Chicago Bulls tomorrow; Bobcats now face a test
Tomorrow, the Bobcats will face the Chicago Bulls, a team right there with Boston, Miami, Los Angeles, Orlando, and San Antonio, among the title contenders. While they've been an interesting team for several years, they hadn't been title contenders, primarily because they didn't have a singular superstar leading them, and secondarily because the supporting cast could certainly play, but just wasn't up to the same standard as the front-runners.
Now? Carlos Boozer is on board. Ronnie Brewer is on board. And most important? Joakim Noah was as good as ever before his injury, and Derrick Rose is taking names. See what he did to the poor Pistons last night.
But more than the crazy-athletic play, I see a lineup on the floor that could both out-skill and out-athlete even the Bobcats' impressive array of long leapers: Rose, Brewer, Boozer, Luol Deng, and then Kurt Thomas was out there instead of Noah. The thing is, they also have Taj Gibson, Kyle Korver, and C.J. Watson off the bench, and come playoff time they won't need to use Keith Bogans for anything.
Here's what I'm getting at: Gerald Wallace is a better wing than anyone on the Bulls, I'm pretty sure they'd rather have Shaun Livingston than either Bogans or Watson (or D.J. Augustin, for that matter), and if you squint hard enough you might be able to convince yourself that Tyrus Thomas is a more productive overall player than the notoriously defense-deficient Boozer, but that's where the Cats' advantages end.
The Bulls have enough sheer depth to be a playoff team even if Rose ends up doing what he did the past few years, but if he's truly taken a step forward, then that record is no mirage.
The Cats' schedule's soft spot is over. Now comes a test.

Let's hope our cats study for the test
All I can hope for is that we figured out how to prevent the 3rd quarter freeze out, and we continue playing like we did in the last few games. A test INDEED! I think we’re up to it.

The Grizz weren't a test??
Sorry but IMO, the Grizz are a good team. Beating them in double dig, that says something about this team under Paul Silas!
they aren't a contender though
Big difference in a GOOD team(the Grizz are) and a contender. Contenders are deep. Their bench can roll with our starters. The Bulls and Celts are REAL tests. Can we hang? Can we manage to win both games and go on that magical january run we had last year? The games that I would consider tests are ones against top 4 seeds in either the east or west.

You're right
The Grizzlies have only beaten the Lakers and Thunder recently. While its indisputable that the Bulls have a better record, the Grizzlies are very good, and just because their record isn’t as good, don’t let it deceive you, they play in the Western Conf.
Did you read what I posted at all?
I said the Grizz are a GOOD team. Just not a CONTENDER. Then explained why I thought so. Memphis will not be coming out of the Western Conference playoff bracket. The Bulls very well could.

The Chicago/New Orleans games are more important than Boston
Because if we want to make the playoffs, we HAVE to start defending our home court and have a crazy home record like we did last year. This team will always suck on the road.
I’m very excited to see how we play against Chicago but I’m trying not to overreact one way or another. It’s a test, but it’s still just one game.

Nice to know I can stop wasting my time tuning into the road games
Thanks for the heads up.
Paul Silas FTW!
LOL, didn't mean that
I’ll certainly watch the road games too but check the home/road records of all NBA teams. There is a huge home court advantage for some reason in the NBA, as compared to other sports. We are 4-12 on the road this year, 62-184 all-time, and have never finished better than 13-28, our record last year. I’m a math guy and it easily tells me that if we think this team is winning anywhere near half of their road games, we’re highly delusional. Cats have to be lights out at home from here on out and hope to steal a few games on the road.
Oh no! We suck again!

Not looking forward to Crash getting the Start...
Jax plays better in his natural position (SF). Let Hendo (try to) guard Rose. Start Tyrus instead of Diaw. Everybody else just keep up with DJ. This way you have scorer and defender in each rotation:
DJ / Livingston
Hendo / Carroll
Jax / Crash
Tyrus / Diaw
Brown / Nazr?
Yallz Thoughts?
If Tyrus doesn't start in Diaw's place against the Bulls there better be a damned good reason.
Like his tendonitis flaring up real bad, or Silas banged his head real hard on the way out to the bench, or Boris ran Thomas over with his Segway.

