Bobcats-Hawks preseason game recap (of sorts)

I'm not going to do a traditional recap for a preseason game, so I'll keep it brief.

  • Kemba looked good. He shot poorly for most of the night, but picked his shot selection very well and was constantly aware of where his teammates were. I liked how he was able to create in the midrange. Further, his ability to get to the line is desperately needed by this team. He was particularly -- oh, what do the kids call it these days? oh yeah -- clutch, as time wound down and he squeezed between three Hawks big men in the paint to lay up a floater over them to put the Bobcats on top. Not a perfect performance, not one to declare him the next coming of the point god over, but good. Now let's see what he can do at the end of a real NBA game, in real crunch time.
  • Tyrus Thomas went down with a mild left ankle sprain, and did not return. X-rays were negative, but he's going to sit out the following preseason game as well as a precaution.
The rest of the recap I'll leave in picture form after the jump

Loved Kemba

D.J. porbably wasnt playing as hard as he could so ot going to hold him to anything. But if I have to pessimistic about anyone its TT. I mean it is a preseason game and it is too soon to make assumptions on any player but we need a bigger and stronger PF (Biyombo) who doesnt hold onto the ball and can put his back to the baskett. Henderson looked about the same as last year but pnce again I dont think you saw him playing at a high level. And is it possible our new C Boris Diaw wants to play in his contract year?

It's a great thing we have a glut of PFs

Cause I’m starting to think that Tyrus Thomas will have a very shortened career due to that knee. Don’t think he’ll last.

Thomas isn't going anywhere.

He’s too expensive and not good enough to move in the trade market, and it’s not like we’re going to amnesty or cut him.

Sloppy but good game

The younger Griffin impressed me… he looked like he realy wants to make the final roster

We dont have to sign Ely though so we can only choose one player and it will either be Uzoh or Griffin (should be Griffin)

He will get good miniutes behind Boris and hopefully could develop into a good backup

Id believe so…Cho was in OKC until 2010 where he left to work for Portland . Mullens was drafted in 2009 so he had to be their when they made the pick.

He's basically a tall white stiff.

Good in HS where that’s all you need, mediocre in college where you can sometimes get by with just that (9-5-1 as a freshman), and then hasn’t done anything in the league because he hasn’t developed any skill to go with his size. He was decidedly not ready for the NBA when he declared, and didn’t improve in an organization noted for its patience and ability to develop projects. But he’s probably an upgrade on what we had to backup the 5 (Thomas or Biyombo?), and Silas may be able to squeeze five or ten good minutes a game out of him.

I know you like Griffin, but come on

We only have 2 PGs, 2 SGs, and 2 healthy SFs. We have 7 bigs. We MUST use the last roster spot on a guard or SG/SF. There really is no other option. What happens if Kemba, DJ, or Hendo goes down with an injury?

My heart pumps no Kool-Aid

by Bring Back Primoz on Dec 20, 2011 10:04 AM EST up reply actions

I just want the better player

Griffin is more of a SF to me and Williams will not be out that long and out of the 4 guards not hurt the only one that has ever been hurt is Henderson. Neither Kemba or DJ have ever been hurt and im talking about Kemba in college. Williams will not be out long and honestly if you want a taller PG put Boris out there. Look im not going to cuss and fight if Griffin is cut but if you take Uzoh who i personally think doesnt really offer anything to this team because he doesnt do anything but dribble the ball up the court and give it to someone else and you take him over Griffin for need then your letting a better player go and letting better opportunities for your team. But yes we need another G but it should be another FA not Uzoh.

by TS BOBCAT on Dec 20, 2011 10:11 AM EST up reply actions

Griffin is a fringe NBA player

Otherwise, he wouldn’t be scraping out a tryout on a non-guaranteed contract for one of the worst teams in the league. What good does it do to add him as the 8th big man on the roster? We need to fill the 15th spot with need because if one of our PGs gets hurt, I’d rather have Uzoh dribbling up the court than Griffin.

My heart pumps no Kool-Aid

by Bring Back Primoz on Dec 20, 2011 10:15 AM EST up reply actions   1 recs

Uzoh is a fringe NBA player as well

Im just looking at I think Griffin will offer more to the team then Uzoh. If we want to get another G find another one besides Uzoh becuase Uzoh offers nothing but a roster to an NBA team. He has no spark or does nothing well. So if you dont want Griffin then fine but dont take Uzoh over him because thats just a mistake.

by TS BOBCAT on Dec 20, 2011 10:27 AM EST up reply actions

I don't care about Uzoh at all

I’m just saying the 15th roster spot has to go to someone who can play PG in a pinch.

My heart pumps no Kool-Aid

by Bring Back Primoz on Dec 20, 2011 10:30 AM EST up reply actions

I agree

Im just willing to go with 2 because neither have a history with injuries and it is a shortened season. We only have 2 SF’s and I think that Maggette or Brown have a better chance at being injured then any guard and right now the only player on the roster that could play SF is Williams. We have no SG then can also play SF and we have no PF that can play SF. I think Paul Silas would do with Griffin what he did with Dante and make him a SF and I think Griffin can be successful at SF. My own opinion is I dont mind going in with 2 PG’s with our team because we are not looking to be competitive and I would rather take the best player with the most potential even if there isnt a whole lot. Also if we keep Griffin it will be a one year minimmum and if Kemba or DJ go down or if Hendo or Matt get hurt before Williams is back we can just cut Taylor.

by TS BOBCAT on Dec 20, 2011 10:43 AM EST up reply actions

I understand

In a perfect world, you want a roster with 3 of each 5 positions. I think we’re too thin at PG, SG, and SF but from watching the Cats since the beginning, there always seems to be a point in the season where PGs get banged up and we are in dire straits when it happens. I would prefer a combo guard (PG/SG) because it halfway addresses our depth issues at PG and SG.

