How to Survive a Rough Season

The lockout is over. Free agency is just about done. Games are under a week away. A lot to look forward to, right? Probably not if you're a Bobcats fan.

Let me be frank. I love this team to pieces. Other than the Raptors, my hometown squad, the Bobcats are the only team whose games I simply must watch. Blame Ben for sucking me into this whirlpool of hilarious front office decisions and fan favorites.

Since I started watching the Bobcats religiously, I've seen two "franchise" players (notice the quotes!) be traded away for seemingly nothing. I've seen a team that looked to be a perennial 7th and 8th seed become a laughing stock of inexperienced kids and misfit toys. I've been stripped of Shaun Livingston. I've had to watch Tyrus Thomas go through Tyrus Thomas injuries. The quotes of Stephen Jackson are no more. The reckless dynamo that is Gerald Wallace was traded. Larry Brown was fired. Jordan became a villain during the lockout. Things have gone so far downhill that I'm beginning to question my love for this franchise.

Star-divide

But I've been here before. You've been here before. The Bobcats have an all-time winning percentage of .387. That's third worst in the league, behind the Memphis Grizzlies and Los Angeles Clippers. This really isn't anything new.

So what is there to look forward to? Jordan seemed intent on exclusively generating revenue when he first purchased the team from Robert Johnson in 2010. He treated his players as advertisements. They all wore his shoes. As great of a player as Jordan was, he has no eye for talent but insists on having a say in every decision the franchise makes. And if there was a way for Jordan to cut costs, he'd do it before you could blink.

But late last year, we saw a change. Something awoke from within Jordan (probably financial losses) that altered his vision for the Bobcats. No longer was he content with the status quo, with being a mediocre team. To generate revenue effectively, you need a winning team. And the only way to build a winning team in a small market is through the draft.

Crash was unexpectedly dealt to the Portland Trailblazers for youth and expiring contracts. Dante Cunningham proved to be a decent role player in spot minutes, and the pick acquired in the trade eventually led to Bismack Biyombo.

And then Jordan hired Rich Cho. Cho has an excellent (albeit short) resume themed around building and patience. His reputation around the league is encouraging: he's ardent but collected in his approach, and innovative in how he evaluates talent and roster moves. Paul Allen messed up by letting him go, and Jordan capitalized. I sometimes wonder if Jordan was captivated by Cho's tenacity in the Gerald Wallace negotiations. Nevertheless, hiring Cho may have been his best decision yet.

So it's not all bad. Cho reportedly had a lot of say in who the Bobcats drafted, and came out big with Kemba Walker (whom after one preseason game looks like he may have been a steal at 9), and Bismack Biyombo (whom may end up being among the defensive elite in the NBA). The roster has been stripped to the bones. Contracts are mostly short and manageable, youth is prevalent, and the team is poised to build with Cho at the helm.

Look, it's going to be ugly. There's absolutely no doubt about that. The Bobcats might win 15 games if they're lucky this season. That's not to say they're heading in the wrong direction, nor is it any reason to get upset. This is the healing process after dumping the abusive partner. It's going to hurt. You're going to want to complain and say things like "Crash wouldn't have done that!" or "Man, Hendo can't give us the quotes that Jax could." Heck, you might even drop an "I sure miss Ammo."

Don't fret, Bobcats fans. I hate to be cliché, but here's a bunch of clichés. Every cloud has a silver lining. We're all in this together. You can only go up once you've hit rock bottom. Patience is a virtue.

You get the point.

Keep your heads up, friends. It can only get better. And it will.

My silver lining:

Our awful season that’ll lead us to a high pick is going to be shortened. The fact that the first and most painful stage of our rebuilding process falls on a season that will be 2 months and 16 games shorter than normal could not have worked out better. I’m still very very excited to see Kemba, Bismack, and co getting NBA action and getting a glimpse at what we have to build our team around.

by JDeLong42 on Dec 21, 2011 9:17 PM EST reply actions

One thing we should remind ourselves,

Is that our young players are going to have a lot of playing time. They’re going to have the opportunity to work with each other, and they’re going to have the opportunity to face massive, demoralizing losses together. They’re going to have a few veterans to mentor them along, and they’re going to have a staff that is going to work well with them to help improve their game. We’re going to be in a really good position come a season or two. We’ll have a nice young core who’ve been together for a good while, we’re going to lose a lot of super terrible contracts, and we’re going to be in a financially good position to acquire more good talent.

