Miami Heat vs. Charlotte Bobcats Preview -- Game 2

Game Overview: As if the Bobcats (and the rest of the league) don't have enough to worry about when playing the Miami Heat with the Big Three and all their fancy uniforms and shoes, what with all their dunking and making shots and what not, now they have to worry about Norris Cole. I mean, come on. Cole was drilling daggers and getting the benefit of awful (AWFUL) charge calls at the end of the game last night against the Boston Celtics like a seasoned vet. He dropped two shots right between the eyes in the waning moments of that game that were pure string music. Can it continue for a full (66-game) season and through the playoffs? That remains to be seen but he certainly looked up to the challenge last night.
The Heat were in prime position to put the finishing touches on a classic choke job as the C’s were roaring back in the final quarter and had the chance to cut the Miami lead down to five. That’s when Cole slid in front of Brandon Bass and the refs missed one of the worst charge/block calls you’ll see all season. (Seriously, just take the call out of the game. Remove the circle; take it out of the officials’ hands because they can’t get it right. It’s essentially a toss-up each time. It’s not that difficult but it is a bang-bang play. If you’re not going to review each one because that would take forever, just take it out of the game. Make guys defend.)
But credit Cole, he made the effort to get in position, he just didn’t. The officials made the call and it benefitted the Heat. As did having Cole in uniform because you know how many Heat players made shots from the field after that play? One, Cole. The only other points scored by anyone else were two free throws by Dwayne Wade. Under three minutes, in crunch time, Cole hit three jumpers and made two free throws to seal the win….decent draft pick.
And we haven’t even mentioned the Heat have the two best finishers in the game, the best player in the game, and Chris Bosh who everyone loves to kill but would kill to have a player like him on their team. The Heat also look a little pissed off. What they did to Dallas on Christmas day was scary. Sure, Dallas looked old and tired, and the Heat wanted to prove something that day, but it looks like the Heat want to prove something this season.
That makes this matchup against the Bobcats tonight interesting. These are the games that elite teams with a killer instinct come out and extinguish all hope of an upset early, and keep pouring it on. There is sure to be a good crowd in Time Warner Cable Arena tonight. The crowd for opening night was great and 100% behind the Bobcats. I’d expect to see a few more visiting team’s jerseys in the stands tonight but the place will still be full. If Miami comes out and imposes its will on Charlotte early, it could be a long night for the Bobcats. The problem is stopping LeBron James, Wade and Bosh. The other problem is the Bobcats don’t really have anyone who can do that.
Miami isn’t overpowering inside, but we all know the Bobcats’ situation down low and teams don’t really need to be overpowering. Bosh is a tough cover for the Cats down low and particularly for Desagna Diop, because he moves. Boris Diaw will no doubt spend some time on Bosh as well and that’s not much better for the Cats. What I’ve seen out of a slimmed-down D.J. White is encouraging. If he can stay out of foul trouble he might be able to bother Bosh. If Byron Mullens can play as well as he did in the opening game all season he’ll be a huge get for Rich Cho and company offensively. Spreading the floor by making those outside jumpers will help the rest of Charlotte’s offense.
But let’s face it; if it comes to shutting down Chris Bosh then Charlotte fans should consider themselves lucky. Wade and James are going to look to run and punish from the get go. Corey Maggette and Gerald Henderson are both athletic enough to stay with those two, but the offensive prowess of those two Heat players is just tough to contain. Your best hope is to still make James, and Wade really, fire from the outside and keep them from slashing to the basket and worse, getting to the free throw line.
Injury Report: Tyrus Thomas is still out tonight and will not play. D.J. Augustin is nursing a sprained ankle but will play tonight. Augustin said he’s not confident of how well he’ll be able to move laterally. Eduardo Najera and Reggie Williams are both out with their knee injuries.
Key Matchup: Gerald Henderson vs Dwayne Wade and Corey Maggette vs LeBron James. Simple enough, right? As much as I’d like to put D.J. or Kemba Walker vs. Noris Cole (Mario Chalmers is still the starter, for now) stopping the Heat still comes down to containing these two guys. If James is allowed to be effective in the post it’s certainly going to be an even longer night.

The Heat played last night and I don't expect Cole to ball out two nights in a row
Outside of Norbel, the Heats’ front line doesn’t put any fear in my heart. Hopefully, Charlotte can feed the post in hopes of opening up things for the perimeter shooters. The crowd will probably be pretty pro-Heat tonight. I look forward to the days when people will fill TWC Arena to root for the home team when good teams from major markets come to Charlotte.

if we have the oppurtunity to get drummond or davis, we have to take it, because they’re as close to sure things as it gets
if we lose out on them, that’s when we start thinking about what other needs we have and who is part of our future and who isn’t
It's still debatable if he's that starter or not,

I doubt it...
our key to at least keeping this close is to shut down one of their 3 and keep their bench players from doing too much. Our bench is slightly better in my opinion. Plus this would be a good night to implement the zone defense. Mia struggle BAD agains the zone last night. DJ White should also be all in Bosh’s grill. And let Bismack play Bosh also. I mean he does have 6 fouls to use
I think Hendo will really bother Wade.
He’s got a marker board with 20 noses on it that he wants to cross out this year.

