LeBron James LeBron James LeBron James -- Open LeBronapocalypse Thread

For those of you who will be tuning in to see LeBron James's Ego in full effect tonight (UPDATE: And if you are, how can you resist watching this live feed of a Cleveland viewing party?), here are your resources to keep an eye on:

SB Nation sites

Fear the Sword -- Full-fledged meltdown is not out of the question.

SBN Cleveland -- Where, sadly, turning to the other teams in the area doesn't do much good.

Blog-a-Bull -- Still maintaining hope that LeBron sees the light and joins the best team available.

SBN Chicago -- You think they're riding high from the Blackhawks? Midwesterners will never get cockier than if LeBron chooses the Bulls.

Posting and Toasting -- Knicks fans see the dream slipping away and suddenly find themselves rooting for a turnaround sparked by a guy who Bill Simmons astutely points out has "a bad knee and a bad eye [and] who hasn't played defense in six years." Ruh-roh.

SBN New York -- Having lived in Manhattan, if LeBron decides to go elsewhere, I can assure you a good chunk of New Yorkers will convince themselves they're too good for him and that he was afraid of all the "pressure" they'd put on him.

Peninsula Is Mightier -- Just don't remind them that the NBA plays with five men on the court, not three.

Star-divide

Non-SBN sites of note

Cleveland Frowns -- My college buddy, Pete, has made an art form of calling out mainstream media's irrational responses to the LeBron circus.

NY Mag, The Sports Section -- Will Leitch. Need I say more?

Ball Don't Lie -- Trey Kerby is The Man, and Kelly Dwyer is also The Man, in another, equally awesome, way. And Dwyer's a Bulls fan, to boot.

LeBron will shock the world tonight and anounce he’s always dreamed of playing for the Clippers. Then he’ll suffer a freak, career ending knee injury during warmups for the season opener.

Now that Miami has 3 players that can dominate pretty much by themselves

I wonder if they’d sign me to play PG for a measily NBA salary. I mean it’s not like it matter who else is on the team… Give me a shot and I’ll do it ultra cheap

So I'm trying to watch the summer league game

And there’s more talk about “DECISION 2010” than there is about the action on the court.
The next 90 minutes are going to be the longest hour and a half EVER.
PLEASE GOD let it end!!!!!!!

I was in disbelief when NBATV cut away from the game and went to that DECISION 2010 special

I know the Cats are “just playing a summer league game”, but that game is more important to me than where LeBron decides to play.

For me it's kinda like this:

Here is the location of those who just can’t get enough of Lebron:

And Here’s where I am:

Predictions not having to do with play on the court, per se

I believe Cleveland ticket sales and attendance reduced by 50%. Their economy and downtown area will be reduced significantly.

My hope is that the team will eventually become so insignificant that it moves to Seattle and becomes the Sonics. Lord knows Seattle loves basketball more than Cleveland

Allow me to add one to the list.

The toughest job in the NBA just became being point guard for the Miami Heat.
Three superstars all screaming for their isolation play so they can bump the stats and hit the highlight reel. Every night. Every game. Every possession in every 2nd half. This followed by two superstars threatening the poor bastards life for calling the play for the other guy.

LeBron was so classless to the Cleveland Cavaliers

Why couldn’t he have told them the night before free agency started that he was going to leave the organization?

That way they could have scrambled and at least tried to spend the dollars vacated by LeBron on making a pitch to Rudy Gay, Dirk Nowitzki, David Lee or another free agent that could have benefited them.

I don’t believe for a second that LeBron ‘Only came to this decision this morning, after talking to my momma’ he knew about this ploy 4 years ago when Wade, Bosh and LeBron all decided on their 4 year extensions.

As it stands Cleveland are now screwed for 2010. All the top free agents are gone, they have cap room and nobody to spend it on. Couple this with some terrible contracts trying to surround LeBron with talent (Varejao, Jamison).

Nowitzki would have POUNCED on the chance to play for the Cavs.

When the Trio had their dinner meeting together before the playoffs were over they planned this out. A person would have to be an idiot to not see that in hindsight. I figured LeBung would have stayed in Cleveland based on the large number of irons he has in the fire with local charities and businesses in Cleveland and Akron that he wouldn’t want to leave behind. I also thought he was smart enough to see that three big stud stars in their prime would be too many sharks in one fishbowl. Go figure.