My heart pumps no Kool-Aid

by Bring Back Primoz on Dec 20, 2011 11:08 AM EST up reply actions

I know

I guess the only argument I have for that is like I said it is a short season and we could just cut Taylor if needed. We will just have to see what happens, whens cut day?

Stop with the Dio[

Signing Ely and Mullens basically is putting Diop at the bottom of the pecking order. He needs to spend some time getting into shape and rehabilitating before even stepping back on the court. Its not healthy to be in that kind of shape with that type of injury at that height. Diop will not be in front of Mullens unless he does p90x

If we drafted Biyombo to play PF then it’s a waste of a pick. PF is the most populated position in the NBA (a fact we should know thanks to our derth of PFs).

by Panthers FTW on Dec 20, 2011 1:31 PM EST up reply actions

oh i'm just talking temporarily

and even then, if we draft Drummond/Davis/Sullinger next season, should we be so lucky, what’s he gonna be then?

however, he needs to put on more weight to be a C in the NBA right now, otherwise we’re just feeding him to the lions

for his confidence and development, it makes more sense to play him at PF where he’s less likely to get injured/dominated

by adamcawa on Dec 20, 2011 1:39 PM EST up reply actions

Biyombo's BMI is comparable to other rookie centers

but all indications suggest that he’ll play the 4 for now.

Pretty much ever big coming into the NBA needs for big bigger, but his mobility, length, and strength should give him the versatility to play both positions.

We can get a back up PG…one who isn’t short and can defend most likely. We don’t need two small scoring guards…Kemba being the better of the two

Derrick Brown welcome back! 8! offensive rebounds. Diop looked awful as expected. Tryus had some nice range hope he is ok. Can’t wait to see Biz a lot of times tonight i think he gets a lock if he is in the game. Diop was always a second off from getting one and he is fat

by Panthers FTW on Dec 21, 2011 5:37 PM EST up reply actions

My take

The Bobcats have been severely lacking one thing since their inception- a player who can create his own shot. Gerald could score, Jax could score but both of them need to expend a huge amount of energy to get a look, and even then most of the time it was contested.

For whatever reason, his speed, his basketball IQ or his ability Kemba Walker is able to create his own shot and get excellent looks. The question now becomes ‘can he finish?’ personally I’m not concerned about that, but we wont know for sure until he’s in a real game with real regular season pressure, against real NBA starters.

For one day though I liked what I saw

by James Dator on Dec 19, 2011 11:29 PM EST reply actions

Actually you'd per surprised

Here is his scoring breakdown from when he was here:

66% jump shots (75% assisted)
29% close (38% assisted)
4% dunk (75% assisted)
1% tips (0% assisted)

This makes his grand total 63.5% of his scoring came off assists, 36.5% were shots he created himself. That’s really not the mark of a player who can do it on his own.

by James Dator on Dec 20, 2011 12:51 AM EST up reply actions

Here's Dwayne Wade from last year

61% jump shots (31% assisted)
30% close (38% assisted)
7% dunk (57% assisted)
1% tips (0% assisted)

So that makes his ratio 34.3% assisted, 65.7% shots he created himself. A huge difference

by adamcawa on Dec 20, 2011 8:45 PM EST up reply actions

Doesnt matter.

In 6 to 8 weeks, we’ll see what Ive been raving about with Williams. He does well creating his own shot. Im not comparing him to Kobe or MJ by no means but his game style is similar. But he can shoot the 3 alot better than them both. Again Im not comparing him to them but he can really create his own shot and not afraid to shoot. This would be great with Kemba and Maggette. I hope Mullens gets to start and Diaw goes back to PF…from what everyone was saying, he’d be more deadly if he could both pass the ball outside and inside…

I really don't want to talk about the Panthers here, but I will.

You can’t blame Cam Newton for the record. Why? Because he’s taken the league’s worst offense to one that ranks in the Top 10 in many, many other categories. The reason the Panthers are 5-9 is due to the defense, because they’ve given up so many points and are missing their star linebacker in Beason.

Honestly Micheal, if you are too entrenched in your opinion to be able to appreciate the positive strides the Panthers have made this season and are unable to acknowledge how impressive Cam Newton has been this season, then there really isn’t any reason to debate this.

Disagree all you want...but here are the stats.

Cam Newton:
Third Quarter-53/88, 713 yds, 1 TD, 6 INT, 61.4 rating
Fourth Quarter-86/154, 1,186 yds., 4 TD, 5 INT, 75.8 rating
Fourth Quarter w/score within 1 TD-40/80, 517 yds., 2 TD, 2 INT, 68.6 rating

When the heat is on, Newton runs away. I guess that makes Walker superior to him in that aspect, huh?

