With Bosh and Wade together, the Southeast could be the most hellish division in the NBA. If John Wall is a star, then every team in the division will look to make noise in the playoffs.

Is today's (Wed) game televised?

I wouldn't assume that Washington or Miami is going to be great in the playoffs

Everyone thought the Wizards were going to be good this year, and even before Arenas did his thing, they were crappy. I’m going to wait to the season begins to make judgment

Also, who else is freaking tired of LeBron

It’s one thing to drag it out because the public can understand it’s a hard decision. But to plan it and then have an hour long espn special to preface it? Just really insulting. This is why many people don’t like LeBron. When it comes down to his personality, most of the time it seems he’s just an attention whore.

When I was a kid...

(oh no, there he goes AGAIN!)

there was a person that could call the TV networks and demand an hour of prime time whenever the hell he felt like it. He was called Mr. President.

I simply cannot believe Lebron James can command that kind of authority. Not only that be his entourage of handlers are demanding the right to choose the commercials for the hour AND dictate that the money be donated to the Boys Club of America.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m all in favor of the charity act, but this is the sort of thing that Kennedy would do to update the country on the Cuban Missile Crisis and Nixon did when he resigned from office.

I’m a sports fan but this is putting WAYYYYY too much weight on a friggin’ game and one man who plays it.

Screw Lebron and every NBA wag that’s created and participated in this insanity. It’s the single biggest egotistical display of audacity I think I’ve ever seen. Wouldn’t it be great if “King James” deigned to play for a team, made the announcement, and then the team in question held a press conference and said, “on second thought, we’ve changed our minds. We don’t need this brand of crazy on our team.” It won’t happen of course. The team chosen (my money still says he’s in a Cavs uniform when it’s all over although the news out of Miami has me wondering) will act as if they’ve just been granted a personal sit-down chat with Jesus Himself.

My disgust with this entire process has hit a new peak. Talk amongst yourselves. I’m verklempt. What’s next? Is Lebron going to demand that his new team build a private gym and locker room annex? How much money do you think it will cost to expand all the doorways in whatever city he goes to in order to allow both James AND his massive fat head access?

Now that Wade and Bosh are dialed in we're starting to see some more pieces fall

From cumulative rumors here’s what I can see effecting the Bobcats:

- 5 teams are interested in Raymond Felton, some of which are sign and trade scenarios, but these are long shots.
- A’mare Stoudemire wants Luke Ridnour in New York
- Lebron is still a possiblilty for Miami, but if he doesn’t end up with the Heat Miami will look at bringing in Andre Miller to run the point.
- Chicago seem to be out of the running for Lebron and will be turning their attention to David Lee and Carlos Boozer (Possible Deng for Lee sign and trade?)

The stars are aligning to screw the Bobcats out of Felton and Tyrus Thomas. We just need to wait and see

Yup, very sad indeed... greedy megastars will end up ruining this league

look at what is going to happen to all those teams who waited years for this offseason… Nets, Cavs, etc. Going to end up overpaying fringe players like Tyrus or Felton that would be better off in lesser roles and screwing us who have an actual solid team core and not just a bunch of greedy jerks.

I love bosh/wade, but if LeSuck joins them, I will love to see them fail . I wanna see Bosh take on Gasol And Bynum, Dwade have to stop Kobe and LeSuck have to play a series against Artest… They will have NO help and may cruise through the regular season (like the Cavs) but come up short in the playoffs

This sort of thing makes me worried about not doing anything this off season but losing players

I have a feeling at best we will be about the same as last year, while everyone else is taking steps forward. Any news of any playoff teams in the east NOT getting better?

Teams that I think got worse:

- Orlando: Likely losing Matt Barnes and JJ Redick. No meaningful additions
- Boston: 6 months without Perkins, Rasheed Wallace retired

Even a slightly worse Orlando or Boston are still better than the Bobcats, but it needs to be mentioned.

Also, if Lebron ends up in Miami then Cleveland are dead in the water.

Okay, so I'll put my reassurance hat on

The teams who were just on the outside looking in are decimated.
- Toronto is in deep trouble.
- Chicago just cleared a lot of cap space and I think they’re going to regret losing Kirk Hinrich with or without Carlos Boozer.
- New York wont be doing anything with A’mare… they’ll be all sizzle and no steak

Now, the flipside is the Bobcats have a whole season with Stephen Jackson, and Tyrus Thomas (god willing). With both of those players the Bobcats’ record was 13-9 (0.590%), so if we expect them to look the same over the course of a whole season they’ll end 48-34 which is an improvement.

