Bobcats sign Kwame Brown

(DA -- From the FanPosts. More on this later. To sum up my point of view: Not terrible, given the money. I only wish we could've been more creative. Also, maybe this is Jordan throwing Kwame a bone and saying he's sorry?)

The Bobcats have signed Kwame Brown to a 1 year deal at the league minimum.  His agent says he wants to "create a new chapter."

This is pure LOL.  I don't even know what to say.  I'm expecting some serious photoshopping going on.

Agreed, definitely not terrible

it’s the minimum, what’s the worst that could happen. But still, this is funny. I can’t wait to cheer for Kwame. It’s going to be awesome.

My prediction: Crash for Curry

Eddy Curry, that is. That way we have all the bad centers from that draft on our team: Kwame, Curry, Diop

I love it

League minimum for a 6-11 27 year old F/C with PER 36 minute averages of 11pts and 8.8 rebs.

by dudemanhey on Aug 23, 2010 3:13 PM EDT reply actions

I hate it

It is looking less and less likely that the Cats will make a significant trade this season for any big name players.

by dudemanhey on Aug 23, 2010 3:14 PM EDT reply actions

i think we will stil make a trade for a PG

but i like this but will Kwame start if we dont re sign Erik Dampier?

by TS BOBCAT on Aug 23, 2010 3:42 PM EDT up reply actions

LOL?

LOL? LOL. No, wait, LOL? Naww, LOL. wait, what?

Dude this is hilarious.

by Roger, Roger on Aug 23, 2010 3:23 PM EDT reply actions

Desperate is as desperate does...

He is instantly the best defensive center on our roster. He is still young, and i wouldn’t be suprised if he is starting on opening night. At the league minimum, i think i actually like this quite a bit. I have to admit, it is pretty funny though! Maybe this means that either Diop, Mohammed, or Dampier are soon to be on the move…

by kittylover on Aug 23, 2010 3:42 PM EDT reply actions

This means we probably don't expect to resign Damps to a lesser deal.

I think Mohammed could still be moved as well. Diop is a pipe dream.

Kind of off topic here, but I hope Calderon’s performance and injury in the US/Esp game has made us back off trying to trade for him. He’s still over priced.

by and1droid on Aug 23, 2010 3:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Kwame and Diop have similar skill sets

I agree we won’t sign Damps, but what do we do with Diop now?

by Ft.Mill Bobcat on Aug 23, 2010 7:33 PM EDT up reply actions

lol

he’ll have plenty a time to improve his Scrabble skills. Or mahjong. Or whatever else it is he plays. Magic the Gathering?

by Roger, Roger on Aug 23, 2010 9:33 PM EDT up reply actions

It is what it is

Not thrilled by it, but not appauled by it either. A sign that we’re expecting to go w/ the roster we have. He’s a reasonably priced big.

Or… Wait for it

This is a sure sign that we’re making big moves. Why else would we make such a deal? We’re sending Nazr and Damps out for an allstar and needed another center to fill out the rotation.

by and1droid on Aug 23, 2010 3:44 PM EDT reply actions

Just means we're cutting Dampier

And also looking for some insurance inside if we can deal Diaw. Extremely high comedic value too!

by Bring Back Primoz on Aug 23, 2010 3:56 PM EDT reply actions

Possible

but w/ all these signings it’s getting less and less likely.

by and1droid on Aug 24, 2010 8:46 AM EDT up reply actions

If you're Michael Jordan and you're trying to prove you're legitimacy as an executive there is one player... ONE PLAYER who you can't sign under any circumstances

WELCOME TO THE QUEEN CITY KWAME!

My gut tells me this could be the precursor to a Boris Diaw trade, but at this point… who knows.

Something will happen after Sept 11th...

Apparently that’s when the 60 day restricuted trade rule on Dampier and co. is up…this is still another setup for a trade down the line I think. It’s gotta be…this roster makes no sense if there’s no trade on the horizon. But I have to say I don’t hate it….for the money it’s not bad.

by jgbball on Aug 23, 2010 4:11 PM EDT reply actions

Bonnell...