I honestly hope your just a sick person that likes pissing people off because I would hate if there is someone so dumb that they think Cam is a bad QB. But you are trying to tell everyone Kemba sucks whenever he has never played an NBA game.
And that Cam sucks because he cant make the worst team in the league a playoff team in one year. Your argument are the stupidest things I have ever heard and you need to learn about the sports you talk about and learn about how to evaluate talent.

by TS BOBCAT on Dec 22, 2011 4:41 PM EST up reply actions

You're not a fan, you're a troll

I usually don’t get this direct with people, but it’s very clear. If you still think Cam is a bust after he’s broken so many records and done so many great things for his team, then you’re just ignorant to the point of stupidity. Manning threw 28 INTs his rookie year. Newton is going to have most passing yards and rushing yards ever for a rookie QB. He has the most ever TDs for a QB in NFL history. He is likely going to be the first QB to ever throw for 4,000 and run for 500 in the same season. He’s accounted for more TDs than any rookie in NFL history. He’s leading all rookies in completion percentage.

You’re being ignorant and apparently can’t bear to admit the fact that you got that one wrong.

by JDeLong42 on Dec 21, 2011 8:44 PM EST up reply actions

You know who else was really high on those rookie passing lists?

Chris Weinke. The team is 5-9, and could easily end up 5-11. All he’s shown is he’s a great fantasy pick. The point of sports is to WIN GAMES. Newton hasn’t done that.

If Kemba can keep up this performance (preseason or not) and Williams finds his touch and Maggette is just a tad bit close to how he played in teh Impact League. We could be shooting for something. I still think Mullens needs to get some time STARTING at center for the first couple of regular season games.

Hawks fan here. I was @ the game tonight and Kemba reminds me of another Huskie, Ben Gordon.

Not sure if that’s a good thing or bad thing for the Cats. His most impressive moves to me was the missed dunk and and a missed layup in which he streaked in the lane past 3 Hawks and just missed.

by xavip on Dec 20, 2011 12:32 AM EST reply actions

He reminds me of Gordon

A lot as well but he plays a helluva lot more disciplined. Gordon is a chucker in love with the three ball while Kemba aggressively attacks the lane and looks to make a living at the line. They compare, but Gordon isn’t as efficient as their differences will give Kemba the opportunity to be.

It’ll keep the game at a slow pace and give our team a chance to stay in it. As seen against the Hawks, we are way too young to play at the speed they do because it leads to a ton of turnovers for us.

Buuuut, you're ignoring his positives, as I've mentioned.

Getting to the FT line is an important skill (the only reason Maggette ever got the contract he got) and he was able to create space by himself to create his own shot. Those are two HUGE pluses based on one preseason game.

by Panthers FTW on Dec 21, 2011 4:56 PM EST up reply actions

I agree, that's fine.

But if our POINT guard can do nothing on offense but drive the basket and get fouled, we’re screwed. His job is to set up his teammates for success. And “creating” a shot you jack up and brick isn’t a skillset. Any yahoo can do that.

by MichaelProcton on Dec 21, 2011 4:59 PM EST up reply actions

I agree that is a big red flag. However, different PGs do different things.

I’ll direct you to something I wrote awhile ago that addresses this:

Kemba is the player I’m most bullish about, mainly because I don’t see a role he plays if he doesn’t magically blossom into a superstar. He’s not talented enough as a distributor to play second fiddle to a star, and until I see it, we can’t be sure one way or another about his ability to score at this level. If everything goes right with him, he could become the Russell Westbrook to our Kevin Durant. If not, I just hope he’s shown enough that even if he isn’t seen as a “star” he’ll still garner enough interest to net us more assets.

by Panthers FTW on Dec 21, 2011 5:02 PM EST up reply actions

So why are you arguing with me?

Your hope is that he magically becomes a star when all the evidence suggests it’s not going to happen.

Panthers '011: This is what we've been waiting for...we get to overpay the core of a 2-14 team!

by MichaelProcton on Dec 21, 2011 5:15 PM EST up reply actions

Because I saw some very positive things in his first game.

He’s never going to become a PG known for his distribution, but if he’s able to continue doing what he did Tuesday, I think he could almost certainly become a Westbrook-esque player.

by Panthers FTW on Dec 21, 2011 5:21 PM EST up reply actions

By dashing into the lane every time he touches the ball and praying for a foul call?

He might get those whistles against the Magnum Rolles and Pape Sys and Brad Wanamakers of the world, but not against guys who will actually play in the regular season this year. And P.S.: Westbrook took exactly ONE year in the league to become an 8 APG player. When do you see Walker getting there? My vote is for never.

Personal attacks are the weapon of the ignorant.

That's hyperbole and you know it Micheal.

Getting to the FT line is a tangible skill and, to quote you,

He’s done it in 100% of the games he’s played for us.
He needs to prove me wrong and prove you right. I’m the one on the high ground here.

Westbrook also had the luxury of getting to pass to Kevin Durant his entire career. While I doubt Kemba will develop into a player who gets 8+ assists per game (and if he’s able to get a Durant-like offensive talent paired with him, he might), I can see him being able to fill up the scoreboard offensively like Westbrook.

