Scouting Henderson's Workouts
I'll be honest: it sucks that this is what we have to resort to in light darkness of the lockout. With no games in sight, and a deal looking further away than it has in weeks, fans have had to rely on mediocre pickup games and workout videos like Gerald Henderson's. Not much of a choice, but I'll take what I can get.
Gerald Henderson showed some encouraging improvement after the firing of Larry Brown, showcasing a silky mid-range jumper and stellar defensive fundamentals. Under Brown, Henderson averaged 3 points (on 41% shooting), 1.8 rebounds, 0.6 assists, and .3 steals in just 13 minutes per game . In the last two months of the season under Silas, those averages jumped to 14.5 points (on 46% shooting), 3.4 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.3 steals in 33 minutes. Even with his newly discovered confidence, there were some glaring holes in his game: his 3-point shooting and his ball-handling ability.
That's why I was encouraged by Dime Magazine's video of Gerald Henderson's workouts this summer. There are plenty of promising signs of improvement, as well as some lingering weaknesses. And dude, check out his hair.
Let's start with the good. Henderson's shooting form has improved as a whole. Last season, Henderson struggled shooting the ball from deep mid-range and behind the 3-point line for two main reasons. One, he has a tendency to fade away unnecessarily the further he is from the basket. It's a common problem among young wing players today, and generally nothing to be too concerned about. It's an easy fix. Two, the further away from the basket he was, the less he'd square his shoulders. He leans his shooting shoulder inwards. Again, an easy fix, also common among young wings. Well guess what! Both of these issues appear to have been corrected this summer. It's all repetition, baby. Also nice to see him widen his base.
Let's move on to something lukewarm. Henderson appears to be working on several go-to moves such as spin jumpers and step-backs. If he's to make a leap into the next stage of his development, go-to moves are something he'll need. The good? He's working on some. The bad? They're rough, slow, and ineffective in game situations. Yes, this is practice. But some things will carry over into games. His footwork is slow and clumsy, and the steps he takes are simply too small for someone as long and athletic as he is. You only get two steps when you pick up your dribble. Exaggerate them. Make them long, galloping strides. Create as much space as you can and cover as much ground as you can. It's not all bad though. These are good moves, though. If he works at them and the trainers notice what's wrong, he'll be fine.
And onto the bad. I'm slowly beginning to believe that Henderson will never improve his ball-handling enough to become a second option on any team. The issues are fundamental: he doesn't get low, he dribbles the ball too high, he sometimes needs to look at the ball when dribbling, and he isn't using his fingers and wrist to push the ball downwards. These are things players are taught at a very young age, and often things that players have a difficult time improving on after high school. Mastery of the fundamentals of basketball is crucial for a player to reach his potential. It's not impossible for him to improve at this point, but it's certainly unlikely.
All in all, I'm pleased with what the video shows. Some players are treating the lockout like an extended vacation, and it's refreshing to see Gerald working hard and trying to get better. He's young and has a bright future ahead of him. At worst, he'll be a fantastic defender and shooter. At best? Well, the sky is ultimately the limit for a player with his natural talent.
Am I the only person who LOVES his hair?

He will definatley improve this year
But I dont know whether or not he will improve and be a franchise SG. I still would like to give him a shot and see what he can do in a whole year. But if the season gets canceled and wherever we are in the draft if Austin Rivers is sitting there lets just say im not going to be upset if we take him. The good thing is even though the Bobcats cannot talk to Hendo they can get ffedback on these workouts on how he is developing and make decisions based on that. I do love the hair though the half afro half fohawk works for him.
Rivers would be our starting POINT guard if we draft him.
He’ll move Walker and Augustin both to the bench, immediately.

Rivers can play SHOOTING guard in the NBA
Sure he would make a good PG but he can make just as good a SG he is undersized but has a long 6’7 wingspan and great athletic ability I would compare his abilities as an athlete to that of O.J. Mayo. So sure he is short for a SG but he can definatley play it in the NBA and he is better suited as a SG then a PG.
He's going to be every bit the distributor this year that Walker ever was at UConn.

