Bobcats topple Bulls, 96-91
The Bobcats jumped out to a big first-quarter lead against the Chicago Bulls, gave back the lead by the end of the third quarter, and then finally prevailed after a tight fourth quarter, 96-91. It was the Bulls' third straight loss on the road, and the Cats' fourth straight win overall.
The Bulls were led by Luol Deng's 22 points on 8-12 shooting, and Carlos Boozer's 23 points on 10-15 from the field to go with 14 rebounds. Meanwhile, the Cats spread around the scoring, with six different players scoring double digit points, and D.J. Augustin tallying 12 assists.
Game thread comment, lowlights, and highlights after the jump.
GAME THREAD COMMENT
intramural sport bench coach -- Apparently, Thomas wants a three-way with Jack and Pressure. (DA -- FANTASTIC screen name.)
BAD
-- Tyrus Thomas was the only bench player who stood out. The rest of the guys -- Shaun Livingston, Gerald Henderson, Dominic McGuire, and Matt Carroll -- merely filled a few minutes without serious embarrassment and shot a combined 2-11 with 1 rebound and 1 assist.
-- It's sad that Derrick Brown has been so marginalized, given the flashes of potential he's shown. I'm guessing Eduardo Najera is active and Brown is inactive because Najera has some kind of non-playing value that Brown doesn't. Is it seriousness in practice? High five ability? General cheeriness? Given what limited information I have, I'd rather Brown get minutes here and there, and I hope there's another reason other than present-day talent that Brown's inactive, because the eleventh man is not where one should aim to maximize current production.
GOOD
-- First, Gerald Wallace is back and had a Gerald Wallace game: 14 points on 11 attempts, with 7 rebounds and 2 blocks. It's good to have Crash back.
-- I've got a post about Thomas percolating, and I think it'll spark some good discussion when it does go up -- perhaps tomorrow. Tonight, he was great in less-than-full-time minutes (29:34), scoring 17 points on 14 attempts, with 13 rebounds, and 2 blocks.
-- D.J. Augustin thoroughly outplayed Derrick Rose. Augustin shot 6-12 for 22 points -- thanks to 8-9 free throw shooting -- and, as noted above, had 12 assists. Rose ended up shooting 5-17 for 17 points, with 7 assists. While Rose is clearly the better player, for one night, at least, Augustin got the better of him, from the first minute to the last, when he forced Rose into a key turnover.
-- Kwame Brown wasn't in for crunch time -- and rightly so -- but early on, he was excellent, absolutely working both Kurt Thomas and Boozer in the paint, ending up playing 21 minutes, and scoring 10 points on 5 attempts, with 5 rebounds.
-- Doth mine eyes deceive me? The Cats turned it over only 7 times. Build on it!

As Aznhobo suggested during the game thread, maybe it’s because Najera is 4TH ASSISTANT. lol
Excellent win by the Bobcats, and an entertaining game!
Fun game thread too.

I still admire Brown.
He got us going last year. This year however he looked like he was coaching reluctantly. LB was 2009, Silas is 2010

I loved Larry and appreciated where he took us
I was really happy when it became apparent that he was coming back this year. But man, when things are going bad you have to try to change something, and playing Dominic McGuire more and more minutes aint the kind of change that’s gonna get it done. Thanks Larry, but not really missing you.
BTW, I actually really dig McGuire’s toughness and rebounding off the bench. I just don’t want to see 30+ minutes of it

I think a lot of people fail to take some things into consideration regarding Brown.
1. He was motivated last season for personal reasons. He had never coached a team for more than 2 seasons and failed to make the playoffs. When he took the helm in Charlotte many experts publicly noted that Brown was highly unlikely to be able to continue that streak. From that point on it was a matter of personal and professional pride to achieve that goal last season.
2. He was under contract for this season and beyond. He only had 2 ways out. First, he could accept Jordan’s largesse and ask to be let out of his deal. Had he done that though, it would have cast a negative light on his carefully protected resume. In short, it would have made him look like a man who is a quitter and any team (apart from Philly) that hired him could face the same problem with him the moment he got homesick and sick of commuting home for sporadic visits. Hi only other option was to get fired. He’d been through that experience enough times already to know that he’d be able to snare another position soon. He was also certain that his BFF Jordan wouldn’t make him look bad. That’s why Brown got so cheesed when Jordan demanded the resignation and anounced that Brown had voluntarily stepped down. It forced him back into the first scenario. Had he been fired he could have said the things that always worked in the past – the players won’t listen to me, management wouldn’t listen to him, Jordan couldn’t resist being hands-on and kept taking his authority away as coach, etc. In fact, that’s why LB made it a point in front of the national media coverage the one time thus far we were on national television this season to say, “I didn’t say anything. The owner came in to the locker room and he had plenty to say himself.” When Jordan “resigned” Brown, it screwed up all off LB’s carefully laid plans.
3. Brown isn’t stupid. By pitting players against one another and praising Boris and McGuirre as the only players doing the job whenever one of them had a horrible night, he knew the team would fall apart and Jordan would can him. The final scene just didn’t play out according to the script he’d carefully written. Michael decided to do a little improv on Brown’s ass. Notice how it took less than 48 hours for the press to change its tune and start printing that Brown was fired? You NEVER hear anyone in the media say that Brown resigned anymore. There is an active spin campaign to change things around so Brown will still have a shot to get hired by some crap team and turn them around so they can celebrate a first round playoff sweep just like we did.
For those that think I may be engaging in a bit of conspiracy theorizing and speculation, point out even one thing I mentioned that went down differently that what I’ve outlined above.