As I look at Westbrook’s stats, I can honestly see that as a similar player he could develop into. 20+ ppg, 7+ FTA, 40%+ shooting. Will he? I don’t know, but I’m willing to hope he can.

by Panthers FTW on Dec 21, 2011 5:35 PM EST up reply actions

Maybe

But Augustin never has and never will sniff 8 APG either. And plenty of people on here defend him as a “great distributor”, basically because he doesn’t turn it over. Doesn’t do anything to create any offense either, but he’s very effective at dribbling it down and making a pass to the wing. I’m betting Kemba very quickly becomes more effective running this offense than DJ ever will. Will Kemba be an All-Star? Who knows. Is he an upgrade at PG? Definitely.

My heart pumps no Kool-Aid

Never will sniff 8, huh?

How about the last month of the season LAST YEAR, when he averaged 7.5 in the final eight games? That was also against just 1.9 turnovers for a nearly 4:1 A:TO ratio that Walker will also never touch. Too small a sample size for you? How about November of last year, when his numbers were 7.7 and 1.3 over 14 games? That’s an even more stellar 5.92 A:TO ratio. I will willingly admit Augustin has his flaws and has times where he struggles to choose between scoring and distributing, but he’s miles ahead of Walker in the department.

Sure he did it

In the final 8 meaningless games of the season! How dare I not recognize that! He averaged 6 for the season, period.

My biggest beef with DJ, and you acknowledged it above, is that he is slow in making decisions. I think his A/TO ratio is a bit overstated by some. Sure, he doesn’t turn it over much. But that’s because he is so cautious and insistent on not turning it over, that he doesn’t actually do anything positive either. 6 APG for a starter is nothing to write home about.

In fact, DJ’s best assist average only beats Felton’s rookie season(when he wasn’t starting) and I think we can all agree Felton wasn’t a great PG. I know you’re a numbers guy and the numbers say we aren’t going anywhere with Augustin as our PG. We may not with Kemba either, only time will tell. But for me, the Augustin experience has run its course.

This is a different kind of 7ft

He’s not an injury recovering old guy. He’s only been in the league for about 3yrs. So his body hasnt been through the wear and tear of other 31yr olds. Look at Anthony Parker (35 but doesnt really have an effect on his body bc he has been in the league less than Lebron). We need some type of veteran. Ely is injured. Diop just needs a year or so to get himself together plus he’s injured. Diaw’s value will drop if he spends most of his minutes at center. Anderson can take a one year contract. He’s 7ft. 250. Has a great outside shot and excellent footwork. Has been playing great ball in the euroleague so he’s warmed up and ready for play. He is what we should want Mullens to eventually be. I say we sign him for a year. It wont hurt. But Im not buying this Diaw/Center stuff. Anderson is also ready to START. BB/Mullens can back him up. Mullens needs just as much development time as BB. And judging by what everyone was saying about Thomas, he isnt ready to start at PF either.

other than being 31, whats wrong with him? He’s experienced? Check. He can score from anywhere on the court? Check. Has great footwork under the basket? Check. 7ft’r? Check. Is he better than Diop? Check. Younger than Ely? Check. Will he be cheap? Check. Do we have a GLARING need for a center? Check. Does he have a bad history of injury? Nope. Everybody on the team isnt going to be 22. David Andersen does have "Championship" experience in lesser European Leagues

but he is definately on the decline of his career and doesn’t fit with our rebuilding plans at all.
Best case scenario for Andersen would be a solid bench stretch 4 with his ability to shoot the midrange and 3pt shot, but he is at best an average defender and rebounder for his size, and is definately a finess 4 than a power 4.

I don’t see him being the answer for us at the 5 (even though he is better than Ely, and probably Diop with his conditioning issues at the moment).

Must have missed him

In his 40 games at ~10 mpg in the past 2 seasons. He has been playing pro for 13 years and a 7 foot frame is not easy to maintain ( Yao Ming is younger than Andersen). I just don’t see how adding another 4 that can play 5 is gonna do anything but sap valuable PT away from developing players. Unless as I have previously theorized, Focus is Larry Brown.

Its the same as putting Diaw

at center. I’d rather have a 7ft offensive PF/C than a 6’8 SF/PF playing center. I like the idea bc its unique but its kinda like a wildcat offense. I dont think it will last/work after a couple of games. Plus Diaw def needs to start at PF bc Tyrus isnt ready yet. Hell, I’d go as far as to say that Derrick Brown is a better PF at this point.

by focuslja on Dec 20, 2011 2:17 AM EST up reply actions

Diaw has a contract

And we have Diop/Ely/Biyombo/Brown/Thomas/Mullens also at 4/5 why do we need another? I hate to say it but if Tim Tebow works in the NFL, why can’t Point Center Boris Diaw get us above. 500 you just gotta BELIEVE. Enjoy Boris having a wide open layup and kicking it to Reggie Williams for that uncontested 3, its gonna be wacky and probably look not so good sometimes, but if we are gonna play small ball anyways why not commit fully?

He is a defender who can get under your skin and has a good mid range shot. Now that he is back healthy id love to see his explosiveness to the rim more often to get to the line and See if his 3 point range has improved. Thanks to Larry our sample size is only the end of last year and his hip limited him from being all he could be

People really need to understand

what amnesty really is.
If you amnesty him you still pay him unless someone picks him up off waivers. Saves us cap space but unless we have someone in mind for that space it’s useless to use it. Also NO ONE will pick up Diop in his current bloated condition. So we cut a player that we still have to pay with no hope in conditioning him to make him game ready for us or another team. Best thing we can do is work the shit out of him and get him in shape so that some sucker takes him in a trade.
But cutting him for artificial cap space makes no sense for us right now.

