Bobcats Trade Analysis

Gerald Wallace for Joel Przybilla, Dante Cunningham, Sean Marks, 2011 First Round Pick (conditional, via New Orleans), 2013 First Round Pick (conditional)

As I've said before, this is a hard trade to swallow. Not because the Bobcats are getting shafted or anything (we're not), but because we're trading away the face of our franchise for basically the past seven years.

A guy who said this: "I love the city of Charlotte. I love the fans. I feel like I owe the city. The city doesn't owe me anything"

Gerald Wallace is truly atypical in today's NBA - in the best way possible. He won't tip-toe around tough questions in the locker room and he worked his way up from expansion pick to all-star through hard work and effort that he built around his talent.

However, the team still has to make this move. The Bobcats have been drifting around the 7th-8th seed in the Eastern Conference for the past few years now. There hasn't been much of any room to improve either as the team was built around veterans. As such, the Bobcats had to deal one of their veteran players for young talent and/or draft picks to initiate the rebuilding process. And as heartbreaking as it was, Wallace obviously got the best value from other teams, so the Bobcats felt they had to make the move.

Star-divide

And I don't blame them in the least. I love Crash, but getting two first round draft picks and decent young talent in Cunningham is a good deal. I don't have any clue what the conditions are on the draft picks but it looks like the 2011 one will be around 20th overall. The 2013 pick is an unknown at this point. While we didn't get to fleece Minnesota for a top pick, two first round picks around 20th overall is pretty nice. Couple that with our sure-to-be lottery pick, and the Bobcats could be looking at a very solid young core - if they draft well.

As for the players we got in this trade, Joel Przybilla is a decent center that gives the Bobcats a big man with an expiring contract to back up Kwame. Dante Cunningham is an exciting young forward with great energy and leaping ability. Dave, one of the editors at BlazersEdge, tells me that Cunningham has a nice 18-foot jumper and can slash and sky for impressive dunks. I look forward to seeing him play. Sean Marks will probably be waived, as Mike Cranston reports. I don't really know much about him besides that he's the only NBA player from New Zealand.

Trade grade: A-

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Nazr Mohammed for D.J. White and Morris Peterson

I can't say I really get this trade. It's not a salary dump (the Bobcats actually take on money). I guess we just really wanted D.J. White, especially since the Bobcats are reportedly going to buy out Mo Pete. From what I understand about D.J. White, he's a high energy rebounder. That's cool, I guess. Ridiculous Upside's Scott Schroeder told me White is "a beast" so I guess he's got that going for him.

Trade grade: C

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Overwhelming effect

Obviously the people most affected by this are Gerald Henderson and Stephen Jackson. Jackson is going to move to the small forward position and Gerald Henderson will take over the starting spot at the shooting guard. Matt Carroll will see an uptick in his minutes. Cunningham will likely be the back up SF (even though he's more of a power forward) and White will be the backup PF until Tyrus Thomas returns, at which point White will become the third PF. The center position will remain quite thin with Kwame and Przybilla holding down the front court. Wowzers.

jordan is flip-flopping in his approach

from a management standpoint, thats a bad sign. I am not gonna be another “jordan has no clue guy” but I got his letter and it said he was building for a championship, not rebuilding. and if your doing both from a philosphical standpoint, then your by definition “not sure”. these moves dont rebuild if you take on salary (nazr was expiring, why trade for a contract when your doing a salary dump?) and they sure as hell dont build a championship contender unless you get lucky down the road with those picks used or traded. the championship approach needs guys to build around, gerald henderson aint it, running back stephen jackson aint it either, dj augustine is nice and so is ty thomas, but honestly they are guys you put around someone else, not the other way around. I commend jordan for doing moves, I really do, but you need a solid focus when those moves are made. see boston, they moved for named guys to put around pierce, signed young guys to stack around them, preached team defense and wham they are no longer a laughing stock. look at OKC if you want the opposite, they shed everyone from the last sonics team, ray allen, reshard lewis, and get tons of picks and draft WELL and GET LUCKY. so maybe the approach is just that, but if so focus on that and send diaw for picks and youngsters, and jakcson for the same and go full OKC mode. but you depend on luck in the draft with that plan

"..and we have scott may coming back this season.." bob johnson quote before the start of 07-08 season, when he didnt even know his own players name.

