"The Choice"

I'll call it "The Choice" because I don't want LeBron mad at me.

Star-divide

What is "The Choice"?

This is the new given...Carmelo is going to be gone from Denver.

That said...where is he going?  Will Denver trade him or sign and trade him?

I was under the assumption that New York can't afford him...and if he wants to be in the NY area...then that leaves the Nets as his arrival place.  So that would mean that he's heading to Nets...but for who?  Also...that means CP3 will want to head to the Nets also?  How will Amare get there?

What does the last days of the offseason hold for us?

I am thinking we will see Carmelo move...and if he is...who else is moving around, and what impact will that have on us.

Thoughts?

No, the Knicks CAN afford him

especially next year. The problem is they have few assets to offer in a trade that would not gut the team they wish to build. You have to start with Curry because of his contract, then add Chandler or Gallinari (the replacement for Melo) and Turiaf. Probably have to add a pick or 2. That’s it…anything else and you’ve got Amare, Melo and the reserve cast from “CATS” trying to play basketball. The Nuggets may want a lot more, like Randolph, Azubuike, Chandler and Curry for Melo and a turd to be named later.

by Bassnote on Aug 17, 2010 12:08 PM EDT reply actions

Yea NY is far more likely than Jersey at this point

I bet the knicks are hoping that Melo doesn’t have to be traded at all and just signs with them as a FA. I’d hate to see Randolph get traded away from NY as well. He’s perfect for D’antoni’s system and a front line of Randolph, Amare, and Melo would be fun to watch.

by and1droid on Aug 17, 2010 12:35 PM EDT up reply actions

So they can afford him...at the cost of having 2 stars and nothing else.

But it will be hard to dump Curry…

Do you think Carmelo will be there at the start of the season…I think the Nuggets either sign and move, or just move him before the season starts…

Unfortunately, NY will have to wait on CP3

unless some 3 team deal arises, moving Okafor to Charlotte, CP3 to NY, and moving Felton to Charlotte…

http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=27c4c3z
You have to mentally add Felton to this for it to work…

I am assuming that since Melo is gone that Billups is as good as gone. With their two stars gone they will be in rebuild mode. I think they might look to move Nene as well if they are completley rebuilding. My question is if the Nuggets make a deal with the Knicks including Curry would they even be interested in Dampier’s contract? If so I would do a trade like this.

Billups
Nene
for
Dampier
Augustin
Diaw
Henderson / Draft Pick

What do you guys think?

No point throwing in Hendo and a draft pick. Maybe a draft pick…
For comments Dave Hanners had to say about Hendo, I believe they will be taking a chance on him.
Everyone liked to see all he was and is doing to get PT.
They liked seeing his “not settling” for sitting on the bench.
Willingness to work in the off season.

Yeah I would like this deal but I would think that Denver would want DJ to be apart of a deal. They would need a backup for Lawson and DJ would be attractive to them.

by Bcat2.0 on Aug 17, 2010 12:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Why trade DJ?

He’s currently our best option at PG unless we have another deal in the works. Nobody knows if Livingston can play large minutes an entire game.

by JDuaneHipps on Aug 17, 2010 12:54 PM EDT up reply actions

Livingston is our best option in my opinion at PG. All of his stats were better than DJ last year Points Assist and espesially FG% DJ 38% Livingston 51% not to mention like 8 inches.

by Bcat2.0 on Aug 17, 2010 1:07 PM EDT up reply actions

...and a knee that can't play 40 mins if needed

DJ could be successful as our starting PG, but if he’s traded I guess we’ll never know.

by JDuaneHipps on Aug 17, 2010 1:09 PM EDT up reply actions

In all honesty I'm not trying to hate on your trade or any trades...

but with that being said IF we were to make that trade it would not be enough to put us over the top in the East. We would also be trading away the last bit of young talent we need to pray develops for us. If we aren’t getting back a star we need to see what DJ and Hendo have and how good they can be in the NBA. Let’s not forget in 2 years we owe our draft pick to the Bulls. So it is essential we hang onto some young talent to develop them.

by JDuaneHipps on Aug 17, 2010 12:45 PM EDT up reply actions

I know it won't put us over the top...

