Byron "BJ" Mullens
Like the pickup. LIked him on Ohio State. Added depth at our most lacking spot. Goes with our youth movement. Thoughts?
In 2009, this is what nbadraft.net wrote:
Strengths: Mullens is a talented big man with good athleticism and upside ... Possesses excellent NBA size, with a big wingspan and good length for his position ... Fundamentally sound for his position ... Most of his points come off pick and rolls, put-backs and second shots opportunities, as well as dunks around the basket and alley-oops ... Looks to score almost every time he catches the ball on the low post (very explosive off the floor going for dunks and alley-oops)... Very aggressive big man with nice body control when attacking the basket ... Possesses terrific hands and can catch almost every pass under or around the rim ... His favorite move on the post is to catch the ball in his comfort zone, drop step and dunk or turn to his left shoulder to shoot a right hand hook shot ... Does a good job of protecting his hook shot with his left hand ... Mullens is a good finisher around the basket. Has a very nice jump-shot with good mechanics and form ... Showed the ability to step out and shoot ... Runs the floor well for his size and has decent quickness ... Solid shot blocker due to his long arms and timing (has potential to become even better) ... Takes advantage of his athleticism and long arms to rebound the ball on both ends of the floor, but can become more aggressive ...
Weaknesses: Lacks experience and readiness for the NBA. Has average basketball IQ so far ... Motvation level is a question mark ... His offensive skills are still raw and he needs to develop a go-to move ... Showed that he can be turnover prone .18 A/T ratio (vs. Illinois 4 TO and Wisconsin 5 TO) ... Defensively he doesn’t hold his position well and gets outplayed and outsmarted by opponents (can look lazy getting back on defensive end). Poor passer .3 AST ... Average rebounder considering his size, body and athleticism 4.7 RPG.
*At this point he is one or two years away from developing into a NBA player.

Smart
We were in a youth movement with no young posts beside biyombo who just signed. Low risk/High reward type of player. Love the move. Smartest move this offseason in my mind,
It's cheap
$1.3 this year, $2.2 next year.

Career stats
In 26 games 1.5 PPG, 1.3 RPG
But he only averaged 5.3 MPG in 2 years so he has not got a good shot and he is only 22 and he was the 24th overall pick back in 2009
Over at Welcome to Loud City
They said that he had alot of expectations coming out and for whatever reason he never cracked the rotation but he can do just about everything. They called it a high risk high reward player and said they are interested to see what he can do with PT.

thankfully
it’s low risk for us
proof that not everything OKC does turns to gold
DJ White and Nate Robinson as well.
I like the progressions White has made since being with us though. If Mullens makes that same progress, with him being a legitimate 7 footer, we have a true rotation center for the future or another valuable trade asset.

if he performs adequately
at his age, he’s worth keeping around
You can't teach being 7'1.25" in shoes.
"With the third pick of the 2006 NBA Draft, the Charlotte Bobcats select, Adam Morrison, Gonzaga."
This is a great pickup
Not because he’ll definitely turn out, but we take a flyer on a very young, very big, very cheap player. No downside.
Well he rarely played in OKC, but he will get playing time in Charlotte.
Raw, but he is big. Don’t expect anything great. But it’s good to have a guy with size. I wonder why he left Ohio State so early..oh well.
You
never know. He may be a Marvin Williams case where his family basically depended on him to bring some money home. Or he might just thought he was better than he actually is
wasn't he a high pick?
what other reason is there than that? that’s gaurunteed money
Williams only left
UNC early bc he was raised in a single parent home and had to take care of alot of siblings. I believe Harrison Barnes would be in the same predicament as Williams had he decided to go into the league last year. Its OBVIOUSLY too early for Barnes and wouldnt mind him staying one more year to polish his game.
barnes
honestly looks like he’s regressed some
i’m not sure what his deal is but hopefully they’ll get it figured out
although how UNC is ranked as high as they are despite 2 losses and some ugly wins is beyond me
Yep but
regressed Barnes is still somehow top 10 in this “great” draft. Says alot about the overrated-ness of the draft
Now all of the sudden this isn't a good draft?