I'm sure I'm not alone in saying that my general mood in in day-to-day life has improved immensely the last couple of weeks
As for the game, DJ could not have been more awesome. This actually isn’t the first time he has thoroughly outplayed Rose head-to-head. As said above, he obviously isn’t the better player, but it shows that he potentially could be better any given night and it is very satisfying to see. I would say that he is in fact the bee’s knees.
And wow, another 4th quarter hustle-marathon by Tyrus. Once every few games he goes insane and becomes the best player in the 4th, hitting the J and wreaking havoc on the defensive end.

"I would say that he is in fact the bee's knees."
LOL. couldnt have said it any better myself. quote of the night for me.
DJ exploded, Gerald exploded, and Tyrus just spontaneously combusted.
it was a great showing of effort, determination, and just grit.

Ok, the only reason DJ outplayed Rose is because...
Our game plan centered around stopping Rose. Chicago on the other hand didn’t even double DJ until late in the 4th.
I’m super excited about DJ, but let’s be real… Head to head, Rose out plays DJ 9 times out of 10

Head to head?
That’s a pretty tough concept to sell in a team sport.
I won’t debate that DJ had help containing Rose, but you’re all but ignoring the great game that DJ had on his own merit.
Someone pointed out in another thread that DJ owned Derrick Rose once during his rookie year, scoring a career high 29 points (off the bench, no less). Tonight, he had a career high 12 assists, and a single turnover, and I’m certain that was Rose trailing behind DJ on a handful of his slashes to the basket.
There’s no question that Chicago has one hell of a point guard. Then again, so do we.
Paul Silas FTW!

I'm not ignoring it. DJ played great!
I’m just saying if Rose received the same attention DJ did, we wouldn’t be discussing this right now.

Well, if Chicago's coaching staff are on their Ps and Qs
Augustin will be getting plenty of attention next Tuesday, in the house that our owner built.
Paul Silas FTW!
And let's not forget that the Bulls DID double DJ in the 4th.
And DJ still scored – including the final 4 points at the free throw line.
Arguing that DJ only had a great night because he was wasn’t double-teamed the whole game is a straw man argument.
And you’re right Newsinz, the question will be rendered moot next Tuesday because we all know Rose will be out for payback and the Bulls will believe that if they shut DJ’s shooting down they’ll have our number. Silas will probably have Oak working with DJ and teaching him some tricks on how to spot the open man and pass out of a developing double. Once the “helper” is committed, a quick pass will pin him in no-man’s-land and free the player he WAS covering to get that pass in the open. If the Defense adjusts it will result in either a mismatch or an opportunity to rotate the ball to the freshly-created weak side for an open jumper. That’s why it’s essential that Tyrus get plenty of burn WITH Diaw whenever possible. It will put 3 players (Jack, Diaw AND Thomas) on the court that can exploit an open jumper. If we put Crash in position to be the open player then He’ll get 20+ easy points and easily deliver the ball for at least 8-10 assists as well.
P.S. - Is it an interim fling or a permanent bromance?
by Ourdaywillcome on Jan 14, 2011 2:05 AM EST up reply actions
Devil's advocate here
I would argue that you couldn’t afford to pay DJ as much attention as you pay Rose. Because DJ is capable of picking you apart with his passing if you do that, whereas Rose clearly cannot.
I love Rose’s game; if he could just improve his passing I’d consider him quite possibly the MVP. As it stands, you can’t let a team play you like that and only come away with 7 assists (and 4 turnovers). I mean if he gets that together he would be UNSTOPPABLE, because you wouldn’t be able to afford to guard him like we did.

