Trade Suggestion

OK, as I check and check and check for Bobcats news, I sometimes stumble upon things that make me wonder. I do not believe that we make any trades or MAJOR roster moves this year, but what if

Star-divide

What if decided to go all-in with Kemba. We decide he is our guy moving forward. After drafting him, the press conference almost made it sound like DJ was an afterthought. Where am I going with this? I read this morning that Atlanta is concerned that they only have 1 healthy point guard on their roster as them move into Training Camp. Here is my hypothetical proposal. What if...

What if we were to offer DJ Augustin and Boris Diaw to Atlanta for Marvin Williams and Kirk Hinrich. We would pick up a slightly taller PG that has been in the league for a while and could mentor Kemba. He's also on an expiring contract, so that is a nice thing. We also pick up Marvin Williams to shore up the SF position. He's got 2 years left on his contract, but we could then let Maggette and Williams flourish, and see if one of them sticks. If Marvin did, and flourished under Silas, in 2 years, Williams will be 27, and if we wind up drafting H. Barnes, we could offer Williams a smaller contract to stay and mentor Barnes as we amnesty Maggette next year ;-)

Both teams fill a need and get an expiring contract.

I can't wait to hear the comments on this one!

I suppose...

We could try and offer Diop and Najera instead of Diaw…
That would give Hortford a backup, ATL a 2nd PG, and an expiring in Najera…

Thanks for the idea BBP

I'm not sure if Atlanta wants to give up Hinrich,

or if I would want to take on Williams’ contract, but it would be worth a shot imo.

That's terrible Andrew.

Those two are actually assets. If we’re going to trade them, we need assets back. That means either picks, cap relief (meaning we need to package Carroll, Najera, Diop with them), or young players. That trade checks off none of those three boxes, therefore are totally unnecessary moves for the direction this team is going in.

by Panthers FTW on Dec 7, 2011 11:14 AM EST reply actions

Just how cheap are you thinking we are wanting to go...

and who do you think would want to come via free agency to our team that is doing a ground up rebuild? How much space under the cap do we need? We can’t go under 85% this season…

I’m also thinking in terms of past THIS season.

With the roster as is, no trades or anything…
When the Summer of ‘12 arrives, Boris and Najera are gone. That’s $13mil gone and 2 PF gone.

So with the current roster, 2012 is

PG – DJ(due some sort of contract)/Kemba
SG – Hendo/Carroll
SF – Maggette/Cunningham
PF – Thomas/White
C – Diop/Biyombo

10 players
Friday will be telling because we’ll find out if Kwame returns
We find out who else may come into camp. It is an awkward situation.

If we Sign Kwame, 2012 looks more like:
PG – DJ(due some sort of contract)/Kemba
SG – Hendo/Carroll
SF – Maggette/Cunningham
PF – Thomas/Biyombo/White
C – Kwame/Diop

11 players if we give Augustin a contract.

This is a good thinking exercise for us all…but our hands are technically tied until something happens Friday

Keep those comments coming. I wish I could get comments going at Trade Street Post like I do here.

You're forgetting about the superstars we hope to be drafting.

We’re looking to get good draft picks that are superstars (hopefully) and rebuild around them. Giving our only true assets (Diaw and DJ) for two players that aren’t really going to contribute in the future (getting players to mentor other players is a waste of a roster spot, imo) isn’t right for the path we’re on. We either not to get rid of our bad contracts, get draft picks, or getting young talent for these two guys. That’s about it.

by Panthers FTW on Dec 7, 2011 3:48 PM EST up reply actions

So...

When we get those superstars…If we don’t win a championship in the years that the rookie contract spans through, how do we keep them here?

Bobcats Basketball is my only pro sports passion...

by andrewlail76 on Dec 7, 2011 4:50 PM EST up reply actions

The exact same way OKC will be able to keep Durant.

By building a title contender, there is no reason for our superstar to leave. By also having no bad contracts and cap room, we can build around those stars when they get here and also have the flexibility to sign long term once the time comes.

by Panthers FTW on Dec 7, 2011 6:24 PM EST up reply actions

We got Cho...and he engineered it there...so...

