Bobcats lose to Mavericks, 101-92; three quarters of listlessness give way to one quarter of thrills
Good fans get frustrated with their teams, sometimes. You are a thinking, autonomous person who knows good basketball when he sees it, so it's okay to be annoyed when the team you root for doesn't play well. Furthermore, it's okay to be upset if you think you see an easy way for them to get better results. But remember: it's a pro basketball team, and no matter how much you care about this institution, thinking and caring about the team is rarely worth ruining your day, or someone else's day.
I wrote that at the end of the third quarter, anticipating a depressing blowout, and though true that it took until the fourth quarter for the Bobcats to start playing with an edge, those last eight minutes or so redeemed the previous forty and reminded me of why we stick around to watch. Charlotte played an exciting brand of hard-nosed ball that brought them within shouting distance of pulling even, though in the end it wasn't enough.
The Bobcats lost to the Dallas Mavericks on their home floor, 101-92. Going into tonight's game, the Mavs were the two-seed in the Western Conference, so it's not as if the Cats were favored, but the one disappointing takeaway is that our guys shot 37% from the field and allowed Dallas to shoot 47%, especially given the offensive explosion we saw last night against Miami.

GAME THREAD COMMENT
Newsinz -- Hey D.J.! Great to see ya' again!
BAD
-- Tyson Chandler pretty much did what he wanted all game. Some of that is on the refs for allowing a rough game, which, in this instance, tended to favor the Mavs, but allowing a rough game doesn't totally explain how Chandler got 15 rebounds, 8 offensive.
-- I'm not sure what has to happen to get Derrick Brown on the floor. With Dominic McGuire, I've come around to the position that he's probably, in sum, going to be more valuable than Brown right now, just because he refrains from shooting enough to limit his negative skill, and he probably is a legitimate plus defender. But with Eduardo Najera, it seems pretty clear that he's not a good defensive player, no matter how much effort it appears he's putting into his play, and there's no way he's a plus offensive player. With Brown, he's a plus offensive player, and he needs work on his defense. But he's not really going to improve his defense without playing time.
GOOD
-- D.J. Augustin came on strong in the second half, and ended up scoring 21 points (19 in the second half) on 17 attempts, and in only 27 minutes.
-- Gerald Wallace pulled down 11 rebounds, which was good, and at times looked like the only one playing intense defense, which is better. That he scored 13 points on 15 attempts is, on the surface, not so great, but check out his shot chart. He was getting in the paint and attempting his shots there. It's a freaking miracle he only got 2 free throw attempts.

dump DJ!!!Get curry or T-mac!!!
He can’t defend at all, can’t get teammates involved in the offense, and now he can’t even make the damn shoot.Maybe he scored 21 today, but it took him 17 shots and when he is on the court,we always 4 on 5 on defense, that’s why Mavericks can over score us by 15 points in the first 3 quarters.Livingston is a much better PG than DJ is.
I'm not ready to trade him just yet
But it’s really starting to look like his only game is what the defense gives him. He has enough moves and quickness to get a couple nifty layups each game. But 90% of the time, if a defender stays on him, he’s just too short to create his own shot.

SILAS VS. L.B.
Did not see our coach call any time outs late to draw up some plays when we were within ten. I thought we were having success with Wallace driving and getting to the line. Also, DJ has poor defensive skills and seemed to be nervous against another good team tonight until the second half. Hope he doesn’t do the same Monday against Rondo. Can we not please trade Jack for Rip Hamilton now ?

Jack's not the problem...
Don’t trade him, him and DJ are one of the top 5 backcourt combos in the league. Our problems are elsewhere. Boris is holding us back, especially since T2 is out. Kwame is also a poor defender, and Gerald is not playing at his optimum
I'd don't think DJ was nervous
He’s played well against plenty of great PGs and teams. He just wasn’t open. I think it’s really as simple as, teams now are making sure a defender stays on him. And since he’s no longer wide open, he’s too short to create his own shot.

SCUMBAG CHANDLER
Hanging on the rim like a chimp. The guy missed 40 + games last year due to phantom injuries and now in a contract year is putting up Hall of Fame numbers. Crash hates him too for laying down on us last year.

Say what you will about LB, and him hamstringing our players offensively, HOWEVER
With him as coach, our teams were some of the best Ds in the league. Although Silas has freed the Offense up a bit, our D seems to have suffered greatly. Getting to the bucket for other teams is much too easy…
The defense was great last year
But as far as this year goes, the numbers have actually improved since Silas took over.
why the najera hate?
he was frustrating Dirk the entire fourth quarter which is a helluva lot more than Boris Diaw did
If by “frustrate” you mean you think Najera was the reason Dirk shot 2-6 in the fourth instead of 2-4, or 3-5, like he did in previous quarters, then I suppose you’d come to that conclusion. I happen to think it had nothing to do with Najera, who was also “guarding” Dirk for stretches of those earlier quarters, and letting him get away for open looks.