It nets us a premier PG for 2 seasons…
I was just asking about Carmelo…but this turned into trade suggestions again…and I am trying to see what would work.

So…
Just for the sake of Trade Machine working…
http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=22u347a
There is a crazy option…that no one in their right mind would take.

I don’t want to play trade machine…I was just asking about movement with Carmelo…

by andrewlail76 on Aug 17, 2010 12:51 PM EDT up reply actions

I wasn't meaning you...

I was talking to Bcat2.0. I personally think Carmelo ends up in NYC. If it gets closer to the deadline they will take best offer on the table & the team would want guarantee Carmelo would resign.

by JDuaneHipps on Aug 17, 2010 12:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Cauncey Billups is a Star he is still a top 5 point guard and Nene is one of the Top Centers in the League. I believe this would make us a top 4 team in the East. As for keeping our young talent I believe we should keep Derrick Brown and try to keep Gerald Henderson. But i think DJ has already been replaced with Livingston. Neither are the starting PG of a playoff team which leads me to believe that DJ is gone and we will trade for a Vet starting PG. I disagree i think this trade could put us over the Top.

by Bcat2.0 on Aug 17, 2010 1:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Chauncey is not top 5 PG at this point in his career

Chris Paul
Deron Williams
Derrick Rose
Rajon Rondo
Steve Nash
Tony Parker
Gilbert Arenas
Russell Westbrook

They are all better than a Chauncey entering the twilight of his career.

by JDuaneHipps on Aug 17, 2010 1:08 PM EDT up reply actions

Arenas has to prove himself this year
Parker has to stay healthy

Makes us better for this year only

We are adding players on the wrong side of their careers at large dollars. With no infusion of youth, but whatever floats the fans boats. If this goes down how you all want. It’s your guys bed you’ll have to lie in it in 3 years if not before then.

We talk a lot here, but management makes the decisions. All the trade ideas in the world on this blog aren’t going to make a difference. it’s just for the sake of conversation. But who knows. Maybe we’ll be seeing an ESPN ticker that says, “Nuggets accept deal proposed by andrewlail76, will send Ty Lawson and Birdman to Bobcats for Diop.”

let’s just say be careful what you ask for. You don’t have to be a smartass about it. I’m just wondering do we want a Hawks team for years to come or do we want an Orlando or OKC team for years to come where we only expected to get better.

Just sick of all the negativity

Procton has been missing since the ‘Cats started playing well and this has been a positive, excited community since. Now everything is all doom and gloom. I’d rather have a Hawks team than a Pacers or Warriors team.

I hate doom and gloom

I also hate the negativity
I think we’ll see vastly improved players in Hendo and Brown
DJ may also be on this list, but if it gets mentioned here, it gets torn apart like a chicken in an alligator pit.
No doom and gloom from me, but I do think we need something more at center
I’m positive, but I am not positive enough to have 100% faith that Diop ups his game this season

I don't see Denver trading Melo until the deadline is close, if at all

Why wouldn’t Denver just wait and see how good they are near the trade deadline. They may have a shot to win a title and just decide to go balls to the wall. That’s what I would do. No trade involving an expiring contract (like Curry) makes any sense since Melo is expiring too. Would you rather play the stretch run with an expiring Melo or an expiring Curry? I’m guessing they’ll keep him until the deadline and only move him if they believe they can’t contend for a title and can get valuable assets that are under contract.

I think he most likely leaves via S&T at the end of next season

Not many teams are going to offer them too much when they know they can sign him next year.

by JDuaneHipps on Aug 17, 2010 4:29 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't think so...