Not really you can tell by his game he is not a passer
I know your not a Kemba fan but he is a way better passer then Rivers. Go look at scouting reports they will all say Rivers is better suited at SG in the NBA due to his scoring first mentality.
I'm sure the same would have been said of ANY top high school guard.
Why wouldn’t his teams have been wanting him to do nothing but score with how well he can do it? Ray Felton’s scout profile coming out of high school:
“He’s a big-time scorer who is simply bigger, faster and stronger than his counterparts.”
…yeah, how’d that work out?
In Duke’s system, he’ll be setting up plenty of teammates with his ability to drive and draw defenders.

I still think a line up with Kemba at PG and Rivers SG it is pretty sick
Kemba may turn out to just be a scorer but he has the talent to be a good passer we will just have to see how it plays out.
I like Rivers
and from whats been seen THUS far (not much), I wouldnt be upset if we choose him with our pick (which he wont fall that low unless he ISNT that good) but with Kemba being undersized and all of our PFs being undersized, I’d much rather have a SG that is 6’6-8. I just dont see much success with so many below average sized players. Of course Mags doesnt count bc he’s strong as an ox. I’d just rather have a bigger SG and SF if we plan on running with an undersized PG and PF…
Iv been thinking that
We have a very small rostor when you go and look through it. But in most mock drafts Rivers is falling to 9th or 8th.
Yeah bc by him being undersized and the draft being so deep, his size will play a factor in his stock. I like taller sgs like Wes Johnson and Landry Fields that can score from anywhere on the court and give you about 5rebs.
The only other players that I would be ok with taking at SG in this draft
Are Jeremy Lamb and Brad Beal. And maybe Doron Lamb but Im not sure on their heights.
I still think you'll see him playing with the ball in his hands in the NBA.

We do have a giant PF in Biyombo now.

Call me Traditional
but I like the bigger PFs also. But if they are proven rebounders (their primary job in my book) then I dont mind really. I like players like Reggie Evans…
In the NBA today, the PF is becoming more of the central scoring threat on the team;LaMarcus, Amare, Dirk, Blake, Bosh, and Love just to name a few.
"With the third pick of the 2006 NBA Draft, the Charlotte Bobcats select, Adam Morrison, Gonzaga."
There are also the Boozers and Brands of the world, too.
If you have a guy who can score and has the size to at least bother people on defense, that’s a huge piece, and easier to find in a guy at 6’8"-6’10" (PF size) than you can in a taller dude.

Bravo to Reggie Evans

I know he’s an off the bench option, but he seemed to have a knack for getting rebounds last season

I don't see him ever getting further than first big off the bench.
And that would probably be stretching his ability.

I like the guy.
I see him as a smart option off of the bench. With his injury early on (which wasn’t exactly an injury), he’s not had much playing time in the NBA. He didn’t have it behind the folks in Oklahoma, and the recovery from his surgery cut into playing time as well. I see him as a solid member of the Bobcats and a great piece of the team that will grow with increased time on the court…

I sincerily hope he improves
The “pros” are definately good but the “cons” seem a bit more threatening to an already struggling offense…
I would love for Hendo to be a Bobcat but my logic is this: until we find a player that is a consistent 20+ scorer, we should be looking to fill that void by having as many threats starting as possible. I know we arent trying to become contenders in a year but we are rebuilding. Kemba and Augustin dont really scare me but players like Hendo, Mags and Tyrus scare the shit outta me. That is why I feel that we should start looking for those 15ppg players in all 3 of those positions (Maggette can do it but that was before the Injury, plus he wont be around long)….I would love for the improved Hendo to be a 6th Man candidate for us. Players like Wes Johnson, Mike Beasley, CJ Miles come to mind. JUST UNTIL we find our Rose or Durant
Im still not ruling out he cant be at least an 16 to 18 PPG player
But at this point until we see him there is no telling what he will be.
Dude, did you just not read above, or did you not watch after Brown was fired?
Henderson WAS a 15 PPG player once he became the starter. LAST YEAR!

What does our season
Being “over” have to do with anything. We were actually still in the playoff race and still playing NBA teams, so exactly what are you saying? He was still going up against people like Kobe, D Wade, and the great Nick Young, so what exactly does us beginning our rebuilding have anything to do with his stats? How in any way can you use that as a way to discredit his accomplishments? I’m not seeing how they correlate with eachother at all.

