Diaw, Kwame Eat Knicks Alive, Help Beat Knicks 114-106

Knicks vs Bobcats boxscore

Posting and Toasting

(Yeah, I used that title on purpose)

With an arena sounding more like Madison Square Garden than Time Warner Cable Arena, the Bobcats sent home much of the crowd disappointed, but pleasing the home fans with a hard-fought impressive win over the visiting New York Knicks.

Eight Bobcats scored in double figures, led by Boris Diaw with 20 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists and zero turnovers. And even though D.J. Augustin couldn’t find his shooting rhythm, he was handing out dimes with ease – something that we haven’t seen in too long. Stephen Jackson had 19 points on a pretty ugly shooting night that was salvaged by four treys. Kwame Brown was also exceptional, grabbing seven rebounds, scoring 11 points and blocking a pair of shots. I’d go on listing who had good games, but I’d just be listing just about all of the Bobcats box score. Carmelo Anthony dropped 36 points and singlehandedly brought the Knicks back into the game before they ultimately fell.

Star-divide

First quarter: In an unforeseen move, Stephen Jackson started for the Bobcats. With the Knicks playing defense on par with Flat Stanley’s, an aggressive Boris Diaw took advantage, hitting 3-4 FG for 8 points and dishing two assists in the first period. Jackson starting strong with two threes but missed his other three shots. Henderson had some nice takes but Augustin couldn’t get much of anything to fall. On defense, Jack is having trouble with Melo and Stoudemire’s athleticism is bothering Diaw, who doesn’t match up well with those types. The Bobcats ended the period down 31-30.

Second quarter: Wow, the Bobcats just really took it to the Knicks in the second. Boris continued to be aggressive, unafraid of taking jump shots, driving or backing opponents down in the post. Livingston was outstanding, using his post game to score over any guard and Matt Carroll even got in on the fun, with 10 points on 4-5 shooting. The Knicks simply just played no defense as they allowed Charlotte to score their most first-half points for the season. New York on offense had no flow and got next to nothing form their bench. Carmelo was a lone bright point with 16 points on 7-11 shooting from the floor. The Bobcats outscored the Knicks 32-15 in the second to lead 62-46 at halftime

Third quarter: The Bobcats nearly folded like so many playing card houses by letting up on defense. They started hot with Jackson and Boris each hitting from distance, stretching the lead to 20. That dwindled as the Bobcats lost focus. Jackson got hit with a technical and started putting up poor shots. When Silas subbed Livingston and the bench mob back in, that all changed. Liv got back where he left off with his scoring. The other bench guys put in their usual effort and prevented a complete collapse. The Bobcats led 92-79 going into the fourth quarter.

Fourth quarter: Remember that collapse I said the bench helped prevent? Turns out it just hadn’t really come yet. The Bobcats let the Knicks get within five. I thought they were crumbling and Anthony would lead the Knicks to a close win. But the team pulled together, overcame some truly heinous Stephen Jackson shots and Kwame Brown was subbed in. What’s that you say? How could Kwame’s substitution make a difference? Well his strength and ability to seal off his defender proved invaluable for the whole night, especially with his dunk off the Stephen Jackson assist with two minutes to go. And so the Bobcats held on, made their free throws and got their second win in a row.

And Indiana lost again tonight, this time to the Pistons. I had their last two games as W’s for the Pacers and the last two for the Bobcats as L’s. So I guess the playoff hopes won’t die tonight.

Odds and Ends

  • Shaun Livingston, Dante Cunningham and Matt Carroll combined for 33 points off the bench.
  • The Bobcats out-rebounded the Knicks 46-39 and 16-10 on offensive rebounds. Their offensive rebounding was led by Dominic McGuire who had five all in the first few minutes of the second quarter.
  • This photo pretty much sums up the game for the Knicks.

this makes me wonder

with the two HUGE wins recently, i wonder what exactly are the Bobcats plans heading into the offseason? normally I would make several (usually unpopular) suggestions/assumptions. But the recent surge has me flabergasted (or does it? haha) about the direction the team is headed.