Noah is shaping up to be the next Karl Malone.

I’m not necessarily talking about his skills, but more along the lines of becoming a long-suffering player for a team that never manages to assemble the right combination to go all the way.
“All sizzle and no steak” is the best description of the Bulls and Knicks that I’ve heard to date.
Toronto is the new New Jersey.

The East just got real ugly. The Bobcats aren’t done yet and much depends on what happens with Tyrus Thomas, but I refuse to declare their coming season a washout before training camp even begins. The Bobcats have enough “fans” that have written them off before the first game of the season already.

I’m glad I found ROF because at least I know I’m not the only believer in the fortunes of the much-maligned and constantly underrated Charlotte Bobcats.

by Ourdaywillcome on Jul 7, 2010 11:30 AM EDT up reply actions

I boil it down to it's most simple of terms

How many games did the Bobcats lose because they:

a) Got out muscled in the paint
b) Didn’t have a reliable scorer(s) of the bench
c) Didn’t have enough depth at center

Now I look at what we’re seeing in Summer league:

a) Henderson and Brown are dominating offensively
b) Nathan Jawai is owning the paint
c) Ajinca finally looks to be catching on

So while it may seem like we’re spinning our wheels in reality we didn’t need a giant presto chango upgrade at every position. We just needed guys who have that ability innately to step up and do what they’re supposed to do. Jackson/Wallace are two of the best 1/2 scoring threats in the East, you just keep building around that, get stronger in the paint and get another PG and we’ll be able to put the screws to a lot of teams.

We had to make up for a rough 1st third in the rest of the season. Hopefully that won’t be the case this year.

It's worth mentioning

that the 13-9 record also included Felton as our starting PG. So why should we expect them to look the same over the course of the whole season?

Hint: 82games (and the paultry sum of minutes that D.J. played next to the starters) doesn’t have the answer.

Yeah, and we're 2-0 in the games Augustin started in 2009-10

Hint: Context matters

2 games out of 82 games. That’s a really tiny amount of data.

The numbers you use to tought D.J. are sometimes based on small amounts of data. You really can’t get a full picture from 2 or 4 games.

by and1droid on Jul 7, 2010 1:22 PM EDT up reply actions

The point I made was that we lose our starting PG next year.

We can expect to lose a little production along w/ that.

That’s hardly a condemnation of D.J. I’m just acknowledging that D.J. is probably a lesser all around player at this point in his career.

Let’s hope D.J. has learned to run an nba team and regains his scoring touch.

by and1droid on Jul 7, 2010 1:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Actually Yes

Cleveland isn’t getting better and hoping not to get much worse.
Boston is just getting older, and Perkins is laid up for a long time.
Orlando has a new backup PG but likely will lose bench depth elsewhere, like Matt Barnes.
Atlanta is paying more for the same team.

It’s the teams trying to catch up to those teams that are improving (Milwaukee and Miami) or at least trying to improve (Chicago, NJ and NY). Since Larry Brown signed on to coach the Bobcats, they’ve focused on short term improvement, and that strategy got them to the playoffs. Now they are paying the piper, and it shouldn’t be a surprise that they don’t have a lot of money left to spend. Still, the off-season is just getting started, and the Bobcats do have opportunities to put together a team that can compete for a spot in the playoffs next season.

by ClipCat on Jul 7, 2010 11:18 AM EDT up reply actions

But those 4 teams will still be better than us

Provided LeBron stays in Cleveland, which I believe he will.

I know LB’s (almost typed Larry David :) historically has almost always made the playoffs in his 2nd year. Any idea what his third year averages look like? Or his season immediately following his team’s 1st playoff birth?

on behalf of tha dirty south: soul food, carolina blue, southern hospitality, and tha queen city

by southtunnel on Jul 7, 2010 12:08 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree with you

But without a major talent infusion that just wasn’t realistic this season, I never expected the Bobcats to significantly improve on last season’s team. Holding their ground and returning to the playoffs would be a successful season to me.

Brown coached nine NBA and ABA teams before coming to Charlotte. He stayed to coach a third season with only four of those teams, Denver, San Antonio, Indianapolis and Philadephia. The good news is that all four of those teams made the playoffs in Brown’s third season. He had quite a bit more star power on each of those teams with David Thompson, David Robinson, Reggie Miller and Allen Iverson, but he’s shown he can coach teams led by star players as well as teams without superstars like the Pistons and Bobcats.