I guess in Cho we trust. That’s why I’m a purchasing agent and he’s an NBA GM

by andrewlail76 on Dec 7, 2011 8:28 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Dont give him

all the credit for that. He wasnt the GM there. He worked on a board. And its no way we can follow the OKC model. Unless we dont plan on making any noise in NEXT year’s free agency. If we luck up and get a star in FA (which is a stretch if we dont build a decent looking team this year) then it will negate the “Cho” method. If we are a lottery team, we wont be getting any “stars” next FA unless we overpay big time…

by focuslja on Dec 7, 2011 9:43 PM EST up reply actions

Not a bad trade idea Andrew. I would like to give Marvin a shot I think he would fit well with the uptempo style of ball we will play this year. I think Diaw would be a good fit in Atlanta and help them out. Im not sure why everyone is giving up on DJ staying? DJ was our most consistant player last year and played at a high level under Silas. I think DJ and Kemba can play togather succesfully. DJ is our best offensive player and i dont think we can afford to lose offense.

I agree that DJ will be fine staying in Charlotte...

…but remember that this will be the year we try to keep him. I think he is due a contract at the season’s end…right?
If he doesn’t want to stay…we get nothing for him…I’m just keeping that in mind.

Keep in mind…I just saw a need on another team and was working a beneficial trade for both sides.

He will be a RFA at seasons end.

As long as he doesn’t play at an all star level this year, we should have no issues matching any offers for him.

I'm gonna live forever, I'm never gonna die. The only thing I fear is I'm never gonna fly.

by Charlotte Bobcat on Dec 7, 2011 2:43 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

OK...but I'm curious how many teams will be wanting him at season end...

Trying to stay cheap…could become Felton 2.0 and we get nothing for him if someone offers him something above what we feel he’s worth.

Bobcats Basketball is my only pro sports passion...

by andrewlail76 on Dec 7, 2011 2:49 PM EST up reply actions

We should be shopping him to contenders.

While he’s a decent player, he’s nothing that is necessary for our future. He’d be a nice piece to BRING BACK once our contender is built, but the amount of money I see him making as a FA is way more than we need for someone who we only need as a Matt Carrol type role player in the future.

by Panthers FTW on Dec 7, 2011 3:50 PM EST up reply actions

Wow

You have high hopes for us…and low hopes for DJ huh? I agree we should send him to the Lakers. Maybe they will give us a later pick for him.

by focuslja on Dec 7, 2011 9:46 PM EST up reply actions

That's almost exactly what I think.

We do this rebuilding process correctly, we should be that good. And I don’t see DJ ever finding a role in the NBA other than 3-point specialist, so I don’t have much hope for DJ. And yes, a trade with the Lakers will be fine, because we need to get something out of DJ, and a 1st round pick is waaay better than nothing.

by Panthers FTW on Dec 8, 2011 5:37 PM EST up reply actions

Oh my...

That would be nice, but what kind of money will he require and would he rather go to a team, looking for a ring.

He has plenty of time to fit the bill, gain confidence under Silas, and possibly increase his value when his contract is up…

I don't understand the Marvin Williams love.

He’s never done anything in a totally up-tempo environment that is just raw athleticism for the most part in Atlanta. Wasting our money on someone like him would be a lateral move that is totally unnecassary.

by Panthers FTW on Dec 7, 2011 3:52 PM EST up reply actions

I was just thowing up a what-if option...

I’m nobody, but this is sure gaining some steam. It let’s you know where the Bobcats fans stand. I like DJ and I hope he stays.
I was simply stating the need that Atlanta is voicing and I wanted to see how many would send DJ up the river. Remember the hate everyone had for Felton…
Remember the hate everyone had for DJ being our starter during the Brown era?
Now…I’m not really feeling the love now that Kemba is here.
I’m dying to see them on the floor together.

It may be because I'm a UNC fan,

but I still believe that Williams has some untapped potential. I mean, like scoring 30-40 points a few times out the year. He just doesn’t look like the same player he was in college. I don’t know whose fault that is, but I think everyone on the Hawks’ roster can do better on a new scene. They’ve held on to that team for too long and it’s time to blow it up.

I'm gonna live forever, I'm never gonna die. The only thing I fear is I'm never gonna fly.

