Charlotte Bobcats at Minnesota Timberwolves preview -- Game 33
The Big Picture: I'm guessing there's a good amount of Charlotte Panthers fan crossover here at Rufus on Fire*, so please forgive my indulgence of a football reference. I attended two NFL games this season, both 49ers games, one here in Charlotte and one in San Francisco against the Cardinals. In the first game, here in Charlotte, Alex Smith was bad. In the second game, at home in Week 17, he was beyond competent.
Here's the thing: Smith is a poor quarterback and a punch line, but I wouldn't categorize him as a terrible QB anymore. He's basically Jon Kitna at this stage of his career. Those games were perfectly in character for him -- both of them -- yet everyone remembers the truly abysmal QB he was early on, with truly abysmal teammates around him, so he might not get another chance to start, even though he's still only 26 years old.
Such is the power of first impressions and old prejudices, which every professional sports team, including the Bobcats, tries to overcome in seeking out the best players they can.
I've highlighted the Minnesota Timberwolves and their general manager, David Kahn, before because I think that organization is doing something extremely brave -- to the point that a good number of people interpret their actions as reckless. They're okay with losing now if it means they will win later, and they've fully committed to that course of action. Lots of teams have said they're rebuilding, but how many go so far as to dispense with basic roster construction in the search for talent? Furthermore, what have they done that's actually reckless? Was signing 25-year-old Darko Milicic to a 3-year, $14.3 million really a reckless thing to do? Trading Al Jefferson for two first-round draft picks and Kosta Koufos?
As noted in the previous post, they may not have chosen the best players available to them in the past couple drafts, but that's likely an issue of simply guessing incorrectly and not an issue of philosophy guiding them away from a player.
While I do admire the Wolves for going down this road, I don't know if it's a good idea for the Cats to follow. There are only so many shiny new players available, and no matter how much one can reason that Darko or Alex Smith is still young and has many more years of improvement and athletic prime ahead of him, there's still the matter of fear of being wrong, oh so epically wrong, and being mocked for not realizing that the first impression was, indeed, correct. Is it "better" or "worse" to screw up a situation that's already at rock bottom, or one that's on the fringes of playoff contention?
Musical Interlude: Bloc Party -- "I Still Remember"
Key to Victory: Rebounding. Kevin Love is a monster on the glass. If Dominic McGuire is going to prove himself an NBA-caliber power forward, he'll have to prove it against guys bigger, stronger, savvier, and just as quick as he is.
Detail That May Interest .08% of You: Love is shooting 42.5% from three this year. Yes, it's a Love-in.

This should be winnable for the Cats, but with Wallace, Nazr, and Diop out, Mcguire (sigh) and Kwame will have to step up.
"You run plays to get open. If you're open, and you don't shoot, what's the point of running the play?" - Coach Paul Silas of the Charlotte Bobcats
McGuire is a hell of a rebounder - There I said it...
Question will be if Kwame knocked off enough rust, dust, and cobwebs against the Heat to be worthy.
Also…if Diaw shows up and Plays Kevin Love like he should be able to…it will be an interesting night.
My biggest concern…Tyrus plays…I would dress him, but not use him unless I absolutely have to. The same for Jax. We have to get our guys healed up. Playing broken players just means they stay broken longer.

Minnesota hasn't had a winning season since TWO YEARS before Garnett left
If adopting a variation of the Minnesota “Lose Now & Win Later” plan means we’ll be scraping the bottom of the barrel until the ‘16/’17 season, no thanks.
I’m still one of the (very?) few that thinks our salary situation is not quite as terrible as it is made out to be. Nazr’s contract expires this year. Diaw’s expires next year. The books get really clean after next season, and that’s if we don’t make a single roster move until then.
Paul Silas FTW!
Kahn’s been doing this since 2009. He’s cleaning up Kevin McHale’s mess.

Count me in regarding the salary situation.
But our drafting capacity is pretty well crippled. I’d be willing to give up some of our coming cap relief in exchange for another first rounder or two.
P.S. - Is it an interim fling or a permanent bromance?

The only real salary issue we have is paying Diop and Carroll $33 million over the next 3 years
Everything else is fairly reasonable, unless Jack gets washed up before we deal him.
Oh no! We suck again!

Diop's down to 2 isn't he?
And this year is partially covered(insurance), or am I thinking wrong?

I was at the Panters/Niners game
My fiance in my Frank Gore jersey, and myself in my Patrick Willis jersey. Sad day as a Niners fan as the team got off to their worst start since 1979.
Devout follower of the Franimal and the Basa-viour.
Blindly Optimistic follower of The Iowa Hawkeyes, San Francisco 49ers, Carolina Hurricanes, and the Charlotte Bobcats.
Jack's Out Tonight
Looks like we’re starting DJ, Henderson, Brown, Diaw, and Kwame. Come on, young guys – here’s your shot.

My thoughts for tonight
1. Diaw has to be the top or 2nd top scorer tonight (and take at least 12 shots).
2. Kwame is going to have his hands full with Darko as Darko hasn’t been that bad this year. Needs to play one of his better games for us tonight.
3. Get a body on Love EARLY. He doesn’t overpower people with his rebounding, he does it by getting to the right spots first, and then using his timing. Dom might be a good matchup on him when Diaw is playing centre.
4. DJ has to lead the offense. Take his shots, and take more ownership of it. Diaw will have the ball more in his hands tonight without Jax, and possibly we are going to see Liv in tandem with DJ a bit more than usual tonight as it gives us another facilitator on the court.
5. Tyrus if he plays might be a good matchup on Beasley. Both freaky athletic. If Tyrus doesn’t play then Derr Brown could be an interesting matchup.
6. Wesley Johnson v’s Gerald Henderson could be an interesting matchup as well. Gerald will need his defensive groove happening against his taller opponent. I would like to see Gerald attack him on the other end.
Overall it is another test for our youngsters against one of the worst teams in the league. Big opportunity to shown the Coaches and Fans what they have to offer in a bigger role.
We are playing a team tonight that averages a league worst 17.31 Turnovers a game (compared to our 2nd worst 17.19) so this is probably not going to be a pretty game. Having said that we should be able to push the tempo on fast breaks to get alot of points of their turnovers.
I think that this will suit our players like DJ, Hendo, Derr Brown, Tyrus and Dom. If this happens then we will, if we don’t score the easy buckets then we loose.
Bobcats by 6 Points and both teams to top 100 points. I also tip that both teams will have at least 15 Turnovers when it’s all said and done.