But if Charlotte doesn’t make the playoffs, Brown’s history points to a quick exit. He’s coached four teams that failed to make the playoffs after appearing in the playoffs the previous season. Each time this occurred Brown either was fired or quit (not sure how many of those times were his choice vs. him being fired).

We’ll have to see how free agency plays out, but right now I’m guardedly optimistic that the Bobcats will be competing for a playoff spot next season. They need to hold onto Thomas and find a veteran PG that isn’t terrible. I believe they can do that.

by ClipCat on Jul 7, 2010 12:36 PM EDT up reply actions

LB is gone next year no matter what

He almost left this year… with his contract up I don’t see any way he’s back. I just hope they start getting a good idea for a replacement soon and not wait until the last minute.

by drapht00 on Jul 7, 2010 1:07 PM EDT up reply actions

He just as easily could have left this year

If the team performs really well then why wouldn’t he come back? This is most likely the ending to his legacy. Why hang it up prematurely, if you are getting close?

I still maintain that the teams LOSING these players are going to be worse for it.

I also still maintain that a team like the Heat that ends up with more than one of these monster egos is going to have a nice little honeymoon period and then implode because of infighting and unreasonable demands. It’s no different than the music industry where certain members of a band start believing their own press and it causes the group to fall to pieces because each member is clammoring for the spotlight.

Not sure about the Jordan comparison though
“They’re all worried about his athleticism — his one bounce-and-dunk,” said Hanners. "If you play off of him because of that and he takes one bounce and makes (a jumper) and you look over at the bench and say, ‘What do you want me to do?’

“Michael Jordan was like that. If you got on him, he dunked on you. If you stayed off him, he made jump shots.”

I sure don’t remember him hitting jump shots last year. But we know he has the athleticism, so if he can shoot consistently then he could be a big factor this season. I’m encouraged.

on behalf of tha dirty south: soul food, carolina blue, southern hospitality, and tha queen city

by southtunnel on Jul 7, 2010 11:09 AM EDT up reply actions

The lack of a jump shot is the reason players like Harden and DeRozan got selected before Henderson.

I don’t think Gerald Henderson deserves a Jordan comparison, but he looks like a jack of all trades this summer league. Makes me wonder if Stephen Jackson could run the point (he did in Atlanta for a while so there is a precident) with Henderson at the 2.

What guarantee is there that NY would be better than Cleveland?

Completely dis your hometown to go somewhere where your team will potentially be worse? I could see Miami, especially now that Bosh already committed.

But I still think he stays put. Reject your hometown and family, in a city that is starving for a successful sports team, just to get a Championship the easy way? I just can’t see it.

According to ESPN Lebron was on a conference call with A'mare Stoudemire and Carmelo Anthony this morning

According to sources Anthony was pushing hard to try and get Lebron to go to New York. Presumably this would result in Anthony telling the Nuggets he doesn’t intend to resign and suggesting they trade him to New York (possibly for David Lee).

If you’re the Nuggets it’s better you get something than nothing, and if New York finished this insanity with Lebron, Carmelo and Stoudemire they could fill the rest of the roster with D-leaguers and still cruise through the playoffs.

But NY couldn't do that

To sign LeBron, NY would have to renounce their rights to Lee to officially clear up the cap space needed for a second max contract. I heard the report you mentioned, too, and it is interesting. However, as in Miami’s situation, a team has to pretty much get rid of all its players in order to free up enough cap space for three max players. I just can’t see Denver trading Carmelo for Curry, W. Chandler and Gallinari.

Carmelo holds the keys

He only has one more year. So he can say ‘Trade me to the Knicks, or I leave in 2011 and you get nothing’. No team is going to offer anything of worth to Denver for a 1 year rental of Anthony.

Could depend on how bad Denver wants to cut salary

I expect Carmelo to re-sign with the Nuggets, but if not maybe the Knicks trade only Gallo and Chandler to Denver. The Nuggets get a big trade exception and avoid the luxury tax. Their fans would hate it though.

Anyone else seen SVG's take on the free agency?

Pretty spot on.
On LeBron’s ESPN special:

Come on, an hour long? It takes 15 seconds to say “I’ve decided to stay in Cleveland” but we’ve got another 59 minutes and 45 seconds to, what? Promote LeBron James? As if we don’t do that enough. Look, the guy’s a great player and wherever he goes, my bet would be Cleveland, that place will be excited. But an hour long special?

On Bosh joining Wade in Miami:

Well, he’s been following him around for two weeks like his lapdog. So that doesn’t really surprise me.
