My plan to turn the Bobcats into an Eastern Conference juggernaut in one trade
If there's two things we know about Michael Jordan it's that he is a competitor and a gambler. So, MJ... let's compete and let's gamble, the time is now.
It's clear from the aggressive signing of Tyrus Thomas that the Bobcats are no BS this season, and I think MJ will be damned if he lets everyone else step forward while he stands pat, luxury tax or no luxury tax; look at Tyrus' contract it is $12.5 million up front. This ensures that they go into luxury one year, but avoid it in the future. So, here's my idea that I believe put the Bobcats right behind the Heat as the most relevant team in the South East, and could arguably challenge them, and Boston for the #1 team in the East. It's simple too, get Chris Paul.
Why would this happen? Why would the Hornets trade him? Simple, because they almost did. At the 11th hour before the draft the Portland Trailblazers got cold feet about taking on Emeka Okafor's contract which was an absolute prerequisite to trading for CP3. New Orleans wanted cap flexibility and draft picks and the Blazers weren't willing to pull the trigger. Now, the Bobcats have the ability to offer both.
The steps it would take? Granted, my plan took a slight turn when I heard the Knicks were about to sign Felton... so it added an extra step.
1) Sign and trade Felton to New York for a trade exception. Nothing more, nothing less... let the Bobcats switch second rounders in 2016 or something with a ridiculous stipulation that would never happen.
2) Who wants Diaw? It'll cost you just a second rounder. Obviously someone is interested in Boris Diaw, so if it's a team with cap space ask for nothing but a second rounder. It clears the books and gives someone a player for nothing.
3) The Trade:
Bobcats trade: Tyson Chandler, Nazr Mohammad, DJ Augustin, Future 1st round pick, Two future 2nd round picks
New Orleans trade: Chris Paul, Emeka Okafor
With the trade exception from Felton this deal goes through. $20 million expiring to New Orleans and draft picks.
So, with the front loaded Tyrus Thomas deal the Bobcats are into luxury for roughly $4 million... but in trading Boris and a drop off in Tyrus' money next year they are under the cap (provided the cap stays the same).
What do we think of this roster:
PG: Paul/ Collins
SG: Jackson/Henderson
SF: Wallace/Brown
PF: Thomas/ Jawai
C: Okafor/ Ajinca/ Diop
I'm not thrilled with Sherron Collins as the backup at PG or Jawai at PF, but Chris Paul is good for 38 minutes a game, I trust Collins for 4 minutes; and Tyrus will easily be good for over 35 minutes.
What about the 5? Well, we know what a workhouse Okafor is.
Take another second to look at that roster and tell me the Bobcats couldn't outhustle most of the Southeast. Chris Paul would be the best point guard in the division, they have rebounding, they have scoring, they have shooters... this is a team that could give the Heat a run for their money, despite all their stars the Bobcats exceed them at all 5 positions when you combine them all.
This is a possibility simply because of two reasons:
1) The Hornets are now desperate to shed money
2) Michael Jordan seems willing to take it on and make a run of this now while the iron is hot.
What better way to show LeBron James that he's no Michael Jordan than for Michael the executive to beat LeBron the player?

Dont get our hopes up I better get my season tickets before they shot up like in Mia lol Could you imagine that team? Perfect team to put around CP3 talk about Lock down Deffense.
I like it
Okafor contract is a beast that I’d like to avoid, but if it nets Chris Paul you have to sign off on it. I definitely hope we get a trade exception for Felton. We don’t need anything else from them. The future 1st would be pretty far off. You can only trade them every other year and our 2012 pick goes to the Bulls so it would be 2014.
I know the situation with the 1st rounder, but
You could build a stipulation into the deal that Charlotte will trade the draft rights to whoever they select in the 1st round of 2011 otherwise they surrender multiple picks, and or players… that way basically Charlotte is a puppet selecting for the Hornets

I'd just like to say
MJ is really locked in. Whether it all pans out or not, it seems like he really has a plan in place. I don’t mean that we’re going to get Carmelo or CP3, but he’s giving us options while fielding a competitive team. I think it’s pretty obvious he’s taking this whole ownership thing seriously. A great change from the Bob Johnson years.
Exactly what pieces did the proposed Portlant/N.O. comprise of?
Paul and Roy together would’ve been too great of an opportunity for anyone to pass up.