The Naz Trade

Says they like D.J. White as a young prospect. We just traded one expiring for a smaller expiring and a young power forward on a cheap deal. That says to me that they’re taking a shot on White as Tyrus’ eventual backup after Diaw leaves next year, either in free agency or as a deadline deal. Do your thing, Oak.

by djwilliams11 on Feb 25, 2011 9:34 AM EST reply actions

I, for one, is a fan of DJ White's game

..in the 2k series. Consistent post-defender and rebounder. Has a reliable range too. He’s been a journeyman in the NBA, though. Heck, there were reports last year that our country tried to get him naturalized so he can play for our national team. But he eventually took the offer from a NBA team (not sure if its Toronto or Phoenix).

I’m concerned with the SF position. Are we going to let Cunningham play multiple positions? It’s either him or Najera as the backup for Jax. Our bench is messed up right now.

by mikael matthews on Feb 25, 2011 9:54 AM EST up reply actions

D.J.'s not a journeyman

Drafted by the Blazers? and had his rights traded on draft day to the Thunder

by KaiserBromley on Feb 25, 2011 9:55 AM EST up reply actions

Oh really? But I've seen him in the D-League

and Phoenix. And I’m pretty sure that this is the guy that we tried to get naturalized.

Holy. My bad, my bad.

The guy that I’m referring to was Dwayne Jones. Not D.J. White. This is ridiculous. Well, at least I got the initials right.

by mikael matthews on Feb 25, 2011 10:09 AM EST up reply actions

Ridiculus Upside maybe....

D.J. White was an absolute beast in the D. If he gets burn I expect rust and then good things. He’s got a high motor and a wide body. You won’t be disappointed.

Definitely not thrilled about the trade, but have come to be more realistic about it.

Gerald Wallace is a Star. He was our Star. However, his peak was last year. So many of the brilliant plays that we witnessed last year came less frequently this year. The monster dunks, the out-of-nowhere blocked shots, the slashes to the rim, the unexpected 3 pointers, all occurred regularly last year. Although he was playing well recently, he still wasn’t GW 2010.

I am not sure that GW will ever be able to paly at the 2010 level again. The game has taken a toll on his body. He spends more time crashing to the court than any player in the NBA. He shifts to PF when needed to take on much larger players. He drives to the basket with reckless abandon. All the things we love about GW, the hustle, the dedication, the selfless play, all take a toll on him.

So to be realistic about the trade. We probably got top value for GW at the right time. We are fighting for the 8th seed this year. The trade does not change this. In future years maybe we can fight for a Championship.

RoF is such a refreshing break

from the doom and gloom of every other Cats fan I’ve spoken too. Aside from my obvious heartache, I like both of these trades. As much as we like to think, Gerald isn’t a star. He’s a great 2nd/3rd option on a contending team. His value only stood to decrease as time passed. We gained draft picks through a trade?!?! A welcome change.

I like what I hear about Dante Cunningham. And I remember watching DJ White play at Indiana and I always thought that he would be a solid role-player on an NBA team. Two young players with upside, no qualms here.

With Crash this team was no better than 6-8 seed and first round fodder. Glad MJ & Co. are trying to upgrade and aren’t happy with status quo. I have faith in MJ’s overall vision for the franchise.

Definitely hard to swallow ANY Gerald Wallace trade

This city absolutely adored him more than anything. If the fans had any reason to go to a Bobcats game during their floundering initial seasons it was to see Gerald Wallace’s high-flying acrobatics. He was the heart and soul of this team, and I will miss him thoroughly every time I enter the cable box and see him emblazoned above the entrance.