The Cats make it hard on their fans

My only suggestion is to invest in a beast PF if available and a SG to compete with Hendo.

The 9 million dollar ?

They are both inconsistent, Tyrus has better D Boris has better O. If I was the cats GM depending on who’s available , that’s in our budget would have me lean one way or another. Since we owe the Bulls a 1st round pick for tyrus and we all like DJ White Tyrus might have to go. I stated before he is not my prototype PF. But not an easy decision.

Leaves us with not much scoring

and with the roster left we have not much to entice him to stay, and still limted in what we can do financially until after Diaw and Diop come off the books.

Thats why I dont see a debate

About Boris or Tyrus obviosly Boris goes i was just showing what i woiuld trade him for

by TS BOBCAT on Mar 27, 2011 9:03 AM EDT up reply actions

If we trade a PF I don't think it will be Tyrus, and I don't think it will be a star we get back in return

We either let Boris expire next year, or we trade him similar to Nazr and Gerald → for young talent and or picks.

I don’t think Tyrus yet becuase we invested in him only at the start of this season so I assume we will give him some time to develop into the player we think he can be before we give up on him.

We shouldnt give up on TT

Honesty maybe he wont be a starting PF but he can be a great 6th man and every championship team needs that

Even 2K11 has this to say about Tyrus Thomas,

“He’s got to realize what being great means for Tyrus Thomas. Maybe it’s just being a role player on a really good team”.

Something that’s been bothersome about him since he’s return, and really throughout his whole career, is his lack of consistency with running the plays. He’s out of position all of the time, on offense and defense and he hasn’t been trying to develop his moves around the basket as much as his jumpshot. It’s all a mental thing with this guy. Luckily, he’s still very young and can turn it around, but agree with 2K. I think on a championship contending team, at this point in his career, Tyrus is simply that great role player everyone needs to come in and change the pace of the game on pure athleticism. He lacks the discipline to be a top dog at this point.

Definitely. Same with Hendo, Livingston, and the 2 DJs

Every championship team needs an effective group of complimentary players, and this group suits the bill perfectly.

But probably not the 1st and 2nd options on offense. IMHO.

DJ probably has reached his ceiling or close to it

But Gerald is already a beast defender and since starting he averages 12 ppg which isnt good for a starter but you have to know nothing about basketball if you dont see the talent in this man. I predict at the least he will be a Gerald Wallace type scorer, he gives you 17 ppg and defends like they were attacking his mother.

by TS BOBCAT on Mar 27, 2011 9:47 AM EDT up reply actions

Oh, nah, I'm a huge fan of Henderson now.

I’ve actually said a few times he has “star/superstar” potential. I’m just wondering how he would fit his offense into a championship contending team. The good thing about him is he continues to get better every night. He’s not at that point right now where he’d be the head man or even the second option on a championship contending team, but he is definitely on his way.

He may never be the main or 2nd option

But he can develop into a starter on a championship team. I can see talent pouring out of his pores when I look at him haha

plug any halfway decent Sg into Chicago

they are #1 w/ Keith Bogans so its not fair to say plug Hendo in. I agree they would be better tho. Plug Courtney Lee or Mayo in.

Lol. F it, where is flip murray?

Just illustrating even the contenders have holes in their rosters. It’s really about having good coaching and halfway decent backups. Charlotte is already at the point where we would be ready to.compete if we added one major piece. The question is can Henderson develop into that. I don’t see why not, other than his somewhat limited height.

When he plays like we need him to this is what happens, everybody plays better. Good win cats the Knicks suck, they gutted their team for melo. big mistake they will live over the cap forever, lucky for them they are rich and a big market team. Go Cats I had a great time at the cable box. Let’s beat the Bucks too, I’ll be there cheering us on.