Najera led the team with a +5
Jack and Wallace got Dirk duty in the fourth also and did it well. Ultimately, he could’ve gotten hotter and we could’ve been really really blown out.
I hate moral victories but we had 92 points, only 7 turnovers, 88% free throw shooting. 32% for the Mavs for 3 was an improvement for our 3d.
Chemistry,
sticking to the principles coached, being a hustler, and making a positive impact on offense and defense is typically indicative through +/- IMO
considering i was at the game
and saw dirk getting frustrated
i say that it was najera… he was pushing, shoving, elbowing him several times and dirk was getting peeved
I don't think anyone appreciates
how amazingly aloof Boris Diaw really is…
he makes a stupid foul and doesn’t even apologize to his teammates…
he gets fouled and it’s not called, he doesn’t blink at the referee…
his on again/off again defense is REALLY noticable live, which is probably why I’ve been so critical of him
Jax should’ve gotten a second techincal when he got fouled by Terry… it took like 8 minutes for the announcer to explain what happened, but we all thought they called the foul on Jax and were REALLY pissed.
A lot of people left halfway through the third, so a bunch of people migrated to the lower bowl, which I bet looked pretty good on tv. Am I wrong?
that said
i appreciated the ref’s restraint for NOT teeing him up, considering the weird call on the floor
Jack is a team captain and has a right to an explanation.
You can only watch the team be held back by the refs for so long. Most of us only take it from the IRS because of the tax refund LUBE. At some point, I stand let go of my ankles and fight back. What do you expect Jack to do for his team if he’s honestly a leader. If I’m stepping on a battlefield I’m picking Jack leagues before you.
Jack's T was ridiculous
Friendly tip: when you’re back in half court defense, and your man has the ball, probably not the best time to not even be looking at him and jawing at the ref instead.
So how does that statement go again...
Did you guys really think we would win?
I mean we just played the top team in the west and lost by 9…
Coming off of a loss to the #2 team in the east…
And we face the #1 team in the East on Monday…
Yeah…these games are proving that we aren’t winning a ring this year and everyone knew that from the start…but so far, it is proving that we could most likely start taking out some middle and end of the road teams…and I honestly believe you’ll see that after the all star break. Give these guys some rest and it will be VERY interesting as to what happens.

It would help that TT will be back by then.
Until then, I can’t imagine we don’t see a trade at the deadline.

I wouldnt mind trying a trade for McGee from washington
He would be a nice center for years. And we might be able to to get him from them because I dont think that washington is very pleased with him.

That's what kills me about rosterbation
Some of the trade proposals I’ve seen are so ridiculously lopsided in our favor that they have less of a chance than a snowball in hell. All you have to do is match up salaries, and viola! Trade is successful! smh…

I don't rosterbate bcz I'm no good at it but...
Sherron can go for a power forward. I know Troy Murphy is set to have a new home and if giving up Derrrick Brown, Dominic, Eddy, or…not Wallace or Jack or Nazr…Livingston will get that done. I’m thinking he needs some defensive coaching and some freedom to play. I could see that being a good situation.
But the PF would come from the D-League. That’s where Sherron would go, too.

Jordan
MJ needs to spend some money get some players on a trade and get rid of some dead weight on the bench.
DJ's defense is killing him
He just absolutely could not stay in front of Barea. It was miserable to watch. He needs to score 30+ per game, just to offset the difference in all the points he’s allowing the other team’s PG to score easily.

At some point we have to accept a player's limitation
I don’t like saying “never”, but DJ will never be more than a marginal defensive player. His value to this team is on the offensive end and he plays well most of the time. Diaw is never going to average the double double that he is capable of averaging because he is nonchalant. I want to take that a step further and say he doesn’t take pride in his job, but I don’t know him personally so I will withhold that judgment.
Jackson is going to get T’s sometimes while his man is getting a wide open layup on the other end and Wallace is going to disappear from time to time on offense because his jumper isn’t great.
This team has its limitations, but we knew that coming into the season. The Cats are the 7th or 8th best team in the East. If they can win a playoff game this year, I will consider the season a success. This franchise has established a culture where it “trades to get better.” This is why I understand why people rosterbate so much. That being said, I don’t think there is a trade out there that would dramatically improve this team.
I think Charlotte should ride the season out with the current roster. The Cats under Silas are more than capable of getting back to the post season.

Is DJ's, let's say, 20 points per game worthwhile
If he’s allowing his man to easily get 15+???
I think this game was DJ’s ceiling when team’s try to stop him. Meaning from here on out, we’ll probably rarely see 20+ games. And will most often see about 12 points??? Clearly guess work, but you get my point. Then include the points he’s easily giving up and I’m not sure he’s that valuable.
Please prove me wrong DJ.

Observations
I was disappointed to see Henderson only take two shots. He is one of the players I’d love to see take at least 10 shots a game, along with Livingston and all five starters.
The Mavs were scraping DJ off of very tight screens all game long. If he has to go under the screen, his teammate must pop out on the ball handler immediately. Far too often, that did not happen, and DJ’s man was free to do what he pleased. Still, his offense came alive in the 2nd half after a 2 1/2 game slump, and he ended up leading all Bobcats with 21, so I have to chalk up his overall performance as a positive.
Kwame has a better offensive attack, a much better touch at the free throw line (including his patented lane violation inducing “hitch” that gives him a freebie every now & then), and he’s really adept at tracking down rebounds on both ends of the floor. However, he is inexplicably soft against defending in the paint, and I think this is the primary reason why he doesn’t receive more playing time down the stretch. I remain hopeful that Oakley is gravely aware of this glaring weakness, and has already begun addressing it.
Dirk cannot be guarded one on one. As soon as he puts the ball on the floor, someone from his blind side should attack the ball. He surprised me with his defense, though. He was more stout contesting shots than I’ve seen from him before.
Derrick Brown is getting robbed of his minutes by Najera. Silas is the accomplice in this heinous crime. Someone must put a stop to this madness.
Nine overall turnovers is solid, and we only gave up seven points off those turnovers.
Wallace looked very solid for the second game in a row. If he does it again against Boston, I may just exhale.
Chandler played a significant role in the Mav’s victory. There; I said typed it.

I feel like Henderson is just taking what the defense gives him, instead of being agressive in getting to his spots.
I think with time he will start to flex some offensive muscle……I hope.