I think the stars are still going to make big bucks. You’ll just see the mid-level borderline all-stars taking a serious pay cut.

by JDuaneHipps on Aug 17, 2010 10:15 PM EDT up reply actions

We saw how Lebron quit in the Playoffs and Bosh was called out for completly quitting on his team, I think when a player has one foot out the door they dont put out full effort. That said you may be right they may try to ride it out till the deadline but I know Melo will not kill his self to help a team that he has already left in his mind.

by Bcat2.0 on Aug 17, 2010 7:45 PM EDT up reply actions

I really just hope that if there is any kind of Melo movement, that we can get in on the action. If Melo leaves, the Nuggs will struggle to just make the playoffs. Would make them more likely to have a fire sale for young players and cap space. If we could get Nene and Billups from them, without giving up too much, then i’m all for that. Nene, TT, GW, Jax, and Billups as a starting 5 would be fine with me. I would give us a shot against ANYONE with those boys, and would much rather enter the season with that, then with what we have now. We just couldn’t allow ourselves to give up too much to make it happen. Would need to be smart, or we could hurt ourselves in the near future.

If Melo is traded this summer, the Nuggets

will be looking to unload some bloated contracts like KMart, Nene and Billups. They instantly push the reset button and start rebuilding. On one hand, I don’t see them pulling the trigger until the trade deadline. They have enough talent to get back to the playoffs and their thinking has to be to give it one last shot in hopes of going deep in the playoffs and thus convincing Melo to stay. If they get off to a great start, they don’t trade him and roll the dice. If the struggle early in the season, they may succumb to the trade noise and try and get something in return.
Of course Melo’s trade value is higher now than it would be in Feb so why not do it now. I haven’t a clue as to how this will turn out since I was convinced that CP3 was going to be traded but if he’s on the trading block, I sure hope MJ is on the phone. Here we go:

http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=2db5lrb

and then…

http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=296knnf

CP joins the party in 2 years after Billups retires as does Crash after opting out of his last year. Ahhh, I need a smoke.

Okay, so word is the Knicks are about to make a run at Melo

This is the proposed offer: http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=28lfrzb with a future 1st round pick also heading to Denver.

It’s fairly safe to assume that Anthony would agree to sign a long term deal before the trigger is pulled on this deal, and then presumably the Knicks will try and get Tony Parker as their PG in the offseason.

However, should ‘Melo be open to resigning with the Bobcats we can offer a far better package than New York can offer. Simply put, here’s what I’m proposing and we can argue it now:

If they valued Gallinari highly, maybe

But Melo is expiring so they’re not really saving anything. If I were Denver, I wouldn’t do anything until the deadline. They might be contending and decide to make a run at the West. I’d think a deal that nets an All-Star under contract would be much more attractive.

Melo's more than an all star, he's a top 5 player

And you throw in the point guard who made the Nuggets relevant. For those two players I don’t see how Gerald Wallace, an expiring contract and a few throw-ins are going to get it done.

by and1droid on Aug 18, 2010 12:18 PM EDT up reply actions

I would agree if Melo had three years left on his deal, but he doesn't

He’s leaving next year, simple as that…. Denver know that know and will try to ship him and get something rather than end up Cleveland 2.0.

by James Dator on Aug 18, 2010 1:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Not according to what I've heard James.

It’s my understanding that Denver is going to go the sign&trade route with ‘Melo and will insist on his signing the extension as a condition of helping to get him shopped around the league. They don’t want a lame duck player grousing to leave all season that they wind up getting nothing for. He’s been shopped and nobody is buying a one-year rental.

by Ourdaywillcome on Aug 18, 2010 2:51 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm be more inlcinded to see the deal as reasonable if you threw a lesser player into the mix

but thinking we could get Melo AND Billups and really only give up Wallace and change is pushing it beyond the realm of reality for me.

by and1droid on Aug 18, 2010 4:22 PM EDT up reply actions

I think you need to think of it from the Nuggets point of view

Losing Melo throws them into full tilt rebuilding mode. It’s not like they don’t have any depth at PG, Ty Lawson already looks ready to take over and they’re paying the 34 year old Billups over $13 million this year; tough to justify keeping him when without Melo they’re a bubble 8th seed at best.