It’s going to be ugly this season, no doubts about it. I consider myself slightly more optimistic than most of you guys regarding our season, but I do know it’s going to be a rough, ugly, and long season (despite it actually being a shorter season, lol).

Lastly, I’d just like to ask folks, especially the more casual fans, to not simply disregard our games and give the team a cold shoulder. The Bobcats are still our team, those guys are our players, and they do need our support. We’re going to lose a lot of games this season, but that doesn’t mean they won’t be entertaining. Amidst the terrible losses I’m pretty sure we’ll encounter a few games that are going to be pretty fun to watch, as well as a few nice wins. To quote andrew:

Wait for it.

We are going to be exactly where we thought we would be going into this season...

Not very good. We do, however, have plenty to look forward to. This shortened preseason and subsequent shortened season will be to our advantage during the early games. Old pro’s need time. We don’t have many of those. Our youth will be quite an advantage over the first 15 games or so. Then reality will set in. We will struggle. I am on board with the rebuilding process, as painful as it may be. I think we will look back on this season as the turning point of our franchise. Will it end in championships? Probably not, but I will applaud the fact that we are finally trying to do things the right way. We will have a winning squad in Charlotte. It just may come later than sooner, if you know what I mean…

But thanks for the encouragement. The Bobcats did a lot in this last week or so to get the team together. They signed Williams, Mullens, & Biyombo. Cho is not going to allow an unfinished product to be put on the floor. MJ is working with what he has. We all know the draft is a crap shoot and unfortunately, the Bobcats have had the worst luck. I still applaud them for not standing pat. That’s all you can ask for as a fan.

Definitely not rooting for us to lose

…but it’s looking inevitable. In picking in the top 4 and getting one of Davis, Jones, Barnes, or Drummond; I guarantee our pain will be worth it.

by jnrumsey on Dec 22, 2011 8:19 AM EST reply actions

This is what I mean

its not “enevitable”. Its a big chance of it happening but its not “enevitable”. If the roster is so bad that we have to use words and phrases like “enevitable” and “sure thing” about us being terrible, then maybe we do need to contract. Or maybe we do need to trade all our players. Its a big difference in a fan saying “its a strong possibility” and “its enevibitable” like its a law of science…

by focuslja on Dec 22, 2011 12:31 PM EST up reply actions

Why are you quoting "enevitable"?

Because it’s spelled inevitable, as OP wrote it.

i normally don’t approve of correcting spelling, but in this situation it’s hilarious

also, i agree it’s virtually inevitable… Kemba and Biyombo our are only real wildcards (plus maybe some of the new no names), with everyone else we know exactly what we’re getting and what they offer is a lottery team. I can’t imagine Kemba/Bismack are going to get us enough extra wins by themselves to do much better than second to last in the east.

And don't we have another extra pick in 2012?

That’s 4 1st round picks in 2 years, 4 of them top 10 picks. If we get a guy like Harrison Barnes in the draft (who you know Jordan would live to have), and Kemba and Bizmack pan out, that’s a solid core of young players.

The only kink in this plan is that Kemba seems like a shoot first PG… Which is fine for a roster that lacks scores. But If we draft a guy capable of putting up a lot of points, we might be better off with a better distributor at PG.

This is how I roll, animal print pants out control.

by southtunnel on Dec 22, 2011 9:17 AM EST via mobile reply actions

Who knows how Kemba will be as a distributor

I think he will at atleast average 6 APG when and if he starts. But its not like thats great for a PG.

by TS BOBCAT on Dec 22, 2011 9:22 AM EST up reply actions

Maybe, but he seems more natural as a scorer

by southtunnel on Dec 22, 2011 12:22 PM EST up reply actions

He did what he had to do...

You are a shoot first PG on a team full of non-scorers…
How often have we had this argument where we say we need more assists? When no one on the team will move around, or has the ability to consistently hit shots…the PG, if they have the talent, has to score the points.

by markdog333 on Dec 22, 2011 5:04 PM EST up reply actions

We've seen him be shoot first when he's had to shoot first

We don’t have much knowledge of how he’ll handle a team with other capable scorers.

