Ray Ray to the Knicks?
ESPN is reporting that Raymond Felton is closing in on a deal with the NY Knicks. They have a ton of money to throw around considering they only landed one of the major FAs this offseason. The details:
Two league sources told ESPN.com that the Charlotte Bobcats' unrestricted free agent reached an agreement in principle Friday on the broad parameters of a contract.
The length of the deal has not yet been agreed upon, but Felton will earn a starting salary in the $7 million range.
While I had hoped Ray would stick around in Charlotte after his career season last year, it appears he's looking for a payday as well. I for one am not willing to pay 7mil or more a year for Ray's services.
Cheers Ray, we've had some good times.....

The Knicks overpaid
If he’s getting paid in the $7 million range it could be closer to $8 million.
For that much we got a 23 year old PF with insane upside who’s likely to get even better than what we saw of him in the final 3 months of the season.
They got a 26 year old PG who’s likely to never be better than what we saw last season. In short, they got a slightly better Chris Duhon and are paying almost $5 million more per year for him.
That being said, best of luck to Felton, congrats on the payday and actually I think D’Antoni’s run and gun system is by far the best place for him to go.

On a side note:
The perfect storm in now brewing for the Bobcats to make a big play for a PG either via trade or free agency in 2011.
There remain few teams who need a starting PG who have cap room to sign or trade for a primo player.

Except Thomas gets 12million this year
Almost double what Feltons getting. Not sure they’re the ones who overpaid

Think outside the box my friend
$12 million now means the remainder of the deal is never higher that $7 million

It's still more in at least one year
And I’m not convinced Thomas is more valuable to a team than Felton. We have no clue how T-Time will hold up mentally as a starter. I say we are taking a bigger risk, with potentially a higher reward.
But we are in no position right now to laugh at someone about overpaying.

Wow...
Is tyrus more valuable than Felton? Well I say Tyrus improves us much more over Diaw than Keeping Felton who was peaking under LBs style of play. Was he worth $7mil…nah
$5mil guy…
Can we trade for someone better than Felton with the pieces we got?
Wait for it…

My point is that however Thomas improves us is all speculation right now
I believe and hope he will. But the truth is he could have immense potential that is unloaded this year, or he could be little more than a career backup.

UNDERSTOOD
My point is he’s about the only guy that didn’t give up in the playoffs (last game).
Ray looked like he was going to cry and had the facial expression of…“I gotta get out of here becaues I can’t do crap in this series…”

Agreed. But now he needs to do it over the regular season
In games that are not as significant and when a contract is not on the line

Kinda like Ray couldn't do
when a re-signing was on the line

Not much more for what we offered him last year...
I really feel sorry for Ray (and Amare, to a much lesser extent). New York is nowhere near the storied franchise it once was, and is currently one of the most poorly run organizations I’ve ever seen. I guess the big city lights and extra zeroes on the paycheck make up for living in disarray and a overall lack of direction?
I dunno; maybe they can turn it around. If nothing else, it will be interesting to see how Felton shakes off a few year’s of Larry’s defensive emphasis in order to run & gun with D’Antoni.
Oh well…I’m too excited to find out what MJ’s next move is to dwell on “ancient history.” Add to that Jack’s continuous efforts to become the undeniable leader of this team , and I can honestly say I’ve never been this excited in the offseason (except for maybe right after drafting Ammo, back when a 20 ppg rookie season seemed like a no-brainer to me).

I'll miss the guy
I for one will hope him the best. And it’s hard to pick a better city. I’m still am concerned about how to replace him. Let’s hope something big happens here soon.

I'm just pissed
That we didn’t do a sign and trade…. Get something out of another lost draft pick

He's getting $8.3 million a year.... I stand by my 'DEAR GOD THEY OVERPAID!' statement

Again, it's not like we aren't familiar with over paying
They are doing what they can with what’s available. I’m happy for Ray Ray. Fat pockets in the world’s grandest city. What a dream. I’ll pull for him to some small degree like I’m pulling for Delhomme in Cleveland this season.

I'm happy for the dude

I dont think 8 mil is overpaying, Tyrus got 8 mil for 5 years and he has only been a back up to this point and is unproven and has had issues in his short carear. So for Ray to get the same 8 with less years is not overpaying. I for one will pull for Raymond to be sucessfull in NYC
$1.3 million more a season than Jameer Nelson... who made a mockery of him in the playoffs.
- As much money as Jason Kidd
- $2 million less than Steve Nash
- $2 million less than Rajon Rondo
As a Tar Heel fan it’s a great fit for Felton, but objectively I don’t know how anyone couldn’t think $8.3 million is about $3 million too much for Felton, especially when you put him in the same category as the above PGs.

+1,000,000
N.Y. fans boo. And they boo loud. Remember how they used to unleash on Keith Van Horn anytime he did anything wrong, and he was a Knick? I think that’s going to happen to Ray. A crucial turnover and the fans are going to quickly turn on him.

Definitely!
New York and Boston fans are generous in their adoration but absolutely brutal if you don’t deliver the goods. I don’t think Felton is emotionally prepared at all for that kind of reception. Here in NC he was forgiven his growing pains. In Madison Square Garden he had best bring his A-game on day one or expect to be crucified in the NY Post the following morning and greeted by the Boo-birds the next time he walks on the Garden court.

I guess the easiest statement is
Felton reached his max potential in an LB system…under a new and different system Felton wil continue to grow. We didn’t have the money to keep you until our system changed…
Good Luck to youRay

I disagree.
I think Felton had room to grow and I think Brown, having taken Ray under his wing, had more to teach. Brown’s silence regarding Felton after being such a vocal supporter last season is conspicuous. Either Larry’s BFF Jordan told him that Felton was gone and he didn’t want more than a “no comment” from Brown, or Ray did something and the honeymoon was over between him and Coach.
It will be interesting to see how RayRay does in the Apple. Do you think D’Antoni has things to teach Ray that Brown doesn’t? Just curious. Again, I pay only passing attention to the coaches and rosters of most other teams so I don’t know if the Knicks have a rock-solid coaching team or not.
by Ourdaywillcome on Jul 10, 2010 2:44 PM EDT up reply actions
Do I think d'Antonit has more to teach...NO
I think Ray will play differently in the run and gun…
I think Ray gave up in the playoffs (game 4 specifically) which in turn put Ray on the short list…and LB was told…we’re done with him, so no more…

If what I read about the owners' plans in the CBA negotiations is true
the Knicks can offer Felton $11 million a season after year one. The owners have no intention whatsoever of paying out these huge contracts as written. My personal feeling is that they’re counting on bargaining they’re way out of these contracts too heavily and it may result in being the tipping point when it comes time for the player’s union to sign or get locked out.
More and more I’m coming to believe that the NBA may lose at least part of a season. The players will eventually win I think, because at least half of the 2nd tier NBA team owners desperately need the TV revenue etc. and advance season ticket sales simply won’t be sufficient revenue for them to be able to hold out indefinitely. Meanwhile, the unions in the various leagues have contingency funds and assistance plans in place to help out the lower-paid players that might actually need their paydays and stipends to live on.