They had been working all of these years just to avoid this type of situation

and Walsh was forced into making the trade. The Knicks will turn it around eventually (not this year I don’t think) and will be fine. But if that core of Billups, Melo, and Amare can’t contend with the top teams of the east now, you wonder if they ever will be able to. But, I know people won’t say a thing about how bad the Knicks are if they play the Celtics/Bulls/Heat in the playoffs and go back to NY with a 2-0 tie or even just a 1-1 score in their series.

if they trade Fields (talent is not the reason they kept him) and keep Chandler, they are waaaay better

They just a need a solid group of bench guys to support their core

Same problem with the Heat. The 2 Williams, Jeffries, Walker, D. Brown(yeah!), and Douglas ain’t gonna cut it. Those are solid bench guys for a D-League team, not a NBA championship-contender team.

You do realise that the Bucks didn't give him that contract, he was

traded by Golden State along with a 2010 second round pick in exchange for Charlie Bell and Dan Gadzuric on 6/22/10 (signed his current contract with GSW as a free agent).

I like the Bucks but I am a little bias to them becuase I follow the career of a fellow Aussie in Bogut.

Bogut has said that he is still not right in his arm and that he needs more surgery at the end of the year to removed scar tissue and clean it out. He probably came back to early → especially considering how poorly he is shooting the ball this year.

No he isn't worth that -> another case where the team went nuts because it had salary cap space

but I think he is being under utilised with the Bucks and I think that he is a pretty damn good player. Probably needs to try and get traded somehow to a team that needs him to start rather than being a bench player.

This was a pretty entertaining game to watch, I might add, although it’s a shame there were so many Knicks bandwagon fans at TWC. Great performance by the Bobcats as a whole, and by that I mean they operated effectively as a cohesive team. We’ve got a pretty nifty second unit too.

Bobcats won tonight. Pacers lost. Bucks lost. Knicks are sinking. This is going to be hilarious here down at the homestretch.

Even if we missed the playoffs,

just to see the Knicks miss the playoffs or come close to missing it would be a joy. I don’t know why I hate them now. I mean, it’s not a passionate hate. It’s just I don’t like Carmelo like that anymore. Never was a big fan of the guy, but he spit on a lot of organizations throughout this whole process, and I think he’s getting what he deserves. I just hate that a classy guy like Billups has to go through it as well.

It's the Hawks.

The Knicks are only 4.5 games ahead of us at this point. If they lose out, or even just lose a big percentage of their remaining games, they will miss the playoffs.Highly unlikely, but they are not showing me that they will change things soon either.

It would almost take

a monumental collapse for them to miss out of the playoffs. Sure, they’re are on a bad losing streak now, but one would think that given their talent, they’ll be able to hold it together to just get by. But who knows.

i wouldnt

i would like to see Miami miss the playoffs tho (i cant stand that team). But that wont happen. if the Knicks miss tha playoffs it would take away from the excitement. and certain series would be better with Carmelo and Amare. imagine the drama of a sweep or total transformation of them making the Finals. it makes for better ball. i could deal with the Pacers or Hawks out but Knicks make for exciting basketball none the less.

This post game quote by Chauncey Billups cracked me up:

I don’t care how good your offense is, you’ve really got to score 120-something to beat a team like that.

I read it several times just to make sure he wasn’t talking about another team! Nice try, Mr. Big Shot, but the only teams that need 120+ points to beat us are those with defenses as bad as the Knicks.

That’s not to say we didn’t take full advantage of their defensive ineptitude, which is not a given. Everyone from Cunningham to Carroll & Livingston were hitting open jumpers, and Diaw shattered his personal record by having two aggressive games in a row.

It was nice to see Augustin’s assists up (and his TOs down) again for the first time in a good while. White & Cunningham are big targets who have been rewarding Augustin lately by finishing a possession with an assisted basket.

Kudos to Hendo & Kwame for a handful of stiff blocks throughout the night. We actually played really strong defense overall, which is weird to say when you see that we gave up 104 points. The Knicks would’ve have been blown out of the Cable Box without Melo. How’s that “superstar buddy system” going, Mr. Anthony? Mr. Stoudemire? Anyone?

I’m still very worried about Jack’s hamstring. I just hope he isn’t pushing himself too hard, and will listen to his inner voice of reason (since he probably won’t listen to anyone else) if his leg bothers him enough to slow him down.

