Bobcats fall to Hornets, 88-81
The Bobcats came home after a tough loss in Boston and matched the New Orleans Hornets shot for shot all night, but let the game slip away in the final minutes to lose, 88-81. Neither team played particularly poor offense, but they both played solid defense and slowed the game to a crawl.
Kwame Brown had, perhaps, his best game with Charlotte, scoring 12 points and pulling down 14 rebounds in only 30 minutes of action. For New Orleans, David West scored 26 points and grabbed 8 rebounds.
Game thread comment, lowlights, and highlights after the jump.
GAME THREAD COMMENT
Supercam -- MJ only owns 1 professional sports franchise. Might as well drive a Honda, too.
BAD
-- Gerald Wallace rarely finds himself in the Bad column because his defense is there 90% of the time, and it usually redeems his poor offensive games. While he did a good enough job defending Trevor Ariza and other wings, he shot only 5-13 for 15 points, and got only 3 rebounds. Part of that might be because Kwame was getting so many boards, but Gerald's value comes from doing big man things from a wing position, and if he's not doing that stuff, turning it over 3 times and getting blocked 4(!) times, he's very normal.
-- Tyrus Thomas played okay, with 8 points on 6 attempts, and 4 rebounds, in 19 minutes. But he had 3 turnovers, too, and with 2 1/2 minutes to go in the game, he recklessly swung his elbow at Emeka Okafor's chin, and got himself ejected.
-- Boris Diaw couldn't handle West on defense, and when Boris had the ball, he was only able to score 9 points on 11 attempts, all those points coming in the second half. Though it helped that he got 9 rebounds, his inability to slow down West hurt a lot.
GOOD
-- As noted above, Kwame Brown had an excellent game. At times, he was the best player on the floor, completely eliminating Emeka Okafor from the Hornets' offense, and then both flummoxing NOLA's team defense and cleaning up others' misses on the offensive end. He finished the game with 12 points on 6 attempts, and 14 rebounds, 5 offensive.
-- Stephen Jackson had a solid all-around game, scoring 15 points on 15 attempts, but also dishing 6 assists and grabbing 8 rebounds.

Tough loss
Just one of those nights where the ball wouldn’t go in the basket. It looked like we were suffering from the back to back because there was a lot of standing around and isolations on offense and little ball movement.
Agreed on Kwame, he was very solid. The one thing I like about Kwame is that he truly understands his role and doesn’t try to do things he cannot do. He’s the exact opposite of Tyrus, who is amazingly gifted but has no idea who he is as a basketball player. And he was awful tonight. Besides the ejection (and I don’t understand why he threw that elbow, it was totally unnecessary), he blew a few layups because he has NO handle. I mean ZERO handle. I mean “I had better handle when I was 5” handle.
It was a shame we shot so poorly tonight because we wasted a rather good defensive effort. Sometimes the shots fall, sometimes they don’t. Need to go get a split on this back to back roadie now.
Oh no! We suck again!

Observations on the loss: Perhaps Silas is starting to feel a bit like Larry regarding these characters.
DJ got out played and out smarted by the Deacon with a bad knee.
Jack is lazy and slow on the Defensive end.
Kwame was good but seems like he could be so much better .
G Warrior doesn’t scare anyone now in the post and has to become a better shooter.
Boris actually impressed me playing against a great power forward in West.
T Time left his head at home tonight.
Hendo was overmatched.
I was disappointed that Matt and D McG didn’t get a look tonight.