Don't you hate when facts get in the way of a good argument?

by BountyHunter on Dec 20, 2011 11:25 AM EST up reply actions

Yes, thank you bountyhunter

Amnestying Diop has been on the minds of many of our fans since we first heard about the amnesty clause, but given our current situation it makes no sense to do it. We’ll still have to pay his huge contract, so we might as well just keep him and at least get something out of him. No one, regardless of how desperate they are in need of a big, will take on DIop, especially since the poor guy’s so out of shape.

by Roger, Roger on Dec 20, 2011 11:51 AM EST up reply actions

before we found out

what kind of condition diop was in, amnestying him kind of made sense

there have been worse players

traded simply because they were expiring contracts

amnestying him next season, if we can’t find a trade partner, makes the most sense

I fell he has worth

I don’t know who said that he doesn’t but he showed @ Portland the he can play. Also he showed flashes here and could have more of a role as he gains experience. I don’t post often although I read most of the stuff here.
But to say he has no worth when you look at some of the guys we have brought in so far is a stretch.
I think the Bobcats think he’s worthy of bring back or they would have rescinded the offer they have on the table. Cunningham needs to find a better deal or sign this one before we move on.

Your "objective facts" are tinged with bias.

Based on your comments, you seem pre-disposed to focus on all the negatives from Kemba’s performance.

Instead of doing that, you should be looking at the things a rookie PG in his first real NBA action did well. He got to the FT line consistently, was able to create enough space to create his own shot, and was able to get to the rim with relative ease. All those things are positives and reasons for hope in our future PG, so it’s not time to be so critical of someone whose just starting his career.

by Panthers FTW on Dec 20, 2011 12:26 PM EST up reply actions

actually

none of his “objective facts” were facts at all, they were all entirely opinion

now, i don’t mind people presenting opinions as facts on a sports blog because it’s safe to assume that, unless they provide stats or an article link, or it’s simply a well known truth, than anything people post on here are opinions

but it’s wrong to then actually call your opinions “facts”

let’s examine, for example, the post in question:

But there is NO WAY we should be praising a 30% shooting, 2-assist night from a point guard – This is his opinion. We have all found plenty of reasons to praise Kemba. He uses numbers here to try and quantify his opinion, but it’s still an opinion.

Just continues to show that Walker is a score-first gunner with no sense at all as to how to be an NBA point guard – this is an assumption based on one game. And how can this “continue to show” anything… he’s played in a total of one… PRESEASON… game.

and we already had one of those under contract – an accepted “truth”. his first real fact, which is actually an opinion so strongly supported that it’s become fact.

Did like the performances out of Derrick Brown (who I’ve never really liked) and DJ White. – Yes, most of us did. But these are opinions.

I’m not “hating.”
I’m stating objective facts about his performance – since these weren’t actually facts, and just your negative opinion, i believe this is the definition of hating… searching for any bad that you found while ignoring the good

Instead of personally attacking him, if you disagree with something he says, argue it.

Don’t argue it in a way that says “You’re Micheal Procton, therefore you’re always negative and wrong,” but instead bring facts to the table to refute his points. Sometimes he turns out to be right about things we don’t want to admit, and sometimes he can be overly negative and you’ll just have to ignore it (such as his views on the Carolina Panthers).

nevermind, i don’t wanna insult focus in that way

by Jern Dough on Dec 20, 2011 12:47 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

why argue?

we argue to try and sway people to our side of things… it doesn’t matter how “right” we are, he will never admit he’s wrong, and instead merely waste our time arguing empty points that will end up being nowhere near what we were originally arguing about

which is exactly what he wanted because he’s a troll

No viable second wide receiver?

They’ve been starting a second-round pick there for more than a month! And improving the wins from a team that the owner literally tanked to prove a labor point isn’t very impressive. They’re going to finish with a top-eight draft choice. Meanwhile, the team with last year’s coach and a FAR less talented QB in Denver is going to win its division.

by Charlotte Bobcat on Dec 21, 2011 5:41 PM EST up reply actions

Sure!
  • In a game we led 27-14 at halftime against Detroit, Newton came out after the half and here were his drives:
8 yards, punt—>followed by Detroit TD
1 yard, punt—>followed by Detroit TD
    Interception
4 yards, punt—>followed by Detroit TD
80-yard TD drive highlighted by 58 yards from Stewart and Williams on screen passes, tied game
    Interception—>led to Detroit TD
    Interception—>game over
  • Tennessee: On a day we got 4.8 yards a carry from our backs, we lost 30-3 because Newton was abysmal. 0 TDs, 1 INT, 1 fumble, barely 50% passing, a pitiful 5 YPA, and a 62 QB rating.
  • Minnesota: After taking a 21-14 lead early in the third quarter, Newton’s drives drives:
18 yards, punt—>followed by Minnesota TD to lose lead
    9 yards, punt
8 yards, punt—>followed by Minnesota FG to fall behind
57 yard drive resulting in missed FG highlighted by 44-yard jump ball play by LaFell

I can continue if you want, but Newton’s ineptitude and turnovers have caused us to lose leads more than anything else.