i saw that
It was rumored that Portland almost got Paul in a trade for a package of Andre Miller, Joel Przybilla, Nicolas Batum, Jerryd Bayless and the 22nd pick to New Orleans for Paul and Emeka Okafor. Why in the world portland did not pull the trigger I have no idea because N.O. was all for it
personally i think its not out of the question that we could land Paul next year...
seems like he wants to be here, be around family and admires Jordan. But he also wants to win a championship…TT would have to beast it this coming year or the Bobcats have to land another top player for this to be a sure thing.
Per Chad Ford
“The Blazers got close to a deal with the Hornets last week that would’ve sent Andre Miller, Joel Przybilla, Nicolas Batum, Jerryd Bayless and the 22nd pick to New Orleans for Paul before [Hornets GM] Jeff Bower pulled out of the deal, saying that their owner wasn’t ready to trade Paul. The trade they made on draft night got them out of the luxury tax, so that’s no longer the issue. The issue is whether Paul is now unhappy enough to force a trade. Personally, I think the Hornets can do better than that for Paul, but it’s a viable deal.”

Hmm... I heard from another source that Portland pulled out.
I wish I could find it, but the source alluded to the above deal but as they got closer to consummating the deal New Orleans insisted that Okafor would have to be part of the trade and it killed the deal for the traditionally ‘build through the draft’ Blazers.

Who are the shooters you are referring to?
Paul?
I think the PG and PF backups are major sore spots. One or 2 injuries and we’d be screwed. Of course LB would make some off the wall move to bring more vets in. We’ll never have another draft pick again… But the way LB works, so what?
on behalf of tha dirty south: soul food, carolina blue, southern hospitality, and tha queen city
Isn't that the same as it is right now? Injuries at PG and PF and we're screwed?
The shooters I’m referring to are:
- Paul (0.493 FG%, 0.409 3P%)
- Stephen Jackson (0.423 FG%, 0.323 3P%)
- Sherron Collins (0.758 3P% yeah, I know it’s only summer league)
- Gerald Henderson (Looks like he’s found a jump shot)

I wouldn't consider that much of an improvement from last year
Especially considering it was one of our biggest needs. But I think LB doesn’t really care much about shooters. He wants to attack the paint, get to the foul line and play defense.

Pretty much.

Some of the summer league guys listed are sucking up the summer league.
Make N.O. take Diop and a 1st rounder for a serviceable player. Then sign some real second string player with the money we save from dumping Diop.
I think Paul and Okafor are a bigger upgrade than the loss on the bench of Nazr and Chandler

on behalf of tha dirty south: soul food, carolina blue, southern hospitality, and tha queen city
Other than the Hornets are willing to shop him for cap space and someone to take Okafor's contract... nothing
What really set it off for me from the frontloaded nature of Thomas’ contract… that really makes it possible for the Bobcats for pay luxury tax this year, but remain under the cap in 2011.
Couple this with a likely raise in the cap (as the concept of the Heat will bring more revenue to the NBA) and it starts to make all the sense in the world.
Sure, MJ has to pay now- but the growth of the franchise, season tickets, everyone would grow ten fold. The Bobcats can look like David to Miami’s Goliath- the team who pulled all the strings to challenge the Heat on their own terms. What do you bet all those 81% of NBA fans who detested LeBron’s move would adopt the Bobcats as a second team, they would be the blue collar bulldogs harassing the Heat in their ivory tower. Charlotte would get more nationally televised games… it just makes sense on so many levels.

Ha! I'm starting to buy what you're selling James
It was also mentioned that Jordan is willing to pay luxury tax only IF he can land star talent. You are correct, sitting tight will not increase revenue. But spending money now to bring in a star, AND create a potential contender is exactly what he needs to get our tails in the seats.
Bravo James… If this doesn’t go down, at least it was fun briefly believing in.