Didn't get to see the game
and having read some recaps on other sites it seems like we were in the game right till the end so that’s a positive, especially when you look at our poor shooting and the amounts of turnovers we had. Looking at the box scores on ESPN it said that we score 3 points of their 8 T.O., whilst they scored 21 of our 16 T.O.
Seems like if we had taken care of the ball like we had over the last couple of games then we would have had the W tonight.
Dissapointed about not winning a very winable game, but we should move on quickly and bring on Philly on Monday night for what I am pretty confident will be a win for the Cats.
Very good points chris
Silas is falling into the LB trends(playing Jax & Wallace 40 + even when they’re struggling, tightening the rotation, not adjusting, bad substitutions, etc). They need to speed things up and play for fun again, I can see everyone is tense. Jax or Wallace (preferably Jax) needs to go. Jax is very selfish at times, plays out of control, whines about the shots he misses, blames everyone but himself, turns it over a lot, etc. Wallace still has no consistent shot, he’s still reckless, & plays out of control, makes bad decisions with the ball, etc. Come on guys, lets get it together, these were very winnable games against playoff teams.
"You run plays to get open. If you're open, and you don't shoot, what's the point of running the play?" - Coach Paul Silas of the Charlotte Bobcats
I still think this team has the talent to make a good run this season
but there are some things that Silas must now realise he has to get worked out. I’m gonna start with Tyrus. He’s gonna have to learn a role and be developed at that role because Tyrus (as talented as he is) doesn’t really have the best basketball IQ at times and it seems like he tries to do too much. For instance, when he had the break away play instead of slamming the ball home, he went for a more difficult left handed lay up, why? He’s not even left handed. When he got the offensive rebound late in the 4th, he turned right around and gave the ball away trying a left handed pass, why do that when you can make the simple fundamental two hand chest or bounce pass? Lastly the elbow, I am almost 99% sure it wasn’t intentional, I attribute that to Tyrus being wreckless and goofy. But I will say this, had he and Jackson stopped arguing with the ref’s so much, I don’t think they’d have gone to the extreme and thrown him out of the game.
That leads to my second point that Silas has to get through to these guys, they need to shut up, man up and play ball and cut all this cursing, yelling, and bickering with the refs. This is why Jackson was targeted with the quick techs in Milwaukee, this is why Tyrus was tossed for the accidental elbow last night, these guys come off as having bad attitudes and being hot headed, why build that type of reputation for yourself? Tyrus does all kinds of charity and aid work offseason, but you’d never know it by watching him play ball. That’s why I wrote before, the team captain should be Boris Diaw. He’s the most level headed, most mature, most intelligent player of the bunch, and he’s the only one that displays any sort of leadership on the court.
The loss last night was just as bad as the blowouts to Memphis and Boston, I hope Silas and staff lay it on the guys pretty heavy and get them to cut that unnecessary crap out because they’re only hurting themselves and the team.

Completely intentional
He had tons of space. The swinging of his elbow was not in the flow of his movement. I completely agreed with the call. The elbow was uncalled for.

He had the Ball and Oak was standing there...then the awkward extension to be sure he caught Oak...
Oak flopped a bit…and wasn’t injured. Definitely intentional, but no injury was inflicted…maybe a flagrant 1.5