You're hopeless

I’m not going to push it any further. Newton is good. He’s arguably the best rookie ever. He’s led the biggest offensive turnaround in NFL history. The team is going to triple its win total from the year before he got here. Teams don’t go from 2-14 to playoffs in one year, especially with a rookie QB and rookie coach. If faced with all that evidence you still stand by the fact that Newton is not a good QB or is a bust, than you are ignorant beyond help. I’m glad CSR banned you. And I also love you left out the part about Newton driving us into field goal range against Minnesota against the clock and positioning us for a touchdown before a fluke hold call on Steve Smith and a missed FG by Mare sealed the deal. It’s beyond pathetic to be calling Newton a bust MP. I’m sorry.

when will you realize

that our best chance at future long term success is by building through the draft

I know every single poster on here, MP included, would love for us to be a playoff team right now, but reality dictates that it’s simply not going to happen. We’re a bottom 3 team, period. That doesn’t mean that we’re not going to enjoy our Bobcats anyway and look at the bright side. The bright side of having a bottom 3 team is who we’re going to end up drafting with a high lottery pick.

Thankfully, rebuilding through the draft is our best chance at future long term success. We’re not cheering for the Bobcats to suck this season, we’re cheering for our Bobcats three years down the road to make the Finals.

by adamcawa on Dec 20, 2011 2:15 PM EST up reply actions

Exactly.

It would be my dream to go 46-20 and be a top seed in the conference. Could it happen? Sure. Will it? I would bet the life of every family member I have that it doesn’t. But you have to learn to take the good with the bad and mix in a little realism somewhere along the lines. If we are bad and end up with a good pick, that means we are in a spot to draft a franchise player to inject into the core we already have. If we make the playoffs or barely miss them, that means our current core is way above schedule and we should be making moves to compliment them. Hell, maybe this time next year we are discussing all the moves we need to make to surround Kemba with enough talent to win a title and a star would want to come to charlotte to play with him. Either way, we are Bobcat fans through and through and want what’s best for our franchise.

Your interpretation of people

Saying the team sucks is all skewed, but that’s fine. You know like I know that giving young players time to develop goes hand in hand with sucking and that goes hand in hand with getting us a high draft pick which goes hand in hand with getting a Durant, a Griffin, a Rose, or Lebron to build our team around which is what ultimately is best for the franchise. You think that hoping to make a playoff run by overpaying mediocre vets is the way to build a team and that everyone is praying on the teams downfall by being realistic.

Its no need to subliminally talk about getting him banned hoping someone will pick up on it. He’s done nothing worthy of getting banned. I personally dont agree with much of what he says or anyone else for that matter. But I respect it. a guy who isn’t on our team, who couldn’t crack the lineup on a houston team last season

we praised kemba for some of the things we saw him do, but none of us are saying he’s gonna have an awesome season because of it, either

T-Will is a secondary support cast player AT BEST. Get over it.

I’m tired of you saying “you made suggestions for doing this and that”…. we needed a young C, it was very obvious, and the front office made a move to get one… he could have come from the d-league, he could have come from anywhere, iT WAS A GLARINGLY OBVIOUS NEED THAT WE FILLED

Also, MP’s “reasons” are usually just his cynic opinions, and he doesn’t have any stats on Kemba to prove it either way. T-Will, on the other hand, does have stats to prove things. The biggest stat I see is, that while he puts up good numbers, not one coach has trusted hiim to start.

We don’t all agree on everything, but when we do disagree, we use valid arguments and statistics to back up our points. You rarely do. BUt if you’d like, we’ll go on and start posting really obvious things from now on and then praise ourselves when we get it right.

Here’s one… the Bobcats won’t make hte playoffs this year.

Here’s another… Kemba will start by season’s end.

Here’s another… we need a defensive PG

Here’s another… Tyrus Thomas won’t play for at least 8 weeks.

Here’s another… we need to sign our future star to build around in the draft because very few premier free agents are going to want to come to Charlotte

It’s kind of funny, actually, when earlier you’ve posted that you think the sole reason for free agents (particularly vets) have for signing with teams is championships, but then you expect us to go out and sign every free agent you see.

While MP can be really obnoxious, he does have good points occasionally, even if he presents them in the worst manner possible. However, much of those good points are lost in his trolling.

Kind of like you… much of your good points are lost in your pointless drivel that doesn’t need to be typed out because it’s either: obvious or rediculous.

and btw

T-Will would be a fine addition to this team to come off the bench and provide energy

but newsflash, we’re still not a good team with him

And its a difference in saying “we need a young center” and saying “we need to go after Cole Aldrich or Mullens”…not only that but I hear “we have nothing to give OKC”…its a difference in saying “we need a 3pt shooter” and “we need Reggie Williams”,,,thats all Im saying…

hmm where'd my post go

what i was saying is that

there isn’t that much of a difference in saying we need a young center and then making the leap in logic to say that we need a young center with poential who will be cheap who we’ll either need to call up from the d-league or trade with a team that has a dirth of centers

or saying that we need a young, cheap 3pt shooter who can create his own shot… oh look, there’s only 2 in free agency this year and one just got signed, who’s left? there’s reggie williams or the d-league or we make a trade.

It's not a big deal.