he's been saying that for weeks
nevermind that this is projected to be the deepest draft since 2005
deepest
doesnt mean “good”…If you want to be real, 2011’s draft was DEEP in the true sense of the word. This draft is deeper as good players will spill over into the second rd. But the amount of stars or team changing players IMO dont really outnumber last years. Its gonna be alot of good players dont get me wrong, but its the college stars. I dont think theyll be NBA superstars…
You think that Irving will be a star?
Compared to any of the big 3 we’ve been naming from this draft?
by Tim Rudisill on Dec 26, 2011 12:26 PM EST up reply actions
Yes
if we are comparing the #1 pick or 2011 to the top 3 picks of 2012. Irving will be better than them all…
Yeah, I don't see Irving being anything special

I see him being a competent starting PG for awhile.
But never more than someone who might sneak into an All-Star game that one time.

Solid move, and as stated low risk and possible decent return
Hopefully he does a “Kwame” and does something with this oportunity.

We all thought WTF when we signed Kwame who got a shot and looked like ass before he got to Charlotte..I wish we still had Charles to work with him but ill hold out optimism. He can’t be any worse then Diop….can he?

Ugh!
Would rather have kept our 2012 2nd rounder. It will probably be early, and the draft will be loaded with Centers, likely better than Mullens.
the liklihood of a second round pick
panning out to a servicable NBA player is about as likely as the Bobcats getting the #1 pick in the draft next season, even if we have the lowest record
we all know New Orleans is gonna somehow end up with the top pick
certainly, there are a handful of second round picks who have turned out to be quality nba players, but i imagine at the center position they’re even fewer
New Orleans is probably going to have a pretty good season.
I wouldn’t be surprised if they won the 8th seed in a weakened Western conference.
by Panthers FTW on Dec 20, 2011 12:46 PM EST up reply actions
"weakened?"
other than the mavericks and the hornets, what playoff potential teams got worse?
Denver kept Nene and Afflalo and picked up Fernandez and Brewer
OKC didn’t do anything, but got a great draft pick in Reggie Jackson
Portland signed Crawford and gets Wallace for a whole year (and Felton?)
Utah could be a fringe playoff team, and they lost AK but signed Josh Howard
The Lakers lost Odom, but quietly signed Kapono, Troy Murphy and Josh McRoberts
We all know what the Clippers have done.
The Kings might also make the playoffs, but if not, are going to be really fun to watch. No question they’ll be better this season.
The Grizz kept Gasol, got Pargo in the draft.
The Spurs kept their core (for some reason) and drafted Leonard. Perhaps they got worse simply because of age, but they were the #1 seed last season.
You said that NO might get an 8 seed:
Lakers, Clippers, Denver, OKC, Portland, Dallas, San Antonio are all pretty much sure things… does NO have enough to beat out Memphis? Or Utah for that matter?
New Orleans got some nice pieces in Gordon, Aminu and Kaman, but they lost their two best players. Eric Gordon is good, but he’s not Chris Paul. How will Kaman and Okafor work? Will Kaman play at PF? Certainly, they could make the playoffs, but they still have a lot of unanswered questions.
By "weakened" I meant that the best teams got worse and the worst teams got better.
There isn’t any clearcut favorite this season in the West. OKC is probably the favorites, but like you said, they haven’t improved themselves and they were the #4 seed last year.
by Panthers FTW on Dec 20, 2011 1:50 PM EST up reply actions
I would be extremely surprised if they made the playoffs
They’ll be poor defensively, have no depth, and will likely be dumping guys at the deadline.

Although low, there's still a chance that the 2nd round pick could be something, espcially IF it's early...
I get the enthusiasm and fanfare over the Bobcats making this trade, but I think that this initial honeymoon phase will end when they see that Mullens won’t develop into anything significant. You see, you’ve already written off the 2nd round pick as useless. There is actually SOME chance that the pick could have been a good one. However, IMO there is really slim to none chances that Mullens develops into anything good.
I actually agree with you.
I’m not huge on Mullens and I think a high second round pick can be of some use.
by Tim Rudisill on Dec 21, 2011 1:31 AM EST up reply actions
We really just don't place that high of a value on 2nd round picks.
It’s nothing about Mullens personally.

