Charlotte Bobcats vs. Milwaukee Bucks preview -- Game 1

Today's Tunes:

Sufjan Stevens - Detroit, Lift Up Your Weary Head! (Rebuild! Restore! Reconsider!)

Game Overview: Well, 'tis the new season. The old has been excised, and mostly the young remain. Gerald Wallace and Stephen Jackson will of course be missed (varying person-to-person, obviously), but the team has moved in the necessary direction of rebuilding. It will be ugly, especially in the lockout-shortened season to come, which is short on preparation and sure to be (though well-intentioned) rushed basketball. Turnovers will skyrocket, even more for a team like Charlotte, whose youth and task of integrating new players will not be a smooth transition. I'm not sure what you're expecting tonight, but just to be safe, go ahead and lower those expectations a notch or two.

As with the case for all of the season, the focus will be on the Bobcats main pieces tonight. How does D.J. Augustin play as he tries to keep the starter's reins from Kemba Walker? Does Kemba have the court vision and passing touch he's said to have? Will Corey Maggette halt ball movement from getting to the young fellas? Is Gerald Henderson's range improvement legitimate? How much of an effect will Biyombo have? Etc, etc.

The visitors hail from Milwaukee, led by Brandon Jennings and Andrew Bogut. Jennings is a shoot-first point guard with unimpressive passing and subpar ability to finish at the rim, yet also doesn't shoot the ball exceptionally well either. But Jennings does easily have the talent to improve. He's extremely quick and can slip past defenders easily and has good ballhandling skills. Bogut is a strong, quality big man, when healthy. Unfortunately, he's had many problems, most recently his right elbow, after a freakish mid-air collision, which resulted in a nasty dislocation of the elbow, sprained wrist and broken hand. That was two seasons ago. It ended that season for him a tad early, and the following year he returned, only to have to sit out again after arthroscopic surgery to remove "loose particles and scar tissue." Regardless, he rebounds and defends well, and is adept on offense. Honestly, simply being seven feet tall and having arms gives the Bucks a clear advantage over the Bobcats, who will start Boris Diaw at center. Milwaukee should get more than a handful of extra possessions. DeSagana Diop will be sure to see plenty of time, as will Byron Mullens, as the team's only seven-footers. Diop's being out-of-shape hurts, but he's still tall and can rebound, and Bogut won't especially test his quickness. Still, Bogut has plenty of post moves and skills on both sides of the ball to take on whatever Charlotte throws at him.

But then again, this is the Bucks, who run a 'Larry Brown if he didn't wish long jumpers would die a bloody death'-esque system: it's slow, point guard-heavy, and scores inefficiently. The swapping of Stephen Jackson for Corey Maggette can't hurt too much, with Jackson being a better facilitator and better three-point shooter. With luck, Stephen Jackson will permit the Bucks to space the floor for Jennings to become more a more effective playmaker.

Injury Report: Tyrus Thomas hasn't practiced since his ankle injury in the first exhibition game, so I wouldn't expect him to play today. In his stead, D.J. White will probably get the start. Corey Maggette should also be in the starting lineup, after nursing some small back issues. Of course, Eduardo Najera and Reggie Williams are both out with their knee injuries.

Star-divide

Key Matchup: Brandon Jennings vs. D.J. Augustin & Kemba Walker - In last year's meetings between the Bobcats and the Bucks, Jennings demolished the Bobcats, averaging 26 points in the three meetings, including one triple-double. Though both are smaller than Jennings, Kemba stays in front of his man better, from what I've seen in the preseason so far. If Jennings can be cut off from turning the corner driving to the paint, his effectiveness can be limited.

Fun Stuff! The Bobcats released their media guide as a PDF for the first time, which is very cool. One of my favorite fun facts was from Byron Mullens: "when speaking to children, [he] tells them to enjoy life because it goes by fast..." It doesn't mention Mullens having any children of his own.

I think the key to this game is containing / restricting Bogut.

Bogut has been rehabing over here in Australia (Melbourne for those who really care) and he has said in a couple of interviews that he is pain free and has full range of movement in his arm again (first time since he suffered the injury).
This doesn’t bode well for us in defense with Gana being overwieght and slow, and Diaw being undersized in comparison. As above Bogut has an array of shots from the post, and is an able passer as well. The Bucks tend to play really well when the offense flows through Bogut. He also has the ability to use both hands equally as well going for his post move which makes him harder to guard.

On our offense I am interested to see how Diaw goes – his ability to go all the way out to the 3pt line and make beautiful plays for others is going to test Bogut – he is not in his comfort zone when working a long way from the basket. If Diaw aggressively looks for his shot early passing lanes for easy shots in the paint for cutters may open up as he draws Bogut out further than he likes.

Might be a good test of Biyombo to give him some playing time on Bogut as well. Bogut will make him work hard and he could learn alot by playing against a quality legit 7-footer, and I think he also has the strength to battle for position with Bogut and make things a little tougher for him. His problem will be staying out of foul trouble.

On a side note it will be interesting to see how much time Kemba and DJ split at PG, and when they are on the court together if they take turns running the offense / playing off the ball. Will be interesting if the game is close to see who Silas trusts to take the keys and run the offense as well.

Other than that it will be interesting to see the play of our younger players, and hopefully we can put up a great first up effort and get a win.

I actually think

with the addition of Higgins, (who I dont think will play much this game if at all) we’ll see more of him in the 2 PG rotation than Kemba and DJ. Which I would say is smart.

