Bobcats top Bulls, 83-82 -- second win over Chicago in a week

In many ways, this might have been the Bobcats' most incredible win of the season, 83-82 over the Chicago Bulls at the United Center. Late in the fourth quarter, D.J. Augustin led Charlotte with 15 points, Boris Diaw was next with 10. and no other Cat had scored in double digits. Charlotte shot 13-20 from the line. The Bobcats shot 0-13 from three while the Bulls shot 6-12 from distance.

And yet, the Cats made up that significant difference by holding the Bulls to a remarkably low 39% shooting percentage from the field, which means the home team was abysmal on two-point attempts. They also didn't hand the ball over to Chicago, turning it over only 9 times the whole game. And then they overcame a questionable officiating decision with 8.2 seconds remaining, when the refs reviewed and overturned an out-of-bounds call to give the Bulls the ball, followed by Tyrus Thomas making a monster block, and then Gerald Henderson playing perfect defense on the ensuing inbounds play to harass Derrick Rose on a deep jumper attempt at the buzzer that fell short.

It's the Cats' second win over the Bulls in a week. Savor this one, folks.

Game thread comment, lowlights, and highlights after the jump.

GAME THREAD COMMENT

Newsinz -- I try not to notice [Jackson] out there. When he gets the ball, I just close my eyes until I can no longer detect a disturbance in the force. By then, he has either passed the ball or turned it over.

BAD

-- The Bobcats' three-point-shooting futility reached ridiculous proportions. I'd like to see their attempts broken down by quarters, because it seemed like they knew the shots just weren't falling, and laid off from distance as the game went on.

-- Derrick Rose beasted his way to 33 points, albeit on 28 attempts. I suppose putting Shaun Livingston out there more often might have been an answer, but Liv played quite a bit. There might not be an answer for Rose when he's that locked in.

-- Best game of the night, regardless of team, was between Wallace, Rose, and RoF-favorite Taj Gibson, Bulls forward who only scored 9 points on 7 attempts, but also grabbed 9 boards and had 6 blocks.

-- Stephen Jackson scored 12 points on 14 attempts and was a virtual non-factor in crunch time, when Crash took over, until the final minute, when he posted-up and hit a fadeaway over Kyle Korver, then sank two free throws to take the lead.

GOOD

-- Gerald Wallace owned the glass, with 16 rebounds, 5 offensive. At a glance, that 's just short of 40% of his team's boards. Scoring 13 points on 14 attempts is par for the course for Wallace this year, and he threw in 4 assists and 1 block for good measure. In crunch time, as noted above, Wallace took over after getting called for a technical when he shoved Ronnie Brewer with his foot as Brewer lay on Wallace's rolled ankle. After a timeout, the next play saw Wallace flying through the air for a putback dunk, and the ball seemed to get in his hands so he could create offense in the next few plays, too.

-- Nazr Mohammed came off the bench to pull down 8 rebounds, 4 offensive, in only 18 minutes.

-- The Bobcats' team defense deserves more recognition. Sure, the Bulls' threes were falling, but they crushed them inside the arc. All around, a satisfying performance on D.

Our defense is MUCH better under Silas

Especially on the perimeter.

Honestly, I’m still kinda bitter about the botched Korver call…can’t imagine how thrilled I’d be if Rose hit that final shot. I’ll just say “great win,” and look forward to giving Philly a receipt on Thursday.

So awesome to see Gerald go into beast mode, it's been a long time

He didn’t even do it when he was an all-star last year because Jackson came along and dominated the ball in the 4th…

But back in the day when Gerald was the main man he would have these inspired 4th quarter performances every couple weeks where he would take it to the hole relentlessly and single-handedly will his mediocre Bobcats teams to victory.

Granted, it was only a brief outburst tonight, but it was sooooo sweet to witness. Quite nostalgic.