What’s the deal with Bonnell not reporting this…is he on vacation?? He’s been MIA for weeks now.

by jgbball on Aug 23, 2010 4:21 PM EDT up reply actions

Got it backwards

We can trade Dampier by himself any time, just can’t couple him with other players. In 60 days his contract is guaranteed and we can’t cut him anymore. Has to happen before 9/11

by drapht00 on Aug 23, 2010 4:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Sorry,,,,kind of off topic...

but what do you think about Denver wanting to trade JR Smith? I’d love to have him behind Jax…
And I agree that the Kwame signing…although hillarious…isn’t thaaaaaat bad considering it’s the minimum.

by paison on Aug 23, 2010 4:13 PM EDT reply actions

honestly,

JR is too sporadic for my tastes. When he’s good he can be good, even on fire if you will, but man, when he’s bad he’s…ugh, lol.

I’ve never liked this dude’s attitude either, but LB does have a way with these characters. If I ran a team I wouldn’t take him though.

by Roger, Roger on Aug 23, 2010 6:14 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Wow --

with this one move, Kwame becomes the highest draft pick the Bobcats have ever had. Scary.

Just got home from work, logged on...

and thought someone was playing a joke…but it’s legit…
Wow
Well, Welcome Kwame
So we have Derrick Brown, Kwame Brown…what other Browns can we sign to the team?
Shannon Brown – Small Forward/Shooting Guard
Bobby Brown – Point Guard
Devin Brown – Shooting Guard
Kwame Brown – Center
Derrick Brown – Power Forward/Small Forward

There’s the starting 5 of all Browns

by andrewlail76 on Aug 23, 2010 4:48 PM EDT reply actions

Seriously...

Diaw in a trade…possible and could include other players…and depending on how well Diaw does in international play…will probably determine how able we are to move him.

Dampier in a Trade

So we need a PG…what teams are looking for a Vet Center? Vet PF? Decent backup PG (DJ)

PG list …Go

by andrewlail76 on Aug 23, 2010 4:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Actually...

If you look at the vet min signing of McGrady to Detroit…
Rip Hamilton
Ben Gordon
Austin Daye
Charlie Villanueva
and now T-Mac

Anyone else think they may be loaded with Wings…and perhaps want to unload one…perhaps one that MJ knows…
Rip at PG anyone?
Dampier for Rip or Diaw and DJ for Rip?

by andrewlail76 on Aug 23, 2010 5:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Not a big Hamilton fan, but after this signing nothing would suprise me. Not sure about his ability to play PG though…I would love J.R. Smith for 1 season as Jax backup. Maybe Diaw for Smith and a throw-in? I know we have some other needs, but he could be a nice addition off the bench for sure.

by kittylover on Aug 23, 2010 5:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Thank You!!

I agree that JR Smith would be a nice addition. This team can play defense for LB but we struggle scoring and JR can easily be a spark. I’d take him…especially if we can move Diaw’s bloated contract for him.

by paison on Aug 23, 2010 6:54 PM EDT up reply actions

Bye Bye...

Sorry…and call me crazy, but I’d trade him if I HAD to. JR is a much better scorer (although Hendo hasn’t had a chane to prove his worth yet) and JR is still young. He’s only 24.
Don’t get me wrong…I think Hendo needs time and a chance and may turn into something, but I just don’t see it happening. I called Miss Cleo and she told me….

by paison on Aug 23, 2010 7:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Hope we are not gonna rely on Carroll...

We need bench scoring and outside shooting. That should be a priority. I’m not saying that we are set at PG, but why not adress another need until something can be done to solidify the PG position?

by kittylover on Aug 23, 2010 7:17 PM EDT up reply actions

i would like JR

i just was worried about using all our trade chips but hey if we arent gona make trade we still got Liv or Iverson in free agency but hopefully we get a starter and JR

by TS BOBCAT on Aug 23, 2010 7:30 PM EDT up reply actions

We would still have some pieces...

If they would take Diaw, we would still have Dampier’s contract, Mohammad, Henderson, and D.J. to use in any kind of PG deal.

by kittylover on Aug 23, 2010 7:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Also...

Denver may be one team that would want Diaw. With Nene and Kenyon gimpy at best, they sure could use a versatile frontcourt player like Diaw. Just a thought…

by kittylover on Aug 23, 2010 7:20 PM EDT up reply actions

I guess SHannon Brown would be too small for SF...