It’ll be sore, and it could lead to him being more susceptible to an injury in that region if he rushes back (ligament strain/tear), but he’ll be fine, and he’d probably play through it in the regular season.

even if he plays 1 minute a game

it’s still better than paying him 9 million a season or w/e it is to not even be here

let’s say you have 100 bucks… you can put that 100 bucks into an insurance policy for your mailbox, should your mailbox ever be destroyed, or you can put the money in the mailbox and let your mailman have it

Paying him

for 2rebs and no points is the same as not paying him right? He’s not gonna get many blocks with that weight and his already limited athleticism. He isnt doing even mediocre enough not to. Arenas got cut, Posey got cut, Outlaw got cut…their teams still have to pay them. Its about the SALARY CAP not the money. It doesnt count against the cap.

by focuslja on Dec 20, 2011 9:29 PM EST up reply actions

amnestying him

if we amnesty him, we STILL have to pay his full contract, minus whatever peanuts a team signs him for

outright cutting him and we owe him even more

the likelihood that he contributes by seasons end or next season is greater than the liklihood someone signs him for more than the amnesty bid minimum

by adamcawa on Dec 20, 2011 9:31 PM EST up reply actions

Well when I said Cut

thats what I meant. Being that amnestying someone isnt a real term.

by focuslja on Dec 20, 2011 9:35 PM EST up reply actions

Again...

The amnesty cut makes NO SENSE for a team already under the cap and not looking to add players that would put them over the cap.

If there’s no salary cap implication, there’s no reason to amnesty anyone. If the Bobcats are under the cap, and they fully intend to stay that why (why would they sign any available FA to a deal that puts them over the cap at this point?), then there is no need to amnesty any player. The only result is that you’re paying a player to not play. It’s a garbage idea.

And the window to use it for this season is over so it makes ZERO sense to do it now. We would have to pay him and it would still count against the cap and luxury tax. Once again, you have no idea what you’re talking about.

In Chris Paul’s rookie preseason, he ranked third in assists, behind only Steve Nash and Baron Davis. He was also an efficient shooter, ranking seventh in three-point shooting. Walker is not that kind of player, and based on his skillset and playing style, likely never will be. Further, if “proven winner” status meant anything, where is Sean May? Why wasn’t Christian Laettner a perennial All-Star? Why couldn’t Sherron Collins or Darnell Jackson stick in the league? Winning at the college level really means nothing about the kind of NBA player you’ll be.

by kittylover on Dec 20, 2011 10:35 PM EST reply actions

And that's the thing.

We are collecting what are not only players that can develop and be here for the long haul, but these are also assets we could package together in a deal for a star. Let’s say we are at the deadline and some veteran star wants to move on from his team. Dwight Howard comes to mind but it really works for anyone. Let’s say DJ averages like 12 ppg, Hendo 14 and Mullens 7. Instead of looking at it like someone had to score, teams look at it like those trades are a good opportunity to rebuild with. Look at the Paul, Anthony, and Williams trades and what those teams received. This is not saying we are making a move for Dwight Howard or that the package is as good as the real life ones, but we open up a lot of opportunities with low risk moves like these.

biz-markee

with his defense, rebounding and blocking ability…isnt he the long term answer at center here? I mean at 6’9 he has the ability to play modern day post. the giant 7 foot center who lumbers and cloggs the lane is a dying breed. they lose more years to injury, they cant account for smaller players defensivly (go right by them) and the become a dead option in most none-orlando type offenses (where you have 4 shooters and one guy stay around the rim to catch dunks). with biyombos mobility he and switch easy, get out and run and cause havoc outside the lane. if we can trust cho, then hes probably spot on with calling him a serge ibaka tyep guy. I can see a front court of biyombo- thomas- williams with a back court of henderson- walker being effective in year 2. add a potential star to the mix next year and we can see the light by year 3.

i would argue

that they’re not a dying breed, just very rare

Dwight Howard is by far the best center in the NBA and he’s the prototype big body center, only incredibly athletic to boot. Tyson Chandler, as much as some people here hate him, is also a really good center who is athletic. That’s the type of C people are looking for nowadays. There just so rare. In fact, I would say that the big bodied center has been dead since the 90’s/early 2000’s. You won’t see a Greg Ostertag in the NBA ever again.

Players like Dwight, Chandler, Gasol, Hibbert, Okafor and McGhee are gonna destroy Biyombo in the paint. All of them are very atheltic big men (even fluffy Gasol).

it's more his weight/frame

than his height and wingspan

the first time Dwight goes over the back for a rebound (or God knows Gasol… or worse Diop in practice), he’s gonna snap right in half

Tyson Chandler is garbage.

He makes next to no impact on the offensive end and will likely miss significant time with injury this year. Give me Andrew Bogut any day.

We'd never get fair value for him.

Considering right now he’s our most talented player, it’d be in our best interests to keep him.

by Panthers FTW on Dec 21, 2011 2:22 PM EST up reply actions

I agree

We’re kind of all in on him.

by Basketball Rambler on Dec 21, 2011 2:51 PM EST up reply actions

The only way to trade him

is for another head case or long contract. I had such high hopes of him breaking out this year, but it just doesn’t seem like he’ll ever get it together. I hope he proves us wrong.

by milky C on Dec 21, 2011 3:04 PM EST up reply actions

His numbers last year suggests that he should be getting starter's minutes

There are reasons for concern, but with regular playing time I think he could be an above averge player. He has a real chance to break out, and the Bobcats have to treat him like he’s ready for a breakout season, but I wouldn’t put money on it at this point.

by Basketball Rambler on Dec 21, 2011 3:16 PM EST up reply actions

I'm more concerned with his game.