Yep, big kudos to D.J. for a great night!
Though yes, great team game plan as well. Those high traps they ran off nearly every screen were money.
by djwilliams11 on Jan 13, 2011 8:07 AM EST up reply actions
Valid points
However, I will say that the Bulls were doubling DJ on a lot on screens as well, and he did an excellent job of picking his spots to drive and still get his points, and also rack up a ton of assists.
As much as Rose was being doubled, he should have easily had double-digit assists. DJ managed to have 12 (and just one turnover) without all the wide-open teammates.
DJ is in fact a better passer than Rose, and while he may be clearly outclassed by Rose as a scorer, he is capable of getting in a groove and being every bit as efficient as Rose. Rose is larger and more athletic, but DJ is in a different class as a shooter.
Again, I’d put my money on Rose no doubt, but I wouldn’t say 9 times out of 10. When they were both rookies and DJ got a few starts when Felton was down with injury, he outplayed Rose big-time then as well, so it is by no means a fluke

But the way I see it, most nights he’s going to gave it going at least a little or possibly much better than that, and we beat a rock-solid team even with him completely off his game. Cool beans.

Sweet smell on Trade St.
Our best win this year. As mentioned before, the difference to me is the Silas Asst. are out coaching LB’s staff by a large margin. Amazing to see these guys hit the 3 with regularity. LB was dead against that part of the game. Did anyone see how pissed Silas got in the 3rd quarter timeout ? He looked like Coach K with Greg Paulus ! Hendo, Matt and D McG. and Liv. were disappointing tonight. Thomas was motivated to beat the Bulls tonight as was DJ to outplay Rose. MJ for executive of the year ! BEAT BOSTON !

was at the game
i was a little disappointed that with tyrus, wallace, jackson and dj all on the floor at the same time, we still played so poorly in the third
i do not understand why this team shuts it off in the third only to have to struggle to pick up the pace in the fourth
boris diaw shut it down after halftime, and was utterly and completly lazy gaurding boozer… and if he passes up one more open jumper, i swear! for all the preaching silas does about taking open looks, i can’t understand how he doesn’t punish boris for it. a few of those turn into pretty assists from boris, i can live with that, but most just made the offense get out of rhythm and someone else have to force a shot up
mcguire didn’t really do anything, but when he was in the game, from what i could tell, he at least bodied up boozer, in fact if memory serves me correctly, boozer only scored once while mcguire was in the game in the second half
jackson was frustrating me because his shot was so off and he tried to carry the team on his shoulders in the third, several times passing up an open dj for a contested jumper… i’m all for him shooting his way out of a slump, but not when the other team goes on a 15-3 run or whatever it was to tie it up and then take the lead. it looked to me like he was mad because he wasn’t getting into the action and was forcing things
part of me wants to say it’s ok because had he not found his shot, he wouldn’t have been able to bring us back in the fourth, the other part of me knows that had he not taken so many bad shots, we probably wouldn’t have lost the lead going into the fourth and wouldn’t have needed a comeback.
overall though, i’m happy for the win.
dj had his best game of the season in my opinion, and tyrus thomas continued to add to his “clutch” statistics. as much as i hate boris, i’d so much rather tyrus continue to come off the bench to provide us energy.
to end on a bit of a negative, which i hardly ever do, if we don’t sign a center soon, we’re not going to be any teams like the celtics, lakers, spurs, etc… boris/mcguire isn’t going to work and kwame and nazr are bound to get into foul trouble at some point we need a third center not named eduardo najera
I was at the game too...
I took a few pictures…but the game was so good, and so much cool stuff happened, I only posted a couple:

If he played like this all season, I think it wouldd be a crime if he wasn’t an all-star. At this point, he’s easily as deserving of the title as any other Bobcat this season. It’s not like he was playing terrible under LB, but now? Is it a stretch to call him a top 10 point guard, and rising?

It's a shame we can't vote for him
But really the fan voting is pretty irrelevant because it only determines the starters, who are always the usual suspects (LeBron, Dwight Howard, etc.). After that the coaches then do a good job of getting in the deserving players as reserves (see: Wallace, Gerald)
So if DJ keeps lighting it up maybe enough coaches will take notice to give him the nod. Rose and Rondo are givens, but after that it’s pretty wide open. Actually, with Jennings down, I think it comes down to Felton and DJ as the third point guard (some things never change) assuming they dont just pick another SG instead. I don’t see him making it, but it would seem like he’s got a shot at least. Next year, watch out.
Gerald Wallace is the way, the truth, and the light
The coaches do a pretty awful job IMO
Too much emphasis is put on winning (see: Mo Williams). That’s why we have all-nba teams. Kevin Love is an all-star, but he won’t make it.

I agree
That is a major stretch. Wallace had a much better year last season than DJ is having and he barely squeaked in. DJ is becoming a very serviceable PG, but he isn’t close to an All-Star. He’s not in the Rose/Rondo class and Wall is soon to blow by him. (And please don’t give me the “He outplayed Rose last night argument.” I know he did. But there are 81 other games to consider.

really happy with the result.
Tyrus and DJ appeared to have played really well down the stretch.
Great about the turnovers, just need the bench to come along next time to support the starters a little more.