Per Bill Simmions:
A few weeks after the 2008 Summer Olympics, Someone Who Knows Things told me the following rumor: LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh and Chris Paul became such good friends during the 2007 Olympic trials, and then during their 2008 Olympics excursion in Beijing, that they actually made a pact in China to play together. You know, like one of those pacts in a chick flick where two friends agree to get married if both of them are single when they turn 40.
As the rumor went, the 2010 free agents (LeBron, Wade and Bosh) would sign with the same team (at that point the Knicks if they created enough cap room), then Paul would join them in 2012 (or sooner).
GSO
I don't see any way that can happen
The contracts have been structured now: $16.6 million per for James and Bosh and $15.7 million per for Wade. These aren’t front loaded, they’re stable which totals $48.9 million per season.
Unless Chris Paul is willing to play for $8 million there is no way the Heat can sign another free agent for over the minimum in the next 5 years. They also wont have any contracts large enough to get the Hornets to trade for him.
3 max contracts is obscene enough… there is no way (bar some ridiculous loophole in a new CBA) that any team could have four players on max contract.

I've read this a lot too
But what if Paul could make a lot more money on a team that could compete with them in the role of everybody’s favorite underdog instead? One with a hof owner and hof coach that loves PGs. I know a team just like that Paul!

I dunno.
Georgie boy keeps insisting that he’s not shopping CP3 and that there’s no way he’ll trade the man. We all know how reliable Schinn is, right? He means what he says so much he even says it when the media aren’t around. He picks up the phone, calls ESPN and says, “Just thought you would want to know I’m still not trading CP3, nosiree Bob.”
He’s promised the fans that he’s not trading CP3.

The last part of this whole crazy scenario:
In the upcoming days keep an eye on the Dallas Mavericks.
Dallas is one of the few teams who could land Paul in a trade based on the expiring contracts of Erick Dampier, DeShawn Stevenson and Caron Butler. They would covet Paul almost as much as we do. Plus, they would be able to clear enough money with these three gone that they could take back James Posey from NO also, a player that they want gone too.
They are holding onto Dampier’s contract like it’s their life because now it’s one of the largest expiring contracts in the NBA. The Timberwolves are trying to wrestle it away for Al Jefferson… pray that this deal goes through because if Dallas send Dampier anywhere there is almost no team in the league other than us who could and would send enough expiring contracts for Paul.

Why? Scola would be GREAT for Charlotte.
He’s very underrated. And it would also be a sure sign that Diaw is getting the hell out, which puts a HUGE smile on my face. It would create a dilemma on who to start and who not, but other than that, I think it’s great. Combine that with the fact that the Rockets will match our offer anyway to keep him, and it’s really not doing anything other than making Scola a richer man at the worst.

He's played some center in the past.
But he’s only 6’9" so I don’t think he can bang around in the paint or post up with the true big men in the league very well.

Oh, and by the way... just so I can show my work:
http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=2dubbyo
ESPN just updated the trade machine so you can use Chandler and Nazr in trades.
Here is another more attractive solution for the Hornets involving Cleveland… and it’s insane, so bear with me (classic rosterbation here):
http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=2bnpemr
Cleveland have expressed a desire to raid the market for talented players who may not have lived up to their potential.
So, they get Augustin, Henderson and Ajinca from us, and Julian Wright from the Hornets… all of whom fit this bill. Furthermore, Julian Wright was a Bryron Scott draft pick… so he may think he has the potential to grow.
We get not only Paul and Okafor from the Hornets, but Daniel Gibson and JJ Hickson who have been shopped recently. Gibson slots in perfectly behind Paul for the new look Bobcats, Hickson has played center and would backup Okafor.
It has to be mentioned that New Orleans also gets draft picks from Charlotte like I mentioned before, but in this scenario they get $29.4 million expiring, and rid themselves of Okafor’s and Posey’s contracts…. which they really want to do.
Cat Scratch Reader's resident optimist.

The wheels are moving
Boris Diaw to Toronto for a trade exception.
Since we didn’t sign and trade Felton for an exception we just got one with Diaw… essentially he was ‘traded for nothing’ just like step 2 called for.
Now we have the exception we can acquire James Posey from New Orleans also… a player they want to get off the books.
