The Non-Lebron Thread: Game 5 of the Bobcats Summer League
Please, don't even mention his name, I'm sick of it. This thread is for talking about our last glimpses of Gerald Henderson, Derrick Brown, and Alexis Ajinca before the season starts. Pay attention, there are some other interesting young players on our Summer League squad. Alade Aminu and Nate Jawai in particular have done some work in the first four games in Orlando, and may be worth a closer look in training camp. There a few PG prospects that have also provided inconsistent, albeit intriguing, play throughout the week, and may also warrant a training camp invite. Keep your eyes on Sherron Collins, Denis Clemente, and Jeremy Pargo in today's game.
For those of you who do not have NBA.com access or NBATV, there other....more nefarious websites from which to stream the game. Do a little googling, join the discussion.
And now without further ado, discuss!!!!

Check out Jax's thoughts on LeBron signing
Jackson says he “loves it” and contends the Heat are not invincible. But the guard indicated Friday his teammates need to get in the gym now since "it’s going to be even harder.
LOVE how he’s being a vocal leader and leading by example. So glad we have him and so glad Larry Brown is helping him grow his potential as a player, teammate, and leader. I look forward to the Heat. Gerald Wallace on LeBron, Jack on Wade, T-Time (hopefully) on Bosh, 4 centers pounding them on drives to the lane… Should be fun.
That's actually a nice matchup
Hendo can be a pesky defender if the bench too. What would be nice is if Miami can’t afford much of starting role players, and we had solid PG and Center play to help balance out our lack of hall-of-fame talent.

Sorry about bringing up LeBron
just loved what Jax said and didn’t want to start a new thread.
What does any of this have to do with LeBron James?

I know but... Why not???
Why aren’t we talking about LeBron is what I’m asking ;)

True, you raise a good point.
Consequently, every wikipedia page has been changed to a link to Lebron’s new twitter page.
I just wish I could breath LeBron, other than this oxygen crap

Henderson not starting
Perhaps some rest or just coming off the bench I suppose
Lemonade was a popular drink and it still is,
I get more props and stunts than Bruce Willis
- Guru, of Gangstarr
He's been grabbing/stretching his hamstring all week but especially yesterday
Nothing serious it seems, but nice to get some rest before it actually gets hurt.
Oop called us the Hornets
no harm, he caught it unlike most of the real nba game announcers

They just cut to MJ sitting in the crowd.....the most serious MJ face I've ever seen at a Summer League
Ajinca has to work on the fouls.. seriously...
He wont be able to play over 10 minutes at this rate

Sherron Collins is looking very good too...
This is promising. Last game and this one he seems to be getting the picture

Collins has a nice scoring touch
But he is not running the offense effectively. Honestly, all three of the young PGs on the roster seem to look for their shot more often than they look to pass. The Cats need scoring, but not from that position. DJ is the only smallish PG scorer Charlotte needs. I would be surprised to see any of these guys in training camp. LB will probably find a veteran.

Jeremy Pargo is no longer listed on NBA.com for the summer league roster
Not even listed as a ‘DNP’ for today… did they cut him?

I think he's on another team in Vegas
Most of the guys double dipping on summer league rosters left today for Vegas.
Gotcha
So, should we assume then that the players on today’s roster have been informed that the Bobcats are still interested in them? or more interested than the ones who left?

Everything is up in the air until training camp invites are doled out.
Some guys are under non-guaranteed contracts already with teams who want them in camp. Not sure who qualifies for the Cats. But all of the guys who the coaches want in camp have probably been offered an invite or will soon get one.
If he can hit threes this regularily we'll find him a home
I still want a vet, but the potential is there.

Ajinca fades away almost everytime he takes a shot
It’s like he is afraid of contact. I know he has a slight build, but at some point he needs to go up strong.
"I could never be a thug, they don't dress this well." - Malice
I noticed that too.
Every outside shot is a fadeaway and every time he gets inside he leans back his shoulders like he needs a better look at the hoop. If he makes the squad you just know that Brown will climb all over him about that. Maybe he just needs a pair of those cool skull & crossbones glasses like Charlie Sheen in Major League!