Bring on the Bucks!

He’s one of my favorites to watch right now. I’ll take a Rose or Durant over a LeBron any day. Maybe not as talented, but look at the positive chemistry they bring without all the distractions.

Melo is definately on Lebron’s level. They are both Great. Melo is a better natural scorer. his jumpshot is automatic. His drive to the basket is right there on par with Lebron’s. He doesnt fit the system. Simply put. Do i like Melo as a person? No. But he is an amazing talent that didnt consider he was playing for Mike No-D Antoni b4 he made his move. Melo, Wade, James, Bosh, Amare, Paul are cowards. Mega teams have ran its course and actually pretty boring to watch unless they are losing. They ruin the word “legacy”. And the excitement of basketball as a whole. Kobe, Kevin Martin, Durant, Rose, Dirk realize that they are great but they also know that they can NEVER be bigger than the SPORT. This is why they are slowly becoming favorites or heros against the villianized superteam

Melo doesnt make his teammates better

And can’t carry a team on his own like Lebron has. Insert Bron into Melos place on Denver, and they would have a ring right now. Combine that with the fact the the only part of his game he excels at if offense (with average shooting percentages) and I just don’t say he’s at Brons level at all. Melo in my eyes is a second tier star like Joe Johnson.

I kinda agree. Maybe he needs a coach that will get him to maximize his potential in all facets of the game. He is a way better scorer than Lebron, Durant and Wade. The guy can put the ball in the basket in so many ways but he does have a lot of bad habits to his game. I mean Durant has a way better jumper than Melo but the guy can post you up, slash and hit the Jumper pretty well. Those other guys are good at maybe one or two of those things listed. Melo is also a good rebounder for his position also. I think if he stopped settling for so many pull up J’s and posted up more while looking for his teammates the team could get back on track.

It's all a mental thing with Melo.

He has the skills, he just doesn’t choose to use them night in and night out. Like Focus said, he’ll bring it against the top talents in the league (which is why I still think the Knicks are a dangerous playoff team), but he’ll also let lesser talents take advantage of him when he’s not fully engaged.

Lol. Hell, back in the day,

Redd could shoot the lights out and was good for about 30 a game. I didn’t mean to disrespect Melo like that, but at this point I just see him as only a prolific scorer. He needs to have Kobe’s mentality, then I could put him up there.

by Charlotte Bobcat on Mar 28, 2011 8:38 AM EDT up reply actions

Melo is still a better scorer than Redd ever was though. Redd was a better shooter but Melo can post up and slash good and his jumper is okay spotting up or off the pull up. The dude can score in so many different ways it isn’t even funny. Redd in his prime whole game revolved around that jumper. Kinda how Durant is now. Durant has a really good jumper and gets lots of fouls which helps him score a lot also.

One thing i can do...................is FINGER ROLL.

That's true.

Melo is actually a BEAST around the basket. He should use that part of his game more often, posting up more.

Ugh. Another game where Bobcat fans are almost outnumbered by the opposing team's fans.

That’s why I say we still need to be pushing for the playoffs. We gotta be one of the only teams in the NBA with fans like that.

I watched that last night after our game, and it was very similar. Tons of Bulls fans all over the place, often louder and more prominent than Bucks fans.

Zach Randolph (snub) Demarcus Cousins (snub) Baron Davis (snub)…its a few more but these guys can/do play at superstar levels and will NEVER EVER get the props they deserve. and its sad

About DJ A

A lot of us have been down on Augustine, newsinz made a comment that I feel the same way about. The trade gave him two new guys that can finish a play with a shot for an assists. This is DJ’s first year starting after 2 years of LB hell and wing players and centers that can’t shoot. He need’s scorers around him, then we would not complain that he is shoot first PG. He was really giving NY the business last night. I can only imagine if he was on a better built team to play with, he would be a heck of a weapon. His lack of defense would not bother me he makes up for that with offense. As for example Rondo is a heck of a distributor, but look at who he plays with. The strategic way to defend Rondo is to not let him penetrate, cut off the lanes and let him shoot from beyond the foul line area. He can’t shoot, that’s his down fall as highly rated as he is. If Boston didn’t have the big three he would be wack. DJ will continue to be a better PG he needs better team mates.