He had about 4 apg last year didn’t he? That’s not awful for the NCAA where he’s taking most of the shots as well.

by Basketball Rambler on Dec 22, 2011 9:29 AM EST up reply actions

The problem is he will still be shoot first here

I just hope people dont turn into MP’s and not give him a chance to see if he can distribute once we have a good team around him.

by TS BOBCAT on Dec 22, 2011 9:42 AM EST up reply actions

Well there's "chance" he'll be great at doing a number of things he's never been asked to do

But until he does it then there should be room for skepticism.

And who knows, maybe we draft a guy who can create his own shot and wind up with two scorers… not a bad problem to have.

This is how I roll, animal print pants out control.

It's pretty awful for a guy who had the ball 99% of the time on a team with plenty of other big recruits.

Walker had 4.5 apg last season and 5.1 apg the season before

The NCAA assist leader last season had 7.7 apg. No NCAA player has averaged double figure assists since 1995.

You’re right if you say that Walker’s been a shoot first player for his career. You’re right to be skeptical of his ability to make plays for his teammates at an elite level when he’s never done it. I’m skeptical too. To say his assist numbers are “pretty awful” ignores reason and context. There’s every reason to be skeptical. There’s no reason to be so overly dramatic with the skepticism.

I don't know if Kemba will ever be a capable passer in the NBA.

And until I see it, I’ll always be bullish about his ability to consistently set his teammates up.

However. if his ability to score translates as well as we hope, I can see Kemba becoming a Russell Westbrook-esque player, especially along side another star.

I just dont get that logic

Just because someone has a shoot first mentality does not mean they do not have the athletic ability to be a good passer. A mentality can be changed if that is what a coaching staff wants. And sense he has always had a shoot first mentality we have no idea if passing is part of his skillset.

Agreed

Considering MJ is looking to free up money for the offseason, the best thing to do is hold onto Diaw and let him expire. The only exception would be if we were offered a 1st rounder for him and didn’t have to take back any contracts. I see that as highly unlikely.

I’ll defend his argument, although probably not from the same angle he was approaching it. Diaw at least is expiring so we don’t have to be super-motivated to move him but Tyrus has a big contract and if we could move him without taking back a similar crappy contract, I’d be listening.

My heart pumps no Kool-Aid

by Bring Back Primoz on Dec 22, 2011 1:37 PM EST up reply actions   1 recs

The problem I have with that is this:

Sure, we’d get his contract off the books, but really, what good is it? We’ll have all this cap room and no reason to spend it, and with the salary floor, we’d probably end up having to sign people that aren’t good for what we’re trying to do. What use is all the cap room is we can’t sign a star and we’re not in a position to make a Pacers-esque FA splash. We’re better off sitting on Thomas’s contract and hoping we can mold him into a player that will really help us in the future.

by Panthers FTW on Dec 22, 2011 2:51 PM EST up reply actions

Using that logic

why not just sign every player to a contract that’s more than what they are worth?

No, we need to get rid of all the bad contracts. Period. Even if we aren’t able to sign a star, if we at least pay properly for talent, we will be in a far better position on the court, in regards to new FAs, and financially.

by Tim Rudisill on Dec 22, 2011 3:14 PM EST up reply actions   1 recs

Since we've already signed the contract, we might as well see what he's got.

Like it or not, other than our rookies, he’s got the highest upside of anyone on the roster. If we don’t pay him, we’ll be forced to pay someone else, and if you can find someone who
a) will be beneficial to our long term plans
b) will get us to the salary floor
c) won’t have to be overpaid to come to Charlotte
then I’ll listen. As for now, he’s not SO severally overpaid that we already need to think about getting rid of him.

I'm gonna live forever, I'm never gonna die. The only thing I fear is I'm never gonna fly.

this the only trade that makes sense

funny bc I proposed this trade over the spring. Randy Foye is expirng and he’s a combo guard. Brian Cook is ok and would play behind DJ White (who is showing that he’s just as good as Tyrus),,,they are both expiring and we rid ourselves of a another Diop like contract. Now we’d really have some cap room to make some changes. Idk if the Clippers would want to do this now bc they have Evans but Tyrus is a good trade piece and he fit the alley oop style that LAC is gonna play

I think you might have reached a little with this comment

There is no way that DJ White is as good as Tyrus..

IMO

it isnt a stretch at this point. He plays 100% every game and if he is at least halfway decent, Tyrus could lose his spot…

I'll agree right now

Tyrus has only shown me that he is injury prone. Dubz comes in, plays hard, does his job, and smiles about it. Tyrus hasn’t SHOWN me that yet. He has a superstar attitude, but no game to back it…yet