I would think this means Felton is out, but I also saw something saying that nobody is willing to give him what he’s asking for.
His agent didn't strike while the iron was hot
There were rumored $6-7 million deals available when free agency started but they gambled that someone would overspend and they lost.
Maybe we can bring him back for cheap(er). All along I’ve said I love Felton at $4-5 million but hate it for any higher, but now it’s going to be tough to sell him on a deal with that much after giving Tyrus $8 million.

Aren't we over the luxury tax now too?
$76 million before T2’s contract sets in… Something else in the works? Or is MJ really confident with this team?
I take this back
HoopsHype (and my calculator) say we have $60 million before TT contract, ESPN says $76 million… weird. Looksl ike we can fit Felton for 5-6 mil
We don't know the structure of his contract
He could have backloaded it like this:
4/5/9/11/11
Then the big money kicks in after Diaw is gone (even if we keep him) and right when Diop is scheduled to be gone.
This would mean a $2.5 million cut for this season.

Good point
Hopefully the last year or 2 are team options. What are the rules on salary increases on a restricted free agent? 8%? Very interested in the terms of this contract. Carry this conversation to the dedicated thread?
According to the NJ Star
That means his first-year salary is $12 million, a chatty agent tells us.

Great news! And I love the sources remarks
Yahoo…
At times, Thomas flourished under coach Larry Brown, and he was anxious to return and play for him
MSNBC…
Thomas will indeed be returning to Charlotte, where he has the best chance to unleash his immense potential with a coach he respects in Larry Brown
And my favorite, NJ Star Ledger…
The ONLY reason a kinder, gentler, more nurturing Larry Brown got three good months out of him was by saying, "You’re three months away from the end of your NBA career"
… to keep the Nets at bay, the Bobcats made him absurdly rich for a third-rate power forward
… Don’t misunderstand: Tyrus is undoubtedly one of the most dazzling athletes the league has
Say what?!@#?
on behalf of tha dirty south: soul food, carolina blue, southern hospitality, and tha queen city
Yeah, they're not bitter at all that they missed out on EVERY FREE AGENT
Don’t worry… soon we wont need to hear from the NJ Star Ledger it will be all about the Brooklyn Eagle.
They still have Snookie’s panties in a bunch because Boozer wouldn’t even give their pathetic ‘team’ the time of day, and by the time they get decent Brook Lopez will be gone.

This shows that Gerald Wallace is one of the best bargains in the league. He’s making just under $10 million as an all-star. We’re so lucky.
at least we arent Atlanta
we should pour one out for the homies in the ATL

Are we seriously trying to get Chris Paul?
I heard you guys talk about it. But them someone else today told me this is something they are seriously looking into. Please explain… Don’t want to get too worked up over a rumor.
on behalf of tha dirty south: soul food, carolina blue, southern hospitality, and tha queen city
I responded in another
All I’m saying is that the Hornets are willing to do it for expiring contracts and if someone takes Okafor… Portland could have done the deal, but pulled out because they would have had to gut their roster (no big expiring contracts, all little ones) and take Okafor who really didn’t fit what they’re trying to do.
I’m telling you, something is up… it’s that weird quietness that normally precedes the Cats pulling a move. Couple this with Stephen Jackson’s swagger and lack of a fight for Felton and I think there is definitely something up… but like all good trades if we hear rumors from the media it’s unlikely to happen.
If George Shinn allows Jordan to trade for him it will honestly start him on the road to forgiveness.

Sounds like we’d have to trade Wallace and/or Jack to get Paul from NO.
on behalf of tha dirty south: soul food, carolina blue, southern hospitality, and tha queen city
The team president isn't the man writing the checks... nor is he the GM
George Shinn wants to sell the Hornets… he’s desperate to do so. To do that they need to clear money from the books.
Of course a team official isn’t going to say he’s actively shopping his All-Star because if they can’t pull a trade you have a malcontent on your hands.