Rose
I think the key matchup will be DJ on Rose. Rose, who’s been looking like a top 5 player this year, is an incredible scorer. DJ’s always had his own problems defensively, and this scoring touch also opens up the middle for Boozer to get his own buckets and rebounds
"I know that you believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant."
This is the game, right here
Rose has absolutely abused DJ in the past, to the point where LB had to pull the trigger and get Felton back in there earlier than planned. However, this is DJ 2.0. Man up, son.

Wrong... WRONG!!!
DJ gave Rose the business their rookie years one night he got heavy minutes of the bench.
Definitely wouldn’t call this getting abused:

I think Charlotte matches up very well with the Bulls
Chicago isn’t as good as I thought they’d be early in the season. They really have two scorers in Rose and Boozer, and the best perimeter shooter is Korver who’s on the bench. We have firepower to match especially is Jackson gets hot and Wallace is back healthy.
Should be a good test and good game..Noah out and Bulls still taking names. I knew Boozer was going to be a solid pick up for them he is a 20 10 guy every night. Reddick was headed to Chicago as well before Magic matched the offer…Hate to say it but i would of ended up pulling for them as my second team if it had happend..old bulls fan well for obvious reasons and with Deng,Boozer and Reddick all three in starting line up thats too much Duke Blue for me not to route for

Yeah, I'm the same way.
I’m just in a “be careful what you wish for” mode right now with Jax. We’ll need to trade him for someone who can shoot the lights out and is younger and on a better contract. Since there are only probably about 4 players in the league like that, that’s basically me saying no to any trades. However, if this team falls apart and doesn’t look like it can snag a playoff spot at the deadline, we should go back into the rebuilding mode. Right now though, I just don’t see the point in trading Jax when he’s carried the team basically every night since Silas has been in charge.

If we stay in the playoff hunt, trading Jack would likely derail this team. If we fall out of contention, I could definitely see unloading him to get younger and free up some cap space.