You’re definitely right about Cleveland’s fortunes though. They’re largely screwed unless they find a way to ream someone else out of good players. You know, like frontloading a contract to snag a good player from a team with a tight budget. The Tyrus drama isn’t over by any stretch.

by Ourdaywillcome on Jul 8, 2010 11:02 PM EDT up reply actions

I am with you to an extent

LeBron probably knew he wasn’t coming back to Cleveland a long time ago. However, the Cavs front office should have had a better contingency plan. You never put all your eggs in one basket, especially when that basket has a chance to live on Miami. Ultimately, they dug their own graves by staying flat footed and having blind faith in LeBron. They knew he was wishy washy and they didn’t do enough to cover their bases.

Who knows what was said behind closed doors?

This wasn’t a scenario of a team merely offering more money than they could match (like us with Felton), it was a scenario where the Cavs could have given him $30 million more than what he got from the Heat.

In its simplest terms he lied. He said numerous times over his career that provided the ownership of the Cavaliers were committed to winning he would remain there, and they surrounded him with a good enough team to be the #1 team in the NBA during the regular season.

All I know is it appears the Cavaliers front office and ownership were blindsided by this one. More details will come out in time I’m sure.

I just read (Cavs owner) Dan Gilbert's open letter on the Cavs website.

He doesnt’ pull any punches. In fact, he throws down gangsta-style.
In the letter, he promises that within the next few days he will announce to the people of Cleveland exactly what the team has planned in order to build a championship team in Cleveland and vows that the Cavs will win it all before Lebron and the Heat can. At the end of the letter he also says he is committing his entire capital (read wallet) to the single goal of bringing the “hardware” to Cleveland.

In short, he be pissed.

Seems like sour grapes, but it is true

I don’t see him calling LeBron narcissistic if he had decided to stay, but I do applaud his massive cajones to tell the truth. He isn’t doing any favors for the Basketball Operations guy who has to woo so free agents, though.

This is good news for us, a playoff contender but not a finals contender

We are not a team that can make it to the finals. Which means competing with the NBA’s top team in the playoffs is not a concern. But now we can assume that we are easily better than both Toronto and Cleveland. Meaning we should be safe for about the 6th playoff seed.

by southtunnel on Jul 8, 2010 10:54 PM EDT reply actions

we keep forgetting about a few teams

the Amares (NY) interested to see what they can do
the Boozers (Chicago) no doubt theyre a top 4 team in the East
the Jennings (Milwaukee) improved significantly this year
the Russians (NJ) dont forget that they have all that cap space to spend this year and next

these teams (barring NJ) could all make pushes for the playoffs. unless the Bobcats are better than NJ, NY, Philly, and even Washington, then we may be axed out of the playoffs for another year.
lets be 100 for a second, we havent done anything this year to show that we can make it into the postseason. at all. mostly because of poor decisions in the past (Diop, Carrol, MORRISON), but unless we get a stellar center and a stellar PG, then we can pretty much count ourselves out of the playoff race.

just look at the southeastern conference. 5 teams that all have a legitimate chance at the playoffs. and i’d put the Bobcats at 4th or 5th on that list.

ladies and gentlemen, the East has just became relevant again.

by StudMuffin15 on Jul 8, 2010 11:31 PM EDT up reply actions

I gotta disagree

Not completely, but to an extent anyway.

Unlike a lot of other teams we haven’t (as of yet) lost our core or our primary game plan for this season. The Bobcats will consider this season a success if they don’t lose ground in the win/loss column. If we better our record by even a couple of wins we’ll make the playoffs again. Then it’s just a matter of avoiding a sweep in the first round and this season will be considered an improvement over last. This is the last season of ugly before the mistakes of the past you mentioned begin to get erased from the team – and that’s only if we can’t unload one of the larger contract errors.

Our core coalesced (or congealed depending on your viewpoint I guess) well into the second half of last season. We haven’t really seen the power of the fully armed and operational power station. It we hang on to Thomas we’ll have a pretty fine trio of starters of our own. Last season we had a real bench problem. They could play well or be a disaster depending on which way the wind was blowing. We also had nothing in the go-to guy department and no true sixth man. Although summer league excellence has to be tempered with a grain of salt I am greatly encouraged by the progress Derrick Brown has made and he’s currently playing much better than the average second-rounder. Henderson has added some muscle already and is showing that he has developed a fresh and NBA level jumper to add to his repertoire. Ajinca is a wild card. He’s improved quite a bit from the last time I saw him play for the Cats but there’s no telling if his new bulk and athleticism are NBA good or not until we get into the season. Finally, we have no shortage of middle-of-the-road centers. That’s not a good thing because none are true team leaders. But the silver lining is that they do make decent trade bait. We should be able to package them in a way that we are able to bring in a point guard close to Felton’s skills if not a bit better AND clear some money off the cap in the process.