Although trading him is hard to swallow, I am really okay with the trade. It’s a lot like the Panthers situation in that both teams have superior depth at a position, and can trade one of their starters if the value of the trade is good enough. Gerald Wallace was really like DeAngello Williams, the established veteran who’s been with the team and has some good miles on his wheels. Stephen Jackson is like Jonathan Stewart, he can step in to Wallace’s starting position seamlessly. IMO, we have lost little in the trade other than depth. We will be fine with Jackson now at the 3, and we finally have something to build our future upon. If we can nail one of the next 4-5 1st round picks in the next 3 years, and land a top FA, we’ll have serious potential to be a team that could contend for the Eastern Conf champ.

by chris in union county on Feb 25, 2011 10:57 AM EST reply actions

Jax is actually a pretty solid on ball defender especially when he is at his natural position at the 3. Guarding SG’s was not his forte. He isn’t going to get the flash blocks or sky threw the air for a slam but he is a more then adequate defender

But thankfully...

Henderson is a marvelous SG defender. Anytime you can give Kobe Bryant a hard time you’ve got to be considered an excellent defender. I think in some ways this may slightly elevate Jax’s defensive game.

The Blazers will take very good care of GW.

Here is a list of players on the team who said they DO NOT WANT TO BE TRADED:
Batum, Camby, Joel Pryzbilla, Miller, Rudy Fernandez.
LMA knows he won’t be traded. But said he wants to retire a Blazer.
Batum should know..but he still stated this.
Matthews just got here..so knew he was relatively safe…5 yr contract.
Last year Juwann Howard said he’d like to retire a Blazer (he was traded to Miami so am sure he is ok with this..was only here one year)
Both Blake and Joel came BACK to the Blazers after leaving and playing on other teams…

Camby said he will retire if traded.
Rudy said he will go back to Europe if traded.
Joel said he may retire if traded…came back from a horrific injury that was REPEATED 3 mos. later in the shower last March. Original injury was in Dec. Ruptured patellar tendon.

So the players want to stay here…unlike other franchises where they are itching to leave.

It’s good to read that GW was loved in Charlotte. He will be loved here too..guaranteed.
Esp with his attitude!!!!

The Rose Garden is sold out. The crowd is loud. The team is very pampered…and the team chemistry is great.

And Bernie Bickerstaff is an assistant coach here….bet he had something to do with this..

John Hollinger NBA Insider
“I have no idea why Paul Silas has kept Brown on the pine while rolling out mediocrities such as Dominic McGuire and Matt Carroll to take his minutes. I do know this: He has NBA athleticism, can shoot well enough to get by and, as a second-year pro, can still improve. That combination of attributes is the type you like to take a chance on, and although Brown’s upside isn’t huge (he’s 24 and has had PERs in the 12s his first two seasons), I’m fairly sure he can be a rotation player if he gets half a chance.”

I do wish UPS best of luck in all future endeavors but if he couldn’t make it on the court with player friendly Silas and Silas own son working with him in practice then i don’t know what else he could of done here. As i said i wish him best of luck in his future and hope he finds him a home somewhere….

Blazers fan here

Just want to say that I think both team did well in this trade. I truly hope that the picks and cap relief from this trade help your team build toward a regular playoff contender. Also, take care of Joel if he stays there…he’s a legend here. He doesn’t play as well as he used to, but he still has a no-B.S. attitude you will probably come to love like we did. He helped us move out of the Jail Blazer era and kept us afloat so many times when Ratliff or Oden or Camby was hurt.

Also, enjoy Dante. He doesn’t have the raw talent of Crash, but he plays with the same energy, effort and mentality and can defend 3 or 4 positions. You’ve scored a cheap, reliable rotation player with him.

Good luck with the rest of the year and beyond.

I dispense B.S. and facts. It is up to you to figure out which is which.

Or did I misinterpret the “Couple that with our sure-to-be lottery pick…” comment? Maybe I’m being wildly optimistic, but I think we have a good chance to sneak in at 7 or 8. I’m not saying we’ll advance, but to still make the playoffs while making what I believe is a big rebuilding/retooling/reloading roster move would be remarkable. I say we’re still in the hunt.

We’re not going have the new guys tonight? I thought there would be time for the physicals to go through. Hopefully the quality of our opponent will help us overcome being short handed.

I really think...