Absoposalutely.
That’s why I’m pushing to trade him right now. I do love Jack’s production, but I feel his overall attitude is only going to deteriorate from here on out the way it has in virtually every town he’s played in for an extended period. Right now his numbers are some of the best he’s ever had and are strong enough that owners will overlook his history and all the technicals he’s drawn this season. But all it will take is Stephen’s temper getting the better of him one time and we’ll be stuck looking for a team that’s willing to “do us a favor” instead of taking our pick from the highest bidders.
I’ll even give him credit for keeping his cool this summer when someone broke into his house and terrorized his wife. Had it been me, I’d have just driven her around and grabbed random people off the street. “Is this him?” If she even so much as said, “it could be one of them” I’d need to bring Johnny Cochran in to town to help me beat the murder rap.
P.S. - Is it an interim fling or a permanent bromance?
by Ourdaywillcome on Jan 12, 2011 5:41 PM EST up reply actions
i hate him
more than anyone on this site, i was the only one who wasn’t excited when he was traded to us and i’ve been (overly?) critical of him since
and all the things i said would happen are coming true this season
you mean aside from the miserable record?
the increased turnovers, a higher rate of techs (hard to believe, i know), lowered efficiency and overall general negativity
yet to come is the in practice implosion (we already had a minor one) and the post game press conference chastising a coach’s decision (i won’t blame him for any of those involving brown)
Well, I attribute the miserable record to Larry Brown.
Jax isn’t the only player that’s had an increase in turnovers, he’s had a higher rate of techs, but when was the last time he was called for one, he’s been efficient to be our leading scorer in every game we’ve played under Silas, going 5-2, and what is this overall general negativity? Why are yall so hung up on him blaming Boris for that pass? It’s not like he went up to Boris’ face talking smack. He was just walking away blaming Boris for something that was his fault. It happens all the time in the NBA. Other than that, what are we talking about? It seems that a lot of that negativity is gone now. Did you watch the D.J. Augustin impersonation tape? They were all out there laughing and having fun together. You guys are really just so stuck on trading Jax that you’re seeing a lot of negativity that isn’t there.
by Charlotte Bobcat on Jan 12, 2011 4:39 PM EST up reply actions
Just for clarification:
We had this discussion in the last game thread. My rationalle for trading Jackson may not be something you agree with, but it certainly isn’t based on a “lot of negativity that isn’t there.”
If we trade him now we have a good chance to get real value for him in terms of a younger player with similar potential or restoring some of our traded draft picks, or even both. If we wait while his well-documented and oft-repeated temper problems become even larger, we may not even find any takers. Read my comments above in this same thread.
I do acknowledge the positives regarding Jackson, as do the teams in the league that are courting us and offering deals for him.
The Diaw incident is not something that should be simply brushed off with a “it happens all the time in the NBA.”
He kept complaining about it long enough that Wallace had to tell him to knock it off not just once, but twice. It’s an escalation of behavior patterns that have been his calling card at every team he’s played for. By itself, it’s just an isolated incident, but there are too many other things that fit his pattern to ignore.
1. The technicals. Yes, it’s improved under Silas, but they are evidence that he was already in “blowup mode” at the time Brown was fired.
2. When training camp started, all he talked about was how much he’d already worked with DJ and how he and the other starters would do “whatever it takes” to help DJ grow into his new role. Since then he as teamed up with Wallace and publicly trashed DJ, Diaw, and several other teammates in the locker room, in the media, and to the coaches.
3 The utterly assinine 3-pointer he took after wasting over 4 of the remaining 6.8 seconds of the game strolling casually to the arc while his teammates (most notable Henderson) waved at him and yelled at him to hurry up and make a move. It cost us the win because he wanted a flashy finish instead of just winning with the 2 point basket we needed. Even Dell Curry said it. “He was looking for the walk-off home run,” were Dell’s exact (and frustrated) words.
That’s just for openers. The arrival of Silas and Oakley may have bought us a reprieve, but Jack is still trashing LB and his teammates in the media after the fact. Right now his positives still outweigh the negatives. But I believe based on what I’ve already mentioned along with other things that it’s only a matter of time before the trouble starts again. I’m not saying trade him just to get rid of him. What I am saying is that the coaching staff needs to keep a close eye on him and management needs to keep listening to the offers coming in. If a good deal comes along (especially as the deadline approaches) we’d be foolish not to grab it. I just want to be sure that you (and others) aren’t lumping me in with those that are irrationally calling for Stephen’s head. As I said, you might not agree with my opinion, and that’s fine. I would actually love to be mistaken on this one. But those that fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it and Jackson’s history is well known. We will need to rebuild and soon. Jackson is too old and slow to be a factor in those plans. If now is when we can get the best value for him, then now is when we should trade him.
We may have reached different conclusions after weighing all the same factors and that’s fine. That’s something that DOES happen all the time both in the NBA and among the league’s devoted fans.
P.S. - Is it an interim fling or a permanent bromance?
by Ourdaywillcome on Jan 12, 2011 6:39 PM EST up reply actions
Balancing act
It’s the “should we try to be competitive” or “should we rebuild” balancing act. Sooner or later, MJ will get an offer he can’t refuse for Jack and pull the trigger. It’s all about when we can get the correct value for him, like you mentioned.
However, what happens if the Cats hang in the playoff race through this tough stretch of games and Jack continues to play well? That might be a tough call for MJ to make. Deal or no deal?
Oh no! We suck again!