I don’t expect an NBA finals appearance from the squad this season. But neither does team management. They have realistic goals and so should the fans. The Bobbies won’t be a lot better than last season. But they don’t look to be worse either and that’s okay for now. Our real climb into the upper reaches of the NBA Eastern Conference begins in earnest a year from now.
We’ll get there – I chose my nick to remind myself and others that the future is bright but the present requires some patience.

Much hinges on Tyrus and I fear Cleveland may turn their focus on him now that the King has completed LeRoyal Screwing.
Right now nothing has happened to really hurt the Bobcats as they prep for the coming season. The young blood looks stronger, the coach is still right where he still belongs, and so are 4 of our 5 starters. The loss of Thomas would be a definite blow but there are already signs that Jordan and Company are making contingency plans should that come to pass. I like where they are right now and I like what they’re doing. Your mileage may vary and my opinion could change as everything plays out between now and September, but right now it’s all good, if not great.

by Ourdaywillcome on Jul 9, 2010 12:09 AM EDT up reply actions

I think the Cavs are more likely to give JJ Hickson more playing time than they are to pursue Tyrus

You never know though. They may go into panic mode and give Tyrus a contract that would make the contract Amir Johnson received seem reasonable.

The Cats should still make the playoffs. Boston is probably the only Atlantic Division team that will make the playoffs. NJ has shown a lot of flash, but that team isn’t more talented than Charlotte. Throwing money at Travis Outlaw shouldn’t put any fear in the hearts of contenders.

As crazy as it may sound, the Cats are now playing in the most competitive division in the East.

Couldn't agree more.

For all the noise, Miami has likely purchased a number one seed in the Eastern Conference. For the Bobcats – and other teams on the road but far from the final destination of Championship City – all it means is that the goal is to finish above 8th place to avoid being the first round sacrifice on the Heat altar.

by Ourdaywillcome on Jul 9, 2010 1:15 AM EDT up reply actions

So then let our new goal be to not be an 8th seed

So we don’t get swept by Miami early this time

I still don't see this experiment working as well as everyone is assuming

When Boston got KG, Allen and Pierce they had three different players who complemented each other. Allen was your shooter, Pierce was your slasher and Garnett was your post presence. Couple that with the emergence of Rajon Rondo and Kendrick Perkins and that’s why the Celtics were successful.

What does Miami have now? The two best players who play exactly the same way and the Ru Paul of big men (thank you Shaq).

No doubt Miami are going to be very, very good… but these assumptions that they’ll automatically be the no.1 seed, or they’re a lock in the East just don’t ring true for me. If LeBron went to Chicago I think I’d be calling them a lock for not only the East, but the championship… as it stands I don’t know if these three and the rest of a D-league team will be able to put it together.

I don't think they necessarily have to compliment each other

I think the point was that most of last year each of these guys were often doubled, and defenses primary focus was stopping them. Fluster James and you have a shot at beating the Cavs.

But you can’t do this anymore. And both James and Wade can create their own shot and score on almost anybody in the league one on one. They have enough player power to excel even with very little game plan.

Have you heard that drama might already be brewing though?

There was a report that Bosh, Wade and James had originally agreed to do an announcement together to declare where they were going, but James’ camp intentionally leaked that Wade and Bosh were going to Miami 48 hrs early to ensure the entire spotlight would be on LeBron.

iight Ourday

youve convinced me then. maybe we arent completely screwed, but i do feel as though most of our future very indirectly lies in the hands of Tyrus Thomas and the big cigar chewing GMs of other teams.

i dont see Cleveland going after Tyrus, and the best thing that can happen if he does leave is a sign and trade that will give us a PG.
i also dont want to look too far into the summer league, but i cant help but smile when i see Derrick Brown and Gerald Henderson play.

i still think that Diaw will leave us by Thanksgiving. at least.
lets see what MJ and LB can do with that.

Chicago and Milwaukee were already playoff teams

So nothing changes there. You’re right about NY though. They could slip above or around us in the hunt. But that’s one additional team, and you are removing 2, Cleveland and Toronto. So I still say we hypothetically move up a spot.

Sure the rest of free agency could change things for better or worse. But as of now it’s good for us.