This is true…i know we atleast have the athletics to play with them. The way the Heat are playing is how Silas wants us to play. Full Speed 100% high energy running up and down the court. They played last night we got fresh legs might be enough to keep us competitive. Im just hoping Bizsmack knocks one of Lebrons dunks layups or shots into the 5th row

I will be happy if
we execute our game plan and just work as hard as we can against the heat.
The heat look pretty formidable at the moment, and I think we are a very long shot to win (we would need alot of things to go our way).
I am hoping for a close game all the way through – at least be close enough to give ourselves a chance to win near the end.
Any chance of BB getting a little more game time tonight? Diop may not be as effective tonight against a faster more agile frontline (especially when they move Bosh to C, and LeBron to PF). BB could maybe get some time against Anthony or Bosh?

To be fair we are benefiting because of the NBA playing favorites.
They had to throw Miami and the Lakers in our faces at the start of the season. So the Heat are probably pretty tired and we are benefiting. I not complaining, just saying that the NBA is horribly run.

Im not sure but he might go back to GA when the season ends…im sure he will be in Charlotte some during the offseason though to work out with teammates and use the facility.

Most likely at least for a little bit. Cam is a very driven individual so id expect him to be somewhere working out at all times. If he is in Charlotte he has chance to work out with teammates and use the Teams facilitys at his own peril

Great first half, turnover fest 3rd quarter. Fantastic game by Hendo. Bismack showing the potential. Heat got the benefit of the doubt quite a bit from the refs (except for that dunk off Hendo’s head). Maggette…. ouch. DJ White got his shot blocked a LOT right at the rim. Fun game. Better than I expected. I expect to see a lot more Diop and Bismack on Friday. I’m scared of Sunday.
I don’t understand how people can jump on the Heat bandwagon. So smug and obnoxious. I hope the Bobcats never act the way the Heat do on and off the court.
I realize this team is young, but...
that was some of the worst D I’ve seen in the final few minutes of a game. Time and time again, the Heat were getting to the rim for easy layups or dunks. I agree with the above comments that Byombo should have been in the game the last few minutes, and especially on the last Heat possession. With all of that said the Bobcats may have a bright future.

Hopefully, Silas will earn more trust in Mullens, Kemba, Biyombo and make adjustments in his rotation as he learns his new roster better. He wasn’t afraid to change the starting lineup mid last season. I think he will do the right thing in due time.

Paul Silas is still learning the players roles for this team. I think as the season goes on the rotation will be changed dramatically.

I agree.
It’s only the 2nd game. I agree with some comments here that I wouldn’t have gone with 5 he stuck with down the stretch (basically the original starters), but I have faith that he will learn who earns the most burn in clutch time within a few weeks.

Why did they look to score with so much time left on the clock. I thought they should have run some of it down.
I guess DJ saw an inch of space and figured now or never.

Well I just checked the Box Score
and some of the comments (Im at work by the way: for those wondering). And I was glad to see that the team is performing well so early in the season. This just means that once Reggie Williams can get some burn over UPS and Carroll, we’ll be a whole lot better than advertised. Im am truly Impressed by Hendo and DJ. So far Im thinkin they might the top 10 PG/SG combos. Tho its only been two games. I was also impressed with BB’s statline. I could tell by the Box score that the lineups werent right. And those who blame this loss strictly on coaching my be right. But at the same time I cant see Silas benching two players with 20pts just to put the rookie in. So I wont be too hard on Silas. The most impressive (tho not surprising) thing I saw was DIAW almost getting another triple double with 16 and 16. I hope Williams does have a speedy recovery. At least 9ppg from him would be a huge help judgin by the looks of thinks. As I have said, we will probably be in the playoff hunt. We def should let Mullens get run at PF while Tyrus is gone. Im trying to fit alot of stuff in one post until I get off so excuse me being all over the place. Oh and am I the only one who kinda hopes Tyrus is gone sometime soon? He def doesnt fit the mold…

Better than his game. He killed the first half but was the key offender of the 3rd quarter.
I won't send packing Tyrus just yet...
But I gotta tell ya, his absence has NOT been felt these past two games. And I remember quite a few experts basically saying he was our best player (which I definitely didn’t agree with). It will be very interesting (and a bit concerning) to see how he fits into the lineup when he gets healthy.

TT is a MUCH better defender than DJ White. And more athletic. Doesn’t get stuffed cleanly at the rim the way White does.

Ive been a fan of diaw forever and hope we keep him. His skill set is way to vauable to this team. everyone say maggs and jack were black holes but i dont think i can ever recall TT passin up an opportunity to shoot a 18 footer. He stops the offense too much. Love the guy but i’m sure we can get something for him

The players with the biggest totals in the score column (Hendo, Boris, DJ, Kemba) all had the largest number of turnovers.
Maggette didn’t produce the stats, but he did appear to be a good leader.
This Bobcats team has potential.