We got some good players with Dante Cunningham and DJ White. Well based on what they did in college, I can remember the last time the Tarheels won the championship and they had to play Nova to get to the Final Four, in which Dante was the man at Nova! He was pretty much unguardable! He had a great year and even better tournament! But the Heels pulled the game out in the end though and went to the Final Four. And DJ White, to me has a game similiar to Big Baby and probably better inside, but doesn’t have the jumpshot that Big Baby has, but is a big body with a helluva post game.

Draft Pick Analysis

We have our pick and the New Orleans pick this year. Here is how it might play out.

If we make the playoffs, we almost certainly get pick #15 in the draft (our pick). Worst record to make the playoffs. If we barely miss the playoffs, our record compared to some teams in the West who missed out would probably net us the #11 pick (#10 thru #14)ish. Also includes a lottery ball chance.

New Orleans is currently at the 5th seed, but only 1 1/2 games from the 9th seed. If they keep up their record and make the playoffs, the pick would be around #20. If they miss the playoffs, they will likely have nearly the best record to miss out, which would give us pick #14. Also includes a lottery ball chance, but if the lottery is won, New Orleans gets the pick this year and we get their pick next year.

Reasonable worst case scenario would be maybe picks #16 and #22.

Reasonable best case scenario would be maybe picks #10 and #14.

Unrealistic best case scenario would be pick #1 (win the lottery) and pick #14

If this draft is as weak as what many predict

Then both picks aren’t worth much, maybe the equivalent of late round picks in a normal year (except the actual players get paid more). The Bobcats will be drafting bench depth.

I've never wanted the Hornets to miss the playoffs so badly.

Dante Cunningham has actually played Center when smaller lineups are in.

He doesn’t have the moves to guard small forwards..which is why he is usually played as a power forward.
He hustles, is smart and a great team mate.
We are going to miss him.
So you may actually see him playing more center minutes than Joel!!!

Thanks for the insight!

I’ve said since yesterday that Cunningham is the new player that I’m most excited about, which I really can’t explain because he’s been nowhere near my radar (never heard of ‘em, honestly) until the past 24 hours. I’m excited to see how he performs with extended minutes.

Anyone else think Jordan Hamilton would be a great fit mid 1st? (has a bit of SJax in him)

DJ-Hendo-Hamilton-Tyrus-Kwame/draft pick

Has great potential on the offensive end.

DJ-Hendo-Hamilton-Cunningham-Tyrus

Is a potential nightmare fastbreak unit haha

Really like Hamilton, Keith Benson and Terrence Jones as our picks this year

I liked the look of that Brazilian kid "Bebe"

Checked out some clips of him. Crazy athlete that could be a monster in a couple of years. Needs to gain at least 35-50 lbs to play center in the NBA, but he could be a nice piece for the future…Or he could be Ajinca all over again…Who knows…? Really hard to guess on what players will stay in school and which ones will leave school early makes evaluating what we could end up with almost impossible to forecast…

Yet again, no mention about Hendo being ready to start NOW (not down the road) and help keep us competitive

I think he is the X-factor in this deal that a lot of people are overlooking.

Dante is really starting to come along

As a blazer fan I’v been use to seeing guys fill in well for injured players, but Dante was really starting to turn it on. Just two games before the all-star break he had 18 points and 13 rebounds in 24 minutes. I know we were playing the Wolves, but his hustle and energy will quickly make him a likeable guy. Not to mention he is an oustanding guy off the court and an interesting strech four.

Sorry to see Nazr and Wallace go

but I think both trades are good as they are made with a view to the future which is what I thing we need to be doing now.

Obviously they see something in DJ White to warrant getting him over and seeing if he can do something when given some time.
Getting 2 first rounders and a look at a yongster is Dante is also a good move and probably a reasonably price for Wallace. Priz is really just there to match salary and replace Nazr so I really don’t consider him to be the target of this deal.

I just want to say, have fun with Dante.

I believe he was the Blazers best kept secret. He is a hard worker and knows what to do and when to do it. I met him a few times and he is a fantastic person. I hate to see him in a different uniform, but hope you guys embrace him and give him love.