2nd round picks are virtually useless in the NBA
In all honesty, Mullens probably will be better than anyone we would pick up with the 40th pick in 2013. Very low risk.

Pretty much.
People trade away 2nd rounders every year just to get rid of them. They are almost like a formality. Sure, there a few diamonds in the rough every year, but a 2nd round pick can be had for basically nothing if you want it.
I'm gonna live forever, I'm never gonna die. The only thing I fear is I'm never gonna fly.

I wouldn't call a 2nd round pick virtually useless.
If you do your homework and scout well, you can always pick something up useful..even if it takes a little time to develop the player. Ask the Spurs.
by senelcoolidge on Dec 25, 2011 2:18 AM EST up reply actions
I get that
I’m just saying that roughly 2 or 3 out of 30 second round picks actually stick. That is a pretty low success rate and probably lower than the chance Mullens actually becomes a contributor for us.

by Bring Back Primoz on Dec 25, 2011 11:36 PM EST up reply actions
A lot lower.
The draft offers a chance for 60 new prospects to enter the NBA every year. There aren’t 60 players that leave the NBA every year to make room for all of them. I don’t know the numbers, but I think people would be surprised by how many players are drafted and never see an NBA court.

I still the idea of teaming Biz (with some games under his belt) with top draft center or Mullens who can step away from the paint to free up some space
Hollinger just mentioned an interesting detail about this trade
Apparently OKC is paying Mullens’ salary this season too. So we get him for free, minus the 2013 second round pick. MJ must be starting to love this Cho guy.

by Bring Back Primoz on Dec 20, 2011 6:16 PM EST reply actions
Hell yeah
maybe OKC feels like they owe Cho a little for their sucess. Its time for some teams to hire GMs that were part of OKC’s thinktank during the down years. They might be able to pull off a deal. With that being said, we still have a few dollars to fill some spots and hopefully we wont use it on any of the guys that came off of our bench. I think we can do a litttle better than that.
We are approximately $1.6 million under the cap with one empty roster spot
Of course we still have a few exceptions we could use but it might make sense to stay under the cap, which will give us more options if the overseas goes make a return and we want to make a play for them. We’ll have more opportunities if we stay under the cap so I’d expect the 15th roster spot will be a minimum contract guy.

i can't imagine they wouldn't
use the 15th spot on one of our tryout guys
I doubt we'd be able to do it
but grabbing a guy like Wilson Chandler once he comes back from overseas would be a coup. He wouldn’t affect our chances of a good lottery pick this season and would only help us in the future.
The odds of that happening seem unlikely though, since I don’t see the Nuggets letting Chandler get away.
by Panthers FTW on Dec 20, 2011 9:29 PM EST up reply actions
We could amnesty Diop/Carroll/Najera to create the cap space if he agrees to a contract.
by Panthers FTW on Dec 20, 2011 9:40 PM EST up reply actions
Going over the salary cap for a guy like Wilson Chandler would be worth it.
We could regain our cap space the following offseason.
by Panthers FTW on Dec 20, 2011 9:59 PM EST up reply actions
we can't just
“go over the salary cap”, we’d have to use one of the salary cap exceptions to do so, none of which he qualifies for
unless we haven’t used our MLE (have we???)
Correct. We still have the full MLE

BJ rules
Who wouldnt appreciate a better than expected BJ. HEAD and shoulders more efficient than even I expected. Stop and pop sweet 20 footer is money. Its like he mastered Alonzos historic shot for Charlotte. MJ needs to call up OAK, to sharpen his D, but hes young and hungry. Biz and Diop can help with the heavyweight howards of the east. But look what hes doing in 20 minutes, he deserves a start soon. Mullens Maffia representing strongly in suits