The Bobcats deserved this win, even though the refs did everything in their power to make us lose

Never did I think that the Bobcats would be playing this well, but Silas has got the team geared up and hot. If they keep playing like this, and start beating those mediocre, middle-tier teams that they should beat like Indiana and Milwaukee, it’s not impossible for the Bobcats to be the 7th seed in the playoffs, or perhaps even better….

Before this win, I desperately wanted MJ to move one of our 2 SFs, either Jax or Crash, however after this win, I’m not so sure. The team worked so well together and beat such a high level team, that it might be worth keeping all these guys and shooting for a strong playoff run rather than taking a risk with a trade.

I was feeling the same thing before tonight

After the Philly game, I was just ready for Jordan to blow up this team. I think it was just more of an emotional response to losing such a close game. I think the best thing though for us is to just make a playoff run and see how the chips fall. Yes, we need to rebuild, but we need to win in order to draw more fan support.

That was a must win for the bobcats

I am glad the bobcats were able to overcome some poor calls at the end to clinch this. That technical on G force might of been a good thing though for him because he seemed to hit another gear towards the end of the game. Also, I want to give props for Silas for putting Henderson in the game at the end. Also, since I didnt get to catch most of the game, how did the bobcats look on offense tonight? In particular, was Boris more aggressive on the offense end? I know the majority of people on this board do not like Boris; however, I just believe he has the skills to be such a better player if he would just stop being so unselfish.

by passthedamnchipsdavidson on Jan 18, 2011 11:25 PM EST reply actions

Boris is cool with me.

Still nowhere near as aggressive as I want him to be, but he was making some strong moves to the hoop tonight. Just wasn’t converting much.

by Charlotte Bobcat on Jan 18, 2011 11:41 PM EST up reply actions

Not like anybody else converts half the time anyway

If a guy is making strong moves to the basket, I am ok with some misses. I just cant stand when a guy just stands on the outside and takes a contested shot without looking for a better opportunity for himself or another team member (aka Jackson 50% of the time).

We won because of turnovers

We only committed 7 turnovers but forced 14 and converted those into 25 points. That made up the slack for the sorry shooting.

Oh no! We suck again!

by Bring Back Primoz on Jan 18, 2011 11:50 PM EST reply actions

Jerry!

Wallace was awesome. Seems he’s remembered the rebounding machine that he is. Our shooting % is helped when Kwame and Nazr get inside for shots. We always start the game that way and end up air-balling 3s. I’d like to see the bigs get the ball inside and consistently in rhythm. The refs were evil or blind; and I’d rather not insult the handicapped. At the worst, I’ll say Rose v DJ was a tie. Winner took all though. Livingston should get the chance at late game and shot clock heroics. He consistently hits tough shots. Crash should learn Jordan’s double pump or floater instead of his scoop shot(usually blocked). Diaw, stay the same.

by Altheus on Jan 19, 2011 2:18 AM EST up reply actions

that no-call on the traveling by Augustin was epic.

great win for the Cats. Livingston made some big plays off the bench. and i think Wallace should be named the Warrior of the Week on NBA TV for that 4th quarter play. Tough game to watch, especially in the end game. Just hoping that the players will carry the momentum to the next game.

I counted three full steps, and a fourth as he was gathering the ball. Epic, indeed. It’s not like DJ’s Hedo Turkoglu and able to get to the rim from the three point line in two steps, too. Crazy that they missed it.

Im not happy we didn’t make any but im happy we didn’t keep jacking them up until one fell. Liv still showing promise off the bench. Solid win. This team has life in it after all it just needs to be more consistent. We got to beat the 76ers next game.

Henderson is the unsung hero...

While his stats were modest he made things happen when in the game, on both sides of the ball. That doesn’t mean he’s a go-to guy…it’s an intangible that seems to be present whenever he gets significant minutes.