He seems to settle for the jumpshot way too much. Although he can hit it at times, I was shocked to see his final shooting stats for the night after the game. Combine that with the injury, and his random tantrums and I think it’s just smart to think about moving him how. He is a PF and unless his name is Dirk, I expect him to be a banger on the inside and shoot with high efficiency.

I'm gonna live forever, I'm never gonna die. The only thing I fear is I'm never gonna fly.

by Charlotte Bobcat on Dec 21, 2011 3:28 PM EST up reply actions

I fully agree with your concerns about the jump shot.

He’s kind of like Josh Smith in that way. His penchent for the 20 footer is probably my primary concern, to be honest.

What do you think we get in a trade? Who knows, maybe the Lakers would use their trade exception to acquire him.

by Basketball Rambler on Dec 21, 2011 3:33 PM EST up reply actions

I think that's all we could hope for

unless he comes back with a strong performance like he was having early last year. I think we could package him with DJ for a late lottery pick and an expiring contract. At this point in time, I think that’s fair value for him.

I'm gonna live forever, I'm never gonna die. The only thing I fear is I'm never gonna fly.

by Charlotte Bobcat on Dec 21, 2011 3:35 PM EST up reply actions

Maybe I'm just that disgusted by

their preseason performance that I have their value lower than it should be. But it’s the same problems as last year (minus DJ not shooting as bad). But, I just think this is what the rest of the league sees at the moment. Hopefully, everyone plays at a higher level so their trading potential is greater.

I'm gonna live forever, I'm never gonna die. The only thing I fear is I'm never gonna fly.

by Charlotte Bobcat on Dec 21, 2011 3:49 PM EST up reply actions

We need to trade DJ for something at some point during this season.

He honestly doesn’t have a role on this team until we’ve gotten further into our rebuilding process, so there is no reason to resign him once his contract is up.

by Panthers FTW on Dec 21, 2011 4:47 PM EST up reply actions

I would lock him in for

6 million or less, but I don’t think he would go for it.

A. Not a word.
B. If you meant ‘dearth,’ that would be a LACK of picks. Why would we hope to swing them to a team lacking in picks?

His numbers have almost always suggested he should be playing more.

But having been coached by what, five different coaches at this point, he has never held a starting role for a full season. People have been chasing that potential for years, but at some point, we have to admit that he is what he is.

Personal attacks are the weapon of the ignorant.

If he hasn’t shown any sort of improvement in the next season or two, then it’s certainly exactly that time.

I was certainly saying the same thing last year.

But we’ve made our bed and now we have to lay in it. If you can find a scenario in which we can get rid of him and it has a positive impact on the future of our team, I’d be all ears.

by Panthers FTW on Dec 21, 2011 5:13 PM EST up reply actions

Not my job.

But his mediocre play isn’t something I have to ignore just because we can’t get rid of him. Again, that’s not how my fandom works.

I'm starting to see him as that cousin you don't want to have around

Do you follow him on twitter?

I had to unfollow his crazy ass. If he has a rough year or doesn’t mature at all, I wouldn’t rule him out of the amnesty running next summer. Realistically, the only other candidates expire next year so if we decide Tyrus isn’t in the plans and we can’t get much for him in a trade, using the amnesty wouldn’t be the worst thing.

That has a good chance of being the case.

But we’re in a position where we need to do everything we can to coax the player he can be out of him while we can. Since, as I’ve said, we’re stuck with him, now isn’t the time to be giving up.

thomas wont be traded

hes locked in with 3 more years AFTER this season, at 8-8-9 mill . he isnt going anywhere. thats why I say let him start at PF and get whatever he can give you out of him. if its junpers its jumpers. if its baby hooks, so be it. hes too lanky to bang down low so dont expect him to be. my main concern is silas as his HC. when silas had baron, he got away with everything, when silas had jackson here later on he got away with everything. paul silas wont be able to pull in any bad seeds and put them in their place when needed.

on the other hand if we can get someone in the same position as US

with some team that has a guy whose a decent player, just not the right fit there, we could offer expirings as incentive, which I think we really need to utilize. again, not being a broken record here but….we need guys under contract in a trade so they can be locked in here for a few years to develope. its hard to attract players to a team WHILE rebuilding, so bring in guys who are under contract, no choice but to grow.

for example

http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=7pt8az7

indy has just signed PF david west and PF jeff pendegraph is expect to be the cheaper backup then hansbrough. in fact hansbrough has a team option both this year and next. hibbert and foster are the centers so we swap out thomas who would start until west is ready, then take over pendegraphs role after. plus indy has wanted top shed jones since they signed him, we need backup guard help. hansbrough then has the chance to EARN that starting pf spot or move on if the team dosent pick up his option.

PG augustin/walker
SG henderson/ jones
SF megette/carroll/ williams (higher up when returns)
PF diaw/ hansbrough/ white
C diop/ biyombo/ ely/ najera (later this year)