I think Diaw

Playing well and efficiently tonight is going to be key for us. Course, I suppose that will be the case for most of our games from here on out. lol

Melbourne

I’ve been to Perth and Sydney a few times due to work and vacation. How is Melbourne compared to there in your humble opinion? I know this is hella random. LOL. I just love it in Australia because the people seem to enjoy life so much and are really laid back and of course the females love the brotha’s out there. LOL.

Never been to Sydney (apart from a flight stop over flying to the states)

but I have been to Perth. The biggest thing that sets Melbourne apart from the rest of Australia’s cities is the sporting culture – we have some ripping venues to watch sport here (I live in Geelong which is around 45min down the highway from Melbourne).

Going down to the MCG and watching a football game (Australian Rules) with 80,000 other fans is pretty awesome. Good shopping, theatres, restraunts and night clubs / bars as well. Also close to the Great Ocean Road, Bells Beach and the surf coast. Pretty good place to go.

Predictions

Diaw: will do pretty good at center. Bogut will have to play inside bc I cant see him handling the ball well against a SF/PF…14pts…7rebs…5assts

Kemba: I think he will have a bigger game than DJ. And he can really flex against Jennings being that Jennings isnt really that tall. Cant predict the stats but he will impress (at least from a scoring prospective)

Maggette: Will somewhat return to form. Imma go out on a limb and say Maggette has OVER 16pts. and Imma say 6rebs and a 3assts to go along with that…

We still need scoring and hopefully we can bring somebody in this week to fill that void. But Im going to give us the win bc of the x-factor: Derrick Brown…this kid has new life in such a young career and yes he does put me in the mind of a young Wallace. He not only shows effort but its what I call PRODUCTIVE EFFORT. He will have a nice game…8pts and 8rebs and I predict he will hit at least one long range shot..

I'm excited the season's starting

It’s nice to watch Bobcats games again. I might go the game tonight. Working on plans; still haven’t decided. If not, I’ll be right here on the game day thread blogging with you folks.

Hopefully we can play decent tonight. We’re going to get abused and demoralized come Wednesday.

Did anyone see the new NBA commerical yesterday that showed DJ Augustin comminting a turnover?

I was really excited to see a Bobcat on a national NBA commercial and than the Bobcat commits a “turnover”. It is what it is I guess…

The Bucks have a pretty nice squad. I could see them locking down the 5th or 6th seed. I look forward to seeing how the Cats defend Bogut.

i was thinking the same thing when that commercial came on

f course they would show us turning the ball over…i mean wtf…they could have esily just had DJ throw it in to Lebron, not have him steal it

by weezy21 on Dec 26, 2011 11:52 AM EST up reply actions

I seen one commercial where he was passing and the pass went to a different player who passed it to a different player and so forth. It was cool to see a Bobcat on a commercial

My thoughts exactly

My family and I saw the commercial and we were like, ‘seriously, wtf?’ Of course when we’re on a national televised commercial they show us turning over the ball. Way to continue our crappy perceived franchise status, NBA.

They could have easily produced the commercial without that particular shot, and still preserve the commercial’s message. I fumed on twitter, I did.

Sad thing is, like most NBA commercials, we are going to be continuously bombarded with that commercial multiple times during every NBA game we watch during the next few months.

by Roger, Roger on Dec 26, 2011 12:28 PM EST up reply actions

If its the same commercial im thinking of

Then we wasn’t committing a turnover, that was an inbounds pass, because everybody in the commercial is on different teams its hard to tell so I could see how its confusing. Either that or the paranoia is real here on RoF.

True, true

I can’t find it online anywhere yet, but I think I remember it saying “steals the inbound pass” in the commercial.

Now, I could very well be mistaken. It was a long day of basketball, family, friends, food, and drinks (add all that to the fact that I’m a very supportive and die hard defender of our team), so if someone else can remember the commercial, or find it online, then it’ll help me clear up this issue.

Or we’ll wait and see it tonight on tv somewhere.

The commentator says, "And LeBron steals the ball!"

That means that DJ’s inbound pass was indeed intercepted.

Ok, yeah

That’s what I remembered more or less.

Sigh.

Venison

I’m hoping the Bobcats have nice Venison steaks tonight for dinner. Let the young guys play and lets see what they can do. Go Bobcats!

Is this game going to be on tv?

It’s not listed for FSS or SPS on TWC.

Probably not.

Our TV coverage blows. I think NBA League Pass is having a free preview for the mext few days though.

Try searching for "NBA Basketball" on you TWC guide.

There is a channel called “Special Events” (actually, two: standard and high definition) that have tonight’s game listed.

Let's go 'Cats!

Start of the season with a W!! Wanna see Jack get pissed and melt down. Wanna see the DJ/K-Dub combo outplay Jennings. Wanna see Bogut struggle against the length of the Biz. These are my Christmas wishes! And a life-ending tomahawk throwdown by UPS!

by mives36 on Dec 26, 2011 1:09 PM EST reply actions

So am I.

I just don’t se it happening, if there is one thing that motivates Jax more than money it’s sticking it to one of his old teams. And you know he is pissed.

I’m so glad its finally back! Bobcats basketball! Yeah it won’t be a pretty game (or season, for that matter), but I can’t wait to see our young guys get some action. I’m gonna go ahead and say Kemba will be the rookie of the year. And yeah, that commercial was bullshit!