BEWARE! I'M ABOUT TO ROSTERBATE!!!!!
Here’s a mind blower for you:
Felton goes to New York. The Bobcats turn right around and trade Chandler, McGuire, Diaw, and Augustin to the Knicks for Felton and Eddy Curry.
Do the numbers work? No idea.
Am I talking out of my stinkhole? You betcha.
Why bother? Just to illustrate that I do believe a trade of that size or extent is in the offing for the Bobcats in the next week or so.
Something’s about to happen, and I bet it’s gonna be surprisingly big.

Sherron Collins scoring 32pts but not enough to win..
HE is good scorer and have a descent 3pt shooting. Maybe MJ was impressed in that game and sign him as our future PG so that he can trade DJ and Diaw for a veteran PG like Fisher, Ridnour or TJ Ford.
Sherron looked great offensively: 7-3pt's, 32pts, 57% FG
Ok it’s one game, but we need shooters! Let him come off the bench as a SG or with the 2’s at PG and drain some shots. If he can shoot like this with the big boys, then LB should be able to coach him up enough in other areas to be a solid backup PG.

My conspiracy theory and rumor center of my brain are going into overdrive
If you’ve watched the Summer league games as I have you’ve seen a distinct lack of passing by the point guards. It seems that all of them: Pargo, Collins, Clemente and McNeal were given a mandate to shoot a lot, rather than distribute the ball.
Is this the best way to get a roster spot as a point guard? Shoot all the time and rarely pass? Maybe, if it’s the Charlotte Bobcats…
Think about it, if the Bobcats really wanted a pass first point guard then wouldn’t they have told the players that’s what they wanted? It was almost like when the Summer league team was selected they chose players who were known for their scoring prowess rather than their distribution. If the Bobcats have a plan to get a PG via trade wouldn’t it then make sense to work out players for what you need, in this case a 3P shooting backup? They would want another scorer off the bench, no neccesarily a passer. So, coaches could have told the PGs in Summer league they wanted to see their shooting rather than their passing ability.

I'm on the same page with you again... Scary!
Summer league is not 1st about winning, it’s about getting minutes for guys like Brown and Hendo, and evaluating how other guys might meet a need. I don’t think anyone on our staff really expects one of these guys to ever be our future PG. They are not looking for someone to run the team, they are looking for whoever might be able to fill a small need. And shooting off the bench is our need.
Plus you got to think LB would be more able to teach a young, open-minded guy how to manage the team, then he can teach them how to shoot. Reach for the latter, coach up the former… Makes sense to me.

I know... being on the same page with you is a weird feeling.... lol
Furthermore, Sherron Collins is basically a less talented, less multi-faceted DJ Augustin. If you really could be packaging Augustin into a trade as an expiring contract wouldn’t it make sense to find a player who has one of his characteristics (in this case three point shooting)? That way if you trade for a Chris Paul etc. you have a guy who can step in for 5-8 minutes a game and shoot threes.

LOL... I don't want to get anyone's hopes up... but...
To me it’s like the Stephen Jackson situation. It was a trade sitting out there that made too much sense for the Bobcats not to do. We speculated about the possibility then went dormant while numerous rumors flew around that Jax was going to go to another team.
Then BAM before you know it he’s a Bobcat. If there’s one thing that the team has shown us it’s when our name is being thrown around in numerous trade rumors (Felton sign and trade, Beasley, signing Luis Scola) there ends up being enough misdirection that the mass media write off a real lead as ‘just enother rumor’ and then the Bobcats sucker punch everyone with a trade.
At this point all I’m offering is conjecture… because from where I sit Chris Paul is sitting out there ripe for the picking. The Oklahoma City Thunder, Portland Trail Blazers and now Miami Heat (through FA) showed the NBA the value of cutting cap, salting the earth and starting over with draft picks and cap space. Couple this with an owner desperate to sell a team and a scenario emerges that you never would have seen 5 years ago.