ezrock

by ezrock on Mar 27, 2011 1:32 PM EDT reply actions

i totally agree

DJ has a high scoring aptitude. But i think he should be a 3rd scoring option. Kinda like when Gerald/JAX were together. But this time around we should have a SG that doesnt have to create their own offense (like both Geralds or Marion does)…JAX can create his own offense but he doesnt have to and he is a natural SF. With DJ’s quickness and ability to drive, Diaw could be his best friend on the kickout. That and a knockdown shooter at the SG (doesnt have to be a 3pt shot just a long range 2 that can spread the offense) and Augustin is top 15-20 in the league

by focuslja on Mar 27, 2011 1:43 PM EDT up reply actions

then the bench with...

Livingston (speed, drive, ability to distribute) and Gerald (speed, leaping ability) White (outstanding paint play) and (lets just say we keep) Tyrus (paint play and 15ft jumper). We got a crazy bench. I dont like Pryz so i’d rather mention Diop.

by focuslja on Mar 27, 2011 1:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Pryz

I don’t think he will be back, with two major knee surgeries and his age. He has no offense his defense and rebounding is not better than Diop. We also have not choice but to play Diop that contract is a killer, but he showed some improvement before he got hurt. Tyrus’s inability to score close to the basket unless he’s flashing in for a dunk really hurts our power game. And causes double teams on our perimeter players. This is the sequence on how Tyrus got hurt against the Pacers. When he blocked that dunk attempt on Dante Jones and was called for a foul, which was a clean block he ran to half court dropped an f bomb and lost it. On offense the next play he demanded the ball to prove a point, he was out of position to receive the pass it went out of bounds off his finger tips. Back on defense he was still pissed, He went out of his way to block that short jumper in the lane got all out of wack landed hard and bruised his ribs. It was all his fault because he lost his composure. I watched all develop from my seat. That’s the type psycho stuff that can hurt our team if he can’t control him self.

wow...didnt know it happened like that

well those actions are detrimental to the team. Esp if u are injuring urself and minimizing the production of 45mil. If u noticed then Im sure the coaching staff were watching. that very sequence might be an very big part of what happens at the PF position this offseason. (having them both is great but it would make more sense to move one). i think Diaw realized that w/ Tyrus making such a mistake, he had a chance to prove himself (being that he has been written off by alot of fans and analyist as a major piece going forward)…hence the “madman” BoJo V.2

Not mention right after he fell to the ground from the rib injury, and he rolled over in agony, he started repeatedly kicking the ground like a toddler throwing a temper tantrum. I actually thought that part was hilarious.

In all seriousness, did you see the play? He did everything short of pound on the floor with one hand, and suck on his thumb with the other.

Just heard from hoopsworld

That Toronto is open to moving Bargnani. Who trading for him be a good idea?

by TS BOBCAT on Mar 27, 2011 3:03 PM EDT reply actions

He seems a bit like Diaw to me -> lacks that killer instict / competitive drive to get the best out of himself every night

but the thing that scares me off is his contract:
2011/12: 9 mil
2012/13: 10 mil
2013/14: 11 mil
2014/15: 12 mil

Under the new CBA he will be very, very expensive.

Bargnani is not a center....

He’s a PF/SF in a C’s body. He could be a great 6th man off the bench though….

by mangoes52 on Mar 27, 2011 3:18 PM EDT reply actions

Bargnani Is definatley not a 6th man

But we need a SF and the way people are talking Tyrus isnt are starting PF so really it might be good for us

by TS BOBCAT on Mar 27, 2011 8:28 PM EDT up reply actions

actually Bargnani would be a great 6th man...