I would never have expected him to climb to second-option level offensively anyway.
But once he gets to a little above average offensively (15+ PPG on a consistent basis), he’ll make his calling card on defense.

+1
I don’t see him becoming a first or second scoring offense on a great team, but there is no reason he can’t be third. He would thrive on a team with a PF like Randolph or a SF like Durant.

If he's worked on his range, and his 3 point shot exists...
I see him as a 20+ per night player, but none of that can be proven until we actually have a season.

kinda sad we’re already thing of the draft but as of now i’d go away from rivers but i think he’d be good and go with a long SF option to compliment Gerald’s offense, Biyombo’s lack of offense.
Props to Gerald so if he can just get his ball-handling down i think his go to moves will be a lot easier.
The best forwards are in the top of the draft
That is why I really hope the season happens so we will get a good draft pick, unless of course we are better then expected. But of course we would love Harrison Barnes but if we could get Pery Jones or Jared Sullinger it would help us so much.
If the season is canceled and the lockout is going on through the draft
Can you trade picks during the draft?
It would be interesting to see
how picks actually work if the lockout stretches…
There's no reason to think they couldn't.

Trading Diaw for lets say uhhh…Wes Johnson and a later pick. Bc they dont have to pay Diaw, they wouldnt mind taking Diaw’s contract for 10days. Now they are free of Wes’ contract basically and didnt have to pay Diaw but for 10days…
No, I meant an ACTUAL trade.
Not something hypothetical. We would likely be able to trade for Johnson as long as he’s under contract for ‘012-’013, but we couldn’t trade Diaw.

Yep
I just cant see him working here. Nor can I see any teams taking much interest unless we throw in Augustin OR a pick. Here’s my list of the few team that MAY take Tyrus. PHX (rebuilding/Pietrus, Morris, Lopez for Augustin), Magic (need help down low/Bass), Spurs (need a shot of energy to keep the window open/McDyess), Washington (youth and a defensive presence/Blatche for a pick)…face it. With Tyrus we wont get much. Blatche is the best option for US. If not, then I’d use the AMNESTY on Tyrus.
Hmmm
Pietrus, Morris, and Lopez for Tyrus and DJ?
Sorry if I accidentally jerked your arm out of socket while shaking hands on that deal.
Just means we’re shopping for a
PG in the thin free agent market. Find Stitt from Clemson, and then find a vet PG

That deal is perfect for us. We get a PF, and backup center and a shooter/defensive wingman. We dont get older, we get a couple expirings, we rid ourselves of Thomas (Morris will at least be decent for us AND WILL PLAY) and any of those guys can be traded for a backup PG. I personally wouldnt mind having Jarrett Jack or Delonte West. (Bigger pgs to offset both Kemba’s shaky shooting and his height)…CHO I HOPE YOU ARE READING THIS…
I could see Lopez starting...especially if we didn't sign Kwame back. I believe that we do though.
By the way…via Twitter, Diop said there is no pain in his achilles, and he has been working out, running and jumping with no ill effects. If he is where he was during Silas and before injury, I would welcome him back as a backup. He is a big body that can grab rebounds and block shots. He even has 6 fouls to spend in every game.
I plan on trying to interview him at Trade Street Post as soon as I get my answers back from Matt Carroll and DJ White.
Anyway
and I’d throw in Diaw to give the Suns an expiring.
Morris and Biz could play together…
It would be a very young and interesting team

I agree
I think if we want Biz to be a center we should let him spend more time there. He and Lopez would work. And let Diop be 3rd string (or Amnesty). Diaw and Morris could play PF with White being 3rd string. Pietrus could back up both wing positions and we have ourselves a decent (non playoff bound) but decent team
...speaking of awful offensive frontcourts.
Would we even TRY to run any plays through the post?

There would have to be some deadline (normally the trade deadline) where it isn’t fair to trade players, especially those with expirings. If the season is canceled, I can’t see them allowing anyone to be traded.

…but I’d also like to see Diaw unloaded somewhere for a pick or “young vet”. Does anyone know just how heavy Diaw currently is? I know when he came into camp last year he looked at least 30 pounds heavier…
Either way, he’ll be effective as he always is…every 5th game.