There it is.
Yes, Okafor took a dive. That takes presence of mind, so I know it wasn’t like he just took a haymaker from Tyson.
But the elbow was deliberate. It wasn’t wildly flung, but controlled and aimed. I don’t think Thomas was even thinking about it. He took a micro-thump on the way down with the ball and all he was thinking about was the no-call and showing Okafor that he wasn’t gonna be bullied. It doesn’t matter. He planted that elbow.
To me the only difference was whether it was an F1 or an F2. Dell felt it was an F2, Steve wasn’t 100% certain, and Stephanie was scarfing her Yoplait – spoon, carton, and all while jealously eyeing a kid with a corn dog.
That’s why the refs reviewed it and I think they made a righteous call. I expect that come Monday the league will lighten Tyrus’ wallet by about 10K or so. I’m just hoping they don’t suspend him. Right now there are no other sparks off the bench that Coach Silas seems to trust enough to give burn to except Liv, and that’s through necessity, not desire to see him take over a game from the bench.
By the end of the game, both Jack and Predator were running on a mix of fumes and adrenaline. This past week isn’t the only 4-game week we’re staring at. At some point Silas is simply going to have to roll the dice and give his scrubs some trust or our starters are going to roll up lame again and take the choice out of his hands.
It isn’t just the law of averages either. Ask any soccer player. They know the science. As your striated muscle (biceps, quads, calves and sartorius (inner thigh) depletes oxygen reserves, heavy breathing will replace it, but only for so long. After about 20 minutes, respiratory supply can’t keep up with demand. First the muscles will start to cramp. Then, like an engine without oil, they will start to seize and contract, taking the tendons with them. That’s where most hamstring, tendon, and other cartilaginous injury comes from. (The rest of the time it’s from improperly stretching and warming up. Pick on Okafor all you want, but he’s adding at least 2 seasons to his body with his stretching regimen.) NBA athletes are the second-best conditioned team players in the world. (Soccer gets the edge and rugby is very close in third) They can handle the occasional 40+ night if they take their training seriously. But there are only so many 80+ minutes in 24 hours performances in the tank. Silas needs to look at the schedule. The human body needs at least 48-72 hours to recover from that kind of abuse. We only have one 2-day break in the next month and we’re coming off of a 4 game/5 night stint WITH travel. The one real break also includes a day for flying out for the West Coast road trip, so there’s no love there either. The casualty list is going to grow between now and the All-Star Break unless Silas gets wiser with his minute distribution. We all know that Wallace and Jack in particular will complain at reduced minutes, but the last time I checked, Silas was in charge with Jordan’s backing. When the man signing the paycheck tells you to sit yer ass down, it’s a good idea to shut up and listen. Otherwise, the coach of the team they get traded to will give them all the rest in the world. But the ominous trade noises coming out of the front offices are an entirely different topic. Hopefully Monday we can race out ahead of the Sixers early and Brown, McGuiree, Najera and the others that have been consigned to Yahtzee hell for the past week will be able to redeem themselves.

No, I disagree
Tyrus had not been fighting inside with Okafor where they were going at it and were extra physical. Tyrus was trying to clear space by doing that elbow swing (which is a move I’ve never liked for that reason). I’ve seen Tyrus going at it with guys who he dislikes (Reggie Evans from the Raptors) and he’s never tried anything like that before. Tyrus is a clumsy player, if he wanted to elbow him in the face why would he go over and help him up? He wasn’t even looking at Okafor when he hit him, and even Okafor himself said it was unintentional in Bonnell’s report. Tyrus is known for being a moody guy, but he’s never been a dirty or overly physical guy, it was a accident.
Here's the video
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YmBj4fr3F6Q
He had plenty of space to the sideline and the baseline so no need whatsoever to clear any. Tyrus may not have shown any dirty play before but if there’s one thing Tyrus is, it’s emotional. He’ll yell and pout with his emotions on his sleeve. And last night, his emotions probably got the better of him for a micro-second and he, as Ourday said, deliberately swung a controlled elbow to Okafor’s mug.

Thomas is indeed awkward.
If he had actually been aiming for Okafor’s snoot he would have caved in his chest instead.
I got the impression at first that it was one of those elbow-swing clearouts that happen in almost every game. But he hesitated and only moves slightly to the right before swinging into Emeka. I do believe that it was intentional, but I think it was very likely the opposite of my first sentence. I think he was looking to plant one into Okafor’s chest or shoulder and missed. Even if he did it on purpose though, I really don’t think it was a deliberate attempt to cause an injury or with any personal anger directed at Emeka. It’s a fair bet that he’s gonna get tagged with a fine tomorrow, but even though the ejection may have been righteous, any additional penalties won’t be. He doesn’t deserve a fine and if the league suspends him for even one game it will be way over the top – like cutting off a kid’s arm because you caught him filching cookies before dinner.