Again, if the right deal comes along, he'll be Packin' Jackson

you fail to mention
the only legit scorer we have, does turn the ball over some because other defenses focus more on him considering he is our only offensive weapon, he hasn’t had a tech since Silas came around so stop bitching. He burnt D wade numerous times during the heat game and schooled Rudy Gay in the Memphis game. I just wonder sometimes if you people even watch the game

if you think
that jax gets turnovers because defenses cue on him, you haven’t watched a bobcats game, 80% of his turnovers are unforced errors
and the negativity i was talking about was his unecessary brown send off interview… saying we needed a change is one thing, but he was very critical… a true professional would say its water under the bridge and turn it around into a compliment for his current coach

22, 6 boards, 4 assits, 2 steals

by JDuaneHipps on Jan 12, 2011 11:26 AM EST up reply actions
and do you know how high his assists would be if he had any scorers around him?!?
how many times a game do teams double Jack on the post because of the size advantage at the 2 spot, and jack kick the ball to someone for an open jumper or layup and them miss an easy shot? At least 3-5 times a game, sometimes more.
by Casey Raynor on Jan 12, 2011 4:43 PM EST up reply actions
and how many times
does he make a bad pass that gets picked off, sent out of bounds or has too much mustard on it for any human to possibly catch?
Yes he does turn the ball over, but he leads the team in assists many games.
He’s the only player in franchise history with a triple double and the only guy that can drop 20 or more every single night. Definitely the only guy that can score in the 35-40 range some nights.
And he completely shut down Rudy Gay in the Memphis game.
Hes our best scorer, he defends, and he plays hurt and you people constantly hate on him. Charlotte fans are too busy hating instead of appreciating and thats why we cant ever keep a star player.
For whatever it's worth:
I personally am one of the loudest voices calling for a Jackson trade – and I haven’t hated on him.
I’ve just looked at the situation that is unfolding. There is a cycle that Jack has followed with the teams he’s played for. First, there’s a honeymoon period when he arrives in town and everyone becomes convinced that Stephen Jackson has finally turned himself and his temper/attitude problems around. This is followed by a period of moodiness. Next, he starts trashing his coach and some of his teammates and his temper becomes VERY visible during games. All of these things have already transpired right on schedule since he arrived in Charlotte.
After all this, the next step is outright rebellion against team management followed by VERY public complaints and then demands to be traded. If he doesn’t get what he wants, real troublemaking behavior begins. Sometimes it involves starting arguments in the locker room (between others, he’s strictly a behind the scenes instigator) and sometimes it involves taking swings at fans.
If we move him now, while the main focus is on his skills, we’ll get a hell of a lot more for him than we will by waiting a couple of months for the other metaphorical shoe to drop.
P.S. - Is it an interim fling or a permanent bromance?
by Ourdaywillcome on Jan 12, 2011 2:14 AM EST up reply actions
I think a lot of that was attributed to Brown though.
Jax really hasn’t done anything wrong since he bitched at Boris for that bad pass he threw himself. Winning cures all, and I think the coaching change brought another “fresh start” to Jackson’s 5 steps of moodiness.

Was scratching my head about the “WHY TYRUS” comment, then I realized that you’re a Bulls fan (spelling Augustin with an “e” gave you away).
If you’re still around, let me ask you: how did Bulls fans react to the Thomas trade overall? Was Law, Murray, and a 1st rounder enough for Thomas, especially considering he may not have stayed in Chicago when his contract ran out?
Paul Silas FTW!
Oh yeah, I'm a Bulls fan.
And I do that with names that aren’t exactly how they normally are! Seriously, Dwayne Wade rumors came up, it was … a bad time for like a month. Augustin. OK.
Anyways, I’ve been stalking here ever since the trade [so … long time, lol]. Reaction to it was … mixed and vitriolic. Half of the people on the site think Tyrus is superawesome and trading him was ridiculous, and the other half think Tyrus’s ceiling is as a super-sub of sorts that makes stupid turnovers every 2 seconds and sucks.
I am on the first part of that scale, obviously, but the first round draft pick was enough for him, I think. Only because in the end the Bulls didn’t want him there [same thing as with Gordon, only they traded Tyrus before it happened].