I suppose we go with a 3-2
with a PG, 2 wings, and a SMall PF and a Center

Side Note

Nene injured his knee and will miss Worlds…

This makes 6 guys from the first round of the 2001 NBA draft to play for the Bobcats

Kwame, Tyson, J Rich, Diop, Radmanovich, Crash.

And Kirk Haston played for the Hornets, so 7 in the first round to play in Charlotte.

Mr. Brown by Bob Marley

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&safe=off&q=Bob+Marley+Mr+Brown&aq=f&aqi=g10&aql=&oq=&gs_rfai=

(Ooh – ooh – ooh – ooh)
(It’s Mr Brown) Mr Brown is a clown who rides to town in a coffin.
(Well, here he comes) In the top is … three rows on top and two inside there.
Oh, what a confusion! Ooh, yeah, yeah!
What a botheration! Ooh, now, now!

Who is Mr Brown? I wanna know now!
He is nowhere to be found.
From Mandeville to slide-a-ville, coffin runnin’ around,
Upsetting, upsetting, upsetting the town,
Asking for Mr Brown.
From Mandeville to slide-a-ville, coffin runnin’ around,
upsetting, upsetting, upsetting the town,
Asking for Mr Brown.
I wanna know who (is Mr Brown)?
Is Mr Brown controlled by remote?

by Ft.Mill Bobcat on Aug 23, 2010 7:39 PM EDT reply actions

I thoght this post was a cruel joke

But after calming down from initial shock and confusion, I’m not really for it or against it. Kwame is certainly not #1 draft pick material (which is where all his stigma comes from), but for the minimum…why not?

If nothing else, I’m kind of excited that the wheels are still churning at the Bobcats FO.

by Newsinz on Aug 23, 2010 7:58 PM EDT reply actions

Exactly my thoughts

So now I am wondering…
Diop
Diaw
DJ
Dampier…
Wat PG are we eyeing…and perhaps it is Billups for Dampier…so they have some cap relief in Denver to build their Big 3

by andrewlail76 on Aug 23, 2010 8:37 PM EDT up reply actions

i would love that

but who starts at C for us unless we are still planning on someone else

by TS BOBCAT on Aug 23, 2010 8:38 PM EDT up reply actions

that sounds alright

and everyone that comes to Charlotte gets better thanks tho LB so hopefully he will grow into at least a decent C

by TS BOBCAT on Aug 23, 2010 8:41 PM EDT reply actions

That's the plan...I would imagine

I mean currently, between Diop and Kwame…Kwame I have more faith in.
Now I am interested to hear what LB will have to say. I think this was a pre-understood thing though. Jordan knows the kid, and I’m sure has talked with him and talked with LB about whether Kwame will listen and learn, and told Kwame that he listens and learns, or he proves all the critics right. I got a feeling we may be pleasantly surprised. He could have gone anywhere for vet min, and had it easy, but under LB…life will be hell and he will learn how to play the right way, or else…

by andrewlail76 on Aug 23, 2010 8:45 PM EDT up reply actions

By the way...

I would prefer his jersey to say Kwame
instead of K Brown, or Brown…
You know, like Yao, Ji, and Nene

by andrewlail76 on Aug 23, 2010 8:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Seriously

I could see the following:
Dampier for Billups straight up…cuts $13.15 mil from their salary for the next 2 years…

Next
Beat with me…
JR and K Mart for Nazr, Diop, DJ, and Diaw…
We gain $23.3mil in expiring contracts at the end of next season, and overall they gain technically, near $30mil in expiring contracts…only being stuck with Diop…

I really did some thinking on this one.

I tried to do the trade machine, but it won’t give me the link for you to see.

Both work.

It also didn’t leave us with gaping holes…
Possibility of getting K Mart to re-sign with us…JR too…if Hendo doesn’t work out…

I could see the Damp for Billups deal happening

But I don’t see the Nuggets dealing 2 expiring contracts for Diop and Diaw.

Diaw, DJ, and Nazr are all expiring...

That is my concern...

Sean May wanted another chance, and he got it with the Kings…where he didn’t do ANYTHING…

I love the posibility of Billups I think he is the perfect fit and he is one of my personal favorite players. JR im not to high on I would like to see what Hendo can do with backup mins. Plus Jax plays major mins i dont see room for JR. I also see K Mart as an older version of Tyrus I actually think Boris is more of a complementary backup to Tyrus that K Mart. that said i cant wait to see Diaw leave.