Ourday, if the losses add up on this road trip, what trades are in store?
I know the Wallace talk is out there, but I’ve got to think they’d prefer to deal Jax. Maybe they’d deal both if they get the right pieces in return?
Almost everything I hear is about Jax, Crash, or Diaw.
Jordan was hell-bent on unloading DJ ahead of all others (packaging him with Nazr and/or Diop before the injury) but Silas talked MJ down from that particular ledge and convinced him that DJ is of growing value to the team and worth holding on to.
Again, just about anyone is trade bait at this point, but Jordan is trying to move the big-money, big-interest men that he has. We could get rid of most anyone if we want to badly enough, but Jordan wants to either shave budget coin, or bring in someone young with a lot of upside currently playing for small paper.
I don’t understand it. It’s like he wants to have his cake and eat it too. He needs to generate some money, but he needs to work for the future as well or any immediate cash he attracts will fly out the door if his remaining talent erodes either through age and erosion or trades that amount to little more than fire sales if he pursues what appears to be his current path.

Why do I have an itching suspicion...
I mean I read on HoopsHype that the team says they want to stand pat and make a playoff push…and I also read that there was jax interest in Mavs land…
and I personally have a suspicion that Crash may be on the block…
Bruce…
Could you give MJ a call? I thing we need to have a meeting

Unfortunately, he stopped taking my calls after I convinced him what a good baseball player I thought he was.

Try a Charles Oakley impression
Oakley is new, so he may have forgotten the private line number. Plus Oakley isn’t going to take sh*t. If he has a question, he gets an answer.

After watching the replay a few more times...
I’m pretty sure I have the right of it. Elbows to the chest, shoulder bumps etc. happen every third play in the NBA. If Tyrus screwed up anywhere I think it’s just because he didn’t realize that he wasn’t in a big enough crowd to hide the jab from the officials, and he landed it a bit higher than he intended. I think it was just meant to be “big man” physical play and Thomas had crap aim.

Bad game
Seemed like the players were tired are did not want to run? MJ needs to get rid of one of his stars but needs a change somewhere? The team couldn’t make a run for some reason.
We do seem to play better when either Jack or Wallace are out

A Flagrant 2 is for intentional contact
Tyrus Thomas did not intentionally elbow Okafor in the chin. He was not recklessly swinging his elbows. He came down with a difficult rebound and turned with his body to look up-court. He had his elbow raised when he turned and Okafor unexpectedly was leaning in. I can agree with a Flagrant 1, but a Flagrant 2 is out of the question.

He hit him on purpose...watch the replay
He extends to make contact, then once he does it, he refuses to look towards Okafor…until after he’s whistled..

On further review...
I was giving my option from watching it live. After reviewing the video, I can your point. Tyrus was attempting to clear space/make contact. He did immediately reach down to Okafor. My thought is that Tyrus was going for body contact, maybe an arm to Okafor’s shoulder. This is more of the out of control yet energetic play Tyrus brings to the line-up. Maybe in a split second he thought he could make contact and draw a foul. However his elbow was too high and hit a jaw instead of a shoulder.

Earlier this season I wanted Emeka Okafor back on the Bobcats
Last night, Okafor had his usual 10 point, 10 rebound game.
However, Kwame had 12 points, 14 rebounds, and played better defense in my opinion.
Kwame’s minimum contract is a lot less expensive than Okafor’s monster.
If the Bobcats choose to upgrade at Center, Okafor is not the answer. There really aren’t too many Centers out there that would make the Bobcats significantly better.
I think the Bobcats need a dead-eye shooter to improve. Someone like Ray Allen, Monta Ellis, David West.

We were in this almost until the end,
I feel like after Tyrus stupidly got himself ejected the team just collapsed.
Congrats to Kwame for a great game. I will admit, given the circumstances we’re in, that I’ve been impressed with Kwame thus far this season.
I am so happy for Kwame
He’s found a team and a role. I hope to see him here next season…Diop we are stuck with, but Nazr will need to be replaced with some sort of upgrade…either youth or higher tier vet.