The Hawks are played out

J-Smoove either needs a new supporting cast, or a change of scenery. Marvin Williams…same thing. I think players like Williams needs a coach like Silas. Any player that falters or gets swept by the wayside needs a coach like Silas to boost confidence.
I hope they do amnesty Williams so we could have a crack at him

I think Silas is one of the best coaches in the league

as far as getting a player to play to their strenghts. It’s why I’m excited to see Biyombo and think he will do well. I really think he could work wonders with any under 30 who has been struggling in their career.

When has Atlanta

EVER been an uptempo team? True they had alot of athletic players. Probably one of the most athletic teams in the NBA but they have always been a team to run down the whole shot clock. Ever since Dominique. So Marvin hasnt been in an uptempo environment yet

by focuslja on Dec 7, 2011 9:49 PM EST up reply actions

Marvin Williams is great idea

A trade for Marvin Williams would be perfect for a hole at backup 3. I feel like Atlanta has been holding him back because of their logjam at the forward position. He can also play 4 if absolutely needed. However, Atlanta might amnesty Marvin Williams and then we could just sign him as free agent. I am sure he would love to come back to NC.

For the sake of argument...

This is the only way I’d really want to add him here. Truth is that I want something for nothing. I want to ship out Diop’s contract…Najera’s contract…and I want to bring in a solid bench player and a pick. It won’t happen, but I can wish it.

We’ll all see what goes down this Friday!

I like getting swept up in the frenzy of pre-FA and rosterbation...

But the best option for the Bobcats right now, is to simply follow through with their plan. Sit on your hands this FA. Get Kwame back, but don’t give away the bank. Save money, let Boris expire, wisely obtain talented young’uns through the draft, and coach em up till their champions!

Going crazy in FA would be fun as hell. For right now. But we’d regret it when we’re bogged down with bad contracts and mediocre player, and meddling in the East between the 9th spot and the edge of the lottery picks. So, let’s curb our enthusiasm and be conservative. Stick to the plan Jordancats!

I would be averse to trading a 24 year old who just averaged 15, 6, and a steal. Although, we might have to..

"With the third pick of the 2006 NBA Draft, the Charlotte Bobcats select, Adam Morrison, Gonzaga."

by FirstCat on Dec 11, 2011 8:30 PM EST reply actions

Give him to INDY

NJ, SA.. I think the fans are in total confusion. Y? Because we dont know if we want capspace or not. We have an chance to eliminate Tyrus AND rid ourselves of Maggette. But are we? We When OKC/SEA (Im using this example bc thats whay most fans think we are going to follow, I disagree) rebuilt, they got rid of ALL their big contracts. And thats what we need to do. That part I agree on. Let Tyrus go. We can get an expiring or a smaller contract if we move him to the right squad. And Amnesty Maggette. Sure we’d suck but as a fan, I dont care if we lose convincingly or close. A loss is a lost to me. And I would understand bc we are rebuilding. Once we have that much capspace cleared up, we can start to make our team more attractive to big names by signing a player here and there. 2012 FA is our best chance at snagging something good. And if we still have Tyrus and Maggette, we wont make much noise.

by focuslja on Dec 11, 2011 9:10 PM EST up reply actions

DJ Augustin for Eric Maynor (6’3) and Cole Aldrich OR BJ Mullens…we get a center and a big guard…and the money works.

by focuslja on Dec 11, 2011 11:03 PM EST reply actions

that's definately arguable

to be a “capable” starter in the NBA you need to play defense… DJ is best served as a offensive minded backup

by adamcawa on Dec 12, 2011 9:20 AM EST up reply actions

I disagree.

The thing I want from every position is for that player to be 1 point better than the other teams player. If our PG does it by scoring 1 point and holding the other PG to 0 points, I’m fine with that. If our PG does it by scoring 30 and the opponent’s PG scores 29, I’m fine with that.

Spread across all 5 positions, that equates to a win by 5 points every game. I’m fine with that.

(Having said that, I’ll agree that it’s easier to do if you have a complete game and can actually play defense.)

by Tim Rudisill on Dec 12, 2011 10:04 AM EST up reply actions

How about a trade with Indiana?

DJ and Diaw for George Hill and Josh McRoberts…

Hill can play PG and SG. McRoberts can play SF and PF (Pacers are looking to sign and trade McRoberts).

The Bobcats need to get rid of ziop and pickup the PF that Atlanta cut and bring him in and either start are backup a Player. Ziop can"t score if he was standing under the Basket.