Alternatively, you trade Melo and Billups, let K-Mart expire and you get some $20 million under the cap with Gerald Wallace being added to the roster.

Cat Scratch Reader's resident optimist.

by James Dator on Aug 18, 2010 4:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Billups is still very effective

Yea they may be rebuilding, but rebuilding doesn’t mean clearance sale.

I’m sure they would rather pay Billups 13 mil. than paying the money to the players that you offered up from the Bobs.

but we cant get Melo probably without getting rid of Gerald

and Melo isnt worth that for just one year and we know Melo will leave Charlotte. unless he doesnt care about the big and small market crap maybe he just is ready for a change or doesnt like the direction Denver is going. if he would stay i would trade Gerald for him but he wont come out and say exactley why he wants to leave so we have no way of knowing if he would re-sign with Charlotte

by TS BOBCAT on Aug 18, 2010 8:14 PM EDT up reply actions

That's where the sign and trade comes into play.

If he signs his extension with the Nuggets and is set to be traded, the bids for Melo’s services will increase. Nobody wants the one year rental, but the sign and trade keeps that from being an issue. Not wanting to give up Gerald for long term Melo just isn’t smart.

by Mike in KM on Aug 19, 2010 5:05 AM EDT up reply actions

yeah but he wont sign it if he know he is coming to Charlotte

and if the Nuggets get him to sign him to us and he doesnt wanna be here he will just ask for a trade from here. of course we could use him to get a good PG or C like Devin Harris and maybe Brooke Lopez it depends o how desperate New Jersey is

by TS BOBCAT on Aug 19, 2010 9:32 AM EDT up reply actions

What is that based on?

I think scant few people know what Carmelo Anthony really wants, or where he’ll play. Based on the fact he has already said he’s open to New York, Orlando, Houston and New Jersey it shows me that he’s not like LeBron James.

Right now all information is coming to us second and third hand. I think it’s too early for anyone to say that he ‘wont sign if he knows he’s coming to Charlotte’

Brilliant minds think alike!

I’m with you on the Bobcat’s trade being better for Denver. Plus, if we swap Damp for Nene, they’d save more $.

The BIG question is if Melo would sign an extension in the small market of Charlotte. Can MJ make a move to the Queen City lucrative for Melo? I say, hells ya he can! And if we land those Melo you better believe that CP3 will be joining the fun in 2 years. As andrew would say, “wait for it!”

by blueridgecat on Aug 18, 2010 1:41 PM EDT up reply actions

Your sources must be right!

From ESPN:

The Knicks are certainly in the hunt for Carmelo Anthony if Denver indeed decides to trade him.

When rounding up chatter on a potential trade offer earlier this week, we noted the Knicks’ offer could center around Danilo Gallinari.

Frank Isola of the New York Daily News reported on Thursday that “there are reports that the Knicks’ offer would include Eddy Curry’s expiring contract, a future first-round pick and Gallinari, although Donnie Walsh and Mike D’Antoni will try to replace Gallinari with Wilson Chandler in a proposed trade for Anthony.”

But that’s apparently not good enough for Denver.

“What do they have?” a Nuggets source told Isola. “That makes it tough.”

We suppose if the Knicks were to toss in Anthony Randolph or Kelenna Azubuike into this deal along with Gallo and Curry, the Nuggets might be more tempted.

But as the reported offer stands, the Knicks may have some trouble prying Anthony out of Denver if he becomes available.

I am begining to believe my worst fear is about to become reality. We will soon cut Erick Dampier and trade Boris Diaw for Calderon or for a starting Center. I have held out all summer for the Big Trade netting us a Star PG, but the Truth is we will start the season with a bellow average PG rotation and a well below average Center rotation. The only question is now what FA do we sign after we waive Damp. I think we will be 3-4 mil under the Lux tax after Damp is cut.

If and When we Waive Damp who do we sign ?
