I watched as
We tried to double Howard every damn play and left shooters open to kill us. Our team was a lot better than they performed. I blame.it on Larry brown for the dumbass game plan and not giving Henderson and DJ the opportunities they deserved. That’s why we were swept. And Orlando did the same shit to Atlanta, even worse. But no one mentions that part.

The Bulls made it in as an 8th seed last year (yes, worse than us)
and are now a number 1 seed. They “grew” because their young players got playing time. Our team depended on veterans to get us there and through it. They could’ve gained valuable experience had Larry not been coach.

No, they grew because they added an All-Star and they have FAR better young frontend talent.

Boozer missed how many games this year?
Noah missed how many games this year? Yes, that far better front end talent and their All Star acquisition are the reason they are the top.team in the east.

they got rid of what didnt work (Tyrus ect)
and made the steps needed to make the team better in the offseason. they have a lineup full of young yet experienced/productive players. someone had suggested that the bobcats do that…cant remember who it was
Lol, that seems to be the blueprint for success at the moment.
Let’s tank and get Kyrie and sign Zach Randolph. We’ll be championship caliber in no time.

The Bulls were a ready made team just waiting for ONE piece. Deng, Sefalosha, Hinrich, Hughes, Noah, Nocioni, Gray, Joe Smith, Tyrus, Gooden, Ben Wallace, Shannon Brown, Duhon…Altho they got rid of some of those guys in the process, AT LEAST THESE GUYS WERE GOOD ENOUGH TO BRING BACK HALFWAY DECENT RETURNS
This.

The team has so many holes
and no star player, we keep shifting players around trying to find the solution to losing. LB liked vet players, so he trated away our young players and picks like brown to LA. I’m sticking to need of a stud PF we have no inside play, and won’t have any for a couple of years as long as we have Kwame and the rest. Getting better while still winning will require replacing one piece at a time, we can critique every move management makes, but they have to have the vision to make the right decisions. I don’t like mayo he plays no defense, his shot is inconsistent, and he’s a head case if he was that good the Griz would not let him go at such a young age. Hendo would eat him up 8 times out of 10, offense or defense.
ezrock
i doubt the offense part...no way
I agree Larry Brown messed up the whole team. i like young vets myself but LB went about it all wrong. He picked up some of the most ridiculous contracts. Its like he only knew the stars on the team. He never picked out a shining star waitin for an opportunity to BECOME a star. I think this is the technique we should implement in this rebuilding stage (i hate saying rebuilding in reference to us bc we have never been BUILT) Its so many players 2-4yrs in the league and ready to shine. they also ARE not expensive. and isnt that the main focus. Affordable production?