I have a friend who’s a die hard Raps fans, and he thinks so too. Barg is a SF/PF in a C’s body. It would likely take a couple first rounders and a role player to get him, so he’s kinda out of the question.

by mangoes52 on Mar 27, 2011 9:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Better then Boris

And then have Tyrus coming in behind him for defense decent 1,2 punch at PF if yopu ask me. But I would only give up Boris and one 1st rounder maybe 2 but I dont know.

by TS BOBCAT on Mar 27, 2011 10:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Bbargnani averages 22 pts. and 5 rebounds a game. Yea, better than Boris

But TS BOBCAT that Boris and a first trade won’t work. Toronto wants to build around Ed Davis(PF). They have no need for Diaw. Toronto needs a SF, and a C.

by mangoes52 on Mar 27, 2011 11:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Boris really isnt that good

I know he could be but talent is useless if you dont use it. And I know that trade doesnt work but really thats all I could think of that would be worth him.

Andrea is a super soft jump shooting big. LOL. He would be a good player if you had another big who could cover up his defensive and rebounding short comings. I mean how can you be 7 feet tall and not at least average 9 rebounds. Melo, Durant, Lebron and Wade average more boards than him and they are 2’s and 3’s!! Blair averages more boards and plays a whole quarter less in playing time. LOL. Dude is softer than baby poo

Com on w this dj stuff wud be better if he had better players to play w. Wat a joke. If he wud get in the paint and create the players hes playing w wud allow him to get ten assists a game. Granted hes getn in the paint as of lste and almost getn ten assists , at least he did the lat game.

We dont need his shooting whc is off , need his dimes in the paint. If he keps getn inside ,the guys who play great d but cant create ther own shot will flourish.

Imagine if diaw played this way all yr. Hes lost us ten games . Its the defense of diaw, white, cunningham, hendo, maquire n carroll thats getn it done. Add ball n man movement and we win and dont have to rely on jax so much.forgat k brown on d, he takes up space and rebs.

DJ's play

I don’t know if you’ve seen as many games as I have. My opinion is to be a great PG in this league you need team mates who can score whether it’s in close or jumpers, long 2’s or 3’s. If I penetrate and dish to my big guys down low and they fumble it away it’s a turn over. Do the same thing for the wing players and they shoot bricks no assists. Now were behind because the other team can hit shots, our D is good enough on most nights that were not getting dunked on. On most nights Jack is a black hole when he gets the ball we wait for him to do his thing to get us points he rarely shoots 50% or more. Back to DJ he’s the second best scorer on our team that’s why he’s allowed to shoot when were struggling. Teams know that he’s our other option he gets doubled on pick rolls, who ever sets the pick is no threat that minimizes his skills. That’s were Boris comes in earlier in the season DJ would pass to an open Boris and would scream at him to shoot it Boris would act like he never heard a thing, and do what he wants. Eventually DJ stopped yelling at him , remember DJ played the point for Texas one of his team mates was Kevin Durant and other scorers. His play on that team is what landed him in the NBA. If you play with scrubs and you’re running the point you will never maximize your talent.

You truly love him haha jk

I like Boris he is a nice guy and can play every few games, but I hope you look at all his games this year sure he could come out and give you a lot of points, rebounds, and assists but he wont do it and I know you have noticed he wont. I dont know if you think he will eventually get better and start playing hard. The argument that he doesnt fit in our system your probably right but I dont see where that stops him from scoring plus why not trade him for someone that can play in our system?

Charlotte could easily win 4 of their next 5

at home vs. Bucks= WIN
at home vs. Cavs=WIN
away vs. Magic=LOSS
at home vs. Wizards=WIN
away vs. Cavs=WIN

Charlotte could also win their last 3 games against Detroit, New Jersey and Atlanta. Atlanta is slumping, and they might even rest their starters for the playoffs. That could give Charlotte 37 wins. More than enough to secure the final playoff spot.

so many ups and downs

I don’t know what to expect from our team any given night. I think we can win 6 out of the last ten, but it depends on who shows up to play. I also don’t think Boris cost us 10 games we don’t count on him to be that kind of a player, just keep them guessing and not pass up most scoring opportunities.
