Who's your spirit baller?

Hump Day conversation starter -- which I may have asked before, but who's counting...

When you play ball, which NBA player do you most try to emulate? Or, for the non-delusional among us, which NBA player do you take as your inspiration, since we can only dream of emulating pros' skills?

My guy is Dennis Rodman. As I explained long ago: ...My favorite player growing up in the mid-90s was Dennis Rodman. I was an undersized power forward on my junior high teams that won exactly one game over two seasons. I couldn't shoot and couldn't create off the dribble. But the Worm showed me I could still rebound like mad and play good defense.

One part unathletic white guy. One part hyper coordinated super facilitator.

If you walked in to an office depot and saw John s standing there in managers uni, would you think, “that guy plays professional basketball?” me neither.

Gary Payton

I’ve never been great on offense. Not a great 3pt shooter. I like to contribute by distributing and I play hard on defense. I can’t really think of anything else. Realistically I should be choosing Bruce Bowen but I can’t bring myself to do that. I wish I could pick Tim Hardaway but my crossover isn’t nearly good enough

Deron Williams

In my youngest years I’d say Muggsy Bogues (I even tried to emulate his shooting style with your legs spread and toes pointing in). Then in High School I’d say it was White Chocolate Jason Williams. Tried to be a little too flash, could score decently. Now, as an adult, I’ve gained some weight and have started to pound people. I play rough defense, lots of pushing and shoving. I get to the basket and use my body to create space and try to make the right pass at all times. I’m a reliable 3 point shooter and free throw shooter. By the way, I suck. That doesn’t make me like Deron Williams, I’m just saying…

Ive got a hook shot like George Mikan and a sky hook like Kareem.
My regular shot is like Dirk Nowitski.
I rebound and block shots like Gerald Wallace.
I dribble and penetrate the lane like Shawn Bradley.

jerry lucas

I actually do have a hook shot and will take 100 different variations on it from anywhere within 12-15 feet. Jerry Lucas was my inspiration as a kid. When the Knicks got him for that second championship team I was overjoyed. Also, as an extremely offense-oriented small/power forward I was woefully inadequate as a defensive rebounder when forced on occasion to play center in a zone (go figure— I was an excellent offensive rebounder from any of four positions, including center, but a total stiff as a defensive rebounder from that position) so I began to emulate Bill Walton’s arms-spread-behind-him posture— he’s doing this in lots of pictures from that era— to create a bit more space when rebounding, which helped a little bit. Later, I studied Kevin McHale’s swiveling and juking under the hoop in order to draw more shooting fouls. I still got hammered every time I touched the ball and didn’t really get many more calls but adding a couple of moves didn’t hurt, and taking his attitude as justification for my own never passing out from the paint allowed me to become an even more conscience-less offensive player, which was actually a good thing. I am now semi-retired from the game and trying to avoid emulating every former jock who grows fat as soon as they get home and hit the couch.

Billups/ Deron Williams

Control the Speed of the Game, Use body to finish over Bigs, Post up on smaller PGs, Good 3 ball, Great mid range game, Floaters. nice passer good court vision. And my favorite the Pull up 3 top of the Key before the D gets set ( alla Billups)

This is making me want to ball How about a ROF pick up game David?

I play like Lamar Odom

Im 6feet going into 8th grade but I am only kinda good under the basket but I have crazy handles and have been looked at by scouts for my passing ability. I also have the high release turnaround jumper like Dirk.

I'm a coach and a non-player.

I do though, steal inspiration from Mugsy Bogues and have used his “Don’t Tell Me No” video as a motivator for the girls on the soccer team.

Well

Used to drain long range 3s like Thunder Dan Majerle
Then started driving the lane with a shoulder dropped like Karl Malone
Now…
I’m more of a mix of Matt Geiger and Adam Morrison
I love the game and I can get rebounds, but I look uneasy on the court
I can hit shots anywhere at times, but not all the time

Drexler

HUGE Portland fan growing up. I couldn’t touch the rim, much less “glide.” Still, I patterned all my inside drives after him (at least in my mind).

by Newsinz on Aug 18, 2010 7:54 PM EDT reply actions

hmm... good question

im going to say that my sprit baller is Larry Johnson.
im not particularly big, but i do play between the 3 and 4 positions anyway. i focus on using my “hops” to rebound the ball, and (hate to brag but…) i play outstanding Gerald Wallace quality defense.
as for scoring, i’m not a first or second option on a decent team, but almost all of my points come from drives to the basket or some type of mid-range shot. i get lucky from time to time and “dunk” the ball, if you count using the backboard on a dunk dunking.
but nonetheless, i dont bang in the post because of my size, i bang in the post because of my wits, timing, and hops.
granted, i dont have freakishly long arms like LJ, nor can i do insane dunks like him, but you wouldnt exactly expect LJ to bring the ball up the court, cross somebody out, and then drain a step-back 3. and neither can i.

i used to tell people that i play like Kevin Durant only because i’m really scrawny and somewhat long, but then i remembered that i dont have a deadly automatic jump shot. i can get to the rim like Durantula though.

Flip Murray!!

I tried to answer this question for a few years, and the best answer I could come up with was Manu Ginobili cuz I score in a bunch of nifty ways and when I’ve got the touch going I can be pretty deadly…

I still maintain that I play a lot like Manu, but once I saw Flip play full time I felt like I was watching myself (albeit a black version). An aggressive guard with the ability to score creatively. My outside shot is a lot like his in that it’s a little inconsistent but when he gets it going he’s deadly. I also have the same exact streakyness, where I vacillate from being the best offensive player on the court to being kind of low-percentage…

anyway, same movements, same style, same game…I am Flip Murray

Gerald Wallace is the way, the truth, and the light

I thought about going with Flip becasue he was a Bobcat

I can get on a hot streak and hit ridiculous clutch shots if i’m on fire.

But my D is better, and i don’t miss free throws. Repeat. I do NOT miss free throws. C’mon Flip!

How can somebody be as good as Flip Murray, get paid millions to play basketball, yet still step up to the line and clang free throws?

Dell Curry

High basketbal IQ. Always in the right spot (on D and O). I can still nail any open jumper. And i don’t miss free throws.

Not really a star, or maybe even a starter, but you want me on your team.

But i have mad D and can handle the rock, so maybe Ron Harper.

Lights out!

Definitely Reggie Miller.

I used to have a Reggie Miller jersey and began playing ball in it rather than just rocking it as a fashion statement. I also was a dead eye three point shooter (and pretty much nothing else), so it went together perfect. However, not being one to try to take another man’s name and violate copyright laws, I changed my name to Reggie Iller (iller, as in sicker-my game is sick). That was about 8 years ago when I came up with that name. To this very day, my friends still call me that every time I take a 3.

Shawn Kemp

I used to abuse people on the low post offensively, and had the speed to get by most of them to drive right by them. Unfortunately I’d have to shoot lay-ups cuz I couldn’t quite dunk it. LOL

well I WANTED to

be Shawn Kemp, but I turned out more like Boris Diaw. I can help out, and rebound ok. I’m undersized, and pudgy. I jack up 3’s like mad and only make a small percentage, but atleast I don’t smell.