This is why I’m so ready to trade Jax to Dallas. Not that he cannot help us; but he or Crash need to go. I frankly prefer Jax to leave. While he has the greater overall offensive game, Crash is our best option at the 3 with THIS team. When Jax is not dominating the ball, Wallace can operate in his typical style, and blends well with our mix of players (DJ, Hendo, Diaw and Kwame). Each does some unique things that help provide a decent team attack. I’d still like to have a really good SG to either start or come off the bench behind Henderson. Jax can help Dallas far more than us, while the Butler expiring gets the salary pressure off of MJ, allowing us to make (perhaps) another deal this year or down the road.

by Bassnote on Jan 19, 2011 9:40 AM EST reply actions

Hendo would be exposed in starter's minutes.

Having him play in small, but consistent spurts is good for his confidence and team production overall. Besides, if we trade Crash or Jax to Dallas just to free up playing time for him, we’re putting ourselves in position to not only depend on Henderson as our starter, but to then look for a backup.

by Charlotte Bobcat on Jan 19, 2011 11:12 AM EST up reply actions

I don't think it's really about who is starting or who is not,

we just need to even up the playing time a little more between that rotation at SG/SF between Jax, Hendo, and Crash. All three serve an important purpose and all three produce. I don’t think giving Hendo the full reigns right now would turn out too well in the end right now, but he his definitely impressed.

by MMA_PITBULL on Jan 19, 2011 12:17 PM EST up reply actions

He's just too wild.

He would foul out, grow frustrated, start jawing with officials, or whatever. For all the good he brings, Tyrus Thomas still gets out of position is on every play. He’s still not all there mentally. As the article David put up the other day points out, I think Tyrus is better in limited minutes.

by Charlotte Bobcat on Jan 19, 2011 1:59 PM EST up reply actions

i disagree

i don’t think he’d be “exposed”.

I do think he’d get tired. I think knowing that he’s not going to be playing a whole lot of minutes gives him the drive to go out there and play 110%, especially on the defensive end. Imagine him gaurding Ray Allen or Kobe Bryant for 35 minutes a game playing the way he plays? He’d be passed out.

Tyrus is almost already getting starter’s minutes, can’t say he would be “exposed” in the least.

by adamcawa on Jan 19, 2011 12:23 PM EST up reply actions

why would he guard Allen or Byrant to being with? lol but i know what you meant. Tryus would have to adjust and become better conditioned but i think he would handle being a Starter just fine

same applys for Hendo though giving time he would accumulate to starting minutes and is a good enough defender to handle any assignment in the league. Look at Shane Battier he has got his spot in the leauge mainly off of his defense.

by MMA_PITBULL on Jan 19, 2011 12:41 PM EST up reply actions

i like to think

that most nba players are conditioned enough to handle 48 minutes a game if necessary

but playing the way Hendo does while he’s on the floor, i can’t see many players keeping up that energy.

by adamcawa on Jan 19, 2011 12:46 PM EST up reply actions

When I say exposed,

I’m not saying as in Tyrus would just start getting dominated by players or anything. I’m not worried about him physically, he’s proven that he has the ability. Mentally though, I don’t think it’ll be good for him right now. I think it’s best to keep him as the energy guy in the 6th man role so he can evaluate the game a little before he enters. Until Tyrus learns how to tame himself, I just don’t see him remaining as effective in a starter’s position. Like I say, he makes A LOT of plays, but I think letting him develop in his role now is going to increase that because he’s still out of position a lot on defensive sets and he’s still too in love with his jumpshot.

by Charlotte Bobcat on Jan 19, 2011 2:02 PM EST up reply actions

Henderson is a defensive monster. That's why his stats don't reflect him accurately.

There’s no stat for altered shots, disrupting a called play, or causing the guy with the ball to pass to his 3rd option choice.

P.S. - Is it an interim fling or a permanent bromance?

by Ourdaywillcome on Jan 19, 2011 2:48 PM EST up reply actions

No

We don’t need another all defense/no offense guard.
But Oakley and Silas are both focused on teaching GH jr ways to improve his offensive output. Unlike what some have been saying about DJ, I think the better Hendo gets, the more value he has on the market. If we are building for the future with youth, then he may become an important piece of the future – provided he continues to develop. I am liking his improving offensive numbers but we need to see a bit more of them before I’m ready to decide if his keepworthy or tradeworthy.