3 Stages of Kwame Brown

Stage 1: Laughter/Embarrassment. Let’s be honest. Heavy laughter was the initial response for all of us, quickly followed by, “Holy crap. The local radio guys and national media will have a field day with this. Just one more opportunity for everyone to take another shot at MJ and the Bobcats.”

Stage 2: Roster implications. My next thought was “We’re cutting Damp and could be trading Diaw.” The longer this goes on, the less likely we are to trade Damp. MJ did say in the spring he might be forced to make a move or two to stay under the luxury tax so the Damp deal might turn into that move.

Stage 3: Acceptance. The more I think about this, the better I feel. For the minimum, what risk are the Cats taking? Would I rather have Chandler/Ajinca for $14 million or Kwame/Najera/Carroll for 8 million? I’ll take the latter, although I still hate the Carroll contract. A Kwame/Nazr rotation is at least serviceable and we could still do something with Damp, although I believe we’ll waive him. This definitely shifts the burden over to the PG position. I’m not as concerned about the other 4 positions now, as this move at least adds depth to C.

Career 57%. Last Year 33%.

Jordan's Redemption

The name that has haunted MJ for almost a decade. Kwame Brown. MJ’s motivation for Kwame’s success runs deep. If Kwame can contribute at the league minimum, Jordan will be vindicated…kinda. Well, not in DC at least.
I see this a clear sign that Damp gets waived, Nazr will be gone by deadline and Diop will be the biggest bench warmer in the league-once again.
The Bobcats still need to sign Damp on the rebound. Kwame, Liv, Collins, McGuire are all solid signings for the $. All solid bench players. Insurance. Trade a comin’?

i feel as though i can say

that i have seen this team self-destruct over the last 3 months.

1) propbably should have held onto Chandler and his expiring contract
2) Kwame Brown? seriously? we couldnt get a D-Leaguer with talent?
3) i miss the old days where we waited for CP3 to be traded… nostalgia
4) our centers = Ricky Martin; a joke
5) i’m not going to be overly pessimistic here, but there’s no way i take this roster seriously in December. none whatsoever.

lets hope that LB has some serious tricks up his sleeve, because otherwise, we are doomed for a serious fight for 8th in the East.

by StudMuffin15 on Aug 23, 2010 10:23 PM EDT reply actions

I strongly disagree with your assessment.

I’ve stated my reasons for being optimistic numerous times and repeating them again would be redundantly redundant.

When December arrives and the Bobcats are firmly entrenched in the 5 seed we’ll celebrate together.

With the Kwame signing the Charlotte Bobcats are now the official NBA Player Reformation and Second Chance Clinic.

At this rate I wouldn’t be a bit surprised to read that Pete Rose is taking a job in the Cats’ front office.

My sources can beat up your sources

by Ourdaywillcome on Aug 23, 2010 10:53 PM EDT up reply actions

i would say that the Cats are a 5th seed

if this were last year’s east.
i just think there’s too much talent in the east this year for them to make a serious jump up

teams you worry about:
Miami
Orlando
Chicago

teams that are “solid”:
Atlanta
Milwaukee
Boston

teams that will (possibly) surprise you:
New York
New Jersey
Washington

out of those three groups, i’d put the Cats in the “solid” group; but looking at where we were pre-Dampier, i think we were a lot better off keeping Chandler and using him as a trading chip. obviously the CP3 wind didnt blow our way, but i’d feel better with not having Carroll or Najarah, and having Chandler come off the books at the end of the year.
also, i dont want to think we’re “doomed”, but i cant imagine us defending a Carlos Boozer or Zach Randolph pretty well consistently. the center position has always been a problem for the Cats. we’ve always had guys that were either big and limited (Oakafor, Nazr, Theo), or athletic and raw (Chandler, Ajincia, Hollins).

i think it will take a good way into the season to convince me that this squad can compete in the new east. not that i dont want them to, but because i think it’s such a wide-open conference this year.

Like it or not...

I got a feeling we maysign A.I. at Vet Min…what is there to lose…about the same as signing Kwame…
Low cost…possible high reward…