P.S. - Is it an interim fling or a permanent bromance?

by Ourdaywillcome on Jan 19, 2011 6:09 PM EST up reply actions

I agree as well.

he’s been very inconsistent as to whether he’s going to blow up in a game or fizzle out. I think at this point in time he’s well worth keeping simply because he’s not a defensive liability with the second unit. He’s also known to make leaping blocks that generally send me into a fit of laughter. I like Hendo, but I don’t love him. I would like to see him get his fair shot at real minutes on the regular. I wouldn’t be completely against trading him, but not until after this season is over.

I was getting the Chicago feed on League Pass. I would have loved to hear our guys, though. Did FSC show any replays of the Korver block/out-of-bounds play at the end? The Chicago telecast didn’t show one, and it was infuriating after I just had to sit through the Bulls’ announcers proclaiming that the previous review clearly showed the ball going off DJ.

Yea they showed a bunch

Steve Martin almost YELLED: “THEY REVIEWED THE LAST ONE WHY AREN’T THEY GOING TO REVIEW THIS ONE?” Sounded like he was saying what every Bobcats fan was screaming. Jack’s foot was not on the line. You could see space between his foot and the line even before the zoom in shot. It was an incredibly bad call. Mr. Martin also informed us that the head ref for the game was very new and it was obvious he had no intention of letting the Bobcats get away with this one. No offense, but what would you do if your ankle was being laid on and being twisted? Correct answer is: KICK THEM OFF! The T was almost a blessing in disguise because The Predator went into KILL mode after that. Gerald’s post-game with Stephanie was perfect. He said everything the way it should have been said. Mad props to Gerald Henderson for his D on Rose on the final play. His positioning literally won us the game.

SportSouth

showed it like 7 times. Steve Martin was upset because he didn’t think there was difinitive evidence to change the call, but they did anyway. Personally, I did think it went of DJ and they made the right call to switch it, but I do agree with Steve that it was too close to make a change. Calling it off on DJ would’ve been the right call from the start. But it was definatley too close to change the call.

The other call and lack of replay was absolutely atrocious and I hope MJ calls Stern about it. Although I’m sure it was Stern’s idea anyway. But a big deal should be made. The refs have taken over so many games this year, it’s rediculous.

I was talking about the out of bounds on Korver call.

I seen them show D.J. about 12 times, but they only showed Korver’s replay once and went straight back to the game. My problem with the whole thing is I know if it was the 2nd quarter, they wouldn’t have tried to say that was out on D.J. That would’ve been absolutely terrible had we lost.

(loading gun while wife fetches the rocket launcher)

Do tell, do tell. 8-D

P.S. - Is it an interim fling or a permanent bromance?

My apologies for the F Bomb...

But DANG….
If that would have happened at the Bulls game in Charlotte…that I was at…

You guys might have seen me on the court…
At least on a camera…somewhere.

Just inexcusable!

It at least deserved my favorite

“Hey ref, bend over and use your good eye!”

Oh no! We suck again!

Love it! My favorite was yelled by some 8 or 9 year-old kid last season.

“Hey ref, check your Blackberry! You’re missing a lot of calls!”

That's a little more appropriate than mine

When there are kids around, you don’t want to break out, “Hey ref, get off your knees. You’re blowing the game!”

Oh no! We suck again!

Man I need to just post this all in one

comment. Instead of 50 haha. Wanted to add that Dj’s slashing ability was amazing last night. Especially considering Taj Gibson was blocking everything within his wingspan. He was finishing drives to the basket and getting shots over big men. He even pulled a couple D-Rose moves. They were freaky like my lady pyramid! Cuz he’s FAAAAAAAAASSSSSSSSSSSSSTTTTTTT. lol. Mad props to Dj for really stepping up and taking the reigns last night. I’m so happy with his performances now. It makes me sick LB held him back for so long.
